Xserve G4 and OSX server 10.5

hello,
i've a problem installing osx 10.5 server on a Xserve G4: the cd drive does not support DVD DL so i can't boot from dvd .. i've tried to boot the server in taget mode to install osx 10.5 from my macbook pro but if i press "T" during the server boot it dosn't enter target boot and it shut down after few seconds..
How can i install OSX 10.5 on a xserve g4 without dvd rom ?
Thank you so much for help.

You can't install via Target Disk Mode connected to a MacBook Pro.
Since the MacBook Pro is an Intel machine, the installer will insist on a GPT-formatted drive to install on. The G4 cannot boot from a GPT-based drive, only an APM.
Therefore, even if you did install it, the G4 wouldn't boot anyway.
This would work if you had another PowerPC-based machine you could use with TDM, but it won't work with your MacBook Pro.
If you don't have an external DVD player then your next best bet is to clone the DVD to a FireWire hard drive and boot the G4 from that.

  • Server File Sharing unstable on mac and windows network on Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0

Since I've updated our mac mini server from Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X to Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0  we are having sharing issues with Windows (7 and 8) and OSX Mavericks users, not being able to access files on the mac mini server.
What I've notice is that OSX Serer 3.0 stop working and I have to restart the Mac Mini Server to make things start working again.
This was not happening with Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X.
On the Windows and OSX users what happen is the computers keep trying to connect to the server and are not being able to open or copy files. Again this is intermittent, and I suspect it might be a OSX Server bug.
Any one having the same problem or can give us and advice would be great help.
    Thanks.
    Andre Tenenbaum

I too am having this exact problem as well as a few of my network administrator contacts that have gone through the Mavericks / Server 3 upgrade.
It may be worth noting that before the upgrade I had run a mac mini server (core 2 duo) that never had any unintentional downtime, and the current mac server had never gone down or lost connection so I know it has nothing to do with user or network configuration.
    NAS server hardware:
    - Mac Mini core i5
    - 16 GiB ram
    -  Promise Pegasus Raid5 external drive (thunderbolt)
I am NOT running time machine as the backup.
Everyting posted above is occuring although the rate at which my users lose acces is sporadic.  Sometimes the server will stay up 24-36 hours and sometimes it will only stay up for around 4.  Every user, every group loses acces AT THE EXACT SAME TIME EVERYTIME to EVERY SHAREPOINT...all of my local users as well as my remote users.  All of my users are on Windows machines (mostly win7, but a couple of XP and 8 users as well).  The share is accessed via a mapped drive using the format x.x.x.x/share and I have had 0 issues with getting users connected.  The problem is 100% keeping them connected.  When the users lose access the get the "drive cannot be accessed" error on their end, however when I check the server 3 app, it still shows all users connected and I have let it run for a few minutes and the idle times do change.
I also cannot see any spikes in the Activity monitor that might indicate a memory strain issue on the server side, but I assume that is because I am not watching the Activity Monitor at the moment everyone loses access.
Let me say that the SMB2 protocol does work much better when it actually works, much faster, but intermitent connectivity is a VERY SERIOUS ISSUE and has resulted in several corrupt files for my workers already.  Also, because I was one of the unfortunate people that had the upgrade lock up on me and I had to restart it, I lost my 10.8.x recover backup and so I would have to do a clean install in order to restore my server back to its original state. I am also hesitant to do this because I would most likely only be able to download the Server3 app from the app store and I have not heard from apple or any other power user group on whether the bug is with the app or the OS.

  • GarageBand and OSX Server have 'INSTALL' buttons in App Store when they are installed

    Hi,
GarageBand and OSX Server keep showing up under the Purchases tab in App Store with an 'Install' button even though they are installed.  All the other apps that are installed have an 'Open' button.  I tried installing multiple times and it keeps saying 'Install'.  My concern is that I won't get updates because the system thinks they're not installed.
    Regards, Patrick

Unless you erased the disk when you reinstalled OX v10.7, your apps should still be in your Applications folder.
You can only, "Accept" one time...
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

  • LDAP iPhone 3.1.3, iPad and OSX Server 10.6

    Hello
First of all, sorry for my English.
I have new a Mac Mini Server. With my MBP I can connect to the server, iCal and Addresses syncs fine between Server and MBP.
Now I try for a long time, iPhone and iPad to connect with the server. With both, iCal works fine. Unfortunately with both Devices I can't sync Addresses.
Have somebody a suggestion to me what is wrong in my settings?
    Thanks a lot for helping.

