WRT54GS - all laptops in house have started losing connectivity

I have had this router working fine for a year to two and all of the sudden all of the laptops in the house have started exhibiting the same problem:
- Laptops have very strong signal to the router and are getting an IP just fine
- Attempts to connect over internet has started having lots of trouble that we've never seen before... sites either can't be contacted or when contacted never populate.
I  thought it was cable modem / cable isp issue but wired connection, while maybe a bit slow, is working fine.  I also downloaded and updated the firmware and that hasn't really helped.
If I dork around with the router settings -- change channel or just flip other random settings like SSID or password -- it will sometimes work for a while (minutes to hours) but will then after a while will get back into the same state where none of the laptops can connect to anything.
Is it possible that other neighbors access points near by are conflicting and trying to use the same channel and conflicting?  (I used to only see 1 or 2 others but now sometimes I see as many a 5 - 7).  If it might be that, is there any way that the thing can be configured to automatically change channel if it is noticing conflicts?
I've tried everything I can think of and would appreciate any suggestions..
Thanks

I have the same router and the same problem -- I've also had this router for about 2 years and it has worked fine until now. I have 2 laptops with wireless connections and a desk top with a wired connection. A few days ago, the wireless connections stopped working (when I connect the laptops via a wired connection, they work fine). One laptop doesn't see the router at all. When I search for networks on the other laptop, the router shows up with excellent signal strength (100%) but when I try to connect, I get an error indicating that "the selected wireless network is out of range or unavailable".
I updated the router firmware to the latest version and used the SES feature (which seemed to do nothing other than lighting up the logo on the router itself). I still get the same error, but occasionally I also get an error indicating that the encryption settings don't match -- I've checked the setting and they do match (no encryption.
I tried the settings suggested by helm -- they had no affect. Any other suggestions would be more than welcome.
Thanks.

  • Wireless losing connection to wired network and lan

I have a customer that has an 871W ISR. They are using WEP encryption and a mix of b and g cards. Recently they have started losing connection to all of their wired network resources and the wan, but they don't lose association with the 871W itself. They show excellent signal strangth and keep their IPs. A reboot of the router immediately fixes the problem. There seems to be no pattern or common event that triggers any of this. Anyone else seen this problem before? It started happening after I did a sh tech and the router locked up halfway through it, so I had to reboot. I've reloaded the image thinking that may fix the problem and it has not.

You can clear the interface statistics on the Detailed Status tab, and let traffic run for a time, then refresh the statistics. The ratio of errors to good packets sent and received should be better than it was prior to the test.

  • HT204150 I have started randomly losing contact numbers, but not email addys for same contact

I have started losing contact ph nbrs, not the email address if there is one. But random numbers just disappear.  Any advice?

    Hello hwestphal,
Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It looks like you were not able to send iMessages to your contacts, and you've solved it by turning iMessage and FaceTime off and on again. It sounds like after this, your friend is not receiving iMessages because they are sending from your phone number.
Next, I'd suggest the steps in this article to make sure that your phone number is linked to your Apple ID (email address):
iOS and OS X: Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime and iMessage - Apple Support
Your friend may also want to try these steps on their iPhone when they are in range of cellular service.

  • WRT54G Ver 6 Losing connection

The problem I'm having is everyonce in a while (in about a weeks time) all PC's in my network lose the ability to connect to the router and Internet. I have to unplug the router, wait for a few minutes, then plug it back up, turn my PC(s) my on, and I'm able to connect. I've checked with Linksys and I'm currently running the most current Firmware for Ver. 6.
Do any of you GURU's have any ideas or fixes for this? Thanks in advance
    I have the following:
    WRT54G
    Ver.6
    Firmware 1.02.0
IP Address assigned by DHCP server on the Router
Max IP addresses allowed to connect is 9
ISP: Charter Cable 3Mb, IP address is not Static
    3 PC's connected wired
    3 PC's connected wireless

