Xserve running 10.4.x reverted to 10.3???

I have an XSERVE that was originally purchased with OS X (10.3) in 2005. Within 6 months, we upgraded to Tiger and have continually kept the software updates up, ending up at 10.4.x.
A few days ago, I had to Remote Desktop in to troubleshoot an issue with MySQL socket errors. I got the standard 10.4 login screen, and tried to fire up both Server Admin and Workgroup Admin (just to review). Trying to open both applications gave me a variation of this error (paraphrased): "Can not run [Server Admin] in this version of Mac OS X."
Thinking there might be an account/privilege problem, I logged out intending to log in as root. As soon as the login screen popped back up, I was surprised to see that it looked like the old 10.3 login window (populated with a list of all account names and icons). I logged in only to find that I could still not run those admin applications.
I logged back out, quitting Remote Desktop to try "clearing" whatever the issue might be, if it wasn't server based. After that point I could no longer see the server showing up as available. It appears as "offline," and returns the Mac OS X version as 10.3. It also returns the IP as 0.0.0.0, even though I can still access the website on that server using the internal 192.168.x.x address, or the external IP address. I can also still mount the shared volumes from networked computers, using AFP and Samba, so it appears to be functional in most ways.
The big issues are:
1) I need to use ARD to troubleshoot the MySQL issue, but do not have any sign that it is possible. I tried name based connections and IP based scanner connections...no luck either way.
2) Why would the OS X version apparently revert from 10.4.x to 10.3? I don't know if this could have been related to low disk space (at that moment 16GB free out of 1.2 TB, which has been remedied to 50GB free temporarily), or if it is something else entirely. I am continually moving data to another volume, so I may be at 150GB+ free later today.
I called Apple Care, but found I have no support contract as of April. However, one tech said reversion to 10.3 was "impossible". Another said he'd never see it, but that an old .plist/config file may be to blame, however, he recommended posting here. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

No secondary OS on any volumes. I decided to remove the FC card connecting the XSERVE to the XRAID just to pop the video card back into that slot. The machine comes up into 10.3 still, I can't run any server admin items. I started it back up from the install DVD to check what Disk Utilities might reveal.
Apparently I have disk issues on the startup disk (a RAID 5 array). It gets through about 75% of the check before this comes up:
Checking volume bitmap.
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair.
Checking volume information.
Invalid volume free block count.
(It should be 45613367 instead of 45574565)
The volume RAID needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
1 HFS volume checked.
Volume needs repair
Running a "Repair Disk" afterward leads to the same result (Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.) without resolving the problem.
I thought I might take the OS from its 10.3 to Leopard Server, but seeing disk issues makes me think I should take care of this before attempting an upgrade of any kind.
How serious is this, and if Disk Utility can't fix it, is there another way to address the problem?
Thanks.

  • Disk image mounting and disk utility oddities on Xserve running OS X Server

I continue to run into an odd problem on one of my server setups. It is a 1.33 GHZ Xserve running OS X Server 10.4.11. There are four ATA drive installed (two of which are mirrored using Softraid 3.6.6). There are a total of 6 Firewire drives on the Firewire 800 Bus. Three of those are used for sharing out files and the other three are for various backups.
What happens is that I sometimes run into an issue where dmg files will not mount. There are no error messages and nothing in the log, they just don't open. Likewise I am unable to launch Disk Utility, it just spins and spins never displaying the drives, again nothing in the logs, no crashreporter. I have also found out that the same thing happens in System Profiler when I try to get a list of drives on either the ATA bus or the Firewire bus. Mind you they all show up on the desktop. Likewise I have had no luck getting them to list or run permissions or the like from the diskutil commandline. Now I am able to mount actual drives. When I swap out the offsite backup drive it mounts the new drive just fine. However... when I eject the drive and it has disappeared from the desktop and then I remove it... I get the removal error.. you didn't put the drive away properly message.
Now there are no disk related events showing up anywhere in the logs. The only other oddity that I can see is that my rsync backups tend to generate a ton of zombie processes. I get zombies of cron, sh, rsync, and mail.
It is just a pretty straightforward shell script
    /usr/local/bin/rsync -E --archive -eahfs --delete /Volumes/Files/Shared\ Items/ /Volumes/Backup\ Files/Shared\ Items/
Running in cron with it set to email the logs.
Now this does all clear up when I reboot the server... but it also doesn't reboot cleanly. It closes down all of the applications, login window and the like and then hangs on the shut down portion. Eventually I have to power it off manually. I've done the normal Volume checking on the main drives and they come up with 0 errors.
Hoping someone might have some ideas before I end up having to backup and reinstall the whole thing.

