XDCam to ProRes utility?

Has one been invented yet? I need it badly. My FCP just hates any MPEG2 footage. It's a crash-fest. And a utility that does this would save me a step and the time of transcoding to ProRes after importing the XDCam.
Thanks if anybody has advice. Google didn't turn anything up. The Sony Log and Transfer plugin software doesn't work. Not sure why. It seems to have been made for FCP 6 and Tiger/Leopard. And I found a lot of articles that suggest a transcode after re-wrap to QT. That's what I'm doing now, but it seems like a waste of time.

Hey Jim
Yes, I expect David probably just misinterpreted what it is you were asking. Neither XDCAM Transfer, nor XDCAM Browser nor the FCP Log and Transfer plugin (for XDCAM EX) will allow you to transcode to ProRes as part of the import process, they all do a rewrap only ie they maintain the video in its XDCAM camera native encoding and simply place that "essence" in a Quicktime wrapper so that it's directly readable by FCP.
ProxyMill is the only app I've seen that is purported to transcode XDCAM HD files directly to ProRes as part of the ingest process ... I've never used it so can't attest to the fact from personal experience. I'd encourage you to download the demo and see if it works as you need it to.

  • Which is better: XDCAM or ProRes for editing and upload?

I am trying to determine if I'm better of staying with my native XDCAM files or instead converting them to one of the Pro Res codecs? One of my main issues is that the files that I upload to YouTube never look as good as I feel they ought to, nor as good as other HD files that I've seen online.

Well, neither would be good to upload. YouTube wants H.264.
Both look good. ProRes is easier on the system, smoother to edit, but has larger file sizes. XDCAM native isn't bad to work with, it just can take longer to do final rendering...depending on the system you are using to edit.
Both will convert to H.264 and look good.

  • XDCam HD/Prores/DigiBeta and my head hurts!

I have been doing research and have drawn some of my own conclusions but some input from those more experienced than myself would be gratefully received.
I have a interview shot on XD Cam Disc 1080/25p winging its way to me, usually we Shoot in Digi Beta and HDV is the only HD format we have had the pleasure?!? of using thus far.
I will be hiring a XDCam reader (probably D1) so I can transfer the files.
Q1/ Do I/Can I transcode straight to Prores using Log and Transfer or do I have to do this using Compressor afterwards?
Q2/ Is it worth transcoding to Prores as this is a stand alone interview and shouldn't need to be mixed with any other footage?
Q3/ We are going to have the situation more and more where crews say "sorry no Digibeta" or "that'll cost you more". I can see my HD footage coming to be in all flavors (but hopefully 1080/25p).
Due to this I see Prores as our most likely way forward as quite often the different footage will be put into one program.
I was looking at getting a AJA io and then hiring decks depending on what the footage is shot on and go directly to Prores that way. But I understand that you might be stuck with 29.97 frame rate when playing into the AJA through HDMi?
Opinions on best workflow going forwards would be gratefully received, my head hurts.
    Thanks
    John E

    Hey John
XDCAM HD is a fully supported FCP native camera codec, no need to fear it at all ... if you like you can edit it directly in to a ProRes timeline and get full quality realtime previews, or you can edit it native and set rendering to ProRes for faster results with better potential quality if doing a lot of effects work, or you can just edit and render native ... its all very easy and has been since around FCP 5.1.2. When you've locked edit you can export as Uncompressed, ProRes or whatever other delivery codec you prefer (including XDCAM HD although that would be an odd choice).
I will be hiring a XDCam reader (probably D1) so I can transfer the files.
Not a good idea as the D1 is SD only I think ... get a U1 if you can, or rent a player "deck" like the PDW-F30 or better.
Q1/ Do I/Can I transcode straight to Prores using Log and Transfer or do I have to do this using Compressor afterwards?
No need whatsoever to do it all (see above). But if you did want to do it anyway then you would have to do it post import ... no direct to ProRes transcode on ingest with XDCAM HD (XDCAM EX yes, XDCAM HD no).
Q2/ Is it worth transcoding to Prores as this is a stand alone interview and shouldn't need to be mixed with any other footage?
Not worth it at all unless your goal is to hoover up disc space and man hours unnecessarily.
Q3/ We are going to have the situation more and more where crews say "sorry no Digibeta" or "that'll cost you more". I can see my HD footage coming to be in all flavors (but hopefully 1080/25p).
Due to this I see Prores as our most likely way forward ...
ProRes as intermediate is fine. As for hiring decks, if you are imagining your future needs then you should really be assuming tapeless ingest/workflows rather than anything tape based, that said an AJA Io HD (not AJA Io) would be a great device to have on hand as would Matrox MXO2 and other I/O devices ... and no, I think you have misinterpreted that frame rate restriction, its not the case at all.
    Hope it helps

  • Converting mixed HDV/XDCam to ProRes?

