WRT54G v5 freezes every ~48 hours, advice?

Greetings!
I purchased this router around summer of 2006, and it worked flawlessly without a reboot up until around the end of December. I didn't have physical access to it until early January, when I disconnected its power to rewire, and then reconnected it. The thing is, ever since then, the router seems to freeze up every 24-48 hours and requires another reboot. When I say "freeze up" I mean that connected computers can't use the internet or even the router's control panel; the router's lights still blink (although not as quickly as they do when there's activity), though.
Admittedly, my roommate has overloaded the apartment's circuit a few times, and so the router has also been through two or three "blackouts" but I wouldn't imagine that to cause a huge issue, right?
The firmware version that the router was originally at when the freezes occured was 1.01.0 (router shipped with 1.00.9). I upgraded to 1.01.1, but the problem remains. I hard-reset the router and redid my settings manually, but the issue remains. I'm going to try reverting back to 1.00.9, but I'm wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar.
One Windows XP system is hard-wired to the router, and maybe one or two other Win XP PCs connect through the wireless. I've tried disabling the wireless to see if it was the culprit, and the freezing issue still occurred. It seems like it has to be a software problem, but I'm starting to wonder if maybe there's a hardware issue here.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'd greatly appreciate it.

The router is indeed connected to a surge protector, but it's the same surge protector and the same plug that it worked flawlessly with for the first few months. However, I will give it a try.
I've reverted to 1.00.9 firmware and the router survived 48 hours without locking up. However, web browsing was very slow and emails wouldn't send near the end of that time frame, so I had to do a soft restart on the router (fixed the problem). If it happens again, I will manually redo all of the configurations on this firmware version and see if it fixes it completely. That the router lasted so long without completely shutting down net access seems promising to me, but perhaps it was just random. I'll post back with the results of the firmware test as well as the changing where it is plugged in to, if the firmware fix doesn't seem to work.

  • Macbook Pro freezing every one hour

    Hello guys,
I did post this a couple of days ago, but since I got not a single answer, I'm kindly posting again too see if I get more luck this time, so, I hope any of you can help me with my problem, and thanks in advance:
I have a macbook pro, OS X 10.7.5, 2,3 GHz, two years old. Around a week ago, it started to systematically hang up. It happens as follows: It goes irresponsive, independentely from which applications I'm using at the moment. It does it gradually, so at the beginning I can still move the pointer, but as soon as I try to go to force quite, the spinning wheels appears, and soon it's all frozen, so I don't have any other option than restarting with the physical button.
Funnily, this happens every one hour. I went through other posts in the support community, and firstly, I was directed to check Terminal, finding out, right before the reboots, several messages which said that a thinning of the SSD unit was necessary, since there was less than 20% of the space free. I have cleaned up the unit, having now 34,7 GB out of 127,18 GB free (27%). I thought I had solve the problem, but no, it keeps on freezing the same. The messages do not appear anymore tho.
I checked the unit with Disk Utility, and a repair was recommended. I did a repair, by restarting and holding Ctrl+D, after which Disk Utility says the unit is alright. But it still freezes.
I reinstalled OS X 10.7.5, but that didn't help either.
The Console now shows these messages before the freezing happens:

  • EA6900 Freezes every few hours.

Hi there, I know it may seem a common problem but after so many years and many routers I never had such an annoing problem.
Im in canada with telus, my 6900 freezes at least once a day with no access to LAN or WAN, I have to unplug the power and then works again for a few hours (sometimes a day).
I tried to revert back to the original firmware with the same result.
It seems that when the IP changes the router freezes (but again It may be just a coincidence since after a forced rebood the IP on telus changes).
    I use custom (Unotelly DNS)
My previous E3000 was very stable, so was my WRT54G (all with DD-WRT).
I only have IP4 active (IP6 disabled), UPNP disabled, Media priorization disable and so many other but problem is still there.
Im in canada with telus 50 with an ALU modem.
This seems a software bug to me.
    Any help is really appreciated.
Ps I bought the router from linksys USA and then moved to canada

thank you Dave, I have just went back to the previous firmware and spa personal is default on both 2.4 and 5.
I have also put 20 as per your suggestion.
I really like the performance and coverage of this router compared to my old
One thing I noticed is that with the new firmware I was loosing the wifi connection on the 5Ghz band while wired equipment was still working but it was still randomly freezing with no wired or Wifi access.
I will also open a ticket
Again thank you for the reply, I will post the results
Hey garbia. What is the current firmware version of your EA6900 router? Were you able to reset the router after updating it to the latest firmware? Resetting the router after firmware update can help to properly sync the firmware with the router (this works for me). You may also need to isolate if the connection freezes only when your EA6900 router is connected and check if the connection directly to the modem (without the EA6900) is stable.

