WRT310N v1 DHCP client fails to renew lease

I have a Linksys WRT310N v1 with firmware v1.0.10 build 002Jul 19, 2010
My router fails to renew it's DHCP lease from my cable provider, causing internet access to drop.
I can still access my cable modem at 192.168.100.1, but I must do a "IP Address Release" then "IP Address Renew" to get back internet access. Is this a known issue? The router works fine otherwise.

You can also reflash the firmware. Using the same firmware version, perform a firmware upgrade.

    capture report https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=AFE3D0245A92F6F8%21183

The issue is that your machine is not being assigned an IP address / was unable to reach the DHCP server to receive one. The 169.254.x.x IP your machine is showing isn't assigned from DHCP, it's assigned by the local machine and is referred to as an APIPA
    address.
So something is preventing your machine from reaching your DHCP server, which could one of a number of things. In the first instance I'd suggest having a look at
http://epan36.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/eventid-1001-dhcp-your-computer-was-not.html which lists several of things that could cause this error and things you can try in order to resolve it.
If none of those work, can you confirm whether you have any other machines connecting via the same method on the network, which might indicate whether this is an issue at the machine end or somewhere between the machine and DHCP server?

  • WRT54G dhcp clients table missing linux boxes - only windows listed

I've searched the forum and similar messages and other routers mention that a firmware update will fix the problem where not all dhcp connections show up in the status/local networks/dhcp clients table.
    I have WRT54G hardware version 6, firmware v 1.00.06.
I've looked at the firmware updates and no mention of this problem appears. I don't want to needlessly update my firmware.
Does anyone know if this problem has been fixed in the latest firmware?

    More info:
It seems that the linux box (ubuntu 7.04) is using the bootp protocol, not full dhcp. From some reading of the rfc's it seems that dhcp is an enhancement to bootp, and it is valid for clients to request an ip address from a dhcp server (the protocols use the same ports etc.).
However, bootp does not deal with a lease and since the dhcp client tables list a lease time, I am guessing that this different way of getting an ip address is what is messing with the router.
On the one hand, it could be said that since it's not a full dhcp client, the router would be technically correct to not show it in the client list.
But, it does make for a bit of a messy situation as some clients can appear invisible to the network configuration manager. This could be a security issue.

  • Renew lease DHCP

I have an issue where usually when my laptop is asleep/off line for say about 8 hours and then reconnects to the network, I sometimes need to manually renew the IP lease otherwise even though it's connected to the wifi network, it has network problems.
Is this a network issue with OS 10.5.6? I never had this problem with 10.5.5.
    Thanks!

depends in part on the DHCP server.
Whomever administers the DHCP server can change the lease time.
Default is on the order of 3 days, but can be shortened or lengthened depending on the situation.
This is generally done when there are a number of users who are consuming an IP, but are not really logged on (not logged on includes disconnects, intentional or otherwise - which would be you if the system is asleep or off) and there are active users that cannot connect due to a shortage of available IPs.

  • Sep 02 20:31:01    Severity:4    DHCP Client lease rejected from IPv4 router addr , MAC addr

    Problem:
Time Capsule kept loosing connectivity from internet modem. ISP has no records of outages.
    Logs:
    Sep 02 20:31:01    Severity:4    DHCP Client lease rejected from IPv4 <router addr>, MAC <addr>
    Resolution:
Make sure you TC is not connected to the same coax cable that the cable box is connected to.
Although, the system may work just fine for quite some time, eventually service will be disrupted by some device attempting to connect over and over.
For some reason, Time Capsule doesn't perform well when a device attempts to authenticate over and over, even if they device clearly isn't part of the Access Control List or even have the correct password.
So, in this case the the offending mac address was Scientific Atlanta Device, which was my cable box.
    Regards!

