XCode iPhone Apps Won't Compile (or do much of anything really)

Ok so I've got the iPhone SDK installed and I'm just running through the iPhone Dev Center's little starter page, figured I'd start things off by running the MoveMe application. But no dice... I try to compile and XCode just sits there, usually with the progress stuck somewhere between 0% and 25%. No error messages, no status messages, nothin.
Well fine, so I try the Hello World sample project. Same story.
I try to compile a trusty old non-iPhone app. No problems here.
So I uninstall XCode and reinstall w/ the iPhone SDK. Same story, same situation.
I try moving files, making fresh projects, adding garbage code to the main function, but still absolutely nothing changes. I can compile just fine (and it will appropriately complain when I have garbage code in) but if I try to BUILD it just sits there.
An image of my frustration here... this is exactly what I see when I try to compile. And nothing MOVES.
Anyone have any insight into this? I'm still pretty green at XCode, so I'm not even sure where to start looking.

I also have the same issues. I've tried running the sample projects from the iphone developer site with no luck (tried with an ipod touch, with the simulator and no luck in either case :/)
What I have noticed is that it initially hangs on copying one of the assets (a png file in hello world). If I stop it and then try to build after, it hangs on trying to compile the xib file.

  • AIR app won't compile with custom icons

My AIr app won't compile when I choose anything but the
default icons. I created 4 pngs in Photoshop and it gives me the
    error: Useage error (incorrect arguments)
Any help? I've tried using only 1 icon, all 4, and no icons.
    Only no icons works.

You dont have to use the GUI to set it, you can use the air
    appliation XML.
inside your air-app.xml file look for something like:
    <icon>
    <image128x128>icons/myIcon128.png</image128x128>
    <image48x48>icons/myIcon48.png</image48x48>
    <image32x32>icons/myIcon32.png</image32x32>
    <image16x16>icons/myIcon16.png</image16x16>
    </icon>
if its not there add it, but replace the myIcon128.png with
your 128 point png image etc.
also the above assumes your icons are in a folder called
"icons" in the same directory as your air file.
    Hope it helps.

  • IPhone apps won't update, iTunes Store won't open

I can't figure out why my apps won't update on my iPhone. I have rebooted, deleted the apps that wouldn't update and froze (waiting) and rebooted after that. I may not have the greatest wifi connection ... I am out of town and dependent on hotel/convention center wifi. Went to App Store to reload the deleted apps (some), but same thing.  I saw a response regarding iTunes, went there...took forever for iTunes to open, it kept stating I couldn't access iTunes Store, and after hitting "okay" probably 4 times to confirm that iTunes wouldn't open...it did.  So I thought that was the problem and returned back to App Store and tried to reload just one app.  Well it's been an hour and a half or more, can't reload it. It creeps along and I thought the app was loaded, but no. I can reboot only, not reset because I am no in home like I said. This is more than "fairly frustrating". What the heck can I do?

Do a hard reset by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button and home button together until apple logo appears.

  • Iphone apps won't open!

My iphone apps are not working after a recent update. The apps show up on phone but when I try to open the app the screen goes black and returns to the main screen. help!!

    This fixed it:
    I FIGURED IT OUT !
There's something going on with the latest version of iTunee.
This affects people with old and new version of firmware for iPhone 3G.
What happens... All your apps stop working because they are no longer authorized for use, after a syncing with iTunes.
The fix... Before doing a sync with iPhone, deselect all the applications. Sync (in effect, you're removing all applications from your iPhone). In iTunes, click Store / Authorize Computer, and enter your password. Don't worry, you won't use up any of your 5 alloted activations. Go back to applications and reselect all your applications. Sync. You're done and EVERYTHING WORKS !
I figured this out when i tried the delete / restore technique mentioned before. iTunes gave me a message saying my computer was not authorized to restore the applications. Huh? So in fact it's iTunes causing the headaches.

  • My iPhone Apps won't open.  They just "blink" when I click on them.  Why?

What can I do to correct this?  Thanks for the help!

I tried turning it off & on twice and that didn't work, but your suggestion to upload another app did it!   Thanks VERY much!  You just saved me a trip to the Apple store and a wasted hour!  Thanks!

  • IPhone Apps won't sync to iTunes.

I need all my apps to sync to my iTunes for a complete backup. All the new apps I've purchased on my phone in the last few months do not show up on the apps tab in iTunes. I've hit the Sync button as well as Transfer Purchases. Each time the apps are said to be "copying" in iTunes but never actually transfer or appear in the apps tab. They're in the preview on the right, just not in the list on the left.
Sync Apps is checked, as well as Automatically Sync New Apps
I had the same trouble with the iPhone 3GS and had to re-download all my purchased apps when I upgraded to iPhone 4 because the backup I used to startup the 4 seemed to be incomplete.
It's as if iTunes won't update the backup file. It's stuck on a backup from a year or so ago.
    Any ideas?

I'm also having this issue. There is no media folder with any apps files in my iTunes folder on my PC and so i can see all the apps in my library but they are all gray and have a "!" next to the app name because iTunes (nor myself) can't locate them.

  • Got replacement iPhone - apps won't transfer

My old iPhone broke so I sent it away to be fixed. They send me a new one with a new IMEI and Serial Number. I transfered all the apps but some apps that I paid for won't work sending me to App Store to buy the full version. I autorized the computer but still unable to transfer the app and I don't have the old phone to 'transfer purchases' from the old one to iTunes and then to my new iPhone. Also, when I go into App stores and updates it is divided into two - all and not on this phone.
    Please help.
    Thank you,
    A.

