XML and Excel

has anyone created any PLSQL using the XMLAGG and XMLELEMENT to create XML file output that can be read natively by MS Excel? I'd like to have/make something relatively simple that would have an API like this:
make_me_excel( p_query =>    'select a,b,c from my_table',
p_formats => 'a:text , b:date , c:number ',
p_path =>      '/tmp',
p_fname =>    'myfile.xls');Better yet, have oracle check the dictionary for the column types and auto format accordingly.
I could probably do everything myself except for getting it into the Excel XML format. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike

what is the XML format the Excel expects?
if you post that, maybe we can see how to generate that from the given query.

  • Transfering  Access and Excel to XML

    Dear all,
    Does anybody know the classes and APIs used to transfering Access and Excel to XML?
    Kevin

    There is no single Java API that is built to translate Access and Excel data into XML. However, you can use a simple combination of APIs to accomplish this task. A direct way of doing this is to create ODBC datasources from your Access or Excel sources, use JDBC to connect to and query those datasources. From there you can use the WebRowSet to convert your ResultSet into XML. If you require more control over the formatting of the data, you'll need write something that iterates over the ResultSet data, translating the column names and values into XML. I would recommend using JDOM to build your XML documents. WebRowSet is part of the Rowset API.
    Hope this clears things for you.

  • XML Report Excel Output Numeric & Character value left aligned

    Hi,
    I want the XML Report Excel ouput both numberic and character values to be left aligned in the report ouput. Currently my report excel ouput prints the number value right aligned and character value left aligned.
    I have tried to concat a space to the value to make that as a character value, but this gives a extra space in the report output, which shld not happen..
    Please could anyone help me with a solution.
    Thanks

    Hi Uday,
    You are making number as a string, by adding a character :) , so it will be displayed as string with space and not as number.

    Cronsey.

    Hi Kristin,
    My project is, User will be giving the parameters in the excel, and using VBA, the values are captured and an XML is created in the above mentioned format and is send to web service for the Insert/Update.
    I created a webservice which reads the values from <datacontract> and it consist of list of <dsRequests> where any number of Insert/Upate commands can be executed, with in which it contains a list of <RequestParams> for multiple insertion/Updation.
    //function call
    OriginalParams = generator.Function(query, OriginalParams);
    where OriginalParams is List<dsRequest>
    //inside function
    command.Parameters.Add()// parameters adding
    int
    val = command.ExecuteNonQuery();
    after the execution,an XML element is added for the response part.and it is looped for all the RequestParams.
    OriginalParams[i].Result.Add(
    newResult()
    { ERROR = "No Error",
    ROWS_EFFECTEFD = 1 });
    //once all the execution is done the response building part
    for(inta
    = 0; a < OriginalParams.Count; a++)
                    ResponseParams.Add(
    newdsResponse()
                      Result = OriginalParams[a].Result
    QUEST: When i am trying to build response XML with the following code, the parameters which are not given in the Request XML are also appearing in the Response.
    Ex: In my update query i will only send three parameters, but in my response building with ablove code, i am getting all the variables defined as INT in the RequestParameters.
    Is there any way i can avoid this and build response with only the parameters given in the Request ??

  • Where does workspace store the pdf and excel file ?

    Hi,
    I'm working on a Web Analysis project and I have created a dynamic web menu based on the workspace repository to improve the poor capacities of WA in terms of menu. I use the javascript API to control the WA applet from the menu.
    Now my problem is that my customer created a folder in workspace (which is translated into a sub menu of my dynamic menu), and that folder contains pdf and excel files. The function openFile which I use to open report in the applet doesn't work on pdf and excel files. So I've been looking for the files on the server, to know where they are stored, so that I could just modify the java class that generates the menu.
    I couldn't find those files on the server. Where are they ? Are they stored in the database as an xml string like the report s ? If yes then I might have a problem.
    Has anyone already done this ?
    Thanks for your help.
    Cyril

    Tomcat stores it in the work dir under $TOMCAT_HOME.
    There'll be directories like localhost%2f<urcontext>..
    As for as JSP changes being recognized, try refreshing ur browser....

  • XML to EXCEL with Conversion agent error: XML to EXCEL PROCCES FAILD

    Hello,
    I have scenario from Oracle database to Excel.
    For this scenario I use with conversion agent by itemfield to transfer data from XML to EXCEL.
    The scenario not worked.
    Few points:
    1. I add the conversion agent module to SAP XI receiver communication channel.
    2. When I change the scenario to oracle to xml (without using conversion agent) the scenario works OK.
    3. When I drag the CME file to the studio I found the error message: XML to EXCEL PROCCES FAILD.
    4. I use with conversion agent in other scenario (EDI to IDOC) without any problem.
    5. I'm not found any clue for this problem in XI RWB.

    hi Elad,
    to do the conversion,you have to define a module and import it into you CC.

  • Mime-type tag in web.xml and attachment download

    i have set a mime-type in web.xml as below:
    <mime-mapping>
         <extension>xls</extension>
         <mime-type>application/vnd.ms-excel</mime-type>
    </mime-mapping>
    And i have a simple jsp that only shows a table and i am making this jsp to get downloaded as an excel attachment. To make it possible i have written the following line in the JSP:
    response.setHeader( "content-disposition", "attachment; filename=myexcel.xls" );
    But i am not setting the content type first by writing:
    response.setContentType( "application/vnd.ms-excel" );
    since i have already mentioned the appropriate mime-type for excel files in web.xml.
    I am using both mozilla and IE. Both are showing file download dialog. But IE is able to correctly identify the type of the attachment and opens it up with Microsoft Excel whereas mozilla fails to identify the type, assumes it to be an HTML document and opens it up in a new window of IE.
    mozilla works fine only when i set the content type in the JSP itself. But IE works in all conditions even without having the mime-type tag in web.xml.
    If i have already specified the mime-type for particular type of file in web.xml, is there any requirement to set the content type again in the JSP/servlet?
    Please help. I even changed the mime-type for .xls (excel) files in web.xml and made it text/plain, but still the same thing is happening. IE is always showing the correct file type where as mozilla is taking it as an HTML document.
    i am using weblogic server 8.1.

    the web xml mime type setting are for static files served by the server...
    if you print a file directly to the output of the servlet, you must set the mime type, so DO write :
    response.setContentType( "application/vnd.ms-excel" );
    IE "works fine" because it also uses the file extension to decide the mime type... but in the absolute, it's a wrong behaviour

  • Outputting XML to Excel

    Hey all,
    So I have a page that uses a cfheader and cfdontent tag to
    open an Excel doc and I transform an XML item with XMLTransform()
    to the XML format for Excel. When I have debugging turned off it
    works fine. When I turn debugging on thought I get a parse error
    from Excel. It adds all the debugging html to the XML download and
    Excel dies with a Strict Parse Error. While it would be a rare
    case, someone else could have their browser adding additional html
    to the bottom of pages like the CF debugging output. I am trying to
    find a way to mark the end of my page as the end of Excel file. I
    close the <workbook> tag but don't know how to keep it from
    adding anything additional to the download.

    I guess one alternative might be to have your users make
    their changes locally
    and then upload their changes to the webserver. You would
    then write code
    to read/parse/datasource/etc this .xls. Or you could leave it
    as is and the next

  • Howto import XML into Excel table ?

    Hi,
    I asked this before in the Excel forums but received the suggestion that I ask here instead.  The question precis : How to ungrey the "Append new data to existing XML lists" checkbox so I can select it when importing XML data into an Excel
    spreadsheet.
    I have a local server which provides data in XML form and need to import successive reloads of the XML page into successive lines in an Excel spreadsheet.  I found the Excel help page entitled "How to use XML in Excel 2003" at http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/excel-help/how-to-use-xml-in-excel-2003-HA001101964.aspx?CTT=1&origin=EC001022986
    which was useful in so far as permitting me to import the data using the XML Source task pane and mapping the elements I need from the XML source to columns in the spreadsheet.
    In order to append successive lines from the XML source page, as I understand it from the link I quoted,  I need to change the XML Map properties to "Append new data to existing XML lists".  However this checkbox is greyed out in the
    XML Map properties dialog box so I can't select it.
    Any ideas how I can achieve my aims here ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
    Thank you for contacting Office IT Pro General Discussions Services.
    From your description, I understand that you tried to import XML into Excel table. You selected “Use the XML Source
    task pane” when opening the XML file, then you tried to check the option in the
    Map Properties window: "Append new data to existing XML lists".
    However, this option is grayed out. If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.
    I have checked the issue on my side but could not reproduce this issue. I suggest download the sample XML file as suggested on the page and test the
    issue again:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B4BD3283-AD0B-408D-9CE7-AB9C3537BBBB&displaylang=en
    If the problem does not occur with the sample XML file, this issue might occur as there are some problems with the XML you were using.
    If the problem also occurs in with the sample XML file, this issue might be related to some third-party software conflicts. I suggest checking this
    issue by starting Excel in the safe mode.
    Start the Office program in safe mode
    ==============
    1.
    Click Start, point to All Programs, and then point to
    Microsoft Office.
    2.
    Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click
    Microsoft Excel.
    If the problem does not occur in the safe mode, this issue might be related to some third-party add-ins in the Excel program, we can try to disable
    them. Normally, you could do the following to disable the conflict add-ins in your Excel program:
    Disable add-ins
    Click
    Tools > Options >
    Add-in, click Go button in the Manage:
    Com-in Add.
    Check if there are any add-ins,
    clear the checkbox to disable them.
    Close the Office program and
    restart it.
    Add one check back each time to the list of Add-In,
    restart the Office program, and repeat the above procedure. Once the issue reappears again, we can determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it.
    Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything is unclear or if there is anything
    I can do for you, please feel free to let me know.
    Best Regards,
    Sally Tang

  • App Files Saved as XML and Working with New Versions

    We work with app data in the form of array of large clusters and use LV Anything to XML conversion VIs to save to disk.
    The problem is when new app versions are developed and changes are made to the cluster format; we want the customer to be able to open the old version saved XML file format.
    Usually the saved cluster (in XML) has be changed by adding/removing a field or even changing the options of a ring control for example.
    The app name and version is stored in the XML.
    Question: Is there a way of easily working with XML file formats with slightly different fields?
    In the past we have worked with the raw XML text by searching for fields which are different and modifying them accordingly so they are accepted by the new file format.
    Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