Also when I try to open the disk image file I get the following error in the log.
xserve kernel[0]: disk10s10: media is not present.

  • Unable to connect to file shares on xserve running 10.3.9

I just inherited a client that is running two xserves running 10.3.9. The servers are running workgroup manager/open directory. One server was out of commision due to a hardware issue. Users are divided equally on the two servers. The servers are only running OD and file sharing.
Any users who have their home directories on server A are able to connect to AFP shares fine. Any users who have their home directories on server B cannot connect to the AFP shares. When I look in the Server Admin program it does not have AFP even listed. And if I run disk repair utilities it says "AFP/appletalk listener not enabled because appletalk is off".
How do I turn this on if it is not listed as a check box?

  • Xserve running Windows Server in a VM

    Hi Guys,
We're looking to completely replace 4 servers, 2 are windows servers and the 2 are linux servers. We require to keep running those windows services for clients for now. Can Xserve run Windows Server in a VM properly?

I don't know why any small shop would buy a Windows box to run Windows.
It can be done better on the Mac with virtualization.
    Read this link:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2417389&start=0&tstart=45
I'm 145 days of uptime with a 2008 Xserve 2x3.0GHz/12GB/3x1TB/10.6.3/Parallels 5.x running four W2K3 VM's and one NT4 VM. The setup is 2x1TB software RAID-1 in Bay 2/3 with a third 1x1TB in Bay 1, and a 1TB 2.5" USB drive hanging off the back. Utilization with 10 clients is <10%. Yawn.
Scheduled SuperDuper flings the Bay2/3 1TB RAID over to the internal 1TB in Bay 1 and the USB at night giving my a 1 day stale backup of the running VM's.
I can pull the USB out, plug it into my 15" i7, double click on the VM's and run the whole office.
The Parallels Transporter app can often be used to pull your entire server over into the virtual environment on the Mac, so your clients don't even know anything happened.
You will need legit/licensed/bonafide Windows with keys to do this, as Windows will recognize that the hardware has changed and want to be re-activated.
Get Parallels, dump your Windows boxes and don't look back.
If this is your first Xserve though, be prepared.
    It's loud and hot.

  • Distributing OS X 10.8 Updates with Xserve running 10.6.8?

    Hello All,
Is it at all possible to distribute Mountain Lion updates via our Xserve running 10.6.8?  We are currently distributing updates for previous OS X releases via this server, including Lion.
Is it required to have Mountain Lion Server to distribute updates to ML machines?  Or can these updates be pooled in our current Software Update repository? We currently only have one Mountain Lion machine for testing purposes, but this will impact how we move forward.

For clarification the Server is running 10.6.8 intentionally for compatibility with essential software for our business. We are not specifically looking to upgrade the server to Mountain Lion.  Predominantly we would simply like to direct each client machine towards the server to receive softwre updates as we do with the Snow Leopard and Lion machines.
I am simply asking if ML software updates can be added to the Xserve's software update service as opposed to having to run a separate ML server for ML clients.

  • Can an xserve running 10.5.8 handle clients machines running 10.8.3

I have an xserve running 10.5.8.  We got three new machines running 10.8.3.  None of the programs on the client machines want to open, iphoto, mail, contact etc.

Just an FYI for anyone who might be searching for this solution. I recently discovered that the NSF share fix works also on a 10.6.8 OD server with OS X 10.8 clients using network homes, to resolve write to network application compatibility issues.

  • No Memory Status on XServes Running Leopard Client

I am currently netbooting 10.5.6 client on a slew of XServes and using Server Monitor on an old G5 to ensure that all the hardware is OK. In Server Monitor, I am able to view the status of all the usual items (fan speed, temperature, etc) except for the memory status. I am able to view the memory status on the two XServes running 10.5.6 Server, so I'm inclined to believe that this is a difference between the client and server OS.
How can I enable memory monitoring on the XServes running 10.5.6 Client?

Yeah, I was afraid that would be the case. It's actually not just the memory, but network and some other stuff as well (I'm not as interested in those things, so I forgot to mention them!). From what I can tell, without running server, you are only able to get the status of items via ipmi.
Does anybody know, exactly, what monitors the memory in server or if there is any other way to tell when the memory starts throwing errors? I don't need the fancy-schmancy gui, just some way to tell that there is a problem while the machine is up.

