XFCE4-Gnome with PEKWM

Hello Archers!
I have been using PEKWM for a month and I really love it. I feel really confortable moving, resizing and tabbing windows quickly.
I have tried to recreate all the things I used when I had XFCE4, like a bottom panel with the aplications icons, a pager, a dock, a clock, etc... But after try a wide range of applications (pypanel, tint2, bmpanel, ipager, trayer, cairo, avant and so on)  I just realised that what I really want is XFCE4 with Pekwm (instead of XFwm).
Is this really possible?
I've been googling and reading for an hour and but I have't found what exactly need to include in my xinitrc file.
This guy got it working using wolvix so I should be able to do it too using Arch: http://forums.wolvix.org/index.php?topic=1292
Thank you very much in advance

I post this just in case someone else want to use Gnome + Pekwm:
My ~/.xinitrc file looks like this:
#!/bin/sh
# ~/.xinitrc
conky &
numlockx &
xset -b &
exec ck-launch-session gnome-session &
exec pekwm
#It is very important to write pekwm the last one and without "&"
I boot directly without DM so my /etc/inittab is:
# /etc/inittab
id:5:initdefault:
rc::sysinit:/etc/rc.sysinit
rs:S1:wait:/etc/rc.single
rm:2345:wait:/etc/rc.multi
rh:06:wait:/etc/rc.shutdown
su:S:wait:/sbin/sulogin -p
c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 vc/1 linux
c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 vc/2 linux
c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 vc/3 linux
c4:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 vc/4 linux
c5:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 vc/5 linux
c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 vc/6 linux
ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -r now
x:5:once:/bin/su rafael -l -c "/bin/bash --login -c startx >/dev/null 2>&1"
Finally, open gconftool and set:
apps>nautilus>preferences>show_desktop: untick
Note: I tried  changing the following
desktop>gnome>session>required_components>windowmanager: replace metacity by pekwm
and creating a desktop entry for PekWM as it is said in the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PekWM
nano /usr/share/xsessions/Pekwm.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=PekWM
Comment=Start PekWM
Exec=/usr/local/bin/pekwm
Icon=
Type=Application
but didn't work because /usr/local/bin is empty. Any ideas?
Althought everything is working, I have the feeling that nautilus is not entirely happy.

  • Gnome with pekwm as WindowManager ?

    Hi,
    is that possible?
Since pekwm has no --replace option I disabled automatic restart of metacity in gnome and tried
    killall metacity && pekwm
    but that gives me
pekwm: root window unavailable, can't start!
    Any hints?
    TIA

    Thx for the tip!
I tried that and even killing nautilus completly just for a test before launching pekwm.
    Same result.
If I try the other way around aka starting
pekwm in .xinitrc and afterwards gnome-panel and nautilus manually I don't get this error but I do get the nautilus (gnome) menus
on right and middle click instead of the pekwm ones I want to have.
It seems that the combination gnome/openbox seem to just work better if I'm not missing something important.

  • Installing Gnome with Fink

I am trying to install the Gnome wm using Fink, I have gotten some of it installed but I am running into a problem with some of the packages. This is the error message:
OMF file [/sw/share/omf/gpl/gpl-pa.omf] does not validate against ScrollKeeper-OMF DTD: /sw/share/xml/scrollkeeper/dtds/scrollkeeper-omf.dtd. I also got a similar OMF error when I tried to install Gnome themes and applets. Any ideas? Thank you.

Post it to the fink users email list. It is very active and you will get advice and/or the package will get fixed quickly.
    http://news.gmane.org/gmane.os.apple.fink.general
When you describe your problem, provide them with more context (10.4, 10.5, intel, ppc, etc), what package you are having the error with, if it is happening during installation or when you try to initiate gnome with
    gnome-session

  • Xfce4, gnome, and my GTK apps???

What should I do here? So far I have done a fresh install of arch linux. I installed the light version of gnome, no extras. I did install a few gnome programs, like gnome-system-monitor, file roller, etc... functionality reasoning. I also have skype and audacious installed atm, pretty bare bones as u can see.
What I did was change DE's, I now am stuck on xfce4 and want to drop gnome from this arch install. What should I be worried about and how would you go about removing gnome without ruining the arch install? I really like my setup and my GTK apps, I do not wanna destroy it. Any advice???

on another note, how do I get my desktop icons back??? I experimented with the alt + ctrl + esc keyboard shortcut and did a kill process command on my desktop which in turned deleted the icons. Now they won't come back...

  • [Solved] No sound (using Gnome with Pulseaudio)

    Hello,
I have an issue with my audio. Since yesterday it has not been working, as in no sound in my headphones
I updated gnome, cinnamon and linux yesterday. I did not however update pulseaudio or anything else alsa related (as far as I can tell).
Another possible cause could be switching from cinnamon to gnome which I did yesterday (I don't know when exactly my audio stopped working).
    Other relevant facts:
-My mic is still working fine
-Using the Xonar DG sound card
    -Nothing is muted in alsamixer
-not a hardware issue, working fine in dual boot windows
Pulse audio in verbose mode suggest that the issue is not pulseaudio (as does pavucontrol's visualization):

My best guess at this point is that something(tm) is wrong with alsa. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this though. Any advice?
Please let me know if anything important is missing.