    Well,
Not exactly true. Right now - yes there is no sync between address book and OSX Server, however, since you have a 10.6.X server CardDAV is a function that is supported.
iOS 4.0 (which is due for the iPhone in a week or so) does have built in support for CardDAV accounts.
I can't comment on its ability to do so as I haven't had the time to play with it since I received my 4.0 GM on Tuesday morning, but there are a few people reporting success.
So, wait a week or so - you'll get your CardDAV address book to work with your iPhone.
NOW IF APPLE WILL ONLY GIVE US NATIVE PUSH SUPPORT FOR EMAIL FROM OSX TO THE IPHONE...
    **** What a glaring oversight....
    (Stepping off soapbox now...)

  • Osx maverick and osx server

I  have update my software to osx maverick, when i was reading the support web page i understood it to say that i have to update osx server as well.
is that right. I'm slightly confused first time mac use.
    nicole

If you were using the OSX Server before, yes, you do have to update it by buying it at the App Store. If you were not using the server, you don't need it for Mavericks to run.

  • Xserve down and out. Xsan, Final Cut and OSX Server next?

    Not looking good for us.

I think I read on this forum that you couldn't work with FCP4.5 projects directly from the Xsan because 4.5 was not POSIX compliant. We're using FCP5 on Xsan 1.1 and storing them on the Xsan for backup purposes. When we want to work on the project at hand we drag it to the desktop and open it from there. Everything works fine. We haven't tried to work with a project from the Xsan.
I'm a little bit confused about your question about LUNs. You can have the metadata and storage on the same LUN if you chose to do so. The way I see it you have three options:
First, if you have a half populated Xserve RAID then format it RAID5 (hopefully you have already done so). Then tell Xsan Admin to use that LUN in a storage pool that can contain both metadata and storage. This would work better if you chose to fully populate the RAID. Then you can add the 2nd LUN to that storage pool.
The 2nd config would be to split up those 7 drives. Do a RAID1 with two drives on the first controller. Then do a RAID5 with 5 drives on the 2nd controller. You would then have two LUNs and two storage pools. The problem with this is you would have to buy a whole new RAID unit if you wanted to add on. However, you would get more performance by spreading LUNs over more controllers with 160MB/s of performance.
The 3rd config would be to do a RAID1 on two drives and then a RAID 5 on 5 drives on the same controller. This would then let you split things up and also add more storage later. You could then add 5 more drives on the other controller and make that a RAID5. Then take the other two drives and do a RAID0 for rendering or audio or something.
The bottom line is there are a few options. The best way to do things is to utilize your bandwidth coming from your controllers.
I'm not sure how the Apple Xsan Support works, but I'd assume they might be nice enough to help out in the set up process.
    Good Luck,

  • VNC and OSX server

    Hi,
I use UltraVNC to remote view my Xserve from a PC. The problem is when I set the screen saver to lock the screen after say 5 mins, or log out I lose my connection and cannot get back in unless I physically go to the server and enter my credentials. If I keep my account on the server logged in with no screen, etc saver all is ok. I feel this is not a secure way to do things as I am relying on the strength of the VNC password, plus if somebody has access to the physical server they have complete control of the system.
I am interested to know how other people lock their machine while using VNC?
    Any advice is much appreciated.
    Cheers

You went under System Preferences > Sharing > Remote Management and clicked Computer Settings and checked the "Allow VNC Users with password..."?
The VNC protocol that Apple uses is very particular. I have never been able to connect to it using a plain VNC viewer with less than full colors. With that said, you should install Vine VNC Server (here)
After you install Vine, make sure you uncheck that System Preference that allows VNC so they don't fight over who has VNC authority.

  • Yosemite  and  OSX Server

Last year I purchased OS X Server to my newly installed Mac Mini, which serves as a hub for my files as well as a media center. It has worked flawless as a Time Machine server as well. I have 2 IOS units, 2 mac minis and a MacBook pro making backups to this machine.
A couple of minutes ago I updated to OS X Yosemite, I checked my version of OS X Server, the available version 3.2.2 states that this particular update supports functions for Yosemite.
After updating to Yosemite my OS X Server stopped so I tried to update to the latest version available (3.2.2 as stated above), how ever - it now says that my Version of OS X is to new? What's up with that?
I also find that there is a version 4.0 out of OS X server. But I need to purchase this one. It's not a free upgrade for me. How come? I'm not very happy about this, If I new I wouldn't have updated to Yosemite after all.
I would really like to have an official state ment regarding this from Apple.
Not very happy at the moment...

