Pings in evening

Hi,
I'm having problems with pings in the evening on bt total broadband option 3.
Speed is mostly fine but pings after 6pm go from 30ms to around 100-300 when checked with tracert. It only started last week and nothing has changed on my end. It makes playing any sort of online game a bit of a pain.
The ping spikes are not constant but seem to happen every 30 sec or so, it's easy to show with a tracert.
On a tracert the ping starts to jump around the 7th hop.

Thanks for any replies.

Still really rubbish spikey pings after 7pm. Is this ever gonna be fixed or even acknowledged?
Am quite sure its not my line or anything on my network as it only appears after certain hops in a tracert, which points to bad routing.

  • Slow Speeds/High Ping During Evening

Just signed up for Comcast this week.  Noticed bad lag while gaming and speed tests indicate slow download speeds (<10 Mbps when I should be getting 75 Mbps) and high ping (200-300ms).  Checked everything hardware related on my end and couldn't find an issue.  Finally, did some trace routing and discovered high ping on Comcast servers in San Jose and Great Oaks.  See tracert results below. These issues seem to occur during the evenings (8pm to midnight PST), but the few checks I did during the day seemed fine.  It may be related to streaming volume at night.  In any event, it's ruining my internet experience.  How can this be resolved? Tracing route to e10905.dspb.akamaiedge.net [23.211.8.171]

The same thing is happening for me. I live in Houston, Texas and my ping to a game called LoL was around 80 now its at 90. It's not a huge difference and I don't notice anything when gaming. I'm just curious as to why this has happened?

  • Problems with pinging ASA 5505

    Hi
im having strange network issues and wonder if my ASA 5505 can be the problem.
Memory usage on my ASA is 232MB of 256MB. Running 8.4(4)1
It stops responding on the inside interface suddenly when i try to ping it. We have about 20 clients on the network.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
Is this issue intermittent or the pings are never working ?
If it is intermittent , you would have to check if the pings are even reaching the ASA device interface and that should be able to isolate the issue to the ASA hardware.
You can apply a simple capture on the Interface that you are testing with:-
    capture cap interface <Name Of Interface> match icmp host <Interface IP> <Test PC IP>
    capture asp type asp-drop all
Also , collect the show tech at that time of the issue and we should be able to verify the issue.
Is there a Layer 3 hop or another Layer 2 Switch connected between the client and the ASA device ?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Vibhor Amrodia

  • Having really high pings, packet loss and been on ...

Hi. I've been on to BT 4-5 times in the last few weeks. Everytime its the same thing I do all their checks and run the speed test. Its the same thing over and over. When i try to explain to them the problems i,m having they said your speed is within the acceptable range. I,m at a loss with dealing with BT. The customer server is terrible.
Basically the problems i,m having is really high pings. Even doing the BTwholesale speedtest my pings was usally in the 30ms range now they are 70 on average now. I play alot of online games. And Everything is unplayable. I know there is definitely something wrong. Either with the routing or some of the nodes on bt.
Today I was trying to play Diablo 3, the lag spikes was huge every 2-3 seconds jumping to 1-2k ms latency. I ran some winMTR tests and i,m having alot of packet loss. I tried to explain that to BT on the phone. But its like the dont have a clue what i,m talking about or wont attempt to help me with the issue. All game companies usally tell me ISPs are always willing to help with these problems. But BT seem to refuse to help with latency ping issues, just your speed is fine etc .
I,ve also noticed people in the BT forums saying something about G.INP and people needing HH5 Type B. Can someone explain to me what this is or if its something happening to my cabinate. I,m using the BT HH5 type A. From what i see the about the G.INP sounds like the issues i,m currently facing.
Can some Mod please help me. I,m really losing hope with BT.

    Hi Guys.
Still facing these issues. Is BT not going to do anything about it? Here is a WinMTR test to a game server i,m playing.

217.41.216.109 seems to be an issue with this. Getting packet loss of 7% and the the ping shoots up to almost 400 while the average is around 30.
I,ve tried everything BT have told me, i've phoned loads and loads of times to seek help. I dont know what else to do. Pings and latency is horrible. And i dont just mean little lag. Every online game is unplayable. Webpage loading slowing or broken images .

  • 10.3.9 - 10.4 Migration failed! Server lost! - How to set DHCP info?

Today we tried to migrate our Xserve from 10.3.9 to 10.4
We've chosen to start the update from a PowerBook and attached our Xserve in FireWire Target Mode.
Update/Install ran smoothly, BUT ON RESTART WE LOST CONTACT TO OUR XSERVE
    In system.log it says
HeadlessStartup: Enabling root account so we can remotely administrate.

How can we set DHCP information without ssh access only access to the files?

    Where to set?
    Any information is greatly appreciated.