  • Finder regularly freezes every few hours

Before I begin, this is a video of what happens:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7k97XgwawY
The finder freezes up, most applications still kind of work. When I hover the mouse over the default menubar items {airport, time, spotlight}, the beach ball appears. Some of the other menubar items work. I ultimately have to force shut down, and reboot. I'm safe for about two hours, until it inevitably happens again.
I explained this all to the genius bar at Apple, and they said they would keep my computer for diagnostics. They said everything was perfect, and the hardware was running fine. They insisted it was a *software issue*, and that I reinstall Snow Leopard. I do a clean install, and back up from my time machine - the problem still persists.
I then attempted to isolate the problem, by killing one process/application at a time to see if it makes a difference. I've officially *tested every process* in Activity Monitor, and neither one seemed to make a difference. (Some processes I couldn't kill, and some would freeze the computer when I did).
So what do I do next? What could this possibly be? Anyone having a similar issue?
    WHO ELSE IS FRUSTRATED??!!

Ah! The missing information. Then, you need to resolve the conflict or corruption within the original account, normally between preference files.
Since the issue is specific to your original user account, you can proceed in two ways. One is to log into your new account, make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything not on that list into a newly created folder on the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can copy the ones in the Desktop folder (a couple at a time) back into /Preferences/, restart, and see if the problem returns. If so, you've identified the corrupt/conflicting one. Continue with all of them until isolating the bad ones. That'll save you the trouble of resetting preferences.
The second way is much more detailed and I'll not burden you with the steps unless the above doesn't fix the issue.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins,* log out of your account, and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

I read in one of the website that some people fixed this issue updating ssd firmware. But I'm not sure where to get firmware for my ssd.

There are two options, keep the Time Machine HDD connected full time or turn Time Machine off and on only when you want to make the backup.

  • Computer freezes every hour

I built my brothers computer about 2 years ago and there were no issues. Awhile ago he uninstalled itunes from the C drive and installed it on the F drive. Well when he did this is when the computer started freezing every hour. Whether that was the exact
cause or not, I'm not sure. I tried reinstalling it back on the C drive but it still freezes. I retrieved the admin logs for when the error occurred. There were 5 events. I have them zipped up but I don't know where I can upload them on here. Any help would
be most appreciated, I've spent hours looking for a solution.

Hi, sorry for the delay. It's been a busy couple of days. I was toying with my brother's computer yesterday and this is what I came across. The computer has a Crucial M4 64GB SSD (C: drive) which is used for the OS basically. He also has an external HD (we
will call it F drive). Whenever I unplug the external and manually restart the computer, it restarts as normal. However, when it freezes and I restart the computer by actually shutting down the comp, it doesn't recognize the C drive. It boots to the bios but
I don't have the ability to change the boot order because it doesn't recognize the C drive (the F drive is unplugged). Once I plug the F drive back in and restart the computer, it will boot up as normal. The F drive is purely for programs, everything OS related
    is on the C drive.
I also tried to install something from windows update but it got stuck, blue screened (I wasn't able to see what it said) and eventually froze on checking for updates. I'm suspecting it may be a hard drive failure but I'm not 100% certain.
I've never used skydrive so I hope I did it correctly. I just uploaded the zip file. Thank you for all your help.

Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:

Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
    Expand Custom Views
    Click Administrative Events
    Right click Administrative Events

Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to skydrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post
If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem.  The
work around is to edit the registry.  If you are not comfortable doing this DONT.  If you are, backup the key before you do

I've had my laptop for about a year and a half now and recently its just started freezing every hour and the spinning wheel appears but i can still move the cursor, this lasts for a couple of minutes and then everything starts working fine again. I havnt dropped it or done anything different from how i usually treat it and havnt downloaded any new software recently. Anyone know what might be the problem or how I could fix it? Its pretty annoying when im trying to work.

