X forwarding via ssh not working

hi!
since i've updated to leopard, i have no longer been able to forward X sessions via ssh (ssh -Y $username@$remotehost)
i can login into the remote host, but X forwarding simply doesn't work, i.e. the app never opens. i've tried with vlc mainly.
also i've noticed that if i try starting an app like xclock locally, it doesn't show up.
here's the content of DISPLAY locally
Macintosh:~ asymmetric$ echo $DISPLAY
/tmp/launch-35MU2b/:0
while on the remote machine it's something along the lines of
localhost:12.0
i haven't updated to the "unofficial" xquartz releases, so the openssh version here is OpenSSH_4.7p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7l 28 Sep 2006
any ideas?
thanks
asy

i forgot to mention it, but i'm trying to connect to a GNU/Linux box. Don't know if it's the same for you.
I do have a Linux system at the other end of my ssh -Y connection (RHEL4).
From the RedHat system I see the following information:
% printenv | grep -i ssh
SSH_CLIENT=::ffff:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 60264 22
SSH_TTY=/dev/pts/13
SSH_ASKPASS=/usr/libexec/openssh/gnome-ssh-askpass
SSH_CONNECTION=::ffff:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 60264 ::ffff:yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy 2
% grep X11Forwarding /etc/ssh/sshd_config
X11Forwarding yes
% echo $DISPLAY
localhost:15.0
The following is the Mac OS X info:
% echo $DISPLAY
/tmp/launch-MoVGGO/:0
% grep X11Forwarding /etc/ssh/sshd_config
X11Forwarding yes
% ssh -Y remote.system.address
Make sure you are not setting your own $DISPLAY environment variable.
Do you have a $HOME/.xinitrc ?? If so, how much does it differ from
/usr/X11/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc

  • Port forwarding for SSH not working on WRT54G2

    Hi,
I have forwarded a few ports, but can't get port 22 for SSH to work. I can SSH from within LAN, so that works. And I can access FTP from outside the LAN, when I forwarded that port. But to the same computer where I can access FTP I can't access SSH...
Would be grateful for assistance. Btw, I'm using dynamic IP (through DynDNS, but not using the DynDNS tool in the Linksys interface). I've tried with both the dynDNS domain and the IP address. And I have set a fixed IP address on the server I try to access.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

Make sure that if you are forwarding the port nos for SSH on WRT54G2 you need to forward it for the assinged static ip address & it should work great..just try it once.

  • X11 Forwarding with SSH not working [SOLVED]

I'm trying to follow the X11 forwarding guide on the wiki but to no avail.
I'm using Putty and Xming from a Windows machine to SSH into the ArchLinux machine over my home network.
When I log in through SSH with X11 forwarding enabled, my display variable is set to "localhost:10.0". Running xclock gives me the following error: "Error: Can't open display: localhost:10.0".
I'm pretty sure Xming isn't the problem, since if I manually change the DISPLAY variable to "[my windows machine IP]:0.0", I can run xclock and see it appear.
From what I can see, it should be working.

  • Bug between JRockit and X11 forwarding via ssh

I have encountered what appears to be a bug in the interaction of JRockit with X11 ssh forwarding.
When running any Java GUI application on a remote machine using X11 forwarding via ssh, a variety of problems occur. For example:
    --- cut here ---
    % mitrion-ide
The program '' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter)'.
      (Details: serial 189 error_code 5 request_code 20 minor_code 0)
      (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
--- cut here ---That's the good case. When running the rmmlite application (available at https://rmml.dev.java.net/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?folderID=437&expandFolder=437&folderID=438 ), I experience what appears to be a near-lockup of my local workstation.
Neither of these problems occur if I set my DISPLAY to not use ssh X11 forwarding. Likewise, non-Java applications work just fine with ssh X11 forwarding. Therefore the problem seems to be limited to the Java + ssh X11 forwarding combination.
I have a suitable workaround (i.e. setting the DISPLAY variable to avoid ssh X11 forwarding), but I thought this was worth bringing to BEA's attention. I'd also be curious to know if others have run into similar difficulties.
    Here are the configuration details:

    Brent,
it would be nice to know if this problem is specific to the JRockit JDK or
if you also can reproduce it using the corresponding Sun JDK 1.4.2. Please
do also try with a later version such as latest JRockit JDK 5.0.
    Thanks

I open 1 session of Firefox 5.0.1 and everything seems to work fine. Then I open a second session of Firefox and most of the time the navigation bar does not show the page that I am on and the back and forward buttons do not work. When this happens, the first session always remains working. I am an internet marketer so I have at least 2 or 3 sessions going at any given time.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Ssh via vpn not working in Snow Leopard

On a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard, I want to log into a remote server on my employer's lan via ssh over a vpn connection. The vpn works because I can access a local twiki on that lan with no problem, but I can't run ssh or even ping. This is not a DNS issue because it happens even with explicit numerical IPv4 addresses.
On an older G4 iBook with Tiger, ssh and ping both work. I can run the two laptops side by side with simultaneous VPN connections; and Tiger will succeed, but Snow Leopard fails. Turning off the firewall on the MacBook Pro makes no difference. Could someone please give me an idea of what is going on?
I can't get help from my employer's IT staff because we are a Windows operation and would just as soon switch me over to Windows 7. Thanks.
    Clint

My problem seems to be due to an advanced option in the Snow Leopard VPN preference to "Send all traffic over VPN connection." The domain that I was trying to reach is actually not on my company LAN, but successful ssh'ing to it seems to require that the request to come from a LAN IP address. Without the traffic redirection option, Snow Leopard tries to invoke ssh through my home IP address, which will then time out without making a connection. I think that Tiger automatically redirects traffic to the VPN whenever it is active.
(Note that when setting a VPN preference, it does not go into effect until after leaving the Network preference pane.)