Did you ever have a copy of front channels or a mix of all of them played on the headphone jack with alsa only? I doubt it. If you kill pulseaudio and run following, what channels do you hear from headphones?
    speaker-test -c 8 -t wav -D plughw:DG,0
This is probably more of a pulseaudio issue, since alsa usually does not copy streams.
InfamousBlue wrote:I did not however update pulseaudio or anything else alsa related (as far as I can tell).
Partial upgrades are not supported. There are some remapping examples on the wiki. If you seek a hardware remapping solution try hdajackretask from alsa-tools, it works however for hda compliant cards.

  • A GNOME with NO text

I did a pacman sync for each of the gnome packages, but for some reason it doesn't have text...anywhere.  Any programs that are also based on GTK fail to display text also, what should I do?
I also have all the libs from the cd installed...
    Obviously I missed something

This morning I tried a fresh install again just to test it, with just the base packages and dhcpcd, nano, and xfree86 4.2 and KDE, just to see what 'could' be cuasing my problems.  I set up X and logged into KDE, everything here was fine, antialiasing and all.  After that i upgraded pacman, then upgraded the base packages, everything still ok.  Then I got xfree86 4.3,but continued using the config file from 4.2. I logged on to KDE and anialising wasn't working, so I backed up my x config and configured for 4.3, but antialiasing was still no-go.
This was just a test, so something must be either wrong in my xf86config file, or the 4.3 package.  I doubt its the package, but then where would my config be wrong?

  • [Xfce4] Issue with creating new tab in terminal

So, when I create a new tab in terminal I got a black rectangle in the top left corner of my screen it dimensions is like terminal window itself.
I have this problem on Xfce4 and Lxde as well.
What info do you need to help me with this issue?
    Thanks,
    Igor.

I noticed that problem with Xfce's terminal as well. I remember it also effecting firefox or other windows depending on how I moved things around.
I think I may have solved the issue by disabling Xfce's desktop effects, or something to that effect. I haven't seen the problem since I switched over to xmonad though.

  • Problem to install Xfce4-RC3 with the installer...

    Hi,
I'm using Archlinux and I tried to install Xfce4-RC3 but I get error. The installation wizard stops with this error:

    Running make all... done
    Running make install... failed
    And the error log says:

What does it mean? I just did a fresh install of Archlinux on my 20G Hdd. So I dont think it's because I dont have space enough!?
    Thanks for your help!

Hey murpheus, I would suggest using the pkgbuild's neri put together sometime ago in this thread.  I tried the installer for beta 2 a long time ago, but that was just for testing.  Using their installer will only kludge up your system and make things messy when Arch puts out the final 4.2 release.
I'm running 4.2-rc3 right now.  I used my own pkgbuild's before neri put out his, but check that whole thread (maybe going back to page 1) for instructions on installing his.

  • Xfce4 - problem with fonts again... (especially k3b)

    hi,
i did a base install from the arch widget iso 0.6 and used pacman to
    install everything i need. i use xfce4.
after installing licq i noticed the same font problem writen sevarel times in this forum (big  font with large spaces) but in the options of licq i could change these fonts, now it looks ok.
later i installed k3b because i was told that k3b is the easiest burner tool linux has to offer.
again this font problem (2nd time) but this time there was no font option in k3b settings/otion/menu .......
i read the "crummy fonts in kde" thread and followed all the tips... no results, fonts changed here and there but NOT in k3b!!!
in another thread in this forum someone postet a screenshot of his k3b...
    my k3b looks 100% the same :-/
but as i can remember the problem was not solved.
what i want is to change this font or another good and easy burning tool :-)
    thanks for every help!
    greeting matto

Check out this thread for help with XFCE4 fonts:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=5021
just read past the beer talk toward the bottom.
In my experience, large fonts have to do with improper DPI settings.  The best match is to find out what your resolution is, and then set your DPI to the horizontal DPI setting, as shown below (for mine):
    xdpyinfo | grep resolution
    resolution: 87x90 dots per inch
I set my DPI to 87 (the horizontal) and all is proportional.  You can also adjust the DPI settings to make the screen to the proper 4:3 aspect ratio.  For some reason, the NVIDIA driver kinda fubars it a bit, and I have to manually adjust it with certain resolutions.  I discuss how to compute those numbers in that thread as well.

Which caused everything else to fail because of dependencies. What am I doing wrong?
      Thanks!

Probably you are using python3 instead of python2.
See the Gnome Wiki page at

    and follow the instructions there.