I have seen the same issue with my iOS and Mac OS devices (iPhone and MacBook Pro). I have written my own DHCP server (http://notebook.kulchenko.com/embedded/dhcp-and-dns-servers-with-arduino) and have had troubles getting my devices to connect (Windows Vista and Ubuntu devices connect fine). I suspect that this problem happens because the DHCP Offer message is sent to a broadcast address, even though (at least in my case) the broadcast flag is off in the DHCP Discover message I see.
Unfortunately you didn't include the Discover message, so I can't tell for sure, but if it indeed has the broadcast flag set to 0, then the server should send the response message using unicast as per DHCP spec (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2131.txt, section 4.1):
If the broadcast bit is not set and 'giaddr' is zero and
'ciaddr' is zero, then the server unicasts DHCPOFFER and DHCPACK
messages to the client's hardware address and 'yiaddr' address.
So, it seems like in this case the server may be at fault, even though it would be nice for Mac OS to accept broadcast responses (and would solve my problem too).
Can someone confirm that Mac OS does not accept broadcast responses to DHCP Discover and DHCP Request messages? Thanks.
    Paul.

  • How can I force a DHCP client to renew its IP address??

    Hi to all,
I have installed in a customer, a Cisco 2801 who has configured a DHCP pool. This router takes a reload every month (by maintenance purposes), when it is up (in the network we have AVAYA phones working fine, it's a call center), this phones takes a reload to renew the ip, which is assigned by the DHCP pool.
The problem is when some phones try to renew its IP address (after the router reload), the phone detects a IP conflict an it forces a reload. This reload normally is in production hours, the agents lose their phones and they can't work......
There is some option to force the DHCP client to do a IP renewal from the DHCP server???
    Thanks to all.
    Regards.
    David.

First of all you should investigate what is going so horribly wrong in your network that you have to reload your router every month (and even worse in production hour). If it's an instability, have you tried to update to a newer IOS-version?
Regarding your DHCP-problem. For that you just have to configure your DHCP-server correctly by specifying a database-agent:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios-xml/ios/ipaddr_dhcp/configuration/12-4t/dhcp-12-4t-book/config-dhcp-server.html#GUID-5F022CF5-671E-49E7-8FBD-69997EEBC730
With this function the router stores all bindings and knows (also after a reload) which addresses are already assigned to which system.

  • DHCP client lease on 2801

I'm trying to configure the DHCP client lease time on a 2801 router and can't seem to find the correct command. I've tried searching the Cisco site and found a command that looked like it would do the job (ip dhcp client lease x x x), but when I tried inputting that into the router it didn't recognize the command.
In looking through the router's commands I've found ip dhcp-client limit lease per x which seems to be an interface command and doesn't sound like what I'm trying to do.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Are you trying to configure the lease time assigned to a client from a DHCP pool?

  • WRT54G - won't display DHCP clients, won't let me change port forward

Just wondering if I need a new router....
It seems to never be able to display the DHCP clients table any more & when I try to forward a port to a connection, the table says it's forwarded, but it never actually changes it.
I upgraded the firmware to 8.00.7 (the latest for v8 hardware), did a hard reset and powered off to reset.
Still no luck....maybe it's just time for a new one?
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks,
    Eric

I just recently got the same issue in regards to the DHCP on my WRT610n. On windows XP a simple right click of the connection, and clicking repair forced windows to flush the DNS and renew them. After than the machine showed up in the DHCP list on the router again (I guess for some reason the leases suddenly stopped being renewed). Unfortunately this appears to of been removed in Windows Vista and been replaced by some kind of automated diagnose and repair system (If no problem is found it does nothing. Unhelpful).
However if you go to start > run > type "cmd" and enter to bring up the prompt, then type ipconfig /flushdns and then after it's complete type ipconfig /registerdns, that should force it to renew it's DNS from the router and it may show up in the DHCP table once more on the router. There's also a ipconfig /renew command that renews all adapters. If you wish to find out more about the ipconfig commands and what each of them does before doing anything, feel free to type ipconfig /?
Unfortunately I haven't found a way to get my router to keep renewing the leases as usual, so I guess this is just a temporary solution to part of your problem. As for the router going to the wrong IP, I was going to suggest DHCP reservation but I've just found out you don't have that, so instead I've found this quick thread that may / may not be helpful to you as it points out a few interesting rules that Linksys operates by: Click Here
As for the Port not forwarding, I'm not really sure, I'm just another user with issues of my own. I hope that one of the mods/staff/more knowledgable techi/person on this forum addresses your issues better than I have soon. Though isn't port 80 the default http port, and thus automatically open anyway? Can you even assign that port to anything? I thought it'd be reserved and thus not usable. Have you tried assigning a different port and forwarding that instead? But then again I'm not the most knowledgable of people =P