The main ethernet port had been disabled by the installer!
We connected a powerbook (just plain ethernet cable) to the other port which was running with some old ip number and send
    ping 224.0.0.1
This gives you the ip number
then we logged in via ssh
    then
    networksetup -setnetworkserviceenabled "Ethernet…" on
Now we can work through the messed up install…

  • [solved] rt2870 problems

I have Arch installed (as a dual boot with Mandriva). I installed from the 2009/8 iso.
I have a wireless LAN with a static IP - I connect to my network with dhcp in Mandriva; I've set up rc.conf on that basis.
I follow the beginners guide both in Live CD and in the installed version.
If do iwlist it shows my card but any and all attempts to connect to the web fail.
The problem comes when I enter (my encryption is wep).
iwconfig ra0 essid "myessid" key "mykey"
It never connects and breaks any association that may have been made before that.
Ping cannot even reach my network, let alone google!
I don't have practicable wired access.
Any ideas? Is there a card or dongle I can get that works well with Arch? It looks really interesting to do and I don;t want to fall at this hurdle!
Maybe there is a way I can download Arch with kernel 2.6.31 - I gather I can just blacklist a couple of modules in rc.conf?
    Thanks for any ideas/help

So I just got a 3 months Old iphone 4s which is still under warranty. I charged my phone to 100% last night before going to bed. When i woke up at 8 in the morning my phone was switched off and the battery was drained . This is ridiculous that I dint use my phone while i was asleep and the battery drained completely. Even though, Apple store replaced my battery with a new one. I had set alarm for 8è o clock and my phone had died and due to that i woke up at 8:40am.  I had turned off my location services, ping and even 3G to monitor the usage. Has any one been expeirencing this kind of problem ?
I am so going to apple store today to get an replacement, this is ridiculous I cant wake up in the middle of the night to check if my phone has juice init to wake me up in the morning for the work. I have been using apple phones since 2008 and never came such problem . Please assist me as this phone is the main source of communicating with the rest of the world.

  • Getting Wireless Users onto LAN

    Hello All,
We currently purchased 2 AP's and a 2106 WLC and I am having some trouble getting the wireless users to communicate to the network on the other side of the WLC. Here is a very simple diagram on how this is all connected.
    3750X L3 Switch --> 2106 WLC --> AP
    LAN Network - 10.10.0.0/16           Wireless Users Network - 10.100.21.0/24
So with a laptop, I can get a DHCP reservation from the WLC to the 10.100.21.0/24 network. From there though, I cannot ping anything in the 10.10.0.0/16 network. I know that I am talking across two different networks so by default they shouldnt be able to communicate, but I feel like I am missing a setting on the WLC that will allow the two networks to communicate.
    Management Interface:
    IP Address: 10.10.20.100
    Netmask: 255.255.0.0
    Gateway: 10.10.0.1
    DHCP Info: 10.10.20.100
Here is the config for my test interface (which may be the problem):
    IP Address: 10.100.21.2
    Netmask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 10.100.21.1
    DHCP Info: 10.10.20.100
Thanks in advance for taking a look.

    Hello George,
Thanks for the reply. I believe I have routes that allow both these networks to talk, currently we are redesigning our network so bear with me as the setup is a little goofy.
The way our devices are connected in terms of the wireless configuration:
    Internet <-> ASA <-> 3750 switch <-> WLC <-> AP <-> Laptop
                                          |
                                      My PC
So, currently our default gateway for our LAN (10.10.0.1) is the inside interface of the ASA (like i said, working on changing this). On the ASA I also have a static route configured so any traffic destined for 10.100.21.0/24 send to 10.10.20.2 which is our 3750 Switch.
On the 3750 switch I set a default gateway for our wireless network of 10.100.21.1. I also configured the trunk from the post above so there is a trunk between the 3750 and the WLC allowing the LAN VLAN and Wireless VLAN to send data across it.
On our WLC I have this configured:
    Management Interface:
    IP Address: 10.10.20.100
    Netmask: 255.255.0.0
    Gateway: 10.10.0.1
    DHCP Info: 10.10.20.100
Here is the config for my test interface (which may be the problem):
    IP Address: 10.100.21.2
    Netmask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 10.100.21.1
    DHCP Info: 10.10.20.100
From my LAN I can ping 10.100.21.1
Our host on the wireless can get an IP, but when it attempts to ping anything (even its gateway) i get no replies.
Going back to your question of if we have routes for both networks to talk, I believe we do, unless I am missing something.
Thanks again for your reply and taking the time to look at this.

