XQuery on XML DB

I'm using the XQuery Java API (OJXQI) and I managed to combine the content of local XML file and relational table from database in the following way:
FOR $a IN document ("bib.xml")/bib/book
FOR $b IN sqlquery("select * from scott.emp")/ROW
WHERE $b/SAL < $a/@year
RETURN
<EMP empID="{$b/EMPNO}"> {$b/ENAME} {$a/@year}</EMP>
Now I would like to reach the content of Oracle XML DB also. How to do it? I tried using the 'sqlquery' function like this:
FOR $a IN sqlquery("SELECT extractValue
(object_value,'/PurchaseOrder/Reference')
FROM purchaseorder")/ROW
RETURN $a
and WebDAV access
FOR $a IN document("http://localhost:8080/home/SCOTT/purchaseOrders/2002/Jun/JONES-20021009123336602PDT.xml")
RETURN {$a//Requestor}
but it doesn't do the trick.

You may want to check out new preview technology from Oracle called XML Data synthesis (XDS) (http://otn.oracle.com/tech/xml/xds/index.html).
XDS is based on XQuery. In XDS you can define a external XQuery function declaratively. XDS supports various types of data sources like any type of database, Web service, Semi-structured Non-XML data like an Excel Spreadsheet which can be translated to XML, any XML document,Any EIS source using J2EE Connector Architecture and an XQuery itself as a source to another XQuery.

• How to include the first row of detail in every xquery transformed xml?

I am dealing with a XML file,where i need to publish to different BS.
First node will be a common node node which contains vital info,second node goes to one BS and third goes to another BS.
*

*
*<details></details> (they are unbounded, but the first detail tag which comes in the input file is a mandatory tag in such a way that it needs to be included in every transformed message)*
*<trailer></trailer>*
We need to apply x query transformation on it in such a way:
*

*
*<1st detail></1st detail>*
*<detail></detail> (2nd row of detail in input file)* -------------------------> Goes to BS1
*<trailer></trailer>..*
*

*
*<1st detail></1st detail>*
*<detail></detail> (3rd row of detail in input file)* ----------------------------->Goes to BS2
*<trailer></trailer>*..
And so on.
Now, the problem is how to include the first row( *1st detail* ) of detail in every xquery transformed xml?

are you looping of this input with a for each?
/yourdata/details[1] should return always the first detail element.
or before the for each do an assing of this first detail element to "generic_details_var"
and use this var in every looping iteration (in an assign or as input for xquery)

• Execute a xquery in XML file ith Size Limit.

Hi there,
I have the following XML file:
<Fuzzy>
<Rule>
<rule_ID>1</rule_ID>
<event>insert</event>
<happen>after</happen>
<condaction>collection('test.dbxml')/Bookstore/Book</condaction>
</Rule>
</Fuzzy>
I use the following code to execute the xquery in the TAG <condaction>:
String Query = "collection('test.dbxml')/Fuzzy/Rule/condaction/text()";
XmlQueryExpression ue = myManager.prepare(Query, context);
XmlResults results = ue.execute(context);
while(results.hasNext()) {
System.out.println("==================================");
String test = results.next().asString();
System.out.println(test);
XmlQueryExpression e = myManager.prepare(test, context);
XmlResults results1 = e.execute(context);
while(results1.hasNext()) {
System.out.println("==================================");
System.out.println(results1.next().asString());
The above execute the xquery and provides me the result. But the same code has problems when I use the below Xquery which has a longer Xquery length. Is there any limit on the size of xquery ?
<Fuzzy>
<Rule>
<rule_ID>1</rule_ID>
<event>insert</event>
<happen>af ter</happen>
<condaction>if(collection('test.dbxml')/Bookstore/Book/book_ID gt 0 and collection('test.dbxml')/Bookstore/Book/price lt 20) then insert nodes <b4>inserted child</b4> after
collection('test.dbxml')/Bookstore/Book/title else insert nodes <b4>inserted child</b4> after collection('test.dbxml')/Bookstore/Book</condaction>
</Rule>
</Fuzzy>
The problem I identify is that the 'test' variable only prints the part of the xquery present in the tag:
================================
if(collection('test.dbxml')/Bookstore/Book/book_ID gt 0 and collection('test.dbxml')/Bookstore/Book/price lt 20) then insert nodes
Please help me to identify if I am wrong or if there are any limitations that is causing this problem.
Thanks.

FYI..
XML has a special set of characters that cannot be used in normal XML strings. These characters are:

& - &

< - <

> - >

" - "

' - '

I replaced the above ones in my XML Tag that has xquery and it worked !!

