Xorg-server not a dependency for gdm or gnome

Hi all,
I am making livecd's for mirror my various installations of hardware.  I have all the packages I want installed by running pacman -Qt.  On a system that uses ATI drivers, xorg-server doesn't appear to be a dependency which I think is a bit odd.
On my nvidia-based machines, it is a dependency, shouldn't it be required for ATI and other video drivers?  How can you install a working system without xorg-server or some xorg type of server?
My simple fix is to manually set the list of packages to install and append xorg-server to the end, but shouldn't the dependency tree be more complete?
Thanks,
Walter

I don't think it depends on xorg-server because you don't have to have xorg-server for your drivers to do something useful. You can benefit from increased framebuffer resolution without it, and I'm certain you can still use CUDA without xorg-server (it's actually preferred that it isn't running).
Also, you can use GUI applications through SSH, where the remote machine does not have xorg installed.
Edit: I may be wrong about this, and it may just be an oversight. If someone else agrees that it should be a dependency, you should file a request on the bugtracker.

  • Firefox periodically shows "server not found" message for Verizon/Yahoo email. Often self corrects in 5 to 10 minutes ?

System is Windows VISTA. While on Verizon/Yahoo mail Firefox will lose the connection and shoe a "server not found" message. Explorer will connect with no problem to the email server. The problem self corrects with in 5 or 10 minutes but this may happen 5 or 6 time in a day.
Is this a Firefox problem with proxy access. Settings appear to be the same.

i forgot to mention , that when i striped this machine back down to 10.3.7 and before i re built i did do a hardware check with the original install Disks [3] and every thing came back clean.
the weird ness with the colors on window, if i pass a app like text edit over the area , the color will not cover the app but stay in the background.
when i first saw this color thing i had the preference pane out and was moving it around on screen and the colors were bleeding off of the preference pane onto the screen.

  • Building package using makepkg does not resolve dependency for another

I am trying to install yaourt from the AUR. Yaourt required that package-query be installed, and this package further required another, etc.
In short, package-query required yajl, which I downloaded from the AUR. This package does not actually have a PKGBUILD, but rather un-tars into a file that you need to merge with /usr. After doing so I tried to make the package-query package but was still met with a dependency discrepancy. Luckily, yajl was available in the official repositories (same version). After using pacman to install it everything went fine and package-query built and installed fine.
When I went to build yaourt, using makepkg, it failed and informed that I was missing a dependency, package-query.
So, in short, is there a registry or something that keeps track of these installed packages? I imagine that when running makepkg there is a query against installed packages to see if you meet the dependency requirements. What can I do to build yaourt in this situation?

cower doesn't have any dependencies that are not in the official repositories.  It doesn't build packages automatically, but it will download the source tarballs and unpack them for you.  It can also handle dependencies with the official repos and the AUR.
So for example, if you were to do cower -dd yaourt it would tell you that gettext, diffutils, and pacman are in the official repos.  Then it would download the source tarball for package-query and resolve all of its dependencies.  And it would download the yauort source tarball and unpack that for you.  So it gives you an idea of what depends on what and in which order you should build and install.
But you really just shouldn't use yaourt.  Many of the upgrade issues that arise on these forums stem from people using yaourt (particularly those who blindly run yaourt -Syua).  The pacaur I mentioned above is a bash script that wraps cower.  So it too should be able to be built and installed without having to resolve other AUR dependencies.
    Edit:
But none of this is really answering the question though. When I make a package from the AUR, the dependency requirement when trying to install another package is never met. That is, if package A requires B and I then installed B (from the AUR), when I try to make A again it still informs me that B was never installed.
If this is the case, then you really don't know how to properly use the AUR, and thus should be reading up on that rather than trying to work around it with an AUR helper.

  • Server not found when Windows wakes up

When I wake up my Windows 7 desktop machine Firefox 7 always shows "server not found" errors for websites that continuously update, like huffingtonpost or drudgereport.
Clicking on "try again" always works fine, but I'd like to know how to set things so it would happen automatically. This started with Firefox 4.0. before that there was no problem.

It is possible the firewall hasn't completely restarted since the PC is waking up from sleep mode, but I would still blame Firefox. It should allow for this possibility just after sleep mode has ended instead of putting up a dialog box I have to click manually to fix the problem. Other browsers (Internet Explorer) don't have this problem.
But if there is a Firefox option along the lines of "wake up last after sleep mode ends" that I don't have set properly I'd like to know about it.

