X48C Freezing in OS boot & install

See System specs in profile.
Given all that i have tried installing vista business and xp pro sp1a  32-bit os' several times to no avail (except once when xp installed but continually failed to boot after os selection screen)
I tried installing vista with only 2GB in (with and without dddr2/3 selector) per recommendation and that made no difference as vista would freeze almost every time after the progress bar finished (once the windows setup files were loaded and the mouse popped up). Same result with both 1 or 2 sticks installed. A few times i made it to the cd key screen however (2 sticks in).
Vista's memtest ran for 3 passes with no problems detected in the memory and Checkdisk reported no problems on the disks.
Overclocking and underclocking the ram and processor proved fruitless as well, though i am not good at this so i am not sure if i executed the trials correctly; raising the voltages yielded no difference.
Raid array is intact and seems to be functioning perfectly.
DDR3 timings are suggested by patriot to be 9-9-9-24 at 1.5v and with those entered it fails to post. I do not know the correct values for the other 5 settings as i cannot find any literature on them (tTRD, TWR, etc). It posts fine with auto settings and 1.5v selected for DDR voltage, but no change in freezing habits.
Anyone got any suggestions on how to resolve these freezes and/or how to get one of these two OS's to install? (or any clarifications on things i may have forgot to report!)
Thanks for the help!!

great advice!
I relaxed the timings i did not have the knowlege for, and set the main timings to 9-9-9-24 while upping the voltage to 1.6v and raising the NB by 0.15v. Eventually it posted and everythings been running well since.
This seems to work and so far xp pro sp1a has installed and is running fine.
i didnt do a full memtest run as it seemed to be running fine. Might do that later.
Onto vista next, but as i have one OS installed, the next should be much easier.
Thanks for all the help!

  • Intermittent freezes upon cold boot

    Greetings gurus,
I've been experiencing intermittent freezes on cold boot since a few weeks. I did not have them on 10.5.4. I've only had 4 freezes and according to the CrashReporter log all are identical, as far as I can tell. I have not installed any new hardware and I have only one external thing connected and that's a Sennheiser USB headset. I'm unable to tell if all leave identical messages in other logs however.
The *CrashReporter log* for the four occasions says that the process which broke is *coreservicesd [43]*. On each occasion, it is said that "Thread 0" crashed. This is how the beginning of that log reads (from the crash earlier today):
    *Process: coreservicesd [43]*
    *Path: /System/Library/CoreServices/coreservicesd*
    *Identifier: coreservicesd*
    *Version: ??? (???)*
    *Code Type: X86 (Native)*
    *Parent Process: launchd [1]*
    *Date/Time: 2009-01-19 20:33:26.618 +0100*
    *OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.5 (9F33)*
    *Report Version: 6*
    *Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)*
    *Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000*
    *Crashed Thread: 0*
    The symptoms are:
+ *Menu bar* is invisible (can make out language flag, airport and bluetooth icons and bottom of menu bar).
+ Finder is unresponsive (can't open folders on the desktop and their icons are gone but not their names - relaunching the Finder does not help).
+ Applications won't launch from the Dock.
+ I can access the Restart, Sleep, Shutdown dialog box by pressing the off button on my ACD, but the Shutdown button doesn't work.
+ Holding the power button will not always force shutdown, but seems to put the computer in some sort of sleep mode (when pressing the button again the desktop will appear "greyed" out and a white progress bar will display).
As it doesn't happen upon every cold boot I haven't been able to use the Verbose mode. I have done the following:
+ Trashed the plists of Finder and Dock
    + Fixed permissions in DU
+ Left it unplugged from the mains for a whole day
    + Reset PRAM/NVRAM
+ Using Onyx, deleted the caches under Cleaning - System and Cleaning - User (radical perhaps?)
+ Turned off all login items (AppTrap, Gmail Notifr, Fuzzy Clock, Skype)
+ Run Apple Hardware Test, normal and extended, with no errors found
+ Verified boot disk in DU while booted from the installation disk: no errors
I tried a Safe Boot but it froze. However, it does not freeze every time.
When it froze this evening, I found loads of the following message in Console-All Messages:
*WindowServer[51] LaunchServices/5123589: coreservicesd is running an unsupported version, 0 ( we are 10500000 ), so we cannot talk to it.*
Many of them are prefaced by loginwindow[23] instead of WindowsServer.
Below are the messages in Console-Console messages from the latest time that it froze (all of the messages). There's some talk about com.apple.UserEventAgent-Aqua which I don't understand.
When it says that a "thread" crashes, could it be hardware-related (i.e. the processors)? But should not AHT have caught that? Or is it some corruption in the system? I have backups and clones so I'm not worried about losing data. I'm more concerned about the hardware.
Any thoughts and ideas would be helpful.