  • Server Monitor on Xserve running Client OS

I have an Xserve running the regular client OSX (Filemaker Server, didn't see the point in installing the full Server OS). Is there any way to get Server Monitor running? I would like to be able to keep an eye on the hardware functions.

Is there any way other than loading Mac OS X Server, you mean? Not directly.
You could enable and use the [SNMP daemon within the Leopard Mac OS X client|http://www.bynkii.com/archives/2007/12/aprimer_to_snmp_on_mac_os_x1.html], but that won't give you the Server Monitor interface.
Or you could see if the [Lithium software|http://lithiumcorp.com] is sufficient for your needs.
Or you could load the 10-client Mac OS X Server distribution, which has the monitoring stuff baked in.

  • EFI firmware update 1.1 installation on Intel Xserve running 10.5.3

When I recently attempted to install EFI firmware update 1.1 on an Intel Xserve running MacOSX 10.5.3, the software installer indicated that the computer did not need this update. However, the machine's current boot ROM version (XS11.0080.B01) is earlier than that apparently associated with the new firmware (XS21.006C.B06). Is this to be expected?

I'm having the same issue on both my late 2006 Intel Xserves (firewire port on the front). The 2007 Intel XServe (USB port on the front) updated just fine with SU. So I tried copying the app over from the Utilities folder on the new one but wouldn't run on the older Xserves.
Maybe the older ones don't require the update?

  • Two Xserves running 10.5 Server and setting up DNS...

    Hello.
I have two Xserves (a G5 and a new Intel), both with fresh installs of 10.5 Server on them.
Xserve #1 not going to be hosting any external services (FTP, web, email) and only housing internal, mission critical & confidential data (the server is set up with a mirror RAID on the OS drive as well as mirror RAID on the storage drives + nightly tape backups for offsite storage). Right now there are no plans for enabling iCal on this server as we're trying to keep the server as basic as possible (as we can afford zero downtime on this server), but if the initial setup of 10.5 requires configuration at first run to allow this type of thing, I'd like to deal with it now so as to keep my options open (as I know iCal on 10.5 requires Open Directory enabled).
Xserve #2 is going to host FTP (for external clients) and internal file sharing for the design/production department (basically, for transferring files back and fourth between departments, so no data via this share will be "critical" as it's only temporarily on the server and will always exist in other locations). Even though this server will not host "critical" data, it will share the same backup/RAID scheme as Xserve #1.
So, I'm curious as to how I set up DNS in this situation (so we can associate a domain name to our static IP address). We already have our main domain setup via 3rd-party hosting service (for web & email as we do not want to bring these services in-house), but we're purchasing a second domain that will be associated with company (via a static IP, so we can give a domain name instead of IP address for people needing to connect to the FTP server, make it easier for employees to remember the address for remote connections, etc.).
Because Xserve #2 is going to be hosting FTP, would it make sense to setup DNS on this server and not set it up on Xserve #1? Also, and this could just be me being paranoid, but because Xserve #1 will be housing "critical & confidential" data I want to eliminate as much contact with the outside world as possible with this server, so this is another reason I feel Xserve #2 should have DNS running instead.
Oh, and not sure if this makes any difference, but between the WAN and the LAN is a SonicWALL firewall and currently it deal with port forwarding, etc. depending on what services are being requested from the WAN (ie. remote machine connections, FileMaker remote connections, etc.).
    Any advice would be appreciated!
    Regards,
    Kristin.

There's a couple of things in your post I don't understand:
the server is set up with a mirror RAID on the OS drive as well as mirror RAID on the storage drives
How are you doing this? Both XServes support only three internal drives and two mirrors require 4 drives. Where does the fourth drive come into play?
I'm curious as to how I set up DNS in this situation
There are numerous ways of doing this, but with a single static IP address your best bet is to leave DNS where it is - managed by your hosting provider. Just add a record in the domain zone (e.g. ftp.yourdomain.com) that has the IP address of the public interface your SonicWall firewall. You don't need a separate domain for this. You also don't need to setup internal DNS for this (although you may need internal DNS if you're running Open Directory.
Because Xserve #2 is going to be hosting FTP, would it make sense to setup DNS on this server and not set it up on Xserve #1?
Assuming you're referring to setting up a DNS server - use them BOTH. Make one of the servers the primary server (I'd pick the internal-only server for this) and set the other server to be a slave (so it copies all the zone data from the primary server). That way you have a replica of the data to provide additional resilience.