  • No sound on GNOME with pulseaudio [Resolved]

    Hi there,
the title says it all: I've lost all sound in GNOME. Hardware is checked and fully working (dual-boot). I've gone through the Wiki and Mixer settings several times now, with no progress. pavumeter shows me active levels when playing some file, like in totem, but there's nothing to hear. I've both tried system wide use of pulseaudio as user based, all the same.
    Any ideas please?

In the end, if pavucontrol shows that your sound card IS detected and that sound is playing, the issue is probably alsa related. Things to check:-
    1. Is the app producing sound (level meter in pavucontrol)?
    2. Is the correct output sink selected (under playback tab in pavucontrol, compare with Output Devices tab)?
    3. Is the app or output device muted in pavucontrol? Also check output level in the Output Devices tab.
If the three steps are all working, then it almost certainly something being muted, or wrong detection of the sound card etc.

  • Xfce4 problems with second x?

    Hello.
I'm a bit confused here. Under Debian/Ubuntu, all one has to do after installing Xfce4 is type "startx". Simply enough, and unlike the Arch model I suppose as it apparently auto-configs everything for you.
Now after installing Xfce4 in Arch, I'm in a bit of a predicament. In order for the "startx' command to work from a tty console, I have to manually create/copy a .xinitrc file into the ~/ directory.
This is all well, and done. But... here's the issue...
On occasion, I'll switch to a different terminal to launch a second instance of x, but not just for a second desktop. Mostly, I do it for single apps. Some examples being....
    xinit -e mplayer *.mkv -- :2
    OR
    xinit -e wineconsole oblivion.exe -- :2
    Does anyone see the problem?
Instead of launching an x instance with only the app specified, I just load straight to the Xfce4 desktop. This is all due to the behavior of launching Xfce4 through creation of the ".xinitrc" file.
Are there any workarounds to this that anyone knows of?

    Padfoot wrote:
I suggest installing a display manager like GDM or XDM and launching it via the inittab method in the Arch wiki. This way you can delete your ~/.xinitrc file.
When you boot you will go to the display manager so you can log into your desktop, and from there you can change to another TTY and initiate your separate X instance.
    Cheers.
This works, and thanks for the heads up.
But... I also like to launch apps/games this way, without any other instances of x running as well.
After looking around a bit, I found a semi-solution of using aliases, but it also requires a manual configuration. I kind of like the idea of using default configurations that function in between upgrades, downgrades, or switching to an alternative DE without having to manually reconfigure something each time.
I ran either one of the following commands:
    alias startx='startxfce4'
    OR
    alias startx='exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --exit-with-session startxfce4'
The problem is that this only works for the current login. Upon reboot, the alias is no longer present...?
Any idea how I make this permanent?

  • Gnome with tint2 panel??

i was trying to figure out how to kill the gnome-panels and replace with tint2 along with trayer for at least one of the panels. i started to incorporate some of openbox into gnome. but any real detail info on how to do
i tried one method thru the gconf but that almost killed my gnome. anyhow ideas would be appreciated.

... but, if you want to get rid of the window manager (replacing it with openbox) and of the panel, perhaps you can consider to drop gnome as a DE, continuing to use all the gnome apps you like and need in an openbox environment

  • Xfce4: Problems with Sound and Screen Locking on ASUS G53S

    Hello everyone,
I recently installed Arch for the first time, and decided to use xfce4 for my desktop environment. Everything seems to work well after I followed the instructions given in the wiki, except for the sound and screen-locking functionality. Regarding the sound, I made sure that my user account is added to the audio group, and installed the gstreamer1.0-base-plugins and gstreamer1.0-good-plugins packages. The xfce4-mixer applet starts up without any warnings and recognizes the available devices, but I am still not able to hear any sound. The "Lock Screen" applet simply does nothing upon being clicked. Do you have any ideas as to what I should try in order to fix these problems?
    Thank you very much!

To be able to lock the screen you have to install and configure a screen locker or screen saver, e.g. xscreensaver, slock, i3lock, maybe combined with  xautolock. When you use a screen locker and not xscreensaver, XFCE might not recognize it. Then create a symlink in /usr/local/bin/xflock4 or use a shellscript if you need to pass parameters.
My configuration: xautolock with i3lock. /usr/local/bin/xflock4 is this executable shellscript:
    #!/bin/sh
    xautolock -locknow
xautolock is started in the XFCE autostart with this commandline: xautolock -locker 'i3lock -d -i ~/Bilder/arch/arch-linux-lock.png'
PS: If you like i3lock and need user switching capabilities, I can give you a patch where Ctrl-S calls a custom command (gdmflexiserver by default)

  • File association in Gnome with Firefox Beta/Aurora/Nightly not working

Wiki instructions only seem to work with Firefox in the repos.

Try to delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox Profile Folder to reset all file actions.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions#Resetting_download_actions
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
    See:
You can also try to reset Firefox:
