Xgrid systems, please share experience

I am interested and learning about xgrid systems, does anyone have such a system setup in their home? If so can you please elaborate on the infrastructure/setup, how many computers, how well it works, what apps utilize it, etc...
Anyhting and everything so I can learn about the xgrid system
ALSO, I want to setup a system for FCP or other processor heavy apps such that my powerbook is the master with a mac mini, imac, and windows pcs (if possible) on the network as well, via a wireless G... is this possible or is wireless G to slow (incomparison to gigabit ethernet) or to little of computers to notice anything?
Thank you for any and all info!

Have been playing around with Report Designer and I found it useful for basic formatting but not  for the one's you had mentioned in your post.
SAPs suggests you do all the data manipulation in the Query Designer or Infocube and use Report Designer for just formatting the data. In the past we had issues where we could not certain calculation in query designer and have used Crystal Reports along with BI data for similar kind of things which you had mentioned in your post (using sub reports and report level data manipulation). Report Designer unfortunately does not provide any of these functionalities.
I have seen comments from SAP saying Report Designer will be developed further, not sure of any specific functionality whichis coming in. I think it is SAPs first step in the formatted reporting area and may be in the future we will have a tool which can handle much more complex scenarios!
Thanks.

  • Please share experience with new Webroot for iMac, iPad, etc.

Webroot has expanded its malware product beyond just spyware to a full-featured product for both PC and apple products. We have a 3-seat license and have installed it on our 2-year old iMac (on Lion), our original iPad (on iOS 5), and our PC. On the iMac, it scans for malware periodically, and I think it does continuous monitoring, but I have not yet figured out how to initiate an unscheduled scan.  On the iPad, it appears as two apps, one of which appears to be a browser, which I haven't used yet. If you have this new Webroot on your Apple products, please share your experiences and thoughts about it, how you use it, and whether you think it is effective. Thank you.

I have done those things. I tried the same with an older ibook and three clicks and the airport icon showed an arrow (signaling it now is a base station) no problem but not on either of the leopard machines. is there a problem with sharing using leopard?
When I set the imac to share the ethernet connection and choose by airport the red Button changes to green. the preference window says "sharing your ethernet connection" but no change at the icon on the upper right menu bar. (I've always thought it changes to an arrow over the "radar" icon) if I close the sharing window and then reopen it or turn the airport on/off the internet sharing box becomes unchecked and sharing is turned off. I can't seem to get the radar icon to change and the sharing settings to stay "set".

  • Please share experience with Report Designer in BI7

I am looking for people to share their hands on experience with Report Designer in BI 7.0.
I have seen the video, blogs, sap documentation, and the marketing materials.  I have also test driven it myself.  I have found not found it very useful for complex formatting.  While I know there will be lots of opinions, I am looking for real life, hands on experiences you have had with the tool and if some of the complex things you have been able to do with it.
Here are some of challenges we are faced with:
    1.  Need ability to combine data from multiple queries into a single report.  For example, one query has statistics and the other has amounts.  <i><u>We need to be able to create averages combining the data from both queries into a SINGLE result area.</u></i>
    2.  We have need to be able to create a report where GL Accounts with activity over threshold amount are shown with a line for each account.  Any accounts with amounts less than threshold, should be grouped on a line called 'other'.  <i><u>Again, this needs to be combined into a single result area.</u></i>
When I say, single result area, I mean to be able to calculate amounts using data from both queries into a single result area.  Displaying each query separately side by side is not an issue.

  • Performance of BO on top of SAP BI: Please share experiences

    Hi,
I was wondering what your experiences are with BO on top of BW regarding performance.
    Kind regards,
    Daniel

    Hi Ingo,
we're facing similiar problems and my basis admin tells me that he already expand the ABAP memory alocation using 70% of the physical memory, also we have Enhancement Package 1 installed, but we're still facing the same error message.
FYI, the BO server uses 8 GB of RAM and 8 core processor, the SAP BW server uses 16 GB of RAM and 8 core processor. We want to analyze 3 years of daily data from highest hierarchi down to the details. We have 3 hierarchies :
    1. Sales : sales organization - sales office - distribution channel - customer group - sold to party
    2. Material : material group 1 - material group 2 - material group 3 - material
    3. Time : year - guarter - month - day
so far we are able to query only 1 week of data using webi and that generates 900+ webi report pages. the total rows of whole data is roughly 12 million rows. any suggestions?
    Thx

This depends on the person. Some people's brain just seems to find any distraction on the glass intolerable.  I have always used glossy screens on the Mac portables and have never had an issue with overhead lights and even using it outdoors.  When I received a matte screen by accident from work I thought it was terrible compared to the glossy.  The entire screen looks washed out (since there is an entire layer of material on top of the glass that does not exist on the glossy).  The retina version of the glossy display is also noticeably less reflective then the non retina glossy displays.

