Xserve 2006 and Lion -- any issues

We just became aware that our old suite of 2006 Xserves cannot do Mountain Lion -- a bit of a surprise. We got these 4 years ago so then the deal we got seemed good.  So my quesiton which I cannot find a clear answer to is this:  Are there issues with Lion on these old Xserves we are missing.  I get this gut feeling from having run Lion on 4 of these for better part of year and now finding them failing  and having to reinstall -- corruption issues--- that as a transition from Snow Leopard to Moutain Lion that some issues may be the almost transition status of Lion that leads to Mt Lion.
Cany anyone provide information if we are going to have these  problems again?  Is trying to run more than Snow Leopard Server on the 2006 Xserves going to continue to have issues?  We had hoped to go to Moutain Lion which clearly is more robust and not with issues that Lion Server brought, but that is not going to work.  Our racks do not have room, nor do we have funds to buy some new Mac Pro Servers. And even the expense of 4 new mini servers and the need to get a HD rack to work with them rather than bays of  Xserves which we use as file servers is more than we had planned for in this years budget.
The ultimate question in having file servers for a mostly now Mac with a few specialized Windows 7 hard ware  (and ipads and iphones) end up being better on Snow Leopard?  One issue is that some of file servers have people running a few items on them, may be hard to also go back to Snow Leopard, but then we have tried to push these as archival file servers and do your work locally but the old habits of working on files on the servers still is hard to kill in  people who say well we have never done it that way.. argggg.
Any feedback on what we are trying to do would be very much appreciated before we go too much further down rabbit trail of keeping Lion going on these servers. 3 of the 4 have issues now, the ones that people do alot of file access on  -- maybe a problem with Lion and file servicess???
Thanks in advance,
Russ Jacobson

  • MSSQL and JDBC - any issues ?

My website hosting company recommend that I use MSSQL rather than MySql because my site is hosted on Windows servers. Is there any issues of compatibility with JDBC and MSSQL. It being Microsoft there is bound to be some little nuances which will hold back easy connectivity from my desktop application. Would really appreciate anyone's thoughts. Thanks in advance, Hugh

I actually prefer MS SQL Server with the jTDS driver to any other databases I've used. No little M$ nuances that I've discovered.
Of course I like the product no matter how you connect to it. I have a single MS SQL Server that has served as the central database for a website, a Tier II ERP system, a Workflow system, a CRM package and the thing has been running non-stop (no shutdowns and virtually NO application error logs) for 1 year and 4 months. Seriously. The thing's a rock.

  • Anyone install Snow Leopard on a 13" MacBook Pro and have any issues?

Just wondering if anyone is this forum installed Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro 13" and what occured if any?
just want to know to really think before i upgrade.... getting really tense about this after seeing all these problems that are not only happening to third party apps but to the acctual system and native apps (safari, itunes, etc) Kinda Scared... i know Apple is a great company and does great things never imagined and im a big fan for 6 years when i was little, so i was surprised to see so many problems after release...

I am having a similar issue. I have upgraded my Mac Pro without any issues. However, my MB Pro has told me that the install was successful and was to restart. Upon restart the machine passes the initial boot (Apple Logo and Spinner) then it presents a black screen and will not complete the boot to the login screen. The fan is running, if I close the lid it tries to sleep, but does not appear to sleep. It is on and the light is solid (no pulsing for sleep).
I booted in verbose and the messages all looked good and then it posted the last messages to fast to see and it went to black screen.
    Very Frustrating....

  • Mountain Lion and Lion wifi issues

Don't start on me about there being multiple threads on that subject already.  I was told by a very respected member of these forums to start my own thread on the issue.
Dropping wifi started with Lion and for the last 10 months with ML.  I've been in touch with Apple, they called me after reading my old post and had me run test for them with no help.  I've done completely clean installs on newly reformatted hard drive and using a USB drive to install ML.  It won't connect to wifi to finish install half the time so other software isn't the issue.
I've tried just about every fix posted.  A lot of them with Apple on the phone.  I've replaced my router knowing that wouldn't fix it because I take my Mac with me and it drops wifi on any router or network.
I have 2 Macs and only one has ever had this issue.
You don't have to believe I've tried everything, that I've had Apple call me or that I even have the issue.
I've been asked to post the names of the engineers that have contacted me.  Why would you need to know that in order to believe me, especially if you admit to not knowing any.
All I want to know is there a fix?  Yes/No
Remember it doesn't want to connect on a clean install.
    P.S.:
For all those looking for reason's not to help me, my dog is yawning in the picture not growling.  Yes I've gotten mad on other threads but how many times can you be called a liar just because their fixes didn't work for me or I won't post engineers names.

    Thanks for that list.
Out of all you posted I tried everything with Apple on the phone.
I'm the only one who uses this Mac and I constantly check my settings incase something was changed on it's own because of some app.  But I'll lock it after retrying everything over again.
I'll be glad to get it down to once every few days again. I haven't complaned about it in a long time because I could live with that.  That's where I was before it went back to dropping constantly. Lets face it once a day would be great.  I've had to reboot just trying to reply.
I've started taking some live on line courses so it's not just an announce to me.  It started again before I started classes.
The 10.8.3 update made it worse.  But not enough to go back to 10.8.2.
My mail program is affected the worst.  When wifi drops and Mail is running I always have to force quit.  I know that's an affect no the cause.
I do have another Genius Bar appointment for that and a couple of other issues.  The first time they denied there were any wifi issues until I gave them the names of the engineers that called me with their email addresses and phone numbers.  I've since lost their phone numbers but still have their email addresses.  I know one was a CA area code and the Main one was from TX.  I have emailed them this week but still no reply.
Like I said once it went down to dropping every few days I didn't care any more.
I'll keep you up to date.