    Thanks, PD

Sorry to interject a completely different answer here, but I have experienced the same problems.
Blame me for the newb I am, but here is what I did after losing conn and thinking that my modem was burned up after 2 years of use:
    1)  Attempted to buy a new DSL modem on Easter Sunday...good luck...
    2)  Went back home after not finding said modem to find connection working again
    3)  Wife did not use her desktop for 10 days due medical procedure (no connection problems)
    4)  Wife gets better, uses her computer, I start losing connection again.
    5)  Not realizing step 4, I call ATT dsl and am told, maybe you need a new filter on your DSL line.  DL speeds return to proper speeds, think I am fine.
    6)  Wife uses Outlook 18 hours later while I am on my networked machine, we both lose connection
    7)  After reconnecting all possible wires, realize maybe the problem is with the latest Windows Update Patch OR a router problem
    8)  Go to my trusty Best Buy contact at nearby store, named Jason, and ask Jason if he has heard anything like this in the last 6 weeks...He THANKED ME PROFUSELY as he and his brother were experiencing the SAME networking problem.  Jason removed the past 7 windows update patches and that removed the problem.
He has since turned off Windows Updates.  Jason said that a couple of the update patches could not be uninstalled, but the 7 or so that could be uninstalled did the trick and he has not had dropped connections since.
Anyone else experiencing this?  I talked to a cable modem user/friend and he has been experiencing similar problems but the Microsoft utility with his router allows him to double click to re-establish a connection, unlike me who has to power everything down, count to sixty, and power up.
(I have not yet uninstalled the patches but wondering what others have seen)
    Thanks for the posts peeps!
    Scott

    Hi,
Please post the HP product number for your PC. How to Find the HP Model Number and the HP Product Number or let HP automatically find your PC model number and HP network attached printers. This will allow others to review your issue, make suggestions and review your responses. This is usually the best way to get assistance.
If you search the Internet you will find numerous posts and suggestions that describe your situation with many, many different suggestions and possible solutions.  You will find pages and pages of suggestions that may or may not solve your problem. There isn't any one time cure all suggestion based on your symptom description.   You might want to try a few suggestions and see if you get lucky.
You may need to separate the "wheat from the chaff"  (hardware issues from software issues) or you might be chasing the issue for many, many hours.
I have seen hardware failures produce similar issues.  You might try running diagnostics for 1-2 hours and see if the diagnostics will detect an issue.  Even hardware diagnostics are not a cure all solution for possible hardware issues.
If you can roll your PC back to a known good Windows restore point before the issue started then give that a try.  Otherwise back up your data to external media and use the external HP recovery media to bring your PC back to a factory day one condition. Then without loading a lot of software add ons, try some multiple browsing for the time period that the issue typically occurs.

  • Questions About Losing Connection

Like other people I've noticed here, my WRTG45 v5 wireless router has recently started losing connection to the net multiple times a day. At first, we thought it was because our modem was old, so we bought a new one, but it didn't fix anything. So here are my questions:
    1. My dad seems to think that a configuration or setup CD (that we lost) is required to make the router work with the new modem. Is this true? I don't think so, but I have to ask just so I can get him to move on.
    2. I noticed in other posts here that programs like Bittorrent can cause the router to be overworked or whatever. This might explain our problem, as I use Bittorrent a lot (but not everytime the connection has dropped). If this is indeed the problem (or contributing to it), is there anyway to deal with it while still being able to use the program?
For the first couple months, the router was working fine. Even with Bittorrent running a lot, and all the computers (2 wired, 1 wireless, and 1 wired X-Box) engaging in various activities on the net. So this is very puzzling to me.
One more bit of information, I have given every computer a unique, static IP address. However, I noticed recently that when I look at the router configution after typing in its IP address in a web browser, that it is set to DHCP Enabled.
Also, in the advanced TCP/IP settings for this connection, under the WNS tab, the NetBIOS setting is set to the default of using NetBIOS from the DCHP server.
Since I am using static IP addresses, could these DHCP centered settings be causing problems? Although, even if they are, it still doesn't explain why the router was working fine months ago (unless someone changed stuff without my knowing).
Anyway, any help at all would be appreciated.

I assume you meant that you had a WRT54G v5 router.
First of all, the setup CD is not required.  All router settings can be made by going to the router's web pages at 192.168.1.1
It is possible that the static LAN IP addresses are causing your problem, if they were not set up correctly.  Linksys has a strict set of rules to follow regarding static LAN IP addresses.
With Linksys routers, a fixed (static) LAN IP addresses must be assigned in the device that is using the address.  So you need to enter the fixed address in the computer or printer, not in the router.
When using a Linksys router, any fixed LAN IP address must be outside the DHCP server range (typically 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.149), and it cannot end in 0, 1,  or 255.
Therefore any fixed LAN IP address would normally need to be in the range of
    192.168.1.2       thru 192.168.1.99  or
    192.168.1.150   thru 192.168.1.254
assuming you are still using the default DHCP server range.
Also, in the computer, when you set up a static LAN IP address, you would need to set the "Subnet mask" to 255.255.255.0  and the "Default Gateway" to 192.168.1.1
It is also important that no two devices on your network be set to the same static LAN IP address.
Check all of your static LAN IP addresses.  If you have violated any of the above rules for static LAN IP addresses, it could be the cause for your problem, and you should fix it before attempting any other router repairs or changes.
You should leave the DHCP server turned on.  This way, if you have a visiting friend who you want to connect to your system, it will be easy to do.   Leaving the DHCP server turned on should not cause any problems, even if all your addresses are fixed.   In general, you should let the DHCP server assign all addresses, unless there is a specific reason to use a static address.  You can mix static and DHCP assigned addresses on the same LAN, as long as you follow the above rules for static addresses.
Linksys routers have had problems when BitTorrent is used.  Your router has new firmware posted that should improve compatibility with BitTorrent.  It is firmware version 1.02.0   You will need to download and install this firmware (after fixing the static address problem, if any).  (Note:  When you update your firmware, you should use a computer that is wired to the router.  Also, when you do a firmware upgrade, turn off all other computers on your system, and unplug all other wires from the router.)   After you have installed the firmware, and powercycled the router, you will need to reset your router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.

  • Apple TV losing connection with iTunes on Windows

I am running iTunes on both an HP MediaSmart Windows Home Server (WHS) and a newly installed Windows Vista system.  I have multiple Apple TV's around the house - both ATV2's and ATV3's.
I was using the MediaSmart Server as my main iTunes server for Apple TV streaming.  That was the system's only function.  Unfortunately, I was constantly restarting iTunes and/or the system as my Apple TV's would lose connection to home sharing.  I thought WHS was the problem so I set up an unused computer to install Windows Vista (only license I had laying around) and installed iTunes.  Everything seemed to work fine for a few days then I started losing connection to that iTunes also.  I turned off the WHS system thinking it was causing the other iTunes to choke.  That did not help.
For reference, All of my computers are hard wired and I have some ATV's that are hard wired and some that are using wireless.  Wired or wireless....the problem still exists.  Also, I have competely disabled anti-virus and the firewall on both iTunes servers.
I can watch multiple movies at one sitting.  However, if iTunes is idle overnight (or even for a few hours it seems), my Apple TV's can not re-connect to home sharing and I need to restart iTunes.
Last night I disabled the AppleMobileDeviceHelper and the iPodService services hoping that would help.  I have not had a chance to fully test this out yet, but did stumble across quite a few posts where MANY others are having tjhis same issue.  Many are saying it has to do with the ATV3's sleep mode.  If I recall correctly, my major problems did seem to start about the time I got my first ATV3.  When I get home tonight I will disable the sleep mode on all of my ATV's.
Here is the question...just in case that works:  Is powering off the device by holding down the play button the same as allowing the device to "sleep"?  I ask because I use Harmony remotes and I have programmed them to power off the Apple TV when turning off all devices.
As I said, I have multiple ATV's (7 to be exact - 3 ATV3's and 4 ATV2's) and would hate to leave them all on all the time just to fix this problem.
Any feedback would be appreciated.  It is difficult to discern a solid solution from the 400,000 other posts on this topic.
    Thanks.

Sorry, I updated another thread I was a part of but didn't update my own thread.....ughhh!
I updated all of my ATV 2's and 3's to the latest firmware when it was released and have been problem free since. I do believe the major issue of not being able to connect after a period of inactivity has been corrected with the latest ATV firmware.
I can look at my network connection table using "netstat -an" in a CMD window and I do not see the massive number of connections I saw before the update.
Here is a link to the other thread I was referring to above:

Have you applied the latest firmware updates to your ATV 3's?

