WRT54GS - Slow internet when hooked up

Hi all....I have a WRT54GS (seems to be a popular unit with some issues) and here is my thing:
I hooked it up about two months ago and had no problems with it. Last week, I started having slow internet connections when the router was hooked up. I ran the cable modem straight to the PC and it was fine. I just hooked up the router again and it was horribly slow. I used testmy.net to test my speeds and my download time was about 143 times faster WITHOUT the router (with speedbooster, no less). The only thing I've done is to do a firmware upgrade to the most current version and the major problems began. I checked my setting and they all seem fine.
Does anyone have any ideas? Unfortunately I did not save a copy of the configuration before upgrading. Thanks....

Thanks for the help.
Here is what I have so far:
1. ISP is Time Warner Cable, and I am not sure of what I was setup for, but my internet connection icon in my system tray shows 100 Mbps.
2.  The modem doesn't have a name brand on it that I can find, but the model is 60194E-A02. Google says it is an Ambit modem.
3.  I used testmy.net for some tests last week and here is what I got (using my laptop):
      a.  Wired to modem directly  - download speed 773 kbps, connection 6.33 Mbps; upload speed 18kbps, connection 0.1 Mbps
      b. Using router - connection was so slow it times out.
So I hooked it to my desktop PC, and ran the tests:
      a. Direct to modem:
Download Connection is:: 7155 Kbps about 7.16 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB)
Download Speed is:: 873 kB/s
Upload Connection is:: 162 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 386 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 20 kB/s
     b.  Using router:
Download Connection is:: 45 Kbps about 0.05 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)
Download Speed is:: 5 kB/s
Upload Connection is:: 17 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 2 kB/s
Only other thing I can think of is that I put the new modem beside the router. Earlier today I put the modem back where it was, about three feet away. It actually seems to have helped. Is there a true phenomenon when the units are side-by-side?
Thanks...Rick Ferguson

wanting to use extreme at base and express in another part of the house

How is the express getting internet? What modem is it plugged into?
How is the extreme setup? New extreme cannot be setup with 5.6 utility.. you must use latest 6.3. Which also means you cannot setup from computer using less than Lion .. or you must use iOS with latest utility but it has limited configuration cf the computer version.
IPv6 is also needed.. turn on local link.

  • WRT54GS - No Internet when plugged in, but I get Xbox LIVE...

I have Verizon DSL for Internet, and when I switch the Ethernet cable over to the Router, I have no Internet on my computer, but I have Xbox LIVE...?
I'm lost; how do I fix this?

First check the IP when directly connected to the DSL modem in case if its 192.168.1.1 then connect only the computer to the router without the modem connected then change the lan ip of the router to 192.168.2.1 and the power cycle the network i.e. turn off power to modem and router, connect the modem - router - computer, power up the modem wait for the light, followed by the router. This should work. Also make sure that you computer is not set to static IP address.
Start-control panel - network connection - right click local area connection and select properties - tcp/ip properties - It should be set to obtain IP automatically.

  • Slow Internet when loading websites using  webkit based browsers.

Update: Turn out its only something that happens with using a Web Kit based browser such as Safari or Shiira. It works perfect in Firefox (which I like but would prefer Safari or Shiira)
Anyone know what would make this happen?
    Old info:
1.83ghz MBP with a 1gig of RAM and I noticed the internet is very slow. This happens on any location seemingly (i've tried 2 different networks) and I don't know why. Actual download speeds once started are PERFECT but many web pages take over 30 seconds to load. During the load time its seemingly hung and I mean loading hung not system hung.
I'll see if I can make a list of what I've done so far.
Used Onyx to clear just about everything it clears
    Fixed permissions
Tried turning the Nic from AUTO sense to 100BT with ALL the different modes (eg half duplux, full duplex)
Used bootcamp to reboot to Windows (its perfect there)
Tried using several different well known sets of DNS servers (no change)
    Disabled IPV6
Created a New Location in networking on a lark, no help.
    Tried Different Web Browsers
I'm lost, graphics in particular seems to give it trouble making sites like newegg load VERY slow, but its not consistant sometimes after I load one page of a site the rest load fine after that. Other times each page is slow even after I've connected to the first one.
edit: this is wired OR wireless btw

Downgrade gnutls, 3.3.3 is causing this.