  • Xserve 2006 and HDD modules

Dears i have a problem that i was installed on my xserve 10.6.8 then my soft raid configuration become degraded and  found that one of hte hard disks became fault .
i replaced the hard disk with another one i bought it from the market not apple one but the xserve didnt recognize any think just 2 modules.
i tried to swap the pays between the HDD's but still recognni just to bays .
    any suggestions ?

The Xserve was designed to work with specific Apple-labelled drives. Users have had intermittent luck (or not) using third party drives, especially larger drives. Apple never advertised the ability to swap drives in the sleds.
There are few things you can try, but the easiest may be to look for an official (used) Xserve drive from a used equipment dealer. A quick Google for 'Xserve parts' should get you going.

  • TS3243 The light on my Time Machine disk is on all the time. The back ups still occur OK and without any issues but I need to 'turn off' the light. Any ideas?

The light on my external Time Machine drive is on all the time. Up until about six onths ago it only came on when it was backing up. The drive is working perfectly and backing up regularly, but the light is driving me mad. I have tried to find an option to put it out but so far have not managed to do it. The drive is a Seagate 1TB Freeagent and has 913 GB free so cannot be anywhere near full. Can anyone offer any advice or guidance to turn the light off?

I suggest that you contact Seagate technical support.
    Ciao.

I just installed OSX Lion (10.7.2) and updated to the newest version of Logic express (9.1.5) on a macbook and every time I playback audio I get this error message:  [Disk is too slow or System Overload. (-10010) The Sudden Motion Sensor may have parked the hard drive head, or the disk performance is not sufficient to read or write all audio tracks, or the system was not able to process all data in time]

Have a look into the Preferences folder (YourUserFolder/Libraries/Preferences/) and trash all Logic preferences.
You'll have to setup the program again.

The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion or Mountain Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
You can upgrade direct from 10.6.8 to 10.8 Mountain Lion without going through 10.7 Lion with the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody. The Model 5,1 will probably run 10.9 Mavricks when it comes out.
10.8 Mountain Lion is a download from the App Store, the price is $19.99.
Mountain Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.8 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Mountain Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Mountain Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • Any issue upgrading to Mountain Lion on a 15 inch MBP

I haven't upgraded to Mountain Lion yet and I'm considering doing it. Any issues I should know about? I have a Mid 2010 MBP 15 inch. Thanks!

    Not really.
Repair the hard drive and permissions.
Make a cloned backup using Disk Utility.
    Purchase and download Mountain Lion.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work.
^^ that's the main problem. Here's the full history.
I bought a new 13" i5 MBP, early 2011 edition. I had an old white Macbook 2.14 ghz core2duo on Snow Leopard. I attempted to port over my time machine backup, but encountered problems in that my User was inaccessible from the new computer after the import finished, and I had to go in and change the root password, etc, and for some reason or another, I couldn't install any programs at all from that administrator's account. By "couldn't" I mean I could install them, but upon installation they would never boot. So, I took it to the apple store and did a clean install from the most up to date Lion OSX. Then, I created a brand new admin account, instead of trying to import the old one, and things seemed great. Then, I just imported my old files from the TM backup, but not any system settings, permissions, or user data. Just my Docs, pics, vids, apps, and itunes stuff.
Here's where things get weird again. I imported this stuff under the name "old", but all of these folders have a red negative sign on them, marking them as restricted. So, from my main admin account, I cannot even peruse these folders. Since I didn't import user data, I can't sign in to the "old" account to change permissions. I already tried to change the permissions from system preferences, but that didn't change anything. And now, for whatever reason, of all the apps that were imported then, MS Office is the only set of apps that does not work. When I click on it, it just says there was a problem and asks if I'd like to send a report to apple. I tried reinstalling it to no avail. I'm an English student, so i really need access to Word. Can anyone help? The Apple store is a major detour for me and would like to fix this issue myself.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode.  If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.
I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion. I now want to fix the underlying problem.
I'm not running any weird background processes and in my energy saver settings I've tagged "put the hard disk to sleep when possible:, "allow power button to put computer to sleep" and "automatically reduce brigthness". All pretty standard.
Is there anyone who can give me some pointers ?

Today I solved the same problem for my iMac running Snow Leopard. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008791#15947706. The method may help you, too.
For me it was the DynDNS Updater preventing my iMac from automatically entering sleep mode.
To my knowledge the cause of this sleep problem can only be a peripheral device or a process. So I suggest to first unplug all peripherals and test whether that's the cause. If not, I suggest to terminate one process after another and to test automatic entering of sleep mode after each. Start with user processes; continue with system process if necessary.
At least that's the way I found the offending process. Fortunately, I was able to change the configuration of that process to allow again automatic entering of sleep mode.
    Good luck!

  • 10.7.5 and mainstage 2.2.2 - Any issues before I upgrade?

Going from 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 was a nightmare, so I had to go back to 10.7.3.  I am wondering if I should upgrade to 10.7.5
    Any Issues?

In my experience, mainstage 2.2.2 is as stable as 2.2.1 on both lion and mountain lion. The only caveat is that I have had significant problems since 2.2.1 with a specific AU (my main piano sound, worse luck) with is Truepianos. Something changed in mainstage and I get major CPU spiking causing audio dropout during performances. However I have a duel core mackbook pro and reports are that this is limited to these machines.