Actually, doing the following would probably fix everything; at least it has fixed every issue I have ever had.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install may also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
     Luck! DALE
p.s. by Thomas Bryant '''' from a previous post.
Diskwarrior is a "must have" utility and it's corrected any weird problem I've ever encountered. Anytime I have to do a forced shutdown etc. I run DW to get the directories back in tip top shape. Directory problems cause strange issues and often over the course of several weeks or months the little problems add up to finally a major problem. Tom

  • Bootcamp 'Glowing' windows logo freeze after gfx driver install

Bootcamp 'Glowing' windows logo freeze after gfx driver install
Last week suddenly, after having changed or installed nothing, trying to boot into windows resulted in a frozen glowy window logo 'Starting Windows', which resulted in having to format the windows partition.
Since then I've found out that I can do everything except install gfx drivers.
I've installed firefox, all bootcamp drivers except gfx, swtor (doesn't run of course, but installs fine), quicktime, rebooting is fine after all this...
But as soon as I install any kind of graphics driver and reboot, it freezes at the glowy window logo.
    I have tried;
    The bootcamp included gfx driver
    Windows Update included gfx driver
    Official nVidia latest beta driver
    Official nVidia latest whql driver
    Official nVidia oldest whql driver
    nVidia Cuda driver, both versions
    All give the same result
I have formatted the entire harddrive and written zeros and made the windows partition in a physically different location to make sure it's not a harddrive issue, no luck.
I have tried both Windows 7 x86 and x64 with matching drivers, same results.
Tried booting with no devices attached, no luck.
This all seems to me like a bust gfx card, were it not that under Lion everything works fine, even gaming (WoW).
Techtool Pro's test machine shows no errors.
    My machine is a;
    iMac
    24-inch, Early 2008
Processor  3,06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Geheugen  4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

I am running Lion on a Mac Mini Server wherein I placed a Bootcamp partition and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. I've been testing Windows Media Center using a CableCard Tuner installed in a SiliconDust HomeRun box.
All was well until I received a Windows notification of an NVIDIA driver update. After the update, I now freeze at the same point that you do in the Windows startup splash screen.
I rolled back the driver using the Windows control panel associated with the device. Still freezes.
Windows repair does not have a fix. I can't get windows to start in "safe mode" so I can remove the additional apps that NVIDIA installed during the update.
I'm certain the freeze is associated with the NVIDIA driver.

  • Thought I had it fixed, by iMac is still freezing sometimes on boot up

In an earlier post, I thought we had my iMac fixed but now it's still freezing up on boot up, occasionally.
Sometimes I'll just get a grey screen with no logo after the boot up chime, sometimes it'll take a good minute or two for my iMac to fully boot up, and sometimes it'll boot just fine.
Usually, when I get just the grey screen I have to use the Command-Control-Power button to reset the Mac just to boot.
Any ideas as to why? I've repaired the hard disk after the first time this happened and it found no errors.
I read my console log and there's nothing glaring out that looks like a massive error.
I have been getting the following errors, could they be the problem?
BootCacheControl: could not stop cache/fetch history: Cannot allocate memory
vmnet: Hub 1 does not exist, allocating memory.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As a follow up to this.
I booted from CD and ran disk utility. I repaired the disk and said everything was A-ok. I tried to repair disk permissions and it the progress bar froze a 1/3rd of the way in saying "1 minute remaining" and never moved after that.
    ideas?

  • Can't boot install disk from usb drive

I bought a macbook pro back in late 2007 and up until now im getting ready to sell it. So now while restoring to factory settings, i wiped off the hard drive and i need to reinstall my install discs which i still have. However, the cd drive doenst work on the laptop. It hasnt worked since i can remember. I already imaged the instal disk into a usb flash drive and tried booting from there. When i turn it on and hold "option," it reads the flash drive as a backup, but it wont boot from it. I click the flash drive, and it loads, but then the apple logo gets replaced by a "no symbol."
I have a new macbook pro, but not a firewire cable or an external cd/dvd drive. Anyone know how i can get the old laptop to boot from the usb?
BTW, the install cd's are for tiger, but i installed snow leopard when it came out. Im not sure if i still have the cd for snow leopard, but i dont think that would help since the cd drive doenst work. Do i need to buy an external cd drive to reinstall my operating system?

    chonke wrote:

Well that's your problem you used Tiger and the firmware was changed to prevent booting from the older operating system once you upgraded to Snow Leopard.
You will need a copy of the Snow Leopard disks, the white one's online at Apple will work
Then you need to follow this to make a 10.6 install USB
    http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html
Here are the instructions to install Snow Leopard, I advise zero erasing the entire drive first, this will clear any bad sectors and make the install work perfectly when you sell it and not get call back (although the cd drive is dead of course)
You might be able to extract the free iLife off the Tiger disks, then Software Update fully to bring it up to date using Pacifist from CharlesSoft.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
BTW, you can't boot/install off a external optical, only internal.