• Xquery + Oracle XML

How can I use XQuery to perform query's in documents xml that are stored in a column of the kind XMLTYPE?
How can I use XQuery on Oracle DB-XML?

"The directory paths for these JAR files are relative to the ORACLE_HOME directory of your Oracle Database installation."
So, to get the JARs you need to install the database (but you don't need to start it).
oracle.xml.xquery.OXQDataSource is in oxquery.jar.

• How to append the declaration tags to generated xml using Xquery

Hi,
How to append the declaration tags to generated xml using Xquery.generated XML is like
<ROOT>
<CHILD1></CHILD1>
<CHILD2></CHILD2>
</ROOT>
Here I want to append the and the result xml should be

<ROOT>
<CHILD1></CHILD1>
<CHILD2></CHILD2>
</ROOT>
Can anybody help to do this.
Thanks
Mani

First assign this element to a temp variable
<ROOT>
<CHILD1></CHILD1>
<CHILD2></CHILD2>
</ROOT>
Now in XQuery expression create a new variable

$temp

• How to Write Log Message in a XML Data Source Report

Hi Friends,
Can anyone help me out what is the process of writing a log file in the XML Data Source Report. for eg: in Plsql we use FND_LOG.PUT_LINE to print the Log message in the Concurrent Request Output. in the similar manner, when we develop a report using XML, where we write Coding in XQuery of XML, what is the process need to follow to print the logs for the XQuery.
Any inputs/Suggestion on this Highly appreciable.
Thanks in advance.

Create an RMI application (for example) that writes the log, and let all logging calls call that remote application.
Something like that is the only feasible way that doesn't require you to have a drive on the remote machine mapped to the local one (which causes its own problems as you could have multiple simultaneous write attempts...).

• XSLT and XQuery recommendation for BPEL and OSB

Hi,
1. Why is XQuery recommeded for OSB and XSLT for BPEL. Are there any specific performance optimization reason behind this.
2. Apart from OSB and BPEL, both XSLT and XQuery has xml transformation options and creating HTML. What is the difference between these two.
Thanks in advance!

you can create the graphical view of Xquery in Eclipse but not for XSLT
Xquery is much faster than XSLT in OSB.
Through XSLT however you can achieve more complex transformation.
OSB has its historic origins in BEA Aqalogic stable and so Xquery was widely used used even though XSLT is supported. It is a matter of choice(your standards in your organization,your developer skillsets,your re-usable libraries etc )
In Jdeveloper you can develop xslt in graphical mode though and attain complex transformation

First of all "XMLOptimizationCheck" AFAIK is not yet explained. Haven't checked support.oracle.com for a while though.
It's more or less currently an internal used, but for the public a fast method to detect, that Oracle internal XQuery / XPath optimization rewrites towards SQL methods (shortcuts) are not properly working. SYS_XQEXVAL probably means something like XQuery Element XML Value/validation (??? towards SQL value) isn't producing a simple construct with a predicate validation. The reasons section gives insight, just like a 10053 trace, on what attempts/rules where applied and failed or worked. I am guessing that the overall cost for the use of the normal PK index is so high because it can not be properly matched and/or optimized against the global index structure supporting the partitions.
In all, a bit more info regarding the table/partition structure and its used index regime/structure would be helpful.
Beside that. THIS IS A BUG and should be reported, request for help, via support.oracle.com

• Accessing object payload type attributes by index?

Plz help
Using object type in queues enforce some limitations to altering object type. You can use only ALTER TYPE and use alteration that only "expand" properties. It'is possible to change column type from VARCHAR2(10) to VARCHAR2(20) but not vice versa. Also it's impossible to drop object attribute or re-create object type. While storing object source in svn it's uncomfortable to view object source as sequence of ALTER TYPE commands. So, it seems that solution can be usage XMLTYPE as object payload type. But this raise another problem.
With object type I can use dequeue with BROWSE option that allows to cut by object attribute value. But how to browse by specific attribute value in case of XMLTYPE as object payload type?
The second question is how to index specific attribute both in object type and in XMLTYPE? I will have a large queue and need quick lookup by specific object attributes.
The only possibility I see is to index CORR_ID column. It will work good for one attribute. But what to do if I will need index several attributes? Compose them as string? It will lead to data denormalization...