  • WAP 321 Losing connectivity

    Hi,
I installed four WAP 321 for a customer at a remote site. They are set to use a tagged VLAN 80 for management, there three additional VLANs used for SSIDs.
    They have latest firmware installed.
LAN setting has untagged VLAN unchecked, 'Green Ethernet' is enabled but I think I have tried disabling it.
Connections are to trunk ports on 3560 with native VLAN 1.
WPAs are in single-point access mode.
All seems to work, but after a period of time, I would guess about 5-6 hours, the WAPs start losing connectivity to the wired ports, I cant ping them and there is no entry on the switchport MAC address table. Sometime I see ARP entries for both VLAN 80 and VLAN 1 (not used).
The only way I can regain connectivity to these devices is to shut the switchports for a while (count to 20;-) then re-enable which I presume hard boots the device.
I haven't been able to verify yet but I suspect these devices are losing all connectivity to the wired network.
I really need a resolution for this, so any help gratefully received!
    Regards,
    Kevin.

For the sake of those that come after me .....
My WAP 321s connected for about 40 hours now so it looks like this is resolved, this looks like a bug in the 'OS/firmware - currently version 1.0.3.4
    To summarise;
In 'VLAN and IPv4 Address' settings your are advised to leave the Untagged VLAN Enabled, and leave the untagged (native) VLAN and Management VLAN as 1.  I haven't established if any one of these settings causes the problem, but certainly changing all three is likely to cause devices to hang within a working day.

  • My Apple TV is losing connection to my network

I've had the Apple TV 2 for several months, and it's been working flawlessly until a couple of weeks ago, when it started losing connection to my home network. In other words, I turn it on and I can't use it until I reconnect to my wi-fi password, etc. This never happened at all until a week or two ago, and it's happening nearly every day--once I reconnect it's fine, but the next day or so I have to re-enter my wi-fi password, a major annoyance. I have a feeling my router may be experiencing some problems, but still wondered if anyone else has this problem and if so, how it was resolved. In the past if I had any operational problem, just unplugging it and plugging it back in works fine, but this is a completely different issue, one of connectivity, and seems specific to the Apple TV and not necessarily any of my other internet devices. Once reconnected, BTW, all my previous settings seem to be intact.
    Thanks.

I'm having the same trouble as the OP, started around the same time.  AppleTV 2nd gen losing wifi PW about once a day.
    *  The only recent infrastructure change was me converting from ISP-provided wifi (2.4ghz "G") to an Airport Extreme (5ghz "N").  That's been working perfectly since April, and this ATV2 problem started only a couple of weeks ago (early July)
    *  I am the only 5ghz user around here.  Yes, I checked with inSSIDer.  Yes my PC is on the 5ghz band too.
    *  I haven't actually timed it, but it seems to happen almost exactly 24 hours apart - in my case it happens during the hour I'm out walking.
    *  I don't believe it's associated with sleep mode.  Mine is set to 4 hours, and:
---  I can pause a TV show, go walk for an hour, then come back and it's d/c'ed
---  I can pause a TV show after a reconnect, go to sleep for the night, wake up, wake the ATV2, and it resumes with no problems.

  • Apple magic mouse keeps losing connection with Macbook pro

I have a 2012 macbook pro, after upgrading to Mavericks(10.9.1, not have any other 3rd party software, just pure OS X), my magic mouse always losing bluetooth connection suddenly every one or two days. When losing connection, I found the bluetooth chipset type showing in macbook system information changed to unkown (FFFF). I have contacted with apple global support, and also have not gotten the solution. Just cleaning cache, and ect. but still didn't work.
When I downgrading the OS X to 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, same macbook, same magic mouse, work very well. Never happened lose connection issue during one and a half month.  So, it should be a Mavericks bluetooth driver's issue, or something reletived.
Any body have some good idea in solving this issue?
    Thanks in advance!