    Open your Activity Monitor.app.
Leave it open so that you can see the contents of the window.
Now click the banner for the CPU% so that it is sorted showing the highest usage at the top of the list.
Next step, play the waiting game =) you need to make sure that you can see the list in the Activity Monitor when the time comes around that everything is freezing.
Look at the list, when it freezes up and see what is at the top of the list for CPU usage. Also note what the CPU usage is listed at. (write down the top 5 items and the cpu usage)

  • About every 24 hours I have to cycle the power on my iPad because it freezes up. Any ideas?

My ipad locks up.This happens just about every 24 hours. When it does I power down and up and I am able to run.

If that happened to me, I would restore my iPad.  Plug it in to iTunes, let it sync, then click the "Restore" button on the right side.
You won't lose anything.  That should help.

  • Mac keeps freezing every 15minutes even when re-installing of OS

I tend to have this issue after I've updated my latest OS to 10.4.11... My mac has the tendency to freeze every 15-20minutes... After checking my hardware realising that it's still in good working condition, I downloaded main menu to do a clean up... It has more or less fix the problem but it comes back after I updated my Safari browser...
Unknowingly what's the underlying cause, I decided to re-install the OS... The more frustrating thing is that it hangs even when I re-installed the OS, approximately about 15 minutes before the entire set-up is done... I've no choice but to restart my mac.. But not it seems I can't really boot it as it even hangs during start up...
Really at wit's ends... Can anyone help??
    Thanks

    Hi S.U,
No problem at all.. But really thanks for your advice which I think it might be the case...
My mac is the very first G4 batch and it's about coming to 5 years old... My harddisk crashed 2 years back and had sent it for a replacement from a 30GB to a current 120GB HD... I do face initial software problems after the fix and I got it back again and the technician install my mac with his Tiger installation disc instead on what's my initial package comes with... It worked fine subsequently for the next 2 years till recently, especially I've not been using my mac for months, the hanging issue came... Frustrating as it is, I had thought it's due to the upgrading of the OS and security measures that's too taxing for my current hardware... But now since you mentioned about the additional hardware problem that any hardware software can't detect, I'd think it stands a pretty high chance since I had once had my harddisk replaced and my mac being too old and wear and tear could be a problem...
I had managed to do an Erase and Install the OS last night despite after several hanging sessions during the reinstallation program... I've updated my OS to the latest 10.4.11 with security added... Right now my mac appears to look fine after operating for several hours of software updating, reinstalling of all my other applications as well as moving my back-up files back to the system... I hope after all these, the hanging issue won't persists though I have this feel that it might not be fully resolve and my sister is saying that I should get a new mac with extra huge space RAM and processor to suit an extra huge consumer like me...
Well, for now I just have to KIV and I hope this current mac of mine can stay on till I get a new mac...
But anyway, thanks for your advice, will look into it seriously if the hanging issues come back again...

After a normal SAP start, all Windows processes bit by bit allocate their memory.
oracle.exe starts with a Mem Usage 236 MB (VM Size 1.900 MB).
You can see this in Windows Task Manager.
After about 30 minutes oracle.exe reaches its average value of about 2 GB.
The value ranges from 1,9 GB up to 2,5 GB.
Then, about every 6 hours the following happens:
oracle.exe deallocates its memory completely !
No answer in SAPGUI, no reaction on the console for about 5 Minutes.
Then when i get the first look at the Task manager, i see that oracle.exe allocated about 80 MB.
In the next 20 minutes Mem Usage raises up to the average value of about 2 GB.
During this time, the performance comes up again step by step.
Not only Oracle is affected, at least every disp+work process also frees all allocated mamory.
But it seems as if Oracle would be the first to free up its memory and then drags down the SAP Kernel processes.
We have no changes made to the SAP Kernel, we did not apply any Windows updates.
SAP operated error-free for the last 2 years in this configuration.
The only thing we did, was to apply several SAP Support Packages (Basis + Application).
This behaviour occured the next day after we imported those packages.
So we have to suspect these packages, although the symptoms point to a problem with the SAP kernel, Oracle or the Windows memory mamagement.
SAP Support adviced us to reduce the load on the server, so we suspended some work processes.
    Result: no improvement.
Next we reduced the Oracle cache size by 250 MB.
Result: the situation became even worse, the error occured every hour.
So we icreased the cache size up to 1,36 GB.
Result: could be an improvement, not sure yet.
I am wondering what must happen, that all processes on a Windows Server deallocate their memory.
    Can a ABAP-Report provoke this error ?
Has anybody else ever seen such a behaviour ?
    Any ideas ?

