Oracle vm guest disk count limitation

Hello!
Recently I've deployed oracle virtual server (3.2.2), and have a task for virtual machine creation with solaris 10 x86 installed and 5+ physical disks attached to the system from various SAN storages. Xen HVM domain type has a limitation of 4 disks attachable, so I've changed domain type for Xen HVM, PV drivers on the cloned machine, but I'm unable to apply 5 disks attached configuration to this vm with following error:

  • EXS' Sampler Instrument Count Limitation

    Hello everyone,
Does anyone happen to know of a workaround/ solution to EXS' sampler instrument count limitation? I find myself constantly shuffling instruments and libraries in and out of the Sampler Instruments folder, a process which, given my 1TB library, is tedious and extremely time consuming.
Any "magic fixes" or insights would be highly appreciated..
    Thanks!

    Some clarifications:
I have been running EXS Manager, Pro Ed from the get-go.
Once again, my complaint is NOT regarding slow load times (which, believe me, is grounds for a whole separate post); rather the inability to access instruments altogether. In other words: past a certain, specific instrument down the list, others would simply no longer load. They are visible in the EXS menu, but are flat out "ignored" by the sampler.
Additionally, I have tried re arranging them using sub-folders, but to no avail: The Sampler Instruments folder seems to only be able to handle so many instruments.
    Anyone else..?

  • Oracle 10g increase disk space

    Hi all,
I am very new with oracle and can not find an answer to this question:
Is it possible to increase the disk space after installation, e.g. by configuring of an additional disk?
    (If yes, in what way)
    The scenario is:
After some time after our Oracle installation the disk wiil be full and we wiil need to increase the disk space without to lose the existing data.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Pita

    Hi,
first of all - thanks a lot for your help and new questions :)
-- You can add a datafile to the existing tablespace keeping the new datafile to the location where there is enough space.
What is about the old datafile (old data), can I keep two data files assingded to the single tablespace?
-- 1)You can use 3rd party tools like Acronis Disk Director Suite to increase the drive space without formatting
2)You can have new drive and you can move your datafiles to that new drive.
I don't want to copy the existing data to the new drive.
Is it possible to configure an additional drive for the same tablespace
    Best regards,

How does oracle use voting disk? How does it do health check and arbitrates cluster ownership among the instances in case of network failures?
Why it must have an odd number ?

Did they mentioned anywhere, that there should be odd number of voting disks? (it is just multiplexing).

  • Oracle VM Guest Performance as HVM

    All,
I was hoping to get clarification on this:
I happen to have a server with a processor that supports virtual machine in hardware (AMD-V). I have installed a couple of 64-bit OEL5u4 VMs off of the install iso (not from eDelivery templates, but from eDelivery iso). My guess is that these guests think they are using the hardware directly, which, as I undertand gets to be finally handled by qemu-dm in Dom0. Is this an efficient way of doing things with these OEL versions, or should I consider altering the guests so that they can communicate with Dom0 in a more efficient manner? The Oracle web site offers rpms for the guests, but seem to be targetted at OEL5 Update 1. Maybe these improvements are built in OELu4?
FWIW, I ran "hdparm -tT /dev/sda" on the host, and "hdparm -tT /dev/hda" in the guest, and the buffered read performance is worse in the VM by a factor of 5. The way I configured it, hda in the guest maps to a Logical Volume block device on the host, so I was hoping to get much better performance.
    Any input welcome.