    battler. wrote:
    I have written a software name and version cluster to XML.  How do you read the version field in the XML?  Do you use string search?  Is there a better way?
    Yes, I use String Search (because it is near the beginning of the XML string).  Depending on your XML "flavor", you should be able to uniquely-identify the Version information.
    I'm interested in how best to work with XML.  It seems cumbersome and prone to error to use string functions.  Is there a way or best practice of reading the XML fields directly without converting to cluster?
    XML is, after all, text with specific "tag" information, also text, identifying it.  String functions are pretty much "the way to go", but except in rare circumstances, you shouldn't necessarily "roll your own", but should try to use the utilities that come with your XML package that "know" how to do the mapping between the XML representation of a LabVIEW variable (and its value) and the Variable itself.
    Can you elaborate on these "mapping" and "reading/conversion" routines you're using?  How do they work and what functions do they use?
    An excellent question.  There are at least three XML packages out there for LabVIEW -- the "native" LabVIEW package that NI provides, EasyXML from JKI Software (distributed using VIPM), and GXML, also on the LabVIEW Package network.  I'm afraid that I'm slightly "abusing" XML, and have made some modifications to how I use EasyXML and GXML.
    If you simply view an XML file in a "smart" editor, you'll see a series of text lines with Begin/End tags (like HTML).  Depending on the XML "flavor", embedded between the tags are data that describe the LabVIEW variable type (e.g. Dbl, Cluster, Array, etc.) and also the value(s) of the Variable.  The "ReadXML" (or similarly-named) function takes this description and (usually) returns a Variant that you can "turn into" the chosen variable (because you know the data type).  [You may need to tell the Reader, in advance, the type of LabVIEW variable to expect so that it "knows when to stop reading"].
    As to how they work, they just do String pattern matching and processing, usually of a pretty sophisticated level, but then you don't have to do the hard work yourself!
    Why do you use Private Project library?  Is your project based on OO?
    The reason I used a Project Library with the "messy details" in the Private parts has nothing to do with OO, but rather with "data hiding".  I actually developed this for my data processing routines.  I had a set of routines that collected and analyzed the data (about 700 VIs).  Let's call this Project "Version 1".
    For Version 2, I basically added a dozen variables to the main  Data Cluster (having over a hundred elements) that characterized the response.  As this Cluster was in a Type Def, I didn't have to change my code very much to accomodate this new data format, so most of my VIs kept the same name, but were "different" because the underlying TypeDefs were different.
    So I have a Version 1 program that can analyze Version 1 data, and a Version 2 program for Version 2 data.  What I want is a Version-independent program that can look at the data, and then call for Version 1 or Version 2 analysis.  By burying the Version 1 and Version 2 code inside of a Project Library, and only exposing the top-level "Analyze My Data" VI, my Analysis routine, which didn't know (and didn't care) about the two different Data TypeDefs, just figures out (from the XML) which Version of data I have and then calls either Lib1:Analyze My Data or Lib2:Analyze My Data.  If I ever change the Version again, I just need to copy the code in the Library to a new Lib3 Library, modify the TypeDef and related version-specific code as needed, and I'm done.
    I may have made this sound easy -- trust me, it was a definite learning experience.  While trying this out, the first thing I did was to "break" my installations of LabVIEW 2012, 2013, and 2014 (curiously, LabVIEW 2011 wasn't broken).  It stayed "broken" for about a week, then "cured" itself (I'd done something illegal, or maybe just immoral, with my Library, and it took a while to purge the badness).

  • XML and tables in InDesign

    Hi everyone,
    I'm just starting to explore the possibilities of XML in InDesign and in need of some general information:
    The projects that I'm working with that I think would benefit from the XML workflow are files that include a number of tables (e.g., product names, descriptions, prices, etc. with header rows and some merged cells).
    The content of the tables are the same for a brochure-style layout and a poster-style layout but the brochure tables need to be tall and narrow and the poster tables short and wide (basically flipping the axes). So far I've handled this through a complicated dance of exporting the tables as text and using Excel to flip the axes and then import the tables back into InDesign (in order for this to work, I have to un-merge all merged cells and it still isn't perfect but a reasonable starting point).
    The editors make changes to the content in InDesign using InCopy (adding or removing rows or columns to add new products and/or prices, etc.)
    The poster and brochure versions of the file don't need to be live at the same time--they're used at different times of the year so it's a matter of loading the final brochure content into the poster then making any changes to the poster and 6 months later importing the final poster content into the brochure. And the cycle continues.
    Would XML handle well? The little I've read so far about XML and tables indicates that each cell would need to be tagged. This could easily result in mis-tagging a cell which would screw up the content import, right? I'm talking about hundreds (thousands?) of cells.
    And since the structure of the table would be changing due to adding/removing rows/columns, it seems I would need to tag each cell of the tables every time I wanted to import content.
    Am I understanding all this correctly?
    Thanks for your input.

    Hi
    You are right each cell nee to be tagged in XML tables, if you are working with more than hundreds/thousands of cells, be careful in content tagging. adding/removing columns/rows would really affect the structure of the XML and if it need to extract/export the content the structure of XML will not be correct. It is better to avoid XML tables in case of adding/removing columns/rows.

    As mentioned by Abhilasha, this is the expected behavior.
    In order to validate you could place the following URL in the browser.
    http://servername:portno/dswsbobje. you would see Tomcats home page which will display the list of Services.
    As far as the Live office in Excel is concerned , If you are getting a yellow  exclamation mark stating (Web service not correct) next to Session URL, try changing the servername to IPaddress of the server.
    Eg: http://ipaddress:portno/dswsbobje/services/Session
    While inserting the Session URL in the Live Office settings confirm the URL as per above.
    If the issue still persists, you could configure the host file entry in you client machine.
    Let me know if the information is helpful.