  • [Solved] Remote X over ssh not working

Hello, I'm trying to forward X11 over ssh but it's not working.
    I type
    ssh -X 192.168.1.101
followed by my password, and I log in just fine.
I try to launch an X11 application and I get
    $kate
kate: cannot connect to X server
SSH is supposed to be forwarding a dummy $DISPLAY to allow remote X.  So I type
    $echo $DISPLAY
and and get back a empty newline.
    Well how about
    $xinit
    Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
    and start again.
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
    at http://wiki.x.org
    for help.
    Okay, I'll shut down xserver.
    I do it, and type
    $xinit
again.  KDE launches on my remote box.  It makes sense, but contradicts many guides I have read which say it should launch on my local machine.
What am I doing wrong here?  This should be ridiculously simple.

Did you enable X forwarding in your sshd config?
Did you xhost + (or ssh -Y)?
Did you crop your DISPLAY variable in a bashrc or similar script run at login?

  • Call forward to VM not working

    Hi All;
we have switched from TDM to SIP trunk. after that call forward to voicemail and also automated attendant don't work. then I changed VM pilot number to full number instead of 6000. still when inbound call is received, and called party doesn't answer the call, it is supposed to forward to VM but call is failed. also when somebody calls to main number, it is supposed forward to AA, but call is failed. very appreciate, if there is any suggestion.
    thanks
    Alex

The problem is that Unity sees the forward call as "forward" actually is not a problem is the normal behavior. What we need to do is to Unity see the call as "Direct" configuring Routing Rules resolve the problem

  • Share via Mail not working after Yosemite upgrade

    Hi all,
I recently upgraded from Lion to Yosemite and now I cannot use the Send via Mail option in Pages (or Numbers for that matter).
I searched for this already in another tread but the answer (permission repair) did not work. The Exporting option still works, although it wants to save the file in a strange location, namely LIBRARY - CACHES - CLEANUP AT STARTUP - COM.APPLE.IWORK.PAGES.8572.TEMP.XXXXXXX    instead in DOCUMENTS or DESKTOP.
Any and all advice on this small but annoying inconvenience is welcome :-)
    Thanks
    Ray

Pages '09 v4.3 has lost this capability on Yosemite. Export to desired document format, and then drag/drop into Mail body.

i've installed Flash Player 11.8.800.94 via GPO.
Installation works fine, but there is no flash player available in Firefox or Internet Explorer.
    Deployed both Flash Players.
Tried to reinstall Flash Player 11.8.800.94 for Firefox, but it's still not active.
    Windows 7, 64bit
    Greetings,

    Hello Comvel.
    RE:
    Hello,
    i haven't fixed it yet.
I've deployed the last few version of flash player without any problems.
I haven't found any new things in the admin guide.
The plugins don't show up in both browsers. I can't enable them.
On the most importent clients, i've installed flash player manually.
I know it has been a few months since your post but, I was wonderingif you were able to find a solution for this that didn't involve manual installations. I've recently deployed 11.8.800.175 and am running into the same problems. Some work stations are just fine. But others, (both windows 7 and xp, all IE8) are not working. When navigating to a site like youtube, theres a banner that says update is needed. When you go to manage add-ons there is no shock object/add on.

  • Sync Google Contacts via iTunes not working

    Hi
Just got a new Macbook with Yosemite and am syncing my Google Mail, Calendar, Contacts with the Macbook without difficulty,  I have disabled iCloud syncing for Mail, Calendar, and Contacts.
Now, I want to get Google Contacts set up on my old iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2.1) as a stop gap before getting a new iPhone down the line.  However, I can't find a reliable way of getting my Google Contacts on to the iPhone 3G.
Exchange Sync and CardDAV do not work.  I don't mind syncing via iTunes but I can't set this up either.  Despite telling iTunes to sync 'All Contacts' it won't sync those from my Google account.  Only contacts in 'On My Mac' group sync across, but I don't want to manually keep track of and copy new Google contacts into this group just to sync.
Why won't iTunes sync the Google contacts group - currently it is the only group in my OS X Contacts.
I have reset sync and reinitialised the iPhone to factory image - neither works.
    Any advice appreciated.

    try rebooting the appletv.
also, you have a first generation appletv but have posted in the second generation appletv forum.

  • Vista Ultimate, Firefox 4.01 just installed. The back and forward buttons do not work with this new installation. Help please.

O?S is Vista Ultimate 32 bit fully updated. I have just installed Firefox 4.01. I have lost use of back and forward buttons - they are greyed out. Is there a solution please?

It is possible to have earlier data in a tab if the latest tab had target="_top" that means the back key will not work, but if your right-click on the back/forward you see a context menu. As far as I know the only difference between 3.6 and 4.0 ws that the drop-down arrow was dropped but like before you can still right-click.
There are some extensions that mess with the Back/Forward buttons.
There is a difference between gray and '''black''' on the buttons, '''black''' means there is history in that direction.
You can make Firefox 4.0.1 and Firefox 5.0 look like Firefox 3.6.17, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 look like 3.6)]
