WRT55AG ping spike

I have been getting these really weird lags lately and I ended up setting up two pings:
1 pings google.com while the other pings my router (192.168.1.1)
However, recently I've started to have a problem. It will work fine for a reasonable period of time - but around every 10 minutes or so I get a burst of latency. It's enough to boot me off of my game, which gets a bit irritating. I'm even getting these spikes when I am just surfing the internet. I ended up opening up command prompt and typing in the following:
ping google.com -t
Occasionally I will get a series of 3-4 Request timed out. or I will get a few lines of 1000ms+ responses.

These are just a couple of examples of the google ping, my router ping looks very similar with those high numbers at the same time this is going on on the google ping.
Around 8:30 PM to about 11:30 PM, the lag just occurs nonstop. I'm not sure if this is maybe my ISP being overloaded or if it is something on my end. But I find myself getting disconnected from my game multiple times - my latency bar spikes up to anywhere from 1k to 4-5k range, which makes it completely unplayable.
As far as services and things that I'm using. I'm using Windows Vista. My router is a Linksys WRT55AG version 2. These problems are occurring simultaneously on multiple computers connected to the network. I've already set the MTU to 1400 and the firmware is up to date.

Hey try resetting the router reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out configuring the router once again & it will definately work!!

I want to know why im paying more money for infinity to recieve a poorer service

Do you have any wireless devices connected to your router when you're playing?
If possible, when you experience these huge ping spikes can you quickly access your router and turn the wireless off from within the settings and see if your ping improves.
I'm asking this because I started getting huge ping spike of up to 500ms and incredible outbound packet loss up to 70% which rendered games like Battlefield 3 unplayable (Rubberbanding like crazy...) and found out that turning off the wireless fixed the issue.
I managed to narrow it down to my Sister's iPad 3. For some reason whenever she browses with safari it causes my connection to go haywire.
Just a suggestion, might be worth trying.

  • Occasionally ping spikes with Cisco E3200

I recently replaced my old router with a Cisco E3200. I installed the included software which also had me to downloaded and installed new firmware.
I have 2 computers hooked up to the router via wire and wife using wireless on her laptop.
I'm playing games on internet and soon I noticed I got occasionally ping spikes.. The ping get beyond 1000 - 1500 so the screen is in fact temporary freezed. Sometimes those spikes can occur with 10-15 minutes inbetween them sometimes it can be an hour or more before I notice it.
I'm running Windows 7 on both my computers. I first thought it was Microsoft was to throttle the packets so I did the change in the registry.  But these spikes still happen. After some testings I also notice they happen at the same time on both computers so my conclusion is that it's something with the router.
Anyone have a solution for this?

I haven't changed the frequenze for the wireless so I think it's on 2.4Ghz?
I have done some tests and now without the wireless connected. Only with the 2 dekstops connected with wire.
The connection drops on both at the same time. Someone suggested me to get pingplotter and this is what it shows:

  • Skype causing massive ping spike while playing Lea...

So this started happening about a week and a half ago. When ever I'm in a call with people and playing a game at the same time I'll get massive ping spikes. My friends say I sound like a robot so I know it's affecting Skype too.
The thing is this never used to happen at all. I had no problem running skype and a game of LoL at the same time. I called my ISP and they tried everything. They even came out here and replaced my modem but that didn't help.
I don't know where else to turn. If it's a computer related issue maybe you guys will know? It also lags with other voice applications. (Curse Voice, Oovoo, ect.) Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will provide any other info needed. Thanks.

The Robot voice, generally happens when you are low on bandwith. LoL should probably not take up to much bandwith 20KBps max, Skype will use approx 8-10 KBps for voice, in your case x 5 (5 players), if direct connected to your friends.
In general, when this happens. another application, webbrowser refresh, background downloads, and other non Skype related issues, is the cause for this.
You may monitor your bandwith usage, using performance monitor, press ctrl+shift+esc goto the performance tab and press the resource monitoring button, and choose the network tab.
    Other tips:
Portforward Skype (google that phrase), or use UPNP to avoid relaying.
In your new shiny router, use QoS to reserve bandwith for Skype (see the manual, or use google like the rest of us).
Shut down all network intensive programs like BT or other upload users.
If you share the connection with anyone ...... well thats pretty much it.
At last, it's not called ping, it's called latency, ping is the tool to messure it
Even laster: check your computer for malware that might use your bandwith without your knowledge: https://www.malwarebytes.org

  • [Solved] League of Legends Ping Spike Gt70 2PC Dominator. Please Help!! thanks 3