    1.  If I have HDV and XDCam EX on the same HDV timeline ... and do a Media Manager conversion to transform both codecs to create a new timeline that is all ProRes 422 ... will the XDCam be converted from XDCam or from HDV (given it is on an HDV timeline??)
This may seem like a dumb question.  I'm not sure whether the media manager takes it cue from the actual orginal media, or from the sequence settings of the timeline?
    2.  The HDV is 1080i and the XDCam is 1080p.  I need the ProRes 422 to be 1080i ... there is a predominance of HDV in the movie, and it is headed for television anyhow.  Do I have to worry about the XDCam being converted from progressive to interlaced in some way?
    All ears,
    Ben

    Thank you Shane,
Both are the same frame rates.  First thing I checked.  Even though I cut my teeth in film, and still shoot as if I have film in the camera, and though I'll use 24fps if I know it's going to end up in a theatre, I have to confess I've often found 29.97 fps smoother ... and it still looks like film to me (despite the noise of the naysayers) as long as the lighting and the use of the lens is cinematic.
Seems like I'm always 'still' learning when it comes to digital processes though... which is made easier by you...
    Much appreciated,
    Ben

  • Working with Sony XDCam,  FCP 7 and a Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme

I started a project about a year ago shooting with a Sony EX3 and imported all of my footage as XDCam EX 1080 30p mostly using Sony's XDCam transfer software but I also imported some shots using Log and Transfer.
The current sequence settings are XDCam EX 1080 30p.
I recently purchased a new Mac Pro and installed Final Cut Studio 3. I've read that the XDCam transfer software is buggy with Snow Leopard but all of my footage is already imported so that isn't my current issue.
Yesterday I hooked up my external monitor to my Blackmagic card to preview the project and I could only see the last frame played on the external. I called Blackmagic and since my card is discontinued the only information I could get is that it doesn't support XDCam. For some reason I have never tried to preview XDCam footage on my external monitor so this was a bit surprising. I switched the compressor for the sequence to ProRes HQ and I can watch everything fine on my external until something needs to be rendered. Most of the footage has the "Full Render" green bar at the top of the sequence but plays fine but I do have effects and animations that need to be rendered. Once I render a clip it goes black in the timeline.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I transcode my footage to ProRes? What would be the best way to go about that? I noticed Log and Transfer doesn't work with XDCam in FCP7.

I tried converting a clip from XDCam to ProRes using Quicktime 7 and brought it into my ProRes sequence and it was black when played in the timeline. It does play fine on my external monitor when played in the Viewer window.

  • How to write original XDCAM-HD clips to HDV on tape?

A customer of mine wants his high-definition clip, recorded in XDCAM-HD delivered on an HDV-tape.
In FCP, I cannot do this directly. Does anyone know a way around to write XDCAM (or Prores-) clips to HDV tape?

Tried that, and it won't work
Then it seems you must of done something wrong along the way Luc because the solution provided by James M is absolutely correct ... but hey, your workaround is much appreciated too. Whatever works right? Thanks for posting back with it!

  • XDcam setting in L & T

I downloaded the XDCAM pluggin for log and transfer a while ago. I was able to capture all my footage, but only nativly, and this setting does not show in L & T preferences. I need this feature to capture in Pro Res. Have I installed wrong and if so how do I uninstall?
    Jeff

Personally I haven't used XDCAM except for a couple of instances so I don't have the depth of knowledge that others here on the forum have. Having said that, I have done a lot of reading on the topic. If I remember correctly, to transcode XDCAM to ProRes it must be done through Media Manager as an additional step. You can choose to re-compress all the footage in your project. This is often done before editing.
I understand what you mean by changing the codec in the L&T preference menu but as you have found out it's not available there to change the ingestion codec. If you search the forum you will find more detailed posts on the re-compress process.
    I hope this helps!