  • Network connection very slow, lot of drops

    Hello!
On my network, there's an ADSL modem; an AirPort Extreme is connected to it and all my computers are connected to that AirPort Extreme.
Initially, I had set the AirPort Extreme as a bridge and the modem was in PPPoE. However, I had weird troubles with that setup (one computer couldn't reach another one, not even ping) so I made the other way around: the modem is now in bridge mode and the AirPort Extreme handles the PPPoE connection.
Since then (at least, I guess), downloading from the Internet or simply browsing is a nightmare. Connections would start at a varying low rate (always less than 30 KB/s, sometimes 5 KB/s) and always slow down until the connection drops completely. For small files, I can hope to download a 1 MB file in 40 minutes; for larger ones, it's hopeless.
I've tried to rule out the AirPort Extreme, connecting one computer directly to the modem. I reset the modem (since it's in bridge mode and it's beyond the subnet made from the AirPort Extreme, how can I reach it from my network?) and enter my ISP data. When all the lights on the modem are fine, it tells me some tests failed; I can't connect to the Internet that way. It looks like the modem lost its ability to connect as PPPoE when I defined it as a bridge (?).
I then tried to rule out the modem. I connected my computer and the ADSL line to the AirPort Extreme (which still had the PPPoE settings); the AirPort Extreme would not connect or reach a DNS (what's the purpose of having PPPoE settings if it can't connect to the Internet without even passing by a modem in bridge mode?).
In short, I can't rule out either the modem nor the AirPort Extreme, because they both can't connect to the Internet separately (the modem could before I inverted which device is in bridge mode). After all my attempts, the only way to get Internet back is to set the modem again as a bridge and use the AirPort Extreme for the PPPoE, which makes the whole problem of a very slow connection (even unusable) that I'm trying to repair. I'm lost at that point.
Any help would be really welcome!

    Bob Timmons wrote:
    Two possibilities:
    1) The modem is not working correctly and should be replaced
If that's the case, then I'm feeling guilty, as it worked before I set it as a bridge.
    2) Your log in information has changed due to service provider updates. Contact your provider to verify your account details
It's actually my mother who created that account; I'll ask her further.
    my native language isn't English
    But, your English is excellent.
    Thank you.
Some countries use PPPoA authentication, and not PPPoE.  Although they are similar, if your provider really uses PPPoA credentials, then you cannot log on from your Mac or use the AirPort router to provide the log on authorization, since Apple does not support PPPoA.
Well, I tried using PPPoA recently and it wasn't better. Also, the fact that the AirPort is currently the one making the PPPoE authentication seems to definitively indicate it's not PPPoA (thanks to your information that it wouldn't work in that case).
Generally, my opinion would be that things will work better if you use the modem or a modem/router to provide the connection service and run the AirPort in Bridge Mode.....rather than trying to put the modem in Bridge Mode and use the AirPort to provide the connection service.
Yes, I agree. Actually, I had another problem with the previous setup (AirPort as bridge and modem for PPPoE) where, on my LAN with two computers, only one could reach the other one (the connection worked in one direction only); I couldn't even use file sharing, Remote Desktop or even ping (because, even trying from the working sense, the response would often not come back). In this Apple forum, I got the suggestion to exchange which device was in bridge mode and, indeed, now I can communicate from and to all computers. Since I've realised my connection to the Internet is now mostly broken, I should have been satisfied with the previous problem…
I'm hoping to go back to an Internet connection that works, and not get the first issue of computers not being reachable on the LAN. The big trouble here is that all these behaviours I've experienced are weird (am I outside of the logic with my use of the devices?). I'm also noticing that the first problem sounds to have arrived since I replaced my old router by the AirPort Extreme.
If your modem is 4-5 years old, then that might be another reason to consider replacing it.  Ask your provider what they would recommend.
Wow, mine is actually way older than that! I don't think we've ever changed it since we had an Internet connection (around 1998). At this time, things were not designed to break too soon, right?
Perhaps it had to break with this duration of use, and it just waited that I change settings to break… Doesn't sound a likely scenario, however.
I'm considering trying with my neighbour's modem (with his connection's settings), with the AirPort in bridge mode. If it works, I'll be almost certain the problem is the modem, I'm right?
Thank you very much for your help so far; things are getting clearer!

  • [Solved] connect: Network is unreachable

After 5 unsuccessful Arch Linux installations, I've got two that installed correctly. The first time, the network worked fine, and I was even installing it over SSH. After booting from the installed system instead of the live CD, it can't connect to the network, I get the following message when I try to ping anything, even my router:
    connect: Network is unreachable
I've tried installing Arch again, because nothing on the internet seemed to fix my issue. After installing, I'm getting the same issue.
It appears it's failing to start eth0 because eth0 times out.

What exactly should I look for? It spits out a bunch of info, but I'm not pasting it all here, as I can't copy and paste using SSH and its on a different computer, in a different room.
that command gives you an enumerated list of your network interfaces. You should look to see if you have interface named eth0.

So I can't get networking on a virtual machine (CentOS) running, the parent virtual machine connects propperly and can ping everything OK. The virt has all the correct settings and it's own IP address but can't ping anything, even the host server.
Is there something special I have to do to get it to work?