  • I would like to do a full restore from time machine but have lost my boot/install disk.

    Hi,
Recently had my HDD replaced (with fresh OS installed) and even though I have everything backed up on time machine am struggling to complete a full restore.
After reading time machine help understand I need to mac os install/boot disk to get to the time machine full restore utlility.
I cannot find my install disk. Can I create one from my current mac?
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

The install disk cannot be created.  If you call Apple (1-800-MYAPPLE) they should be able to order you a new set of disks specifically for your computer.
I found this old answer talking about what the disks are:
If you bought your computer new, you may be able to contact Apple about buying a replacement boot/install disc#1 for your specific computer. If a disc is lost or damaged, they have been known to be able to help. Not sure if a call to Sales Support would be the direction to take on this; but it would make more sense to ask them about the replacement.
The disc #1 and #2 that come with the machine will (or more, if it has a CD packet and the OS is not on a DVD) restore the computer to how it was new. If you upgrade to an all new OSX version and wanted to add the original applications (instead of buying new ones; not always a good idea if the leap was a great one from original OS to the last version) you could use the disc #2 to add applications to a system. It has installers, & won't boot.

I have a new Canvio 1TB Ext HD HDTC710XK3A1. My desktop computer will freeze up during boot up if the Canvio is plugged into USB port. Unplugged the computer will boot up OK. I have also tried this on my laptop and the problem also occurs. If I plug in the Canvio after computers are up and running the computers work OK untill the next boot up so I have to disconnect after I shut down the computer. Any fix for this problem so I can leave the Canvio plugged in all of the time?

  • OS-X boot/install DVD

I know this is an old question, but I want to make an OS-X Lion boot/install DVD.
I have the Recovery disk assistant, but this program does not 'see' my DVD.
Is the best option to download from the appstore again?

The Lion Recovery Assistant just creates a Recovery HD on an external drive such as a USB external drive or thumb drive. I don't believe it will create a DVD.
So, to get the installer file you would need to re-download it from the App Store and capture it after the download and before you continue with the install. Here's a link with instructions in case you don't them.

  • Windows 7 Freezes at Restart After Installing Boot Camp Drivers

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro and am having troubles installing 32-Bit Windows 7. All seems to be functional until I install the Boot Camp drivers included on the Install Disk. I have tried using the Boot Camp 3.1 update, but the same problem occurs. After the computer freezes on the install page, I can no longer access Windows (even in Safe Mode) and am forced to restart the entire process (that is, repartition the hard drive and reinstall Windows).
If I don't install the Boot Camp drivers, Windows seems to be functional, so I'm pretty sure it's something in the Boot Camp package causing the trouble.
Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas or workarounds?

I finally got it to work. You need to go to the NVidia website and install their drivers. I think the Apple supplied ones are out of date and are causing Windows to hang. Install Boot Camp from the supplied DVD, install the update that Apple supplies through the newly installed Boot Camp, and then go to the NVidia website to manually download the drivers. I used the GeForce 300M series installer. Make sure you do all of this before letting Windows restart.
I had a few issues with it hanging a few times, but once I was able to get into Windows it seems to be working. All of the other Apple supplied drivers seem to work.

  • Yosemite cannot boot (Freezes) even with Clean Install

Macbook Pro 15" was normal in the normal, but I updated Samsung Kies and it told me the restart, after that I cannot boot up Yosemite 10.10.2 at all
    What I've done:
    1. I can access Target Mode with my iMac, copied my files with no problem. I used my imac to verify both MBP HDD and Bootcamp and even try repairing, it showed that there was no fault at MBP in the first place.
    2. I can enter Safe Mode, I tried updating the OSX to 10.10.3 and still does not work
    3. Bootcamp windows got bluescreen, removed it still doesn't help.
    4. I tried install a Clean Install, and still doesn't work, (Installed through SD Card)
    5. It seems now I can only do ie., continue my update, continue my new install through safe mode ONLY
I never turned on Filevault in the first place.
At this point I'm not so sure, if I can still access through Target Mode, hopefully it should mean that my hard disk isn't broken.
I am out of ideas... please help
Ps. at normal Start up from the progress bar sometimes the screen stutters and showed me a pixelated screen and then switched back to the progress bar after a minute the loading circle appears and the looping appeared overlapped and thickens