  • HOWTO: xorg-server with no hal dependency (was: xorg-server-screw-hal)

it annoys me that hal and evdev are hard depends of xorg-server-1.5.3 and autoAddDevices is enabled by default.  i realize the fix is actually fairly trivial, but there's just someting inelegant about installing a package, disabling a feature, then uninstalling the dependencies for that feature.  so here's a PKGBUILD that suits my taste.  maybe it'll make your life just a bit easier.
EDIT: SCRATCH EVERYTHING BELOW.  the change to the patch will almost guarantee failure if you do this my way.  it doesn't change the default config; it removes the configuration option enitrely.  i get 'epic fail' for that one.  also, x still complains and fails to start if libhal.so.1 is missing, even if you're not using it.  grrrr....
p.s.: you'll want to open xserver-1.5.3-AEI-on-by-default.patch, go to line 101, and change TRUE to FALSE.  this turns off autoAddDevices by default.  then run makepkg -g and replace the last md5 sum with the new for the changed patch file.

ok, so i'm almost embarassed to post this.  it's actually pretty trivial.  nevertheless, might as well finish what i've started.
    re-statement of the problem:
    1) xorg-server 1.5.3 depends on hal and evdev in order to provide input hotplugging.
    2) input hotplugging can be turned off, as decsribed here: Arch Wiki Xinput Hotplugging Page.  however, x still requires libhal.so.1 at runtime or it fails.  (it took me ages of googling to figure out that this is indeed the case.)
    3) therefore, xorg-server must be rebuilt without hal if you'd like to run v.1.5.3 without installing hal.
    how-to correct it:
    1) sync abs tree
    2) copy xorg-server from the abs tree to your local build directory
    3) remove 'hal' and 'xf86-input-evdev' from the depends array
    4) change --enable-config-{hal,dbus} to --disable-config-{hal,dbus}  (apparently the server has *some* support for input hotplugging through dbus without hal.  apparently, it also sucked.  so my method is to turn off both, entirely.)
    5) makepkg
    6) pacman -U
    7) add xorg-server to IgnorePkg in /etc/pacman.conf.  the next time xorg-server is upgraded, pacman -Syu will give you a warning and the opportunity to exit.  this is your notice to rebuild and upgrade your local xorg-server.
8?) i suppose you could go through the patches that are applied to xorg-server and figure out which aren't needed.  that would be all neat and clean, but probably not necessary.

  • Keyboard not working with xorg-server 1.6.1-1 or xkeyboard 1.5-1

    Hello!
I have a problem with a no working keyboard. It seems like this is a problem related to some of the latest xkeyboard-config or xorg-server versions. This have been a problem some time, but it have been solved by downgrading xkeyboard-config to v1.5-1 and xorg-server to v1.6.1-1.
I'm booting into runlevel 3. Keyboard is working in the terminal, but when I run startx, the keyboard stops working. The mouse works fine.
Have tested with an empty xorg.conf file. Then I get a 'no screen found' error. And I have tryed to enable the keyboard entry in xorg.conf. X starts, but no keyboard. Hal is running.
    Any ideas?

  • Identity Server has not been configured for this new user/group suffix

    Hi all
I am having a problem trying to configure the Directory Server (5.2) for Messaging Server.
    My configuration is as follows:
    SJES Q12005
    Server 1 - Directory Server 5.2
Server 1 - Access Manager (formerly Identity Server)
    Server 1 - Web Server 6.1
I have successfully installed the above and can login to Access Manager.
I next installed Calendar & Messengar Server on "Server 1". Upon running "comm_dssetup.pl" from /opt/SUNWcomds/sbin, I get the following error:
"Identity Server has not been configured for this new user/group suffix"
Copy and paste of what I entered:
    bash-2.05# perl comm_dssetup.pl
Welcome to the Directory Server preparation tool for
    Sun Java(tm) System communication services.
    (Version 6.3 Revision 1.0)
This tool prepares your directory server for use by the
communications services which include Messaging, Calendar and their components.
    The logfile is /var/tmp/dssetup_20050830165940.log.
Do you want to continue [y]:
Please enter the full path to the directory where the Sun ONE
    Directory Server was installed.
    Directory server root [var/opt/mps/serverroot] : /opt/mps/serverroot
Please select a directory server instance from the following list:
    [1] slapd-sunldap
Which instance do you want [1]:
Please enter the directory manager DN [cn=Directory Manager]: cn=DirMan
    Password:
    Detected DS version 5.2
Will this directory server be used for users/groups [Yes]:
    Please enter the Users/Groups base suffix [dc=samplecompany-dev,dc=co,dc=uk] : ou=infrastructure,o=sampletown,dc=samplecompany-dev,dc=co,dc=uk
There are 3 possible schema types:
1 - schema 1 for systems with iMS 5.x data
1.5 - schema 2 compatibility for systems with iMS 5.x data
that has been converted with commdirmig
2 - schema 2 native for systems using Identity Server
    Please enter the Schema Type (1, 1.5, 2) [1]: 2
Identity Server has not been configured for this new user/group suffix
You can opt to continue, but you will not be able to use
features that depend on Identity Server
Are you sure you want this schema type? [n]:
I have entered my user group suffix exactly as specified during the Access Manager install (hence I am able to login as "amadmin").
Looking at the LDAP logs to try and figure out whats going wrong I see its not getting hits on all searches it is performing:

    Hi
    Thanks for your reply!
I did mis-type, my mistake - sorry about that.
If I dont over-ride the default it works, I've pretty much got the whole setup working now but I'm not particularly over the moon about the way the ldap tree is setup, I'd like finer granuality as we are going to attempt to get syncronization working with AD.
I have an idea about how I'd like to set up our Mail/Calendar/LDAP infrastructure the 2nd time around (I'm just testing at the mo) - so I might have a question or two for you if you dont mind taking a look when you have a minute?
    Thanks Jay

I talked with a tech today and he said I cloud is having problems which should be resolved shortly.
In the mean time I used the .me smtp server settings which allowed me to send mail.

  • Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'machinename': The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0x00002EFE).

I have a 3 node cluster that has replica setup to replicate to another cluster off-site.
Suddenly one of the servers is not replicating with the error:
Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'machinename': The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0x00002EFE). (Virtual Machine ID CC0FD4CC-F9B7-4C68-ABE8-B7D52A87899F)
All other servers are replicating fine so there cannot be a permissions or connectivity issue between the 2 clusters.
This server has 2TB of data so I'd rather not have to start the replication again.
    Does anyone have any pointers?
    Thanks.

    Hi drensta,
Based on my knowledge , "hyper-v replica broker " is needed for failover cluster replica .
Here is a link for "Why is the "Hyper-V Replica Broker" required?"
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/virtualization/archive/2012/03/27/why-is-the-quot-hyper-v-replica-broker-quot-required.aspx
    Hope this hleps

Hi I am using an iphone 4 and its was working fine.  Presently its giving browsing error.  Whenever I am trying to browse internet by using safari or any other browser it retruns with an error message "server not responding" Even the same thing is happening with youtube also. The worst part is am able to check my mails, able to chat and so on... only thing not able to browse through the browser.  I have tried restore option also.  This is happening with both Wlan and Data con. too
    Please help...

I do not really know much about this kind of problem, but i may be your internet connection.
If you are on your own #G network then:
Go to Settings > then enable "Airplane Mode". Count to 10 and then disable it.
Then wait patiently until you get a good connection and then try again.
If you are on a nearby Wi-Fi connection then:
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > then disable then enable after counting to 10. Make sure that you are connected and then try again.
If all else fails, then you need to contact your provider for assistance.

    1. While installing Oracle Client i used first option to install "Oracle Instant Client " with minimum configuration.
    2. While configuring Database in " EPM System Configurator" window...in Server name it was not taking exact server name instead was taking "localhost". So i used localhost...Can this be an issue?
In EPM Configuration I got message that "Oracle data access client not installed" is it related to EPM Server.
I am confused about installation is "ODAC" and "Oracle Data Access Client" are same or different. As i am not getting "Oracle Data Access Client" to download.
I just want " Essbase , Planning and Reporting Applications".
Please do help as i need to solve this problem urgently.
    Thanks in Advance.
    -Sushil

Is this a personal install of the EPM? If so you may need to install the MS Loopback adaptor for Oracle db first
For EPMA it may be easier just to install the full Oracle Client as it should work then.
    Cheers

  • Windows Server 2012 - Backup failing with Exchange - The application will not be available for recovery from this backup. the consistency check failed

    Hi
We have a Windows 2012 server with Exchange 2013, all is working fine except now i am getting issues with the backup.
'Exchange - The application will not be available for recovery from this backup. the consistency check failed for the component Microsoft Exchange Server'
I have checked the database all is fine, i have created a new db and move all mailbox;s over and then removed the old db, i have enabled circular logging and then disabled it, it seems no matter what i do i cannot get a full backup!
i did have to restore the server once and the backups still worked for about 4 days after that and then stopped, i have also tried to remove and re add the backup role!
i am stumped, any advice would be great!

    Hi
Ok, i created a test db and tried to back it up right away, it failed, i did not add any mailbox's to it either. i got quite a few events in the windows logs, as well as the same event above i got the following:

  • Work around for server not found problems on FF36

I have found a work around for all the people having server not found problems with FF36.
If you manually set your network adapter DNS to an external DNS server (as opposed to your local ISP) then the problem goes away. I set mine to use the two google DNS servers:
    Preferred: 8.8.8.8
    Alternate: 8.8.4.4
Not a clue why this works but it is 100% successful on my desktop PC, whereas before I could hardly connect to a webpage with FF36 without multiple page refreshes and much frustration, even though FF35 was fine and rolling back to FF35 was also fine.
Something has changed in FF36 and either the way it handles DNS or the way it works with some network adapters.
It is nothing to do with add-ons, profiles or firewall software as I have tried all of these things and only the DNS change made a difference. I even copied over a full working profile and the program files directory for Mozilla from my portable which was having no problems and the problem still existed on the desktop, which is why I started looking at the network adapater since everything else between the working PC and the non working one was identical.
Hopefully this will help the developers to pin down the real cause of the problem and fix it in the next release.

Well done. Thanks for finding that.
That is not only assigned but has an approved patch included in the scheduled Fx36.0.1 release so it should be fixed in few days, watch out for the upgrade.
    * Bug 1093983 - DNS resolver should not use 'ANY' to get cached records for TTL [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1093983#c35 c#35]
    * https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Channels/Meetings/2015-03-03#Schedule_Update
With the bug now fixed it would not really be appropriate to add further comment. I do now see another related bug assigned but not being fast tracked, so if all goes well that will probably land in Firefox 39.
    * Bug 1138242 - DNS: Request A and AAAA record types rather than ANY when obtaining TTL on Windows