In App store OS X Server 3.2.2 compatibility is said to be 'OS X 10.9.5 or later'. So it shouldn't be a problem.

  • IWeb and OSX Server Blogging (Blojsam)

    I have OS X Server 10.4.
Is there a way to (easily) integrate the Blog system on OS X Server with iWeb?
    thanks,
    James

    Interesting insights, but...
Why is it possible to seamlessly publish on the .mac
account but not on our corporate Mac Server? Or is it?
What do you mean by "seamlessly publish"? You should probably be able to publish to a folder located on your server. What extra stuff you would need to imitate the special features available on .Mac I don't know. I think I've seen articles about how to create something close to an iDisk on your own server, one of which is

  • Making RAID config of existing installed OSX server

    Hi,
the situation for the moment is:
XServe with 1x60Gb disk and OSX Server with communigate, and a data disk 1x120Gb as backup drive.
Can I make a mirror of 2x 120Gb without reinstallation of the server?
    eg:
    - Make an image of the 60Gb harddisk
    - Remove 60Gb disk and insert 2 x 120Gb disks
    - make a RAID volume
    - XServe in FW mode and put the image back on a 120Gb disk.
    Will this work?
    Thanks,
    Bart

For a start, which version of Mac OS X Server.
If you have two 120GB disks my recommendation would be to set them up as a mirror, then use asr to replicate the OS partition onto the mirror. Then you can simply reboot off the mirror and you're done.

  • Help for first install of macpro with osx server

    Hello to all
it's my first message on this forum, i'm seeking for help because i'm kind of new with Mac systems.
    I'm gonna explain the problem
So we are going to buy a mac pro and put 4*2To inside with raid 5 and osx server.
The problem is that the cost of installation of sotwre and deployement etc is really expensive.
I need to create a vpn too, this mac pro is gonna be a storage and multiple users must have acces to it. In fact this mac will be connected on the router and users will acces to it on local network then later we're gonna move from our base so the mac will be at the home of one of us and other users will have to access it from outside.
I was thinking avoyding cost of install by doing it myself.
So i've thinked that the best way to do it is by asking help to the community.
Is anyone can help me with this or tell me where i can find tutorials to do it?
I have skills but this is hard form me. The thing is that i learn fast. But i need help.
Maybe my post is not really clear i write as it comes to me, english is not my langage too.
So feel free to ask me questions or informations if you need.
In the same time i'm reading posts on the foum about this kindof installations.
    Thank u so much
    .anto.

    Dear Marcassin
i am happy to help to your problem .
first i would say you must read the Documentation. and you should familier with Mac Os installation System.
in your Mac Server DVD you will find the schedule sheet . print that and plan your server first. it will really help full. then come and list down the all the requirements.
may be you will need more services after that.
But again again again . read that sheet and fill all the requirements. and come back or read specific captors in the Documentation.

  • OSX Server / MAMP / Move material from client to server

    I have a several questions.
On my laptop I've been using MAMP (mamp.info) for quite some time, and I love it, most notably for the ease of use and clear directory structure. I've recently purchased a mini and osx server to learn that environment, and I know it already has php and apache installed. I'm actually running some web pages from the server now.
Question is, I'd like to use the mamp stack on the server... is this a good idea. I like that all the files are in one directory. From a security standpoint, is it safer to use the included stuff in osx server?
also, i'd like to use phpmyadmin and drupal on the server, like I am on the client stack once i'm done programming stuff. How can I go about this?
thanks in advance for the info

Question is, I'd like to use the mamp stack on the server... is this a good idea. I like that all the files are in one directory. From a security standpoint, is it safer to use the included stuff in osx server?
I've never used MAMP to know what it's plusses are, although I guess it must have some since a number of people seem to use it (although maybe that's because they don't know most of the stuff is built-in). However, if you do go that route you're required to maintain it yourself with regard to updates (compared to the built-in version that Apple periodically updates via Software Update). This may be good or bad depending on a) how much time you have on your hands and b) how quickly MAMP update their distribution vs. Apple.
I also loathe the fact that MAMP puts all its files in /Applications (this is just wrong).
also, i'd like to use phpmyadmin and drupal on the server, like I am on the client stack once i'm done programming stuff. How can I go about this?
Just download and install them like you would anywhere else. I can't speak for Drupal but I've used PHPMyAdmin on Mac OS X for years.