  • Propagating changes to DNS servers to DHCP clients

I have a routed network with 8 subnets all served by a 3550 running a DHCP server.  I have 8 dhcp pools set up, one for each subnet.  Currently there are about 100 dhcp clients with leases across those subnets.   I had to change the DNS server list for each of the dhcp pools.  How do I ensure that the new DNS server info gets to all clients?   Will the clients get updated DNS info by virtue of the changes I made to the dhcp pools, or do Ineed to wait until the leases are renewed for the changes to propagate?  If so, short of having each client release/renew, is there a way to force the change?  I know that I can start/stop the dhcp server which I believe will clear all bindings which then in turn will force all clients to get a new lease.  Is there any other way to propagate the DNS change?

It should change automatically when you modify the parameters. No need to stop/start dhcp for that.
As as an alternative, it will certainly be updated when the clients are rebooted.
Best is to change it after office hours, systems will be updated when the users start their PC's in the morning.

  • Refreshing the DHCP client table

I just got an EA3500 and I guess I don't understand what "Refresh" does when viewing the DHCP client table under the "Status", "Local Network" tab of the web interface, either that or it's not working.  If I have active wired and wireless clients and I power off the EA3500, wait a few minutes, then power it back on, the table is blank.  If I hit "Refresh" I would expect it to re-populate the table with the connected clients.  For whatever reason, it doesn't.  I have to physically disconnect and reconnect the E-net cable, or power cycle the wireless client to get them to reappear in the table.  Is something wrong with the router or its s/w, or is that not what "Refresh" is supposed to do?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts you might have.

The thread below would seem to indicate that this problem has been around awhile with different routers.  The lease times will refresh, but devices won't appear if they're not already in the table.
    http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/Devices-missing-in-DHCP-Client-Table/td-p/7984
When your computer needs an address, it will send a demand to the router using DHCP. The router's DHCP server then LEASES an IP address for a short amount of time. The computer has to RENEW the lease once in a while to make sure the router knows that the address is still in use. Routers like these save the DHCP information in temporary memory only. When you reboot the router, it no longer remembers who has what address until someone renews again.

  • Missing Wireless Devices On DHCP Client Table

I’ll always have three wired devices connected on my router at all times and other wireless devices but I disconnect them when I'm done using them. I’ve recently left two wireless devices connect all the time but what seems after a week or so all my wireless devices stop showing up on my DHCP Client Table. Even though they stop showing up on the DHCP Client Table they still work fine and are still connected to the internet. I already tried rebooting my router and that seems to fix it. I have an E2000 Router with the latest Firmware: 1.0.04 I haven’t had any problems with disconnects or anything. My question is why is this happening and how do I fix it or does the router not support devices been connected for days? Thanks in advance.

There is no fix for this problem as it's not a problem. Maybe your wireless devices don't renew the lease at some point but just keep using the current IP address. Maybe it's a bug in firmware. But as you have noticed it does not cause connection problems. I think very often there are glitches in the DHCP table of various routers.

  • Tried to renew lease for lost reference

    Hi
Oracle sessions get stuck on parsing all sessions accessing the same object wait
    on "library cache pin".
We found one session coming from jdbc client waiting on "SQLNET message from client"
and holding all the rest sessions.
When we kill this session the problem resolves.
Following the port holding session with netstat, lsof and so on back to the jdbc
client side on different machine we only see error message connected to the same
port saying "tried to renew lease for lost reference". Our assumption is that
oracle lost connection with the client while locking a DB object when was doing
parsing and thus locked all sessions that wanted to access same object.
Did anybody encounter the same problem? How was resolved?
    Thanks.

What is the cause of this message? What needs to be done to clean

This message is printed when one WebLogic kernel tries to renew a lease for
an remote object from another WebLogic which has already been collected. It
makes sense that this might happen in the failure scenario you describe.
When the network is disconnected DGC lease renewals can't be sent and the
kernel exporting the object may therefore believe that the object is no
longer in use and collect it. When the network is re-established the remote
    objects may be gone.
However the fact that you are seeing this message printed repeatedly is
troubling. You may want to contact [email protected] with the
description you provided here along with the following additional
    information.
Are you seeing this message on the client or server? If on the server is it
on the server that was disconnected or on one of the other servers? What
version (including service packs) of WebLogic are you running?