FWIW, I pursued this by reading the Oracle Server manual again, as well as what I could find from RHEL5. Again, this is trying to configure a guest with paravirtual drivers when the guest is run in full hardware virtualization, in order to retain as much disk performance as possible.
The short of it is that if the vm.vfg file makes use of "xvda" instead of "hda", then OEL5.4 uses the disk in a much more efficient manner (meaning it does a hypercall from DomU to Dom0, so Dum0 stops using the slower emulation in Dom0).
In my case, I chose to map the DomU hard disk to a Logical Volume in Dom0:
    disk = [
    'phy:/dev/DomUDisk2/LVOracleApp,xvda,w',
In this case, running "hdparm -tT :/dev/DomUDisk2/LVOracleApp" in Dom0 yields to near identical results to running "hdparm -tT /dec/xvda" in DomU. I used to have a loss of a factor 5 with emulation.
If anybody has to retrace my steps and try to replicate this, there are guides out there that mention installing missing paravirtual driver modules in the guest by downloading some rpm. Starting at OEL5.4, they are already there (/lib/modules/2.6.18-164.el5/kernel/drivers/xenpv_hvm/), so no extra rpms are required.
There is one caveat: Booting from xvda using the paravirtual drivers is somewhat less than automatic. Contrary to what you can read, grub does not seem to have a problem locating the kernel and initial ram disk. So, after grub does its thing and gives control to the kernel, the init script in the ram disk tries and locate the root file system. It then scans and finds the hard disk as hda (emulation), eventually mounts it, and runs init off of the disk. This new init has the paravirtual drivers from the hard disk, and finds the SAME DISK as xvda. This cannot be good, although it works and does not seem to thrash the file system as one would think. In order to prevent this from happening, there are a couple of changes to do in the grub configuration file /boot/grub/grub.cfg). The idea is to prevent the kernel from scanning for IDE disks:
    kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.el5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet hda=noprobe ide0=noprobe
Now, once this is done, we have prevented the kernel from finding the root file system, and this VM is unbootable! The problem is that the initial ram drive does not have the paravirtual drivers built-in, so xvda, with the root file system, cannot be found. Fortunately, adding the paravirtual drivers to the initial ram drive is undramatic:
    mkinitrd -f newinitrd 2.6.18-164.el5 --omit-scsi-modules with=xen-vbd with=xen-vnif preload xen-vbd preload xen-vnif*
The newinitrd file can then be copied to /boot with the right name for grub.
I thought I would pass this along as I found that there were great benefits to running the DomUs this way, performance-wise. At this point, I am not sure how these configurations would survive an upgrade of the kernel. I would think that an update to the initrd config file is in order. Thoughts welcome.

  • Oracle VM guests and CPU Licensing ?

    Hello All,
    1. If i have a server with dual core (means 2 cpu's in a single chip isn't it?), when it comes to Oracle DB licensing based on CPU.
    Do i need to count them as CPU= 2 or CPU=1 ?
    2. Will i get better performance if i set Virtual CPU=4 for guest OS despite having only a single physical CPU in the machine ?
    TIA,
    J J

Nope. :) Your 16 core license covers all 16 cores in the physical server, so you can run as many Oracle DB instances as you like. You can even over-commit VCPUs, i.e. give each guest 4 VCPUs for a total of 32 VCPUs on a 16-core machine. This still doesn't require any more licenses.
This is only recommended if your databases would only really use 20-40% of physical CPU cycles. If your instances are going to be quite busy, I wouldn't recommend over-committing.

  • Oracle 12c ASM Disk Problem on AIX

    Hi All,
We need to install 12.1.0.2 DB with ASM option on AIX 7.1. When we start to install 12.1.0.2 grid installation, in the 3.step we could not show adding Candidate disks to ASM. Disks right are 660 and oracle:oinstall ownership.
When we start to install 11gR2 installation on same platform we can see the Candidate Disk, and We can install 11gR2 ASM+DB on same platform. But for 12.1.0.2 is not.
How can we add Candidate Disks to 12c ASM İnstallation for below step ? The disks which is not shown for this step are like below. After first error I have changed disks' ownership like oracle:asmadmin, it isn't solved. I need urgent help.