  • Please share experience with managed cluster

    Folks,
I am curious to hear about your experience with compressor's managed cluster.
Here is my experience with a setup that consists of
    a) 8 quadcore mac mini, with Mountain Lion and Compressor 4.06
    b) NFS storage connected with 1gb link to each mac mini
    c) Compressor preference set to never copy to/from cluster storage
Experiment 1: One managed cluster with 4 compressor service instances on eight mac mini. So a total of 32 compressor instances.
The instances are set to send an email when they go down.
Source: 4K Image sequence with 1850 images
    Target: Apple ProRes 422 (default)
    Output: NFS storage
    Observations:
    1) The target codec determines the number of segments the job gets broken down into. For example the HD 1080p setting will break the job into atmost 6 segments (regardless of 32 instances that I have available). In case of ProRes 422 the number of segment were 64 ie 2x more than the number of instances available.
    2) The compressors service instances are extremely temperamental and flimsy. I got over 100 error notification for this experimental job, about a dozen instances of compressor were in bad state/dead and the job failed with many errors as follows.
The error seems to indicate an issue with file naming, but I am unsure what it points towards
1/26/13 7:03:54.815 PM compressord[12399]: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[NSPlaceholderString initWithFormat:locale:arguments:]: nil argument'

    Output: NFS storage
Observations: job failed, two dead compressor instances and about 20 error notifications of instance down
    Conclusions:
Overall, the jobs which transcode movies from one format to another have a good chance of success. However the same is not true for Image sequences.
The distributed compressor instances are extremely flaky and their revival scheme of four times(as per documentation) is not enough.
I am eager to know your experience with distributed encoding using compressor.
    a) What are your thoughts on stability of distributed encoding using compressor for a large number of jobs
    b) Is there an automatic way to revive dead compressor instances?
    c) What other tools are out there which perform better? I am looking for a way to setup unmanned operation.

  • Please share experiences: FCP7 vs Pr CS6 on a MBP

I'm not new to Pr. I've been working with it on a MacPro 8-core.  Before I was using FCP7.  Pr is much faster, but much of that speed is because I have a CUDA card.
I just got a job to work on site doing some cutting on an MacBookPro4,1.  Last two years, I used the same laptop, but was using FCP7.  Footage was DVCProHD / P2.
I was hoping people who've done a significant amount of editing on a MBP with both FCP7 and Pr CS6 can give me their insight as to how the two compare on a laptop.
I will be on a tight deadline, and can't afford to get tied up rendering or exporting.  FCP is a known entity.  Pr isn't, to me, on a job like this.
Any relevant input will be appreciated.  Thank you.

Are there differences between computers over Airtunes? Are some better than other?
Not really. The AX can only handle audio at a 44.1kHz sample rate, regardless of the source ... so switching devices shouldn't make any difference.
iTunes uses a QuickTime CODEC to convert audio files to Apple Lossless, and then, uses AirTunes to send them to the AX. In turn, the AX uses built-in software that converts the Apple Lossless to an Encoded Digital Audio format. From there, digital audio is sent to a optical transceiver to convert the electrical signal to an optical one before sending it to the innermost part of the audio port.
The AX works only with iTunes v4.6+ and is limited to music files that iTunes can read; ie, 16-bit data only. (An exception is you can use a third-party product like Rogue Amoeba's AirFoil to stream other non-iTunes sources.) These data, though, can be in any file format that iTunes recognizes, from lossy MP3s at the low-quality end of the spectrum to Apple Lossless and lossless AIF or WAV files at the high end. Again, it is important to note that the AX functions only at a 44.1kHz sample rate. When you play 32kHz or 48kHz data, iTunes sample-rate-converts the data in real time before sending it to the AX.
In all honesty I have no idea what half of that means.
I'm having the same problem, horrible Airport Express sound. And all of my files are Apple Lossless which is apparently a completely copy of whatever is on the CD.
kHz and sample rate is irrelevant as far as I know. It's Lossless. It's a straight up copy basically, right?
So why does it sound so godawful through Airport Express?

  • Getting ready to leave Sprint and get 3G S - Please share experience

    Hello everyone,
I'm getting ready to order my first iPhone... I'm WAY overdue. I'm interested in hearing from those of you who left other carriers on how well the activation and porting process has gone. Did you order online and activate at home, pick up at Apple store, or pick up at AT&T store and activate there? Any glaring problems with any of those options? How quickly was your phone with your previous carrier deactivated?
    Thanks!