  • PHP 4 will not compile in PHP5 on OSX Server 10.5.5  Mac Mini

I have been using a commercial server which does not give access to php.ini but bought a Mac Mini and OSX Server 10.5.5. My old PHP 4 program will not compile in PHP5. It gives weird compilation errors to do with curly brackets but as soon as I alter one bracket it jumps to another similar error somewhere else in the program. I think it may require tweeking the php.ini or httpd.conf files which I have opened using Terminal but I don't know what might need to be changed. I expected this to be a turn-key system ready to go. I knew there would be changed required to migrate from PHP4 to PHP 5 and read the official PHP site, searched many forums, and google searches, called AppleCare but none knows what to do. I used an editor and there are 276 open brackets and 276 close brackets. If you have made the same migration without difficulty please let me know. Maybe I just need to start again!

Well, I don't think the code is too messy except for the globals I use.
It is. The point of this function is beyond elusive given the number of side effects it seems to induce. Everything in it could be reduced to one or two lines, but odds are good it shouldn't even exist in the first place.
I just use the same set of globals for all functions so that these variables are readily available everywhere in the program without having to think about it.
That's a very common beginner tactic which is unfortunately very prevalent in publicly distributed PHP projects due to the fact that many of them are written by beginners. I'd highly recommend you start thinking about it if you want to get anywhere.
They are all constants once they have been set initially.
    http://us2.php.net/manual/en/function.define.php
Like $query is set only once when the program picks it up from a $GET statement.
And I'll bet you're not sanitizing that query string at all before passing it along to mySQL.
This leaves two questions. Do you think I should treat every function as a separate file and have the mainline bring them in as "included code". There are 126 functions.
Refactoring should improve the organization, performance and readability of your code according to some logical criteria. Simply putting each function in its own file accomplishes none of these things.
(I have also written a 6000 line program as a MySQL data processor to make it easier for my wife to manipulate the data in dozens of tables without having to keep track of all the unique keys. So this will be quite a big job.) If so I would appreciate a quick tip about how to do that in PHP. Other pre-processing I do with Applescript.
Why didn't you just install phpMyAdmin?
Second, goes back to my initial question. This parsing problem only appeared after switching to PHP 5.2.2 with MySQL. Could this weird behavior be caused by some setting in the PHP.ini or httpd.conf or my.conf files and if so what would I change. The fact that this has not been suggested on this forum makes me think it is not a config. problem. That in itself is useful information.
Probably not, but who knows what other nightmares might be lurking in this file. Did you use short tags like <? ?> or something?

  • Will Aperture run under OSX Server?

    Greetings,
I am somewhat hardware constrained at the moment, and the best platform I have for running Aperture is currently running OS X Server (10.4). It is very lightly loaded, but it would be very disruptive to change it over to client. Does anyone know if Apeture will run on Server?
    Thank's.

Yup - I know that servers shouldn't be run as workstations. However, hardware constraints mean that a light-duty server might need to be pressed to run Aperture for a while.
Also - I know it shouldn't matter (as OSX and OSX Server are really not different OS's, but that OSX Server is just a superset of OSX), however that doesn't mean that Apeture doesn't check when it starts, etc.

  • 30" Cinema Display OSX Server

I dual boot OSX 10.4.4 and OSX Server 10.4.4 for testing purposes and recently got a 30" Cinema display. My G5 would not boot with the new required video card (NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra). I tried installing the driver for it from the CD that came with the display but it says it requires 10.3.5 or higher and would not install. Does anyone have any idea how I can make this work in server. It works great in OSX 10.4.4, just not in server.
    Kerry

So I installed the card into another G5, a DP 2.0GHz/2GB/160GB running OS 10.4.8 and was able to boot up to 1280x800 resolution, and after installing driver from ATI CD, achieved the maximum 2560x1600 resolution.
    Success! (So I thought.)
Because I thought the problem was the ATI web drivers, so per Malcolm's suggestion I did an archive/install on the original G5, software updates (had to reinstall Adobe CS 2, Suitcase, Quark, what a pain), then installed the card, and it still won't boot pass the blue screen, which was the issue before the archive/install.
I'm stumped, does anyone have any ideas?
