X121e Resolution Error - Linux Mint

I've had my x121e since they came out in UK. Linux on it straight away.
I have Linux Mint 11 on it currently. It runs brilliantly, however...
After being put on suspend during travelling, the resolution changed from the actual 1366x768 to the wrong 1280x800.
Not sure why this has happened, but the options to turn it back are missing. I've tried changing it using xrandr commands in the terminal but they kept failing. I'm currently trying to edit the grub start up config, but am out of my depth.
Strangely, it effects my whole computer. So the Thinkpad boot up screen that all us thinkpad users see also has the same wrong resolution. So this takes me to wonder if it is an issue more general to x121e's and ThinkPads.
Has anyone else had similar problems? Can they help me sort this please?
Good tidings,
Daniel.

Thanks.
It's Intel graphics- Sandybridge.
I'm also running Mint 11 as I had power/heating issues with 12.
This resolution problems just emerged after a suspend. The resolution has been working fine for the last 5 months or so.
Any ideas? Suggestions have dried up a little on the Mint forums. I tried adding a resolution mode using xrandr, and edited the grub inserting vga=844. These didn't work.
Any help is very much appreciated...it's dragging on a bit now.....
Regards.

  • HP LaserJet P1102W - no print output in Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon Desktop

I've just done a default install of Linux Mint 17.1 - as feared, no print output.
I'm guessing I need to install a driver - but I couldn't find anything easily on HP site, only Windows/Mac OS stuff. Are HP printers generally linux friendly? Where can I download drivers if they are? More over, I'm a total linux newbie, so any drivers need to be easily installed! I'm not currently familiar with Terminal windows and line commands!
My printer does have wireless enabled, but I have it connected via direct USB also.
Linux Mint did offer to run a diagnostic tool/debugging tool which gave a great deal of what means nothing to me. Debug output is below if it is helpful, but hoping a simple driver install will cure all ...

  • Video problem with Linux Mint 17 CInnamon on new Z70-80 laptop

I read that Lenovo has pretty good hardware support for Linux, so I bought a Lenovo Z70-80 laptop and installed Mint 17 Cinnamon on it. Mint runs without errors, but the video looks like it is underwater or hot oil. Text is hard to read with whole display fuzzy and jittery. Clearly the video driver loaded has problems. On boot up, the LM logo appears rock-solid, without any problems, but once mdm runs, video looks distorted and jittery. Changing resolutions has no effect on the problem.
Identified video hardware says Intel integrated:
    lspci -nn |grep VGA
VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U Integrated Graphics [8086:1616] (rev 09)
But laptop has NVIDIA GEFORCE sticker on it, so perhaps it is running switchable graphics, or that was the design for Windows 8 that came installed on it. I installed bumblebee and rebooted but that had no effect. /# find ./ *NVIDIA* returned nothing, but if Linux doesn't know about the GEFORCE hardware, I don't know how Nouveau is supposed to be made to work.
I also went into the BIOS Configuration / Graphic Device Setting and changed it from the default [Discrete] to [UMA only] to use only the integrated graphic controller, but that also had no effect on the problem.
Not sure what to do next. Could use some help.
    Thanks,
    Lee

I experienced the same thing.Add "nomodeset xforcevesa" to the grub settings to start linux mint nicely, without the watery/oily jittery screen. So have a look at the following (copy paste in the address line of your brouwser): http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=122257and read the section  after; If you can't boot successfully after installing Linux Mint. When this works (it worked for me) see:http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=140689to make the setting permanent in grub.I changed the line in grub to:GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset xforcevesa"(don't forget the 'sudo update-grub' command) Next steps to take is to get the proper drivers for the Intel graphics card. (Not covered here. Maybe someone can help on this...). Cheers,Ronald

  • Firefox running under Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) 12 (KDE) won't install extensions for Firefox

Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) 12, KDE desktop
    Firefox 10.0
Started up Firefox right after Mint was installed. On the add-ons page video download helper was shown as a featured extension and I installed it, then rebooted when prompted. After that, Firefox would never install another extension again. Just gives download error.
I google searched and in a forum I found a post about uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox. I tried it. First time I started it up, it installed video download helper again, but then would not install any other extension after that. I tried numerous extensions I '''KNOW''' are working in Firefox 10.0 because they are working in Firefox over on my Win 7. Everytime I get a download error, either from the addons site or from the Add-ons Manager in Firefox.
Someone told me on the Mint forums that I needed to add a subdirectory on a certain directory, so I did that. Didn't work.
It seems Ubuntu disables the root, or cripples it, and I guess Mint does too. You can still use sudo when doing things in Ubuntu (and Mint I would assume, since it's based on Ubuntu) but you can't get true 'superuser' access as I understand it. But, I don't think this would have any bearing on the problem, or my search of the Mint forums would have come up with all kinds of threads screaming about this.

Problem solved - it was caused by an add-on called "PDF Download 3.0.0.2)
To fix - in Firefox :
Click on '''Tools''' command (top of screen)
    Select '''Extensions'''
click on "'''disable''' button beside '''PDF Download'''
    Close Firefox and restart it.
Clicking on any pdf file should open a new tab now and the document will appear there.

  • Firmware Update for HP Hotspot Laserjet Pro m1218nfs through Linux Mint

    Hi,
I have tried as many permutations & combinations as possible to fix this, but I am not able to do so.
I run Linux Mint 16 KDE.
I have the latest HPLIP Tool installed & working in my system.
I tried connecting the MFP via USB as well as Wi Fi - printer DOES CONNECT to the system using both methods - I tried Printing the test page, which was succesful.
However, i get the error "No internet connection" when I try to Enable the HP e-Print via the Web interface of the Printer.
The supposed solution for this as I saw across the internet fora, was to upgrade the Printer firmware.
My Printer firmware is dated 20130211. Whereas the latest available is 20130930.
When I went to the drivers download page on HP, I was asked to select my Printer model & the OS.
I selected both & was redirected to the HPLIP site to download the drivers. However, there was no Firmware upgrade tool available.
A bit more researching led me to try the command "hp-firmware" in my Command line box in Linux Mint 16 - this command is meant to upgrade the Printer to the latest firmware.
However, on running the command, I get the error "No devices that support firmware download found".
I tried these things via USB as well as Wi Fi. I tried changing the Preferred DNS too, as mentioned in some other HP Help Topics. I tried turning the HP Hotspot On/Off as well.
To sum up, it seems that I am in a loop. I am not able to use the e-Print function for lack of Firmware upgrade. And I am not able to upgrade the firmware for some totally unkown reasons.
Please someone help me break the loop somewhere, so that I can start using e-Print.

    Hi @Brent0341,
I read your post and see that the printer's display is stuck on a blue screen with the HP logo. I will certainly do my best to help you.
I can send you the correct reset for the printer in a private message.
In the forum beside your handle name just click on the envelope to view it.

Thank You. I look forward to hearing from you.

  • How can I get firefox-9.0b6.tar.bz2 to install in Linux Mint 10 Julia?

When I try to open/load the downloaded new version: firefox-9.0b6.tar.bz2 with the default Archive Manager in Linux Mint 10 Julia I get this error message:
"bzip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly; perhaps it is corrupted? *Possible* reason follows. bzip2: Inappropriate ioctl for device Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout) It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted. You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files. You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover data from undamaged sections of corrupted files. tar: Unexpected EOF in archive tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now"
Perhaps it is also of note that I am running Linux from a thumbdrive through the USB port on my Asus EeePC.
=== What do I do so I can get firefox to work? This began because I can't get Adobe flash and gmail to work properly and realize (at least for gmail) I need to upgrade.

Can you open any other Firefox tar.bz2 archives?

  • How to ensure Firefox stays updated in Linux Mint 17 - Qiana

I happen to have dual OS, Windows OS 7 & Linux Mint 17 (Qiana). I love Linux Mint more than Windows 7. If only I could move away completely from Windows I would be the happiest person on the face of the earth. But unfortunately we're not there yet. e.g. under Windows Firefox tends to update itself, the moment new version is released by Mozilla. But the same doesn't occur with Linux Mint, instead it keeps on listing various error messages.
At present, under Linux Mint I'm using v33, which Linux Mint says is the latest. Whereas v34 is available on Mozilla site. If I've to update FF from 33 to 34, I've download it then either uninstall v33 + install v34 OR install v34 & hope that it overwrites v33 & hope there aren't two versions running on my OS.
Why can't it is capable to renew like in Mac or Windows, where I go to Help/About Firefox/Update (directly from that panel)?
By the time FF v34 is available for update under Linux Mint, there will be another version, which will obviously have more security patches.
One thing I want to clarify, I'm not here to blame any person or group, If I'm able to help I would love to, but this is beyond my expertise, so I'm just trying to raise the issue for the concerned expertise to work towards benefit of all the netizens. If you do have any runaround to this I would really appreciate the feedback. Also this is the first time that I'm voicing my concern, so if I've offended someone, even inadvertently - I apologise.
    Thank you

Linux Mint controls the updates for their version of Firefox that comes with their operating system. It is controlled through their repository.
You could install the Linux - Firefox version that comes from Mozilla directly, to have updates done by Mozilla on the Mozilla schedule.

  • Linux Mint 17, migrated from Win7: Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again.