    Hey guys,
I just bought this new laptop 3 days ago, and I am a major League of Legends player.   It's official that some program or hardware MSI comes with does not work well with wifi.
Current Network Adapter: Killer Wireless-N 12012 Network Adapter
Home wifi according to Speedtest.net:  Ping- 23ms  Download- 14.40 Mbps  Upload-1.02Mbps
During gameplay, System Idle process stays around 70-80, nbd
My college i5 lenevo nongaming 3 year old laptop (that my college sells) runs on my wifi with yes occasional pings, and some lag, but never like the ones MSI provides.    I cannot even play, once I get near my lane (against other opponent), I get ping spikes from 150-400) that lasts a few seconds, every 10 seconds.    It occurs more frequently the more I move around or go to where there is more action.
    1) Please do not ask about my wifi.  The fact that my i5 can run smoothly and this 1.5k+ gaming laptop does not, on same wifi, same game, means wifi is not the problem, (I'm not complaining about lag from my incompetent wifi .  I'm complaining about the every 7 second pingspikes that last 1-3 seconds, that makes me unable to play the game, which the lenevo doesn't have.)
2)I've google searched almost every existing similar problem, and each forum thread has not been answered completely.  Some people seem to have problems with Dota, too
3)From what I've read so far, there is possibility of the uninstalling the GE Force Experience or Killer Network manager, but people just seem to suggest it, and not actually confirm that that will fix the problem.   If it is confirmed, please say so and say how to disable them.
I only have 4 days before I head back to college, and I would wish to fix this problem before I head back.  I tried running netstat options on cmd, and there didn't seem to be a problem.  I was wondering if it is some application that eats up the wifi cause ping on the game.
I really like this laptop, the fact that it shuts down and starts up really fast, and it can run up to 150+ frames per second, which is amazing, but I would really like to have some definite answer to this problem, because I know I am not the only one.   Thank you!!!

Try to play another game and ping your router to see if there is any ping peak which might cause the issue.
About LOL, if you don’t experience such spikes while ping the router or paly other game, then I think you should find Riot for some help.
There are many users talking about the ping issue.

  • Frequent ping spikes

    Hello,
In general my internet has been working fine, but recently when playing online games I have been experiencing consistent and frequent spikes in ping. My ping typically starts off around 70 or so, which is manageable, but will spike to above 300 fairly frequently (around once a minute I'd say, perhaps once every two minutes), rendering most games unplayable. I'd like to note that around a month ago I wasn't experiencing this issue.
Here are the entries from the router log:
    21:37:33, 16 Jun.
( 84.540000) DSL noise margin: 6.10 dB upstream, 3.10 dB downstream
    21:37:32, 16 Jun.
( 83.440000) DSL line rate: 1184 Kbps upstream, 16895 Kbps downstream
The results of the performance test:
    Download - 14.52
    Upload - 0.35
    Ping - 58.25ms
Finally, the quiet line test is completely silent as far as I can tell. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
Not sure if this helps but I've also done a trace route and given the results here. Not entirely sure how to interpret them myself.

  • Ping Spikes

I'm having trouble with the variable ping times on my infinity 1 line. Speed is fine, but as the picture below shows, ping times can spike massively.
Looking into these spikes, seems to suggest that the delay is introduced by IP: 213.121.193.105 peer3-te0-1-0-15.telehouse.ukcore.bt.net
Any idea how I can fix this, as it is playing havoc with online gaming.

When you find out please let us know.

  • Laggy ping spikes to WRT54GL

Recently, I've been noticing lag spikes in a few different games I've been playing. After a few different tests, I think I've narrowed it down to my WRT54GL (no lag spikes when connected directly to the cable modem), though I'd like some feedback on whether the reasoning is sound.
Using two different computers (a desktop connected wirelessly, and a laptop also connected wirelessly), I've tried non-stop pings to the router directly (192.168.1.1). Approximately once a minute on the desktop, one of my pings will either get no response, or a response in the realm of ~1000ms. On the laptop, strangely, the same thing happens but less often (once every 3 minutes or so). Testing the router wired directly to the laptop, I saw the same thing twice over a 10 minute timespan.
I shouldn't be seeing behavior like this directly from the router, should I? Admittedly, I've never sat down to watch pings for 10 minutes straight to a router before, but I was under the impression that I shouldn't ever see lag spikes directly from the router, though I didn't want to jump to any conclusions without some input.

Maybe those games need some port forwarding on your router...Try to look for the appropriate port numbers so that you can do port forwarding on your router...

  • Incredibly high ping spikes daily, can't use the i...

    Hey all,
i play a lot of online games its just infuriating when my ping will remain a constant 30-50 then suddenly start spiking up all the way into the thousands (15k at its worse) so i can't load up any web pages or anything. It sometimes stop after 5-10 minutes or on bad days require a restart of the router.
It happens pretty much everyday at the most unconvinient times, does anyone know what could potentially be causing this and a fix? It's really affecting the games i play, it just ruins them as i can't reconnect or anything.
    Thanks

  • Pings in evening

    Hi,
I'm having problems with pings in the evening on bt total broadband option 3.
Speed is mostly fine but pings after 6pm go from 30ms to around 100-300 when checked with tracert. It only started last week and nothing has changed on my end. It makes playing any sort of online game a bit of a pain.
The ping spikes are not constant but seem to happen every 30 sec or so, it's easy to show with a tracert.
On a tracert the ping starts to jump around the 7th hop.