  • Slow internet when phone rings

    Hi all,
I am fixing the network for a small 2-level office, which is using ADSL Telstra internet.
#1: Level 2 only have an empty rack cabinet. I want to have Internet accessible, how can I check if this cabinet connected to the rack cabinet in the level 1?
#2: Level 1: I've got an EFTPOS connecting to the modem on "phone" port via an ADSL filter/splitter and a Cisco IP phone connecting directly to the modem on a LAN port.
Whenever the phone rings, the Internet connection gets very slowly. Do I need one more ADSL filter for the phone?
And should I upgrade to cable internet?
Any help would be great. Thanks alot in advance.

It would compeltely depend on the configuration of the VoIP connection and any limitations in place as a result of the network of the carrier who are providing the service...  You might be best to contact the provider directly, if that is Telstra, and it is currently under a DOT / Digital Office Technology plan your best bet would be to have a word with the Business team directly or your local Telstra Business Center, they will be able to go over the options and see if they can provide an entire solution which is best suited to the business... on the phone they are on 132000.

  • Very slow internet after installing 10.5.3

Hello all, this is the very first time I have encountered any problems with my Macbook and I am hoping I can get some help here.
About a month ago I came home from college and hooked my Macbook up to the wireless router at home, everything was running fine. We have fiber optic internet so usually my speeds are blazing fast. Recently however I installed the 10.5.3 update and now my internet speeds are very dismal. I am having trouble getting my Macbook to connect to the router at all, much less load any web pages.
I have taken an ethernet cable and plugged my Macbook directly in to the router to see if things load any faster, and unfortunately things are still just as slow over a wired connection. After typing in a URL you will sit there at a blank web page for about 45 seconds to a minute before it even starts loading the page, and when the page does load it takes forever to pull up and images take even longer to display. If it helps at all our router is a dlink DI-524 wireless router.
I was browsing through these forums yesterday to see if I could find a solution to my issue. so far I have tried the following:
-set router to broadcast in G mode only (instead of mixed mode)
    -removed encryption from router
-tried various encryption settings (64 bit WEP, 128 bit WEP, WPA, etc)
-updated the firmware of my router
-created test account on my macbook, opened internet browser on it, everything still runs slow
-deleted cache for safari/mozilla as well as the .plist files, still slow internet
when i called apple the agent suggested putting in my os X CD and do an archive and install, i did and once i was set back to os X 10.5 i was unable to connect to wifi at all, and wired connection over ethernet seemed just as slow as before. when i check for apple updates the 10.5.3 update was my only option, i couldnt choose 10.5.2 so installing that would put me back where i was before.
in the end i set my computer up last night to do a restore from my time machine backup. my machine has been restored to the backup i created just before i tried the archive and install, so im back to running OS X 10.5.3 now.
I'm sorry this post got so long, I just wanted to make sure that I included details of what I've done so far. Again I would like to stress that I am having this problem on my macbook even with my computer hooked directly to the router with my ethernet cable. (using that same cable and hooking up any one of my windows computers in the house results in fast and effortless web browsing so i know the cable is good)

It's not a matter of Mac OS X being "picky" but rather various ISPs not keeping up with changes in the DNS standard.
In the most recent case, 10.5.3 had to revert to a previous method of performing some DNS lookups because various ISPs hadn't bothered to update their servers to handle what has been the recommended way of handling lookups for the past eight years.
OpenDNS also has done a lot of work to make sure their DNS servers work as fast as possible; ISPs have absolutely no incentive whatsoever to provide fast DNS services.

  • WRT160N v3 - Slow internet

    Dear Staff,
I have very slow internet when connected through this router.
When I connect the modem cable directly to the computer is is much faster.
Via WRT160N router Download Speed: 29,844 kbps
Via modem only Download Speed: 93,851 kbps
This is a huge discrepency. 60,000 kbps!!!
Please advise - as it has been like this ever since it was installed.
    Very frustrated.
    J

Open the setup page of the router and change the MTU size to 1365. Save the settings and power cycle the router. See if that makes any difference.
Is your computer wired or wireless?
If wireless then try changing some advanced wireless settings on the router. Go to Wireless tab and click on Advanced wireless settings sub tab. Change Beacon Interval to 75, RTS and Fragmentation threshold to 2304. Save the settings.

