Xen HVM Domain crashing

Hello,
I am using Oracle VM 3.0.2 and I seem to be unable to get a Xen HVM Domain to boot after installation from an ISO image. I am able to create Xen HVM domain and install Oracle Linux 5.7 64bit from an ISO with no problem. However when the machine reboots as part of the installation process or from a fresh start after installation the virtual machine stops. The only events in the event log are the Starting, Running and Stopped events. Below are sections from xend.log, the qemu-dem and the vm.cfg file.

I am having this SAME PROBLEM, I think.
I just installed Oracle VM 3.0.3, and everything seems fine. I created my first VM, using an OEL 5.7 to create an HVM. The installation works fine, but the UEK kernel will NOT boot after the install. The 2.6.18 kernel boots just fine, however. If I try to boot the UEK kernel, it fails to find any volume group at all. I can't guess what the problem is. Here's my grub.conf, if that matters:
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file

  • Xen HVM PV drivers Oracle Enterprise 6

    Hi,
We have just started working with Oracle vm.
The first virtual machines have been created as Xen HVM PV drivers.
We have used Oracle Enterprise 6 update 3 as os.
And now we want to install the pv drivers.
But these pv drivers and kernel cannot be found n the public yum repository for Oracle Enterprise 6 update 3.
Where can we get the kernel and pv drivers ?
    Greets,
    Jasper.

The PV drivers should be native. No need to load then. I believe they have been incorporated in most Xen kernels since 2.6.32.x I don't see why OEL 6 would be any different.... but I am not 100 percent sure if the OEL kernel fork has them or not. I don't see why they wouldn't.
Keep in mind that when running Oracle products on Oracle VM guests.... you must use PVM guests to get support. I haven't check all the requirements of every app but I know several that require PVM guests. RAC is only supported on PVM.

    Any idea ???

About the load it is just an observation
Other observation the virtual machine that reboots have is ram full.
It did not work before, it is like this since we installed the virtual machine
We did not change any hardware
    The history of the problem:
    1st day
We have oracle virtual server 2.2.1 running on a HP Proliant DL 380 G7
We have a (virtual machine) server under windows 2008 R2 (A17). We installed this machine in the last position
    2nd day
We noticed we were not able to contact the different machine via the network
We checked the log and noticed an error NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed and something else related to bnx2 driver
after some research under support of oracle we found something like this [ID 1312709.1] where the problem were supposed to be solved in oracle virtual server 2.2.2 or using an another kernel and when disabling option C-STATE in the BIOS C6 and C3.
were drivers related to NIC were updated. We installed this new kernel but the problem were now related to the windows server 2008 R2 machine.
Actually this machine reboot and the nic where the machine is cannot be contacted after the machine reboot
i mean if A17 on xenbr1(eth1) reboots ping on eth1 does not respond but still able to ping A15 and A16 on xenbr0(eth0)
    and the nic is:
    Lspci grep ethernet
Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5709 Gigabit Ethernet
    ethtool -i eth1
    driver: bnx2
    version: 2.0.8-rh
    firmware-version: bc 5.2.3 NCSI 2.0.6
    bus-info: 0000:33:00.1
    end of the story
the problem sems to happen when users launch batch application which execute batch sql statement (midday or 5 pm). twice or once a day.
    Any idea ?!!
    thanks

  • Sound over HDMI problems

    Hi forum,
I have strange problem. I want to use a Xen HVM Domain with a ATI Card as a HTPC (got this working with a ubuntu 11.10 - want to migrate to arch). Basically everything is working with the catalyst drivers besides some sound problems. Following what is working:
    with smplayer (alsa output):
    - mp3, avi, mkv
vlc (with default sound - probably pulseaudio):
    - mp3, avi
mkv is like stuttering and the movie gets interruped very often.
    vlc (with alsa output):
    - mp3, avi, mkv
mkv is like stuttering and the movie gets interruped very often.
Flash videos are showing the same behaviour - stuttering a lot.

    What i tried:
    .asoundrc:
    pcm.!default {
    type plug slave.pcm {
type hw card 0 device 3
This worked on ubuntu 11.10 but not on arch!
btw: ubuntu 12.04 does not work neither.
in default.pa i load the alsa sink module with hw:0,3 too.
    behavior did not change.
any ideas, what is causing the problem? I really dont wont to switch to gentoo just to have a system without pulse (what is maybe the problem?).
    Ben

    Hi,
I have some news. With Kernel 3.3 and 3.2 it is not working! Using the LTS Kernel everything is fine! Any Ideas about this?