Bunky, since you have been on Sprint for 8 years, then you probably have the knowledge and apps that let you use those Sprint phones to their fullest. Also, you realize that you will pay AT&T $50.00/month over the price of your voice plan. And that $10.00 of that $30.00/month data cost is due to AT&T still subsidizing the $200.00 price drop of the iPhone ($240.00 over the 24 month contract) and they won't even consider matching the Sprint per month fees.
I have been a Nextel-Sprint customer for about 10 years and weathered their transition. I would love to have an iPhone, but $1200.00 ($50.00 x 24) over a two year period to have an iPhone versus keeping my Sprint PCS hybrid, well you do the math.
The iPhone may be the best mobile communication device on the market and it is manufactured by a company (Apple) with the highest customer satisfaction rating. Unfortunately it is linked, through contractual agreements, to a company that throttles back it's capabilities, their over priced plans, poor service, and marketing greed. Makes me wonder where pricing would be at if Cingular was the carrier instead of AT&T (remember AT&T bought Cingular after Apple announced the iPhone and the exclusive contract with Cingular).
    Good Luck

  • FCP and xgrid system?

I am new to FCP and xgrid and I am planning on getting FCP later in the spring. My question is, for someone who has expereince with xgrid, how well does FCP utilize an xgrid system? Also could an xgrid system be possible over a wireless G network or is this way to slow? I have a powerbook as my main computer and I could utilize a mac mini, iMac G5, and some windows computers (if possible) all as clients on the xgrid system... IS this possible?
Also if you just have an xgrid system please elaborate about its infrastructure/setup, how well it works, opinions, etc...
    Thank you in advance,
    TM

FCP at the present time makes no use of the xgrid renderfarm capability...

  • Can you please share your experience in implementing / upgrading the Primavera EPPM R8.3?

    Hi,
In our company various versions (V7, R8.1 and R8.3) of Primavera being used in various locations. To bring all the location to a common platform, management has decided to implement  / upgrade Primavera EPPM P6 R8.3 and also planned to integrate Primavera P6 R8.3 EPPM with Oracle (EBS) Projects application . Hence, If any of you implemented Primavera P6 EPPM R8.3 or upgraded the earlier versions to Primavera P6 R8.3. Please share your ideas and also the pros and cons of implementing R 8.3 EPPM. For your information we are going to have SQL database since all the existing databases are in SQL.
Please share your ideas and experiences.

    Hi,
we have done a lot of implementations and migrations to the P6 EPPM R8.3 from different former versions and this is working fine. the dbsetup does a good job.
A good way in my point of view is to set up a new P6 EPPM R8.3 system with a new PMDB Instance which will keep the configurations so that you easily can migrate or exchange the instances. Always remind to have a validated backup of any instance before migrating.
Before migration you should mind the following points:
The source version of the old P6 PMDB instance is:
P6.2.1 or before => first you need to migrate it to P6 V7.0 before you can migrate it to P6 R8.3
P6 V7.0 => check if you have used P6 WebAccess: if not okay, else check if you used jackrabbit (look for migration tool), Workflows (close all before migrating); Check if using Jobservice XER-Export (no longer available); Jobservice Batchreport (only Workaround available see Knowledgebase); Risks in the P6 Client (need to be manually migrated)
P6 R8.0 to R8.2 => Using Extended Schema, Enterprise Reporting Database, own BI Publisher Reports => Check stept to be taken for migration
    Other questions are:
Which authentication method will you use (native, LDAP, SSO)? If not using native and you want to connect the BI Publisher then you need also to use that authentication there.
The migration itself is pretty easy if you take care that all sessions are closed (no users or unclosed primavera sessions settings  on that instance, stop all Applications, interfaces or Services connected to the instance. Cleanup your refrdel_deletes, logical_deletes and (if used before), extended Schema tables.
Then you can migrate with dbsetup, use additional Service Packs and Fixpacks (actually Service Pack 1) on the instances and then you can connect them into the environment by adding it to the P6 Configuration.
I mentioned you don't want to put all data into one final PMDB-Instance.
    Regards,
    Daniel

  • Please share your understanding and experiences on Picking Request Output.