  • Slower internet connection when connection wireless network

Currently using a Linksys WRT54GL wireless broadband (firmware v4.30.5) router in conjunction with a Thomson Speedtouch 546i ADSL router (ISP provided).
My problem is that when I connect to the internet over the wireless network I experience a much slower internet connection in comparison with when I use a tp-cable.
Tested with various online "speed-tests" (I know they are not to be trusted, but they do give a basis for comparison):
    Over wireless network : ca.6000kbits/sec.
Direct cable from pc to router (tested on both routers):12-13000kbits/sec.
Hope anyone has any idea what the problem may be, and any help is greatly appreciated.

Change the beacon to 50 ....and reduce the RTS and the fragmentation by 40 each.....these options are found under the advanced wireless settings...
Also make sure that u have the latest drivers installed for the Wireless NIC.

  • Anyone know when Mac will have the fix for the slow internet due the 10.8.2. upgrade?

I just uped to 10.8.2 on a Mac pro, and know the internet throughput has dropped from a Ping of 87, download 24.24 Mbps , upload 3.82 Mbps to a ping of 248, download .37 and up of .17.  I have plugged two other Macs (one at a time) into the same network cable as above and got the per 10.8.2 upgrade speeds. Seems that one must conclude that the slow internet issue must be due to the 10.8.2 upgrade. When will Mac have the fix for this?

This is sounding more and more like your ISP's DNS servers are slow; have you tried using Google Public DNS and checking if that speeds things up for you?

  • Internet speed slows down when connected via airport express

Internet speed slows down when connecting via airport express. When connecting directly via the timecapsulethe internet speed is ok, when connecting via the airport express the speed slows down. What can I do to change that? Any suggestions?

Turn off the AirPort Express completely as a test, and move your computer very close to the location of the Express.
As I said before, the Express can only extend the bandwidth (speed) that it receives from the Time Capsule, so the speed that you see there with the Express powered off will be the fastest speed of which the Express is capable.
The Express will make the signal go further when it extends....but it will not make the signal go faster.
A good location for a device that extends wirelessly is a point that is about half the distance from the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you locate the AirPort Express too far from the Time Capsule or there are more than a couple of walls in the signal path, the signal will be very slow by the time that it reaches the Express....and the Express simply extends a signal that has already slowed down significantly.
If you already have the Express located about half the distance between the Time Capsule and general area that needs more wireless coverage, how many walls, ceilings or other obstructions are there in the signal path between the Time Capsule, the AirPort Express and the area that needs more coverage?
Often, due to obstructions, it is just not possible to achieve good performance when you try to extend a network wirelessly. The solution is connect the AirPort Express to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
There is virtually no signal loss with this type of connection, so the Express can be located exactly where it is needed and it will produce a much faster wireless signal in this type of setup.

  • Significantly slow internet

Setting up time capsule was fine, didnt take that long and not too many obstacles to face. I also bought the new n capable express that is extending my network as we speak. But the main issue I have is my internet speed, my linksys router which is bridged to the TC is getting much better speeds then the network that the TC is on. If I do speedtest.net my TC gets an average of 6 mbps. The linksys is consistently getting 15+ mbps. Whats the deal with that!! I thought that having the Airport express would help to give higher speeds to parts of the house that otherwise never got much coverage. If this is what is going to be expected from TC then I might as well return it and stick to the realiable linksys wrt54g.
p.s. as far as the specs of airport utility is concernced; TC is set to 802.11n [email protected] becuase 5ghz made connection speeds worse, its set to channel 2,WPA2 Personal
when i sit with my mbp right next to the TC i get 30+ mbps but its horrible in the spot that i use it the most. in the same spot linksys completely blows it out the water

Check your DNS settings. Compare them to your older router. This is usually the main reason you'll get slow internet surfing performance.
If you want to test it, temporarily set your DNS settings (on the TC) to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. These use the Domain Name servers from OpenDNS.Com which are free to the public. They'll bypass your ISP's DNS settings, but may be enough to determine if that is what the problem is. If you're using static IP addressing on your computer, check those settings as well.
I seriously doubt it's an issue with the TC, unless, on the remote chance you got a bad one. Most of the time it's the configuration.
Good luck, let us know what you find out!