    Hi,
The authorized DHCP server contacts a domain controller every 60 min to detect/redetect his status. Maybe your DHCP has tried to reach the DC which was offline thus throwing that error. Are you still having issues with DHCP server servicing clients?
Once the server talks to a DC and checks that his authorized the service will start leasing IPs to clients.

  • Cisco ASA 5505 and DHCP Client Problems

Hi, i have a problem. I've connected my ASA appliance to an ADSL modem, and i dont get an DHCP address on the outside interface (e0/0). I use the asa-722-19.bin firmware.
I turned on the debugging for the DHCP client and could see that the ASA device was sending out broadcasts but a reply never came. Instead I connected the device to my internal network where the ASA got an address instantly.
I read somewhere that if I was to use ?ip address dhcp client-id fastethernet 0″, then I got an address from the ISP.
I tried looking for a similar command on the ASA5505 but I couldn?t find anything. I did however find a page on the Cisco site confirming my suspicions. It said some ISP?s require the client-id field of the DHCPDISCOVER request to be filled.
I've also read that this issue has beed fixed since a few weeks, now they have released version 7.2(2).22 where you can define ?dhcp-client client-id interface outside? in global configuration mode. Im running 7.2(2).19 and i cannot find any command like that in my appaiance. How do i fix my problem ? Or how do i get about recieving the 7.2(2).22 firmware update.
    Regards !
    Leif

Hi again! I thought I should share the solution that worked for me. I use software version 7.2(2) on this device. ASDM 5.2(2). In ASDM open configuration / Interfaces. Click in outside (my case 0/0) and press Edit. Then open the tab Advanced and set the correct Active Mac address. Fore some reason its empty by default and the ISP/modem don't like that. You will find the correct MAC address under the help menu / "About ASA". Im sure there is some another way to do this but this is a simple "how-to" that works with Swedens biggest ISP and their standard DSL modem.
When I used a Linksys DSL modem in bridge mode without the MAC address set I got an inside IP adress (192.168.x.x) from the modem to the ASA. After setting the MAC address I just had to do a renew and got the outside address right away. /Bjorn
(future users searchwords: no ip from isp, ASA 5505 and cable modem).

Bought 3 identical machines for our childcare center. Set them up the same. All work fine except ONE of them becomes inaccessible periodically (daily more-or-less) to the other Windows computers on our little peer-to-peer LAN. You can see it, but cannot access any shared folder. There is NO problem accessing the OTHER computers on the LAN from this one. All 3 machines have the same sharing profile, workgroup, permissions, AV, firewall settings, everything. I realized restarting the computer in question solved the problem immediately but temporarily. I narrowed it down to restarting the DHCP Client service. Do that, everything works fine immediately but temporarily.
    Things I tried:
Calling HP support - not helpful at all. It is under warranty.
    Disabled IPv6
    Disabled wireless
Disabled power-saving shutoff of network adapter
    Setting DHCP CLIENT recovery to:
First Failure = Restart the the Service
Second Failure = Restart the the Service
Subsequent Failures = Restart the the Service
Reset Fail count After = 120
     Restart Service after = 0
But again, this isn't happening to the other machines with default settings. Nothing works except restarting the DHCP Client service. The loss of access happens with or without someone logged or using it. It has happened since it was first set up.
I don't know if the HP warranty covers factory-loaded OS. I don't want to restore the thing and start over. I am not an IT professional, just the guy in the office who does these things, but it seems like the network adapter could be defective. I don't know if I can convince a first-level phone support person to have me bring the machine to an authorized service place.
    Any help greatly appreciated,

I would tend to agree, but I wanted to offer you that driver as a last resort.
This is a consumer to consumer forum.  I don't work for HP, and if you suspect it is a hardware issue, you will need to contact HP technical support and submit a support case under the warranty.
The warranty covers hardware, and support for the HP software and operating system installed (as long as it is the original factory image that came with the PC and not an operating system you installed).