  • Weblogic em and console crashes in Forms 11gR2 domain

    Hi,
I am working towards an APEX and/or Forms11gR2 environment from Forms and Reports 6i.
Coming from a client-server background, with the concept of application servers etc totally unfamiliar territory.
and a near-zero knowledge of Java its been a tough few weeks, but I have managed to install a test 11gR2 Windows 32 Oracle Database win 7,
Weblogic 10_3_5 Admin server and a managed server on Windows Server 2008 32 bit 4GB memory, install and deploy
APEX and the APEX Listener and also install Forms and Reports 11gR2 using a separate domain as required by the installer.
The Weblogic Admin server and its managed server are stable and i can access and administer them no problem from a browser
    with em and console.
My problem is with the domain created by Forms and Reports for deployment. I can login to the console and em of
that domain but whenever I click on a link inside, the domain crashes with a "fatal error detected by the Java Runtime environment".
    The Domain name is FormsDomain.
As I need to start the WLS_FORM and WLS_REPORT in the Forms Domain through the console, I am stuck.
Can anyone help,I have pasted the output form the created log file:
    # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
    # java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: requested 131080 bytes for Chunk::new. Out of swap space?

    Hi,
    a hint anyone?
The domains I created with JDeveloper work without any problems and are totally stable,
while the one created through Oracle Forms just crashes all the time when accessed through the console
    or em.
Is there any difference between these domains?
They all use jdk160_24 and the Forms Domain crashes even when running alone, so it can't be lack of
    physical memory, I would think..
I would have created a domain through JDeveloper and extend it, but extending a domain is only possible if
the domain is created with Forms, so I am well and truly stuck here.
    Regards
    Leckraj

    What I did
I dumped the dependency requirements from the xen source tarball's readme.
I downloaded the AUR for xen-4.4.1 (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xen/) and have added some dependencies
All the requirements but the UUID were in standard packages and UUID was in AUR.
I am a newbie and the last coding I did was in COBOL so I am not doing so great any suggestions on what I am doing or did wrong would be greatly appreciated

well, it's been a lil while since you asked, but hmm building 4.6 unstable (editing the pkgbuild) worked swell.
except /etc/default.xendomains is missing so you will have to hack around a bit to get the vm's autostarted.

  • Do we have a different Guest Addition Drivers for HVM, PVM or PVHVM ?

Do we have a different Guest Addition Drivers for HVM, PVM or PVHVM ?
As while installation of of Guest Addition on HVM uek3 I got below error :
Domain Type for VM: "Xen HVM, PV Drivers" does not equal VM Tools Alive Event guestType: "HVM"
Can anyone please suggest me with this issue ?

    Hi,
To add more to Budy's answer:
Pure HVM machines do not and can't use paravitualized drivers. This is because they have completely emulated devices (by qemu) and dom0 does not create backend devices for it. You can only use native drivers inside HVM machine. Qemu emulates only simple, popular devices: for example IDE controller for disks and Realtek or Intel card as network devices. As a result you can install almost every OS inside HVM machine. Disadvantage is that I/O is emulated so performance is very poor. Practically you don't use pure HVM machines at all because of it.
PVHVM and PVM machines are using backend and frontend Xen drivers for I/O and some other features. Operating system inside domU have to have fontend Xen drivers installed. This is always true for linux kernel which has these included as well as Solaris 10/11 x86. Windows does not have them and therefore one needs to install them separately.
As for "Guest Additions". I think you refer to:
Chapter 3 Oracle VM Guest Additions
This is something different. I doesn't provide disk or network I/O. It enables additional communication channel between domU OS and dom0. It is used by Oracle VM Manager (via its agent0 to pass configuration settings to domU. You can use it for example to automate OS configuration after you create VM from template. Also this might be use to obtain performance metrics from guest OS by Oracle VM Manager. This feature is actually not necessary at all to run your guests efficiently.
Try to change your machine to PVHVM and check if error is gone. There is no point to use HVM for Oracle Linux anyway.

    Michal

  • WebLogic Server 8.1 SP2 - Sudden Crash

    Hello,
We have WebLogic 8.1 SP2 installed on Unix box (SunOS 5.8 Generic_108528-29 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-880). We have configured 2 domains on the same box, one for development and other for staging environment. Both are running normally fine.
Couple of days back the managed server of development domain crashed sudenly. It generated a CORE file and a log file with following details:
Can anyone tell me, what exactly happened, and what would be the corrective / preventive action to be taken?

WLS 8.1SP2 can not be upgraded directly to WLS8.1 SP6.
The existing domain should be at WLS 8.1 SP4 atleast so that it can be upgraded to WLS 8.1 SP6.
    The link:
    http://commerce.bea.com/
Has be decommissioned and now in order to download the upgrade installers and WLS service pack versions you should have a Support ID which is required to create a login to metalink.oracle.com .
Then You can follow the following:
    Login to: https://Metalink.oracle.com
Go to tab: Patches & Updates
Quick Links to: Latest Patchsets, Mini Packs and Maintenance Packs
Patch Bundles for Individual Products or Components
    Select BEA Weblogic Platform
Select the WebLogic Main version and SP version
Then you should see the download screen.