  • I have a mainboard X48C freeze problem

Hi I'm new to the forum, sorry to jump on the band wagon but I have the same problem which has only just started, since I bought a Q9550 (previously had a E660) and instead of starting a new post (can if you want) thought I would ask for some help here.
    I have the following system:
    Windows 7 x64 Enterprise
    Q9550 CPU
    1x ATI HD4870 1Gb GPU
    MSI X48c mobo (2x 120 case fans)
    2x (4Gb total) Corsair CM3X2G1333C9 DDR3 RAM
    Noctua CPU heatsink
    2x WD2500KS SATA HDD (RAID 0)
    1x 1Tb SATA WD Green
    1x SATA CD/DVD burner
    OCZ 600w (OCZGSX600) PSU
Tsunami Dream case (2x 120mm fans)
USB ports in roof of case (standard fitting)
With the E6600 all was good in the land. Slightly OC from 2.4GHz to 2.8Ghz but nothing to set the world on fire. System was very stable. Introduce the Q9550, cleared all CMOS Windows is ok(ish) but when gaming I have random PC freezes, black screen for a few secs then it comes back to life. Occationally the PC will reboot it's self too. All drivers are up to date, latest BIOS, just reinstalled Windows 7 x64 and the problem is still occurring (in fact I had a 7e error whilst installing Windows...) Graphics card has been tested on a friends rig and no problems there.
Even setting the CPU and RAM volts manually hasn't resolved the problem. In fact it appears the RAM needs more volts than it is guaranteed to run at; they state 1.5 but this BSOD during windows install, 1.63 and I was able to reinstall Windows fine but after a few mins of gaming the PC froze again. I havent waited for a full blown auto-reboot again. I have set the CPU to 1.3v. Memtests have not produced any errors. I monitor with RealTemps and nothing is getting too hot.
Furthermore I seem to now often get the problem of the PC not booting at all. Power on, fans start and continuously spin fast, I know when it will boot as the GPU fan slows down. PSU underpowered maybe..? I dunno
I am interested in the fact that advice was given to remove the Switch Cards... I was under the impression they had to be installed? What benefit will this bring? I have also thought my PSU might not be up to the job but I have had conflicting responses there.
After having a scan around the forum here it appears I may need to lower my RAM settings?
    Taken from datasheet:
 Tested and packaged in pairs
 Packaged together immediately following system
    test
SPD settings of: 7-7-7-20 at 1066MHz
     Guaranteed at:
Timings of 9-9-9-24 values at 1333MHz
Would you advise to lower to 1066? Will try when I get home (was so hoping to get the most out of them!)
    Regards,
    Spanky

Thanks for the reply and peeling my post off Mike, sorry I didn't start my own initially.
Well @ 1333Mhz I was using the rated timings 9-9-9-24 (as per Corsair) but it wasn't very stable as I said.
I have since changed the FSB/RAM ratio to get 1066Mhz and it seemed much happier. (@1.5v) It would be nice to run the RAM at it's rated setting but my OC skills aren't that extensive. I imagine it would need alot of tweeking? Or could I have just relaxed the timings a bit?
Would removing the Switch Cards make any difference?
    Thanks in advance.

I added "nouveau" to the modules in mkinitcpio (and ran mkinitcpio -p linux). This has got me to where I am now.
I also noticed my dmesg has the line:
Cannot add dependency job for unit display-manager.service
I would be happy to post the rest of the dmesg if needed.
I went through the nouveau wiki but did not have any success.
I found this post which is similar. I must be missing what they did.

Awebb, I will be happy to do this and post results.
I am dual booting on a MacBookPro4,1 with GRUB.
I am not sure what you mean by efi method but based on tutorial I followed (more of a guideline really) I am booting directly from my Macbooks EFI bootloader.
I uninstalled mesa, nvidia, and nouveau drivers and installed the proprietary driver nvidia-340xx which is designated to be used with my graphics card (GeForce 8600M GT).
    Here is my grub config:
    GRUB_DEFAULT=0
    GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Arch"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="rootflags=data=writeback"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

Finally, here is my dmesg. I noticed the line "module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel" but I have read in other posts that this is common and can be ignored. I also receive a lof of USB device descriptor errors but I am not sure if they are related.

  • Blackberry Torch 9800 Freeze and Re-boot random times

    Hi everyone,
I have recently had a few application upgrades and since this my phone will at random freeze and then re-boot, which takes an age, especially when you need to make a call !
I have tried a backup then a security wipe and did not re-install the applications but alas it is still doing it.
Could this be the software ?
There is no option to downgrade in the menu to try the previous software edition.
Any help will be very welcome. Steve

one of the guys here had a random reboot issue and it was the battery causing it.
he didnt mention freezing, but if it was an app.
On device go to Options, Device, Application Management is a great way to see what your apps are doing with your CPU usage on Smartphone. Just slide top bar to CPU and see what is going on. Also touch the CPU menu to see other time variables. I found out that an app was eating away CPU cycles on mine
Disable Compression on media card? go to Options, Device, Storage
using a custom theme? try it for a day the factory default one to rule out your theme
remember the esc key closes most apps, except for GPS and some chat clients. the other apps need to use menu and then exit or close. The farthest key to the right is a home key and does not close any apps per se but will end calls.