    Hi,
Have you ever involved in any project which related to the 'Picking Request' Output IDOC.
Normally it is triggered from Delivery output and corresponding picking data will be sent...
Please share your understanding on how to trigger this kind of Picking request ouput from delivery processing.
For example, you are the person is assigned to explore an existing SAP-system. Your task is to simulate an order cycle and most important points is to trigger the 'Picking request' Output IDOC in delivery order. But you dont know what Sales order type,Dlv type is used. The only thing you knew is the picking request output type is ZXXX from delivery header output.
How do you find out corresponding sales order type/Dlv order type/Billing order type according to an output type name ZXXX.
First, i will share my ideas:
Through ZXXX we could get corresponding condition records, as there contain some info like dlv type/sales order type..kinds of combinations..Follow that, i will find already proceessed sales documents. Then refer those document to do the re-creation.
Please kindly let me know your ideas.
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
Define a new O/p type. Select EDI in Transmission in Default values of O/p type for external system. Select ALE for internal system.
Assign an access sequence to that.
Maintain the determiantion procedure. In the requirement routine, put a condition that it should trigger only after picking / packing is done.
Assign the O/p to the delivery type.
In WE20, define a new partner to whom you want to send the IDOC. Give the required details.
Define a new IDOC processing prog & assign that to the process code of the IDOC in the partner  profiles.
So whenever you do picking, the Op type will be trigered which will be processed by the IDOC prog & send it to the external system.

    Sivanand

  • Reg: Please share... [OFF TOPIC]

    Hi Experts/Gurus,
Please share any of the toughest challenge(s) you faced in your long (Oracle) career.
Like some time back I saw a discussion between some biggies (Guru & ACEs) regarding the Y2K problem. They said about the server room, New year eve and the problems they faced. It was really nice and great inspiration for new folks like me. :-)
I know this is going very off-track, but just for a break.
This 'll also surely act as an inspiration for juniors like us. We would love to hear some interesting/tricky/innovative problems from your experiences.
Looking for an active participation. Frank, could please start this. ;-)
    Thanks!!
    Ranit B.

I'm sure most, if not all of us herethat have been around for a while, would have lots of war stories about someone or something blowing up the database and the trials and tribulations of getting it put back together properly. Many of us would also have lots of stories about that really tricky report/ETL job and all of the tricks we used to get it to work correctly and fast enough. However, for me the biggest challenges I face regularly have to do with the types of things that come up on this forum every day.
Basic things like not understanding correct datatype, dates are a real biggie here but storing/passing numbers as strings is right up there, and relying on implicit type conversions. Developers who do not think in sets and resort to cursors and row by row processing for (almost) every task. Misusing dynamic sql when it is not required, personally I rarely use execute immediate in my code, and when I do it is almost always for set up/re-set type activities in ETL code like truncating a staging table or disabling constraints/indexes prior to a data load.
These types of things can have an impact on performance, not only for the particular task that the piece of code is designed to accomplish, but quite possibly database wide. Flooding the shared pool with hundreds of copies of a sql statement that differ only by the literals used in a predicate (or worse as one app I dealt with only in literals in the projection) is detrimental to the health of the whole database, and when the app has hundreds of sql statements it gets reall bad for the well behaved developers inthe database.
Worse than the performance impact is the subtle bugs these types of things can introduce in the code. How many questions on this forum essentially boil down to "I put data in my table now when I try to query for a date range I get no rows, but I know I put it in" and the answer comes down to at some point in the process inserting the data or querying the data someone relied on an implicit string to date conversion and the date in the table (or perhaps the predicate) is actually 19 something or 00 something instead of the expected 20 something.
I cannot tell you how many hours I have spent debugging other people's code (usually after the data has been well and truly corrupted) asking how did that value get in that column because (so I'm told) it's impossible for that to happen. In the vast majority of the cases it is due to implicit data conversions.
Inspiring stories are all well and good, but if you are looking for inspiration to become a better developer/DBA look at the mindset of the people like Frank, Blushadow, Solomon and Billy that allow them to see the set-based solution to a problem (there is almost always one), to see the "correct" data types to use etc. And, to paraphrase Billy, programming is programming, basic good practices are the same in any language, so look at well-written code in other languages, not just PL/SQL.
But, if you want in inspiring story for a "junior", here is mine.
We had a very trick bit of ETL code that involved joining 5 or 6 tables. Complicating matters, because of the nature of the source system, one of the tables had to be pivotted, one had to be unpivotted and we needed a top-n query for one of the others. At the time, we were using 10 something, so no PIVOT/UNPIVOT, so I wrote a several hundred line query with
sub-queries over sub-queries, analytic functions and hierarchical queries. This produced correct results, and the run-time was more than adequate (about 3 minutes for 6.5 million rows as an insert append). I gave that query to one of our junior developers for integration into the ETL package we were creating. She looked at that monster and said "Huh?". I told her, as I tell everyone, break it down into pieces, run each of the bits alone to see what they do then build it back up again to see how it all fits together.
The next day, she came back to me and said "I spent a lot of time playing with your query, and I think I understand how it works. If I do understand, then I think this is an equivalent query, can you check it for me?" What she gave me was a fifty or so line query with two sub-queries, no analytics and no hierarchical queries. At first glance, it could not possibly work, but I checked it anyway and much to my surprise it was correct (and faster than mine). Sometimes, knowing too many tricks is not a good thing :-)