  • OVM-4602 HVM is not supported in the server pool

    Hi,
I'm trying to create a Windows 2008 R2 HVM guest and have come across this error:
"OVM-4602 HVM is not supported in the server pool"
Hardware is a HP BL25p G2 with AMD-V enabled in the BIOS. This is 1 of 5 similar servers in the server pool - all 5 servers have AMD-V anbled in BIOS. I checked the following:
    xm info | grep xen_caps:
    xen-3.0-x86_64 xen-3.0-x86_32p hvm-3.0-x86_32 hvm-3.0-x86_32p hvm-3.0-x86_64
xm dmesg | grep -i hvm:
    (XEN) HVM: SVM enabled
    cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep svm:
svm is not listed in the flags
I'm creating the guest from VM Manager using an iso file. I haven't tried using virt install yet as I would like to get some opinions here first.
    Thanks in advance.

I know 3 of them were enabled after installation of OVM due to an oversight but can't vouch for the other 2 servers (these 2 were the first servers installed with OVM, including the master server).Remove and re-add them back to the pool. Oracle VM only stores the hvm-capable flag when it adds the server initially. It doesn't re-evaluate this later.

  • Solaris10 Update 10 (08/11)  No Disks Found error vm3.0.1

I have successfully installed Sol11 Exprress and Oracle Linux 6.1 in VM 3.0.1 using ISO method.
My setup includes iSCSI devices and a HA config.
However, everything I’ve tried with the newly released Solaris 10 R10 (08/11) it fails to finish installing with a No hard disks found error and the install aborts.
I’ve tried Xen HVM and HVM PV Drives Domain types with same results.
Has anybody been able to install this release of Solaris in OracleVM 3.0.1?
    Edited by: user10052240 on 22-Sep-2011 9:47 PM

Still no luck, I get through the installation until it asks about CDROM media, then I get a pop up window with the "No Disks found" eror, after that the install exists to xterm window.
Here's my vm.cfg in this instance I did not change xvd to hd as all my attempts to change this cause vm not to boot.
    -thanks for any advise.

  • OEL 5.7 UEK will NOT boot on OVM 3.0.3

I just installed Oracle VM 3.0.3, and everything seems fine. I created my first VM, using an OEL 5.7 to create an HVM.
The installation seemed okay, but the UEK kernel will NOT boot after the install. The 2.6.18 kernel boots just fine, however. If I try to boot the UEK kernel, it fails to find any volume group at all. Any ideas what's wrong? Surely, this isn't supposed to happen.
Here's my grub.conf, if that matters:

    Terry Phelps wrote:
The installation seemed okay, but the UEK kernel will NOT boot after the install. Yes, this is a known issue. Oracle Linux 5 uses the Red Hat compatible kernel during the installation, but boots into the UEK. The RHEL kernel uses the emulated drivers as it is not Xen aware, while the UEK is a paravirt_ops kernel. However, once it sees the Xen drivers, it crashes because it has no Xen drivers in the initrd built by the installer.
This is a known Oracle Linux HVM guest issue: http://oss.oracle.com/ol5/docs/RELEASE-NOTES-U7-en.html#known_issues
It's also one of the reasons why I recommend installing Oracle Linux as a PVM guest (not just for all the performance benefits you get from PVM).
So, to boot OL5U7, you pass xen_emul_unplug=never on the kernel boot line, which allows the machine to boot with the emulated devices, i.e. they are not unplugged.
Then, edit /etc/modprobe.conf to replace the emulated devices with xen-netfront and xen-blkfront:
    alias eth0 xen-netfront
    alias scsi_hostadapter xen-blkfrontThen, rebuild initrd:
    # mkinitrd -f -v --builtin=ehci-hcd --builtin=ohci-hcd --builtin=uhci-hcd /boot/initrd-`uname -r`.img `uname -r`And reboot. You may get kudzu renaming ifcfg-eth0 to ifcfg-eth0.bak on reboot, because it detects "new" hardware. If so, just rename it back and it should be fine.

It is just saying the previous shutdown was unexpected.  If you BSOD we need the DMP file if not event viewer logs to diagnose it.
We do need the actual DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
We prefer at least 2 DMP files to spot trends and confirm the cause.
Please follow our instructions for finding and uploading the files we need to help you fix your computer. They can be found here
If you have any questions about the procedure please ask
Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
    Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
    Expand Custom Views
    Click Administrative Events
    Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to Onedrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post
If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem.  The
work around is to edit the registry.  If you are not comfortable doing this DONT.  If you are, backup the key before you do
    Press Win+"R" and input regedit
    Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels. Delete "Microsoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic"

  • VM 3.2.3 Problem attaching virtual disks

    OVM Server:      3.2.3-521
    OVM Manager: 3.2.3-521
Guest machine: Oracle Solaris 10 x86.
As per documentation, on guest machine can be attached 4 IDE disks and 7 SCSI disks. Using VM manager I can’t attach more than 4 virtual disks to this machine. Also Oracle Solaris has built-in PV drivers, so in this case up to 52 disks can be attached.
How to attach more than 4 virtual disks to the guest machine?
    Regards,
    Kosta

    Thanks, for your responce.
Guest machine is created as domain type: XEN HVM, PV Drivers.
    Regards,
    Kosta