  • Best way to sync sharepoints on two different xServes running Tiger Server?

Situation: I have two xServes. Both are Dual 1.0 GHz G4/1 GB RAM/Mac OS X Server Tiger 10.4.x. One xServe is located here in Florida office. Other (backup) xServe is colocated in California. Each xServe has three sharepoints. I need the Florida sharepoints to sync with their respective California sharepoints. Meaning, I want as often as possible, the California sharepoints to be a mirror of the Florida sharepoints. Best scenario is the 'sync' runs every 24 hours, or more often, if it won't effect day to day activity and production on xServe(s) and network(s).
What is the best way to do this?
Also, is it ok that the Florida xServe is version 10.4.7, while the California xServe is 10.4.4 (the difference in versions is for a reason)?
Thanx in advance to any and all who can help.

    Hi NASFMeric,
Carbon Copy Cloner uses psync, which actually works pretty well. However, the greatest number of features in this kind of tool are found in rsync. Since Apple's rsync handles resource forks, even the psync man page suggests using it. Beware though, there are several bugs in Apple's rsync.
Fortunately, not only has Quinton Dolan kept track of these bugs, he's fixed them. There are several "fixed" rsyncs for Mac OS X on the web but Quinton addresses so many issues, he may have fixed them all. He also patched the latest version of rsync. His discussion and fixed rsync can be found on his page, Fixing rsync on MacOS X 10.4 (Tiger). Tests on Apple's UNIX discussion failed to find fault with it but maybe someone did (probably Quinton) because he regularly updates it. Thus, I imagine he supports it as well. He's very sharp, appears to have done an impeccable job and I highly recommend his solution.

  • XServe Running Tiger, not Server Version?

Can we install the standard (non-server) version of Tiger on an XServe? We use to render video and run video at concerts and are having lots of render crashes under Final Cut as well as some tasks apparantly running in the background which is making full screen live video playback glitch every second or so. Running the same tasks on a tower is fine so we thought it might be OSX Server. Suggestions?

    I'm with William here.
Running Mac OS X client on an XServe certainly isn't supported, but that means you can't turn to Apple for help if something breaks.
There's absolutely nothing in Mac OS X client that says "oh, I'm running on an XServe so I'd better stop right now", and there's nothing in the hardware that says it has to run Mac OS X Server - heck, you can install Linux on an XServe if you really want to, just don't expect Apple to help you afterwards.
You will lose the server-specific features, admin tools, etc., etc., but other than that there is no reason why you can't run Mac OS X client.

  • Help! - Xserve running Mac OS X 10.6 Server keep hanging!

I have a situation here where the Xserve I set up running Mac OS X 10.6 Server keeps hanging after a while. I have re-installed from the scratch thinking it was the third party software I used in importing users and groups but the problem is still there. I checked the error log of directory services and the only error I can see is "Network Transition Occurred". I read some fix on the internet as regards to the spotlight re-indexing being the likely cause. I have enabled the privacy setting of spotlight with the hope that this will stop. I am still waiting because I implemented this some couple of minutes ago. Do anyone know the solution to this issue in case the spotlight setting does not work. I am kinda frustrated with this issue.

    There are many possible issues.
Network transition, to me, sounds like there is something happening that is changing the network settings. Disable any wifi if you can. Check and double check all network cables, static IP addresses, DNS, make sure there are no rouge DCHP servers on the network, or multiple routers, etc...
I would check to see if there are networking issues.
Also, if you're running Time Machine (TM), try turning it off for a few days (of course, have a good solid backup actively running, just not TM, which isn't really the best for a server anyways for various reasons.
    Cheers,
    Daniel

  • G5 xserve running Server 10.3.9 fails to upgrade to server 10.5

We have an Xserve Dual G5 XServe with xserve 10.3.9 that was setup out of the box about 4 years ago. We purchased Server 10.5 for an upgrade. After making a full backup we booted from the 10.5 DVD, We are able to click through and select the volume to upgrade, it starts to do the upgrade states it is copying files for a couple of seconds then stops and states unable to install on this volume, you may need to run disk utilities to run this upgrade. I have run the disk utilities, repaired permissions, repaired the disk (neither stated problems) tried again with the same result. I have 2 drives in a mirror configuration that the partition is on. Any thoughts.

    Hi Sean Clark4-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
How much free space on the destination volume?
You may need to create the partition using 10.5. I would suggest a full backup to an external drive or two before attempting this upgrade anyway, and you could restore the information once the upgrade is complete.