I get this error message (The messages could not be filtered to folder 'Generic Folder' because writing to folder failed. Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again.) popping up on many, though not all of my incoming filters. I recently migrated from a Windows 7 installation to a Linux Mint 17 system.

I did give it time to run through everything when I initially migrated, and it frequently will sit open for 3 to 4 hours while I'm working on other projects.
The 'Generic Folder' represents sorting folders in my main mail account in Thunderbird. For example, my mail which is listed to filter into my 'Amazon' folder is sorted there with no problem, while any mail designated to be filtered into my 'Games' folder prompts the above error massage.

  • [Solved]High memory usage XFCE 4.10 (vs Linux mint)

    Dear Arch-users,
I recently bought an older laptop with 1 GB ram on it. First I tried Linux Mint combined with xfce 4.8/(10?). It did run fine butt I prefer Arch over Mint so I went back to my old love.
Problem is it uses a lot of memory a lot more than mint and I can't find out were the problem is.
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 941 864 76 7 3 96
    -/+ buffers/cache: 764 176
    Swap: 0 0 0
I did some research on it but I couldn't find any really solutions for my problem, anyone with the same experience? Or someone with a good pointer or better Google-search?
    -Edit-
Forget to mention I have an Nvidia vga with the Nvidia-304xx drivers installed. This card uses shared memory. (The problem might be there?). Its an GeForce Go 6150
    -Edit 2-
I just installed zramswap which brought some relief.
    Mem: 941 846 95 9 3 149
    -/+ buffers/cache: 693 248
    Swap: 188 166 21

That's a lot of memory use. I wonder if there's more than one issue at work here. I don't know if you're aware of the issue with cairo. It seems that nvidia drivers use extra memory when cairo is used with gl enabled.
There are two workarounds that I know if. One is to recompile cairo without gl enabled, probably using ABS. The other, which I've opted for,  is to use one of the appropriate versions of cairo in AUR, such as cairo-nogl or cairo-small. This has saved me more than 100 mb memory. Hope this helps a little.
    I won't ,
Thnx for your quick en very well detailed respond. I will try this when I really need the closed source drivers and hope this answer will help a frustrated Googleling user who will find this topic . For now I will stay on the nouveau drivers.

  • Linux Mint on Z580

    Hi every one,
I need support for installing Linux Mint on a Z580...
I just bought a Lenovo Z580 with following specs:
    Intel® Core™ i7-3632QM (up to 3.2 GHz), Quad-Core
15" HD 16:9 LED Display (glänzend), Webcam
    8 GB RAM, 1 TB disc ,
NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M graphics (2048 MB), HDMI, USB 3.0, WLAN-n, BT
The laptop came with freedos installed on it.I need both Windows7/ Linux on the system as a dual boot system. Linux Mint/ Ubuntu preferred.
I first turned off UEFI boot in order to easily install linux on the system. Windows 7 was my first step: Installed windows from DVD, no problem. Next step: Installing Ubuntu 12.10 for dualboot with the following partition setup (additionally to windows partion): on one logical drive, containing /boot (100MB), /swap (8 GB), / (100GB), and /home (100GB). Grub Loader installed to /boot. Installation without problems, Windows Boot Manager installed for linking to /boot partition. No problem when booting, when selecting Ubuntu in Boot Manager I get into Grub.
However, booting Ubuntu was successful in about 1 out of 4 tries. Just freezing after grub. So, I thought it might be related to Ubuntu issues, and tried out Linux Mint. Same installation routine as for Ubuntu--same result. Just instable and unpredictable, whether booting will freeze or success.
So, next thought was it might be a dual-booting problem. Kicked windows7 out, installed linux mint from the scratch--same result. Sometimes booting, sometimes not. Same for Ubuntu 12.10.
Reinstalled windows again, tested SUSE (a distribution I actually do not like, but for testing) for dual boot. Here it works; coming up with failures in booting (but too quick gone to read), but booting and working properly. But as I said, I do not want SUSE but Linux Mint or Ubuntu.
Last thought I had was the issues with optimus and NVidia. So, turned off optimus in BIOS, reinstalled Linux Mint; same as above.
So my question is: Has anyone succesfully mint working on a z580 with the above specs? And any suggestions for solutions -- I am really desperate at that point!
    Thanks a lot, Jens