I guess if you re-buy the ones you paid for iTunes will recognize that you already paid for them and let you download them for free.

  • FB 4.7 app won't compile

I recently overlayed the AIR 4.0 SDK on FB 4.7 and updated the playerglobal.swc file tp the 12.0 version.  I did not uninstall/reinstall the AIR runtime (don't think that makes a difference).  I also updated the ns on my -app.xml file to 4.0
When I try to compile the app and debug, I get this Launch error:
    Process terminated unexpectedly.
    error while loading initial content
    Launch command details:  "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4.7 (64 Bit)\sdks\4.6.0\bin\adl.exe" -runtime "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4.7 (64 Bit)\sdks\4.6.0\runtimes\air\win" -profile mobileDevice -screensize 540x922:540x960 -XscreenDPI 275 -XversionPlatform AND "C:\Users\Mark\Desktop\Flash builder test\DistrictVoice2\bin-debug\DistrictVoice2-app.xml" "C:\Users\Mark\Desktop\Flash builder test\DistrictVoice2\bin-debug"
Anything I may have missed in the SDK overlay process?

I've resolved my issue though I'm not sure exactly what its root cause was.  I am now running FB 4.7 with the AIR 14.0 SDK

  • IPhone Apps Won't Organize

So, my ability to organize apps in iTunes has suddenly ceased to exist. I spent way too long organizing 11 pages by category and then ease-of-reach; hit apply and walked away to get ready to go out while it was backing up/syncing. When I came back a few minutes later, the phone was miraculously DONE... but all the apps were back how they were before I organized them. This is the THIRD TIME it's happened, which means I've (ironically) lost about 3.5 hours (in total) trying to make my iPhone more efficient. I can't figure out why it would let me organize before -- and now I'm suddenly unable. Any thoughts??

Did you try to use less than 11 pages, maybe some apps don't fit and the sync process is canceled because of that.

  • My iphone apps won't open and I did try go on my App and it won't also open....

I can't open any apps on my iphone just normal text....even I can't go to my App and try 'Update'...

Charge it for 15 minutes with the wall adapter. Then hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons until an Apple ID appears. See: What to do if your iPhone or iPad will not turn on

  • What happens when the iphone app won't open on iphone 4?

what happens when the phone does not open and automatically shuts down the phone?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • IPhone Apps how to get them back?

So say your hard drive melts down and you have to start fresh, and you dont have a backup of your iphone apps (which takes way too many hours with anything over 10 apps) How would you go about retrieving all the apps you have already purchased without having to re-buy them all? Or say you just want to buy a new machine.

Get an external hard drive and back up your internal hard drive. If your hdd melts down you'll lose a lot more than iPhone apps!
If you have already downloaded an app and buy it again (as long as you are using the same iTunes Store account) you are prompted that you have already purchased the app, and you can download it again for free.

  • Trying to create first iPhone app, use Interface Builder or Xcode first?

I'm trying to create my first iPhone App, do I start with Interface Builder or Xcode first? And how do I link the two together?

It's not really that simple -- you'll be working with both. Interface Builder is used to design the GUI (graphical user interface, which consists of the windows and buttons and text fields and so forth, the parts of the application that your user interacts with). Xcode, on the other hand, is used to write the code that tells that GUI what it's supposed to do, and how to do it. So, to answer your question as best I can -- generally, I would imagine you would want to start by creating the basic form of your GUI in Interface Builder and then start coding where appropriate in Xcode, then you'll move back and forth between the two (Xcode and Interface Builder) as needed.
If you're new to programming and want to start with iPhone apps, I recommend picking up a book on the topic (Apress publishing has a book called "Beginning iPhone 3 Development: Exploring the iPhone SDK" that is a good one, and don't forget to take advantage of Apple's iOS Dev Center, which has lots of good documentation on most any topic that will be helpful in supplementing the information in the book you buy -- click [here|http://developer.apple.com/iphone/index.action] to go there).
Keep in mind, however, that trying to learn to program iPhone apps will be difficult (to say the least) if you don't already know Objective-C, and the Apress book I recommended above will not be easy to follow without understanding Objective-C first. Objective-C an object-oriented extension of C, and it is the programming language that is used to develop iOS apps (apps for the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad). I would definitely recommend learning Objective-C on the Mac before jumping in to iPhone development in specific. Apress has another book called "Learn Objective-C on the Mac" that I would recommend for this.
Furthermore, since Objective-C is an extension of C, you won't have an easy time learning it without a prior understanding of the C programming language. Again, Apress has a book for this, called "Learn C on the Mac."
Put simply, learning to program for the iPhone is not something that comes overnight -- it's a step-by-step process that takes patience, and you have to be willing to go through these steps if you want to learn to program properly for the iPhone.
Step 1 -- learn the C programming language
Step 2 -- learn the Objective-C programming language
Step 3 -- apply your knowledge to developing for iOS (iPhone's operating system) with the Cocoa Touch framework
Anyways, that's just my advice -- I definitely recommend taking the time to do it right and not jumping straight into the deep end, but in the end only you know what works best for you. Also, like I said, I definitely think investing in a book on the subject is worth the time and money, so let me know if you want any other recommendations for books beyond the ones listed above.
Hope this was helpful to you, and best of luck with your journey toward programming for iOS.