I have the same problem with a 2007 MacBook Pro on Snow Leopard. As soon as I changed the mouse's batteries, it started losing connection every few seconds. The mouse came with Energizer batteries originally - they supposedly don't fit well, but the mouse worked fine. I exchanged them with Duracell, which gave problems. Now I have Varta batteries installed, they give problems too. The paper-trick doesn't work for me.
Quite franky, I think it's rediculous that a fancy €69,- wireless mouse is so fussy about batteries. It's impossible to work with it. Is this just another way for Apple to get people to buy their batteries? I think a mouse this expensive should accept any and all batteries. Please, Apple: fix it. Seems like a really simple matter. Just put longer and stronger springs in the contacts for the negative poles.
    Thanks.

  • Network Drives Losing Connection from Server 2012 to Windows 7 64bit Machines

I have about 20 users at my facility and recently upgraded our server from one running server 2003 to one running server 2012. Since that occurred, I have had numerous issues that I did not encounter on the old server.
Lately, users have been losing connection to the shared network drives randomly and constantly. The drives will come back on-line on their own but it could be 2 minutes or 30 minutes before they do and when users are in the middle of working on a document
from the network, they are unable to save until the drive comes back. Manually disconnecting and re-mapping them works sometimes but then the problem will re-occur. I have tried re-doing the shares and security settings and run a couple of supposed hotfixes
on the client side and the server side to no avail.
Now our regional office is suggesting that I re-connect the old server and then rebuild the new one with server 2008 r2, something I would like to avoid if possible.
I feel like this is a simple setting that I am missing, no conditions have changed except for the new server.
The server is a Intel Xeon CPU E5-2609 2.40GHz with Server 2012 64 bit on it. All computers (except on on 32 bit) are running Windows 7 Enterprise edition 64 bit.
    Please help.

I made this change to the registry on the server and am waiting to see if I have any more drops.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
    Value:
    autodisconnect
    Data
    type : REG_DWORD
    Value:
    ffff (Hex)
There was a client side change suggested but I am missing that value for the client side change and others in the organization who don't have it are not experiencing this problem.

Those links weren't particularly helpful to me. They convinced me to install the drivers for my USB 2.0 card, but that didn't make a difference. Still no OS X without a PRAM reset if I've dared to venture into OS 9.
It's always been my understanding that an unblessed System Folder will not be selectable in OS 9's Startup Disk control panel. My folders are blessed and healthy. Of course I'm running 9.2.2, as stated in my first message. I also frequently verify and repair my disks and permissions.
I did a verbose startup of OS X, and noticed something funny about "ATY...too old." Perhaps this problem is related? I ventured into my system.log file and there it was, repeated over and over, everytime I've booted this computer:

Anyone know how to interpret that? Is it related to my problem? I googled it, and all I found was a web board of people arguing over whether the Apple installed stock ATI Rage video card that came in the G3's is appropriate for Panther. i recently upgraded to Lion and i find that my computer is running slow and applications are crashing.  For example I have Word 2011 for Mac and it crashes all the time I end up losing my work.  It often happens when I'm in class using notebook and when I press record my computer starts thinking and it freezes.
Also, I feel that it overheats often and my battery runs out pretty quickly.  I had the macbook (black) and this never happened before.  I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something with my computer.I bought my computer summer 2010, I don't think this should be happening. Please Help......

This is exactly what keeps happening to mine too.  I was at a conference taking notes, and I was
using the Notebook template, and doing some audio recording simultaneously.  About 3 hours into the conference (not consistently recording, but on and off with the sessions) my file wouldn't save anymore, saying something like "File cannot be modified while in use with another program" and "Invalid file name" when I would go back into my folder to look for it). I tried installing some updates from Microsoft, and when I restarted, I was at least able to open my old notes again, and so far it looks like the audio was working.  However, today at the conference, the same thing happened again, but I wasn't actively recording any audio (though after I had copy and pasted my second file of notes into the original, I went back to using it after re-naming it).
Does the crash happen to you under similar cirucumstances?  The update might help a little, but it is definitely not the solution.  Does anyone have any solutions?  Lion shouldn't be this buggy... I moved to Mac to get away from the garbage of bugs and compatibility issues...

Make sure you have a full backup of your iPhone before recyncing with the iMac as during this process all data will be wiped out from your iPhone.
Going forward you may want to check icloud which makes life easier.