Thx for your interest in this issue.
    For clarification:
    - Database version is 9.2.0.7.0
    - We will upgrade to 64 Bit in the next months, but we still need a solution for our 32 Bit system.
    - We did not add new application servers. These servers were up and running before and after the problem occured.
    - I don't think that Oracle restarts. There are no ORA-entries in the Oracle Log and there is no Oracle-Usertrace.
The system slows down, because every byte, that is backed up in the paging file (as far as i know in MS terms this is called "standby list"), has become invalid and must be read from disk.
Not only Oracle is affected, every process trimmed its working set.
For example Terminal Services is unresponsive for about 4 minutes.
In the end all processes continue their work, but it takes some time until their working set has been restored from the paging file.
No errors occur, no Dumps, no EventLog or SystemLog entries.
There are just some TIMEOUTs, caused by the unresponsiveness of the server in the first minutes of the memory crash.
    @Markus:
Yes, i also think that we reached some kind of Oracle memory limit.
Since we increased the Oracle cache size, the frequency of the error has been significantly reduced.
But still i am wondering what funny things can happen.
I would expect Oracle to crash, Windows to bluescreen, SAP to dump.
But freeing the memory of all processes is something completely new to me.

Hi, My name is Bheki Yende
I'm experiencing a problem with an app I've just purchased from iTunes, I have tried every piece of advice from the "iOS: Troubleshooting applications purchased from the App Store" and still nothing is working. I would like to get my refund on this pls.
This is an inconvenience, I don't understand why I have to contact the developer for a faulty product in your store.
I've paid iTunes to get this, so iTunes must fix this problem for me or give my money back.
    Thanks

This is a user forum, you are not speaking to Apple here.
You will need to contact iTunes support here, regarding this issue. They will usually respond within 24 hours.

my apple ipod classic 80gb says there is no music - anything on my ipod, but says it only has 37gb free. Then i try and plug it into my pc with iTunes on (i've set it to do not automatically sync devices) but it still freezes every time. the only way to unfreeze it is by detatching the ipod or resetting with menu/centre (until it loads up again, where it immediately unfreezes and comes up with a load of messages saying "cannot read iPod" and when i try and restore it by pressing menu/centre button while it's plugged in, it says "cannot restore as it is being used by another program" or "error 1415". Any ideas how to sort this out? hope i haven't majorly screwed it up. thanks.

Sorted it out. If anyone has this problem i reccommend visiting http://forums.ilounge.com/ipod-classic-ipod-5g-video/237546-ipod-classic-80gb-fr eezes-itunes-need-restore-plz-help-2.html#post1403546 there's some pretty good advice on it. have to go into control panel and re-format iPod into NTFS file. good luck.

  • Network security key resets every few hours

Hi all, I have had an 802.11b wireless router for a few years now, and over the past few months I have been getting kicked off the network every few hours and having to reset the router in order to get back on. I ran a diagnostic check and it is telling me that my security key is not correct, even when it is the same saved password that I was using that earlier let me on the network (as in, I only typed it once for both times). Is this a known error? Has this ever happened to anyone else? I am thinking I will just replace the equipment but I'm curious to see if anyone else has had such strange experience. This happens to me on either XP or Vista. Any advice or thoughts are appreciated.

    Hi,
First thing you should try is to update the firmware of the router. As your router is a bit older.
After this Check the security key by logging to routers setup and if it is not your security key, then you can change it.
To check security key, connect your computer to one of the four ports on router using ethernet cable.
    1.      Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. Use your password if you have changed it earlier
    2.      Go to wireless tab.
    3.      Go to wireless security sub-tab
    4.      If security mode is wpa or wpa2 note down passphrase/shared key, if security mode is WEP note down wep key number 1. This will be your network key