Thanx for your answer
The goal was to create a queues with possibility to store processed data for some period of time for tracking purposes. RETENTION_TIME settings allows to do that. Moreover, it can be changed dynamically. This is exactly what our customer requires. Queues with configurable history keeping setting.
We already have self realized queues based on usual heap tables. In these tables we don't work with object type. As result we can directly index any attribute (column) and have quick access to it. Requirements to make configurable how long processed data saved are pushes to partitioned tables with administrative scripts that will drop old partitions by end user request. This solution seemed to me much more complex in realization then simple change of the RETENTION_TIME parameter via DBMS_AQADM. But after that I found this issue with quick access to attributes...
And yes, I'm aware about XQuery for XML. But without any index on column it will lead to full scan with additional XQuery expression calculation for each value.

• Using external Variables between proxies in OSB

Hello there,
Im trying to figure out if it is possible, to store some kind of message (could be payload, XML, or just a string) to an external variable so it could be reused among different proxies. Anyone knows if this is possible, and if yes, how can it be implemented? I have seen in "The Definitive Guide to SOA: Oracle Service Bus, Second Edition" an approach with xquery, but im not sure if that is helpful: +"OSB has the ability to store XQuery, WSDL, XML Schema, XSLT, WS-Policy files, and more as reusable resources. The ability to store these resources (sometimes referred to as assets or artifacts) along with proxy services makes OSB a lightweight service repository. It's certainly a best practice to reuse these resources whenever possible."+
Thank you in advance

As I said in my previous post, my case is this: I would like to be able, to have a common variable that I would be able to assign inside one proxy, and used from another proxy. I don't know if it can be implemented. Calling from one proxy to another in order to pass the variable is not my case. One scenario is that one proxy will be able to save in runtime a value in an external variable and another proxy would be able to use it. By saying :+"You can definitely reuse them without any problem, but you can hardly put any value into them from proxy service (in runtime)."+ you mean that I can have an external variable pre-assigned, but I will not be able to update in runtime? Is this 100% sure?
Thank you for your quick answer.

• Global Constants / Variable in OSB

I want to define global Constants / Variable in OSB and I want to access them in XSLT when I am tranforming the requests...
Any idea how can I do that?
I want to use these variables and constants for server name and ports (in different environment) and some other stuff.

We have done a similar implementation for the same scenario. We have created a Xquery where we put in the configuration information as an XML and then in the pipeline stages we use the Assign the Xquery to a a temporary variable and then use the values of the xml using relative xpath expressions.
This way any time we need to make any changes to the confguration we know once place we can change and it gets reflected in the complete code base.
Below is how we have done it:
- create a Xquery with xml configurations (say commonconfig.xq)
- then using the Assign action get the output of this xquery into a temp var (say commonConfig)
- then use the configurable values using the relative xpath in the Assign action (say Assign $commonConfig/param1/text() to param1Value
Let me know if you need further information.
Thanks,
Patrick

• Deprecated Xpath 1.0 functions in 11gR2

According to this whitepaper:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/xmldb/xmlqueryoptimize11gr2-168036.pdf
Starting 11gR2, Oracle has deprecated many older proprietary mainly XPath 1.0 based operators in favor of standards based XQuery syntax, as listed in Table 1 below.
Table 1
OLD ORACLE PROPRIETARY SYNTAX --> NEW XQUERY SQL/XML BASED SYNTAX
extract() --> XMLQuery()
extractValue --> XMLCast(XMLQuery())
existsNode() --> XMLExists() As I was just getting comfortable with the old syntax this gets me slightly worried. I tried to look into the new syntax but that looks like an absolute jungle of text compared to the very easliy readible Xpath expressions. But that could well be just me not quite understanding the XQuery syntax.
What we mainly do with XML in our application is get some XML from webservices and extract values from it. A typical example is:
select extractvalue(l_xml
,'/kennisgevingsBericht/body/PRS[position()=1]/PRSADRINS/@xsi:nil'
,'xmlns="http://www.egem.nl/StUF/sector/bg/0204" xmlns:StUF="http://www.egem.nl/StUF/StUF0204" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"')
into l_waarde
from dual;What would this look like using the Xquery syntax?

Something like this...
select XMLCAST
XMLQUERY
'declare default element namespace "http://www.egem.nl/StUF/sector/bg/0204"; (: :)
declare namespace StUF "http://www.egem.nl/StUF/StUF0204"; (: :)
declare namespace xsi "http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" (: :)
$X/kennisgevingsBericht/body/PRS[position()=1]/PRSADRINS/@xsi:nil'
passing l_xml as "X" returning content
as VARCHAR2(4000)
into l_waarde
from dualIf you have multple extractValues then XMLTable may be a better option
Note that the old operators will continue to work. However they will not be enhanced ....