    Jens
I have a Z580 that is working with Ubuntu 12.04, but it has one problem that at first I had the same diagnosis as you.
The problem is that with newer linux kernel, it takes about 15 minutes to boot.  At first I also thought it booted randomly because 15 minutes is way past the "give up" point.  Searching the web, I see several others have the problem and it started with kernels after 3.2.0-29 or maybe 3.2.0-30.  I did use kernel 3.2.0-29 for a while and it did not have the problem but opted to suffer the slow boot and use the latest available for my distribution.  Being a laptop that is not necessarily the best workaround for others.
My Z580 is a different configuration (i3) than yours but as I said, I've seen others with the same problem.  If you can get booted, run a terminal and enter "dmesg | less".  Scroll down, watching the times on the left of each line.  Look for a big jump in the times.  Here is example from mine:
    [ 3.690130] usb 3-3: new high-speed USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd
    [ 3.786170] usb 1-1.2: new low-speed USB device number 3 using ehci_hcd

    [ 241.204290] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.
If you see this, you are almost certainly having the same problem.  Later on you will see the "final retry" (or something) before it just goes on to boot:
[ 840.311681] INFO: task swapper/0:1 blocked for more than 120 seconds.

As best as I can tell, everything works perfectly otherwise.  I keep the system on for days at a time and have not had any other problems or crashes. Everything I can think to check about the battery/power management seems to be working (but I almost 100% stay connected to the charger).

  • Xoscope on Arch vs linux mint [SOLVED]

I installed xoscope from AUR (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xoscope/) and the application ran well. From title and PKGBUILD file it is pkgver=2.0, pkgrel=4.  Out of curosity I installed the same program in linux mint also. The deb file installed is named xoscope_2.0-3.1ubuntu2.1_i386.deb and it seems to be actually one release older than the one in Arch AUR.  But it has a different (and better) screen format than the one in Arch (different version, not any screen resolution problem). Is it possible to have the that version installed on Arch. I checked the website of the application (http://xoscope.sourceforge.net/) and the latest available for download is version 2.0 only (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/xosc … pe-2.0.tgz). I checked in some posts regarding installing deb files in Arch and it does not seem to be a good idea. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for a clear explanation.  I read other posts regarding making a PKGBUILD to install deb files and also checked PKGBUILD files of some packages in AUR.  Will following modification of xoscope PKGBUILD work to make a pacman-installable package from the deb file of xoscope?

    Hi everyone ,
the hp-algin tool can't go to the end on my Linux Mint 14.1 with printer HP 3420.
it stops at the step asking me the E1 - E11 best alignment : i click on the next button and nothing happens.
the terminal told me what's follow :

on Launchpad, another user report it: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/841084. We can see bug exist since HPLIP 3.12.2..
I try on windows XP(with drivers on CD with printer) and all work fine. Small note, page printing for alignment on windows is completely different from the printed page on linux. I use HPLIP 3.13.11
Problem of HPLIP? or Python version?
this printer is really good and I need to make this alignment. With the alignment carried out (under the windows where I was able to complete the transaction) it prints perfectly ..
I hope to find a solution or by contacting an HP support

  • W520, Linux Mint, and nvidia card?

I'm on a W520 with a Quadro 1000m nvidia video card, running Linux Mint 17 xfce (64-bit) Recentley, I came across a situation that required OpenGL 3.3. Best I can tell, my onboard intel card cannot support above 3.1! So I went to try and get the nvidia card working. Quick note for anyone at this point... Apparentley installing the propietary drivers directley from nvidia is the worst thing to do. I went to install the bumblbee drivers (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee) and have ever since been frusterated by a non working nvidia card. I've gone to the bumblebee chat, scourd the web for my issue, tried to re-install on a fresh USB.. Nothing works. Has ANYBODY else been in this situation? What were the steps you took to get a functional nvidia card? Heres an info dump of my issues. Why are you trying to install bumblebee ? The optimus stuff is horribly designed and it's a headache in the long run. As others have suggested, use the discrete option and use either nvidia's proprietary drivers or use nouveau. Installing nvidia drivers from their site is a bad idea. Nvidia says so clearly on its website. You need to get the nvidia drivers packaged by ubuntu. You should do the following: 1) Remove the nvidia drivers that you installed manually. This could help. http://askubuntu.com/questions/206283/how-can-i-uninstall-a-nvidia-driver-completely . Make sure that nouveau isn't blacklisted. 2) Switch to the discrete option in the bios. Disable optimus detection as well in the bios.  3) Your laptop should boot normally if nouveau isn't blacklisted. 4) If you have a working system after steps 1-3 , it's not too broken. The only thing that remains is installing nvidia's propreitary drivers if you choose to. The easiest way would be to open jockey (Additional drivers) and select the nvidia driver.

    Hello hallefrompa,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article provides an answer to your question:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1202
iPod shuffle and iPhone are intended for use with a single computer. You cannot load music from multiple computers or iTunes libraries onto iPod shuffle and iPhone like you can with other devices.
You'll need to setup your iPod to sync to this new iTunes library:

    Thanks,
    Matt M.