  • I Need Suggestions On Capturing, Timeline Settings and Final Rendering

Okay folks, this is me confused!  I've been editing videos for the past two years and that isn't saying much as I've only trained myself through trial and error and reading manuals.  I simply pretend that I know what I am talking about:)  I have purchased the 5D Mark II and have FCP7.  I think I'm doing okay, but I know there must be a better way of doing things and need help in doing so.
I film 1920x1080 30fps.  I capture my footage with the default settings on the EOS disc that comes with the camera (works great), then I run my footage through MPEG Streamclip and convert them to XDCAM HD 30.  From there I allow FCP to auto set the timeline to match the footage and then I edit away.  So far so good and I'm really not complaining.  However, since I have been making things up as I go along for so long, I have several missing pieces to my understanding of best quality film.  I've been trying to figure out the use of ProRes codecs.  My limited understanding (what I've heard and read) is that ProRes provides some of the highest quality.  So my question is, should I then scratch the XDCAM codec conversion and go straight to ProRes, then edit ProRes and then final render as such?  I'm confused because there are people that have said that you should edit in a lesser format and then render in the higher quality of ProRes since ProRes takes up more space on the hard drive (bigger files), yet, when I read official info on ProRes, the claim is that the files are small.  So there is confusion number one.  Then, confusion two, is if I edit in XDCAM or ProRes, what then?  Meaning, is it best to send to compressor upon rendering or do I send it to QT or QT Conversion and then send that file to Compressor, or do I leave it at that and send to DVDSP?  I know this is elementary, but all the conversations that I have found seem to be based on the understanding that I should already know this.  So, I'm embarrased to say, I don't know, "this".
I have however, taken an edited a XDCAM timeline and then changed the Render Setting to ProRes and sent it to QT or QT Conversion (I can't remember which one sorry).  The video had some text at the very end, and it looked incredibly jagged (no bueno).  So I know that I was assuming or doing something wrong, and my "trial and error" has run its course as I have nearly run out of time.  Therefore, I call upon the Discussion Board for help.
    To sum up my questions:
    1.  Should I convert to ProRes to begin with instead of XDCAM?
    2.  Do I edit in ProRes and what should I make the settings for the Sequence (or should I allow FCP to auto select based on video files settings)?
    3.  What next?  Do I send that sequence to QT, QT Conversion or to Compressor?  If QT or QT Conversion, should I send it to Compressor after that?
    4.  What should I have my settings be over all on my Sequence?
I hope I'm not too annoying with my questions, and any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    Crayton

    1. Yes, absolutely.  By immediately converting to a long gop format you are throwing away TONS of information.
    2. Auto-select.  By all means match clip and sequence settings
    3. You haven't said what your deliverable is, so can't advise you how to export.
    4. See #2.
Pro-rez will be larger files than what you are getting from the camera.   Get used to it, drives are cheap.

  • Latest on Lion and Final Cut Studio?

On the road.  Lots of rendering required.  Heard a rumour that FCP 7 runs very smoothly on Lion OsX, and rendering speed is improved?  I wonder if that's real?  And would like to hear if FCP 7 is actually running smootly on Lion now.  I want to upgrade, but am in the middle of grinding out a number of jobs ... but there is no end in sight anyhow, and I just noticed I hadn't even upgraded this particular laptop to Snow Leopard before departing.  And want to use a new app that only runs on Snow Leopard and above...
    All ears,
    Ben

    Thank you David,
    I'll hold off a bit.
I may be on the road for a bit.  I'm finding myself with too much rendering to do ... working in XDCam or ProRes, but having to do a lot of animating stills, titles, modest effects with Motion.
Might be the time to upgrade to a new MacBook Pro.  I know this is another question, but have you heard how much more effective a solid state drive would be in working with FCP/Motion (speedy renders, smoother playback)?

  • " is missing - FCP can't see file name to reconnect it

I have moved a large amount of files assuming I could easily reconnect using media manager. It now says " is missing and seems unable to see that I have 100s of named files to import. The only solution I have is going through each file one by one and manually locating it.
Anyone know this issue and a fix?!

Yes, do a search in this forum and you will find a few threads about it.
As far as I know there's no solution yet.
Can you give us more detail about your setup (version FCP etc) and the kind of Files you are using? (XDCam, DV, Prores, etc)
Maybe we can find a common denominator which causes this problem.
It also might be helpfull if you exactly did with those files.
for exemple: Was FCP running while you moved them?
Was the disk disconnected while you opened this project? etc
    Please be accurate.
Also send your problem as detailed as possible to apple feedback. Follow this link: [FCP Feedback Page|http://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html]

  • MacPro 3.1 with GTX285 freezes during playback- too slow?

I´m having issues with my MacPro 3.1 (2008, 10GB RAM, GTX 285 card) and FCPX which always freezes only during playback.
I can edit the whole day without any freezing as long as I do not play back the edit for longer than 1 minute. After about 1.15 of continuos playback the computer will freeze for 45 seconds. The audio keeps playing though but the video will freeze and I cant do anything on the computer. Then video comes back for another minute before it will freeze again. So I can never see the whole edit...
When working with Adobe Premiere CS6 or any other program I do not have the slightest issues and the MacPro is working fine the whole day. I only have this issue with FCPX (10.0.6 and 10.0.7)
I have tried the following so far:
    - trashed preferences
    - re-installed FCPX
    - clean install of the OS (10.8.2) on a fresh HD with fresh install of FCPX (no other programs on the system)
    - changed RAM
    - Hardware Test with no issues showing
    - dropped in my old GT8800 graphic card which seems to be too slow but does not show any real freezes only choppy video playback
    - Cuda driver installed and Cuda uninstalled
Could it be that my system is too slow for FCPX? Could the 285 cause the freezing? Does anybody else have this kind of issues? I have to use Premiere Pro CS6 with Cuda for most of my projects, but for quick edits I would love to use FCPX with this machine. What can I do? Any ideas what could be wrong with my system? Any feedback would be highly appreciated.

    Tom,
thanks a lot for taking the time to reply. Now I´m even more puzzled knowing that it should work fine on my machine.
I also got the impression that the GTX285 should handle FCPX without any issues and it does on my machine until it freezes. Its quite snappy during editing and can play quite a few effects that need rendering in real time. Strange thing also is that I do not get a dropped frame warning after the freeze.
    Regarding your questions:
    1) I tried all kind of formats ranging from DV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50, XDCAM and ProRes. Even tried transcoding and proxy. No matter what format I bring in, the freezing will occur
    2) tried transcoding and the original file formats
    3) Cuda drivers are up to date. I also tried various older drivers and not installing Cuda at all. Same result all the time unfortunately.
I no longer know what I should do... I´m already thinking about buying a ATI 5770 but I´m also using Premiere a lot which works great with the Cuda cards and I do not want to invest into this old machine - still hoping that a new MacPro will arrive eventually later  this year...
    Thanks,
    Gerald

  • Recommend workflow for progressive HD footage

I have to edit down some footage shot on XDCAM EX 1080p30. The end result will be PAL SD on DVCAM. I have the workflow for getting to PAL SD using Compressor, but I am wondering where the best place to go from progressive to interlaced is. My instinct tells me to leave it to the very last stage when I output the video to tape via a DV timeline. I am converting the XDCAM to ProRes in the first instance and staying in ProRes to PAL SD.

that's what I'd do. Compressor works just fine for the conversions to PAL

  • Easy Setup and Audio Video Settings (FCP7)

    Hello,
I am a newbie editor in fcp 7. in fact, I´m newbie on pos production. I´ve been working and editing less than a year (Premiere Pro)
Now I am using FCP7 (and FCPX) but my question is...in fcp7, why do I need Audio/Video Settings and Easy Setup if
final cut has open format sequences?
    thx

Well, strictly speaking on FCP 7 and earlier (since this particular forum is for older FCP...not FCX)...yes, you do.  You need to choose the Easy Setup that matches the footage you are using.  If you have multiple formats, try to convert the footage to a single format.  Don't belive this Apple marketting about "open format sequences."
There are some exceptions...like you can have ProRes footage, and a ProRes sequence...and also edit in HDV or XDCAM footage in that. IN fact, it's best to edit HDV and XDCAM as ProRes.  Don't have an XDCAM sequence setting and edit ProRes into that...XDCAM is inferior to ProRes.
Also...don't edit may formats natively.  Meaning H.264, MP4, AVCHD...there are many formats that FCP just doesn't work with properly. FCX will even ask to "optimize" the media...meaning convert to ProRes.  FCP 7 is a different beast than Adobe Premiere Pro. PPro will allow you to edit formats natively...it's designed to do that. FCP 7 is not....and that's a pretty important difference to know. FCP 7 wants media to be in FCP editing codecs before you start...such as ProRes.