    Hi Sve,
Thanks for replying me. What you have written are tried but not works. I have solved problem.
The problem is related AIX platform. I have Solved problem with below steps.
1- I have installed grid infrastructure with Software Only option.
2- After install Software Only Standalone Grid, I have tried to install manually ASM instance. But I have taken this error. rtld: 0712-001 Symbol CreateIoCompletionPort was referenced and it is solved with this MOSC ID: Doc ID1949184.1)
3- After Successfull 2.step you can now install ASM manually from asmca.

  • Arrangement of Oracle installation on disk drives

I've got 4 disk drives on the system
where I want to install Oracle server.
On 1. drive I want to install operating system
    + archived redo logs
on 2. drive Oracle server binaries,
on 3. drive datafiles + control file
on 4. drive undo tablespace + redo logs + temporary
    tablsp.
My question is: can I multiplex control file
and redo log files on disk No. 2, where there
is Oracle server installed? Oracle recommends
server binaries and databases to be on different
disks, can there be any problems with such an
    configuration concerning this recommendation?
    Thanks for advise, ...

Yes, you can multiplex control files on a single disk. I have a dev database with 6 control files on the E drive, which is just a partition of my C drive really. (Why, because in production my E drive is a 1 TB LUN consisting of 25 disks.) You can do the same for your on-line redo logs. Oracle RECOMMENDS they be on separate phyiscal devices. If you lose the device, you lose all copies. It's just a recommendation, not an enforced requirement.
That aside, I don't like your file layout at all. Why waste a whole spindle on the Oracle binaries. Very little I/O compared to other file types. I would put the O/S and Oracle binaries on the same disk, along with part of your pagefile. Now, use the spare disk to spread out your remaining I/O.

    Any use of the Oracle Database Express Edition is subject to the following limitations;
    1. Express Edition is limited to a single instance on any server;
    2. Express Edition may be installed on a multiple CPU server, but may only be executed on one processor in any server;
    3. Express Edition may only be used to support up to 4GB of user data (not including Express Edition system data);
    4. Express Edition may use up to 1 GB RAM of available memory.

    Hi,
First you can create the new network set which is mapped to guest subnet, after that you can create access rule for this network set.
If you want to control bandwidth, you may need 3-party tool like this:http://www.bsplitter.com/

  • WLC and ISE 1.1.1 guest MAC address limits

    Hi,
I am looking at implimenting a wireless hotspot and want to know if ISE 1.1.1 is able to enforce limits on the individual users (ie. Time limit, Data Limit)
These limits need to be erased at the end of the day.
I am using dynamic vlans to seperate out guests from corporate users.
ISE is in a 192.x.x.x address range and the guest vlan sits in a 10.x.x.x vlan.
Im struggeling with ISE terminating the Guest sessions and then not permitting that same user back onto the network.

Yes it can be done using the time profile option in ISE.Please review the below  links on how to configure time profiles for guest and sponsor portals.

  • Hyper-V Guest Disk Configuration and SAN placement

In a nutshell, I have a test 2012 R2 cluster (2-node) attached by fibre to a SAN.  The SAN at present is configured with 2 volumes, one RAID 10 and the other RAID 5.
2 questions really.  Is it best practice for each guest to have 2 virtual hard disks, one for OS and the other for data.  If so, would it be appropriate to put the OS vhdx on the RAID 10 and the data on RAID 5?
I'm trying to get a general rule of thumb rather than cater for say specifics such as SQL server.  I'm really looking at file servers and the like initially.
    Ian

Hi Ian, I have a similar setup in production, I have 5 CSV volumes, 2 of them are using SATA disks, and 3 are high performance SAS, based on an EMC VNX. I have classed these storage volume as Gold and Bronze.
we have some guests that are files servers, so the OS is on the fast disk, and the data is on the slower SATA disk.
I used SCVMM to Storage migrate and split the VHDX files up across CSV volumes.
I did see this in an article on Hyper-V and its a fully supported practice. I think it more down to requirements rather than best practice. and making use of any slower disk you have rather than wasting the high performance on applications that don't require
    it.
    Hope that helps
    Cheers