  • Slow Internet ... all of a sudden?

Well, like most people, when I signed up with Verizon, I bought the ''fastest internet.''   It was fine for a while, but around September, we decided to upgrade our channel package - and our internet to the new ''fastest internet'' which I believe was the 25/25.  We had my whole family over on Christmas (everyone hooked to my wifi) with no issue.
Now we're in February and all of sudden it takes up to 5 minutes to load a show on Netflix (played through our roku).  I called customer service and they persuaded me to upgrade to the 50/50.  Of course the slow internet is still an issue.  We disconnect all computers and our Verizon wireless phones to try and get our streaming speed up to par.. still no luck.  My bundled deal is costing us almost $200 (that’s with the reduced channel package and upgraded internet speed), and I'm feeling so incredibly ripped off.  For that kind of money,  I should be streaming with no problem.  Can't wait to get out of contract.  I'm just trying to understand what changed.

    You are not alone.
    See here: http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-Internet/Extreme-drop-in-download-speed-every-night-10PM-11PM/td-p...
The fact that they convinced you that 25 Mbps is not enough for a couple tablets streaming simultaneously is probably exactly what they want.

  • Slow internet because of tiger upgrade. Help please.

OK... I've searched through the threads, and other forums, and see that it IS a fairly common problem, but there's still no fix.
I finally upgraded from 10.3.9, to tiger, and my internet connection is awfull. 30-45 seconds to load a page.
It's not my router, it's not my shared connection with a PC laptop, it's tiger... and from what I've read, it started at the 4.3.3 upgrade.
Here's just a couple discussions I've found on the issue:
    http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=tiger&Number=732686&pa ge=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=14&fpart=1
    http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=tiger&Number=735358&pa ge=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=31&fpart=1
Some of those seem to think that it's just in a wireless connection, but I'm not wireless, and I've found many other people in my same boat.
What's the deal??? how do I fix it? please?
    Dual 2.0 G5   Mac OS X (10.3.6)
p.s. I've run diskwarrior, repaired permissions, etc. It started the exact second I upgraded to tiger 10.4.6... before that I was flying.

OK... My best understanding is this:
All day (I work from home, so I'm on A LOT), internet seems to work just fine. Maybe a hair slower than before, but not very noticable... and it could be my imagination.
About 8:30-9pm it suddenly come's to a hault. I'll be loading one page fine, then the next page is slow, along with all others that follow. About 1 out of 10 pages loads fast, and about 9 of 10 are slow. On the other hand, if I'm downloading something (I'm in the film industry, and always downloading others' work to critique), it downloads just as fast as during the day... even when a regular page won't load, I see it downloading just fine in the "downloads" window. Most of the time is says "contacting" in the bottom of the Safari window, but sometime's it'll find the site and load it most of the way, then freeze.
Some pages seem to take longer than others, especially these apple forums, which are pretty much impossible to get to after nine. I get this message:
Safari can’t open the page “http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=519698&tstart=0”. The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.
The forum's I'm a member to seem to have a lot of trouble, and myspace seems to have a lot of trouble.
Then about 11:00 to midnight, it clears up, and is back to it's normal pace. I've been doing speed tests here and there, and when it's slow, the results show that I'm 95% slower than the average "charter" user. During the day, it says I'm 25% slower.
I hooked up my laptop tonight straght to my cable modem, and it seemed to run just fine. That would rule out ISP problems... but it was getting a little late, so I want to try it again tomorrow night during the REALLY slow time's before I rule out ISP.
By the way it's acting, it would make sense that it's just peak hours and my ISP is bogged down... but even during peak hours, it shouldn't be THAT slow, and sometime's I get that error message saying I've lost internet connection. Also, in my first post I posted a link to another forum of others' having the same sort of problem, and their description is VERY similar to what's happening to me.
Sorry if this post seems a little confusing... it's late, and I'm tired.
