X11/xterm on 10.5.8 server broken?

I upgraded from my MacPro server from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 recently. Since then, X11, or more precisely xterm, appear to be broken. When I click on the X11 app in the dock, it takes much longer to come up with a terminal than it did under 10.4. Furthermore, it does not show me any of the options in the top bar such as
Applications Edit Window Help
These option are now all gone with 10.5.8. This means that I can't open a second xterm. The xterm app bounces for a long time in the dock and I can see another app that has opened up called Xquartz. Usually, I can't quit xterm even by clicking on the right circle in the top left and have to 'force quit' it because it says that 'Application not responding'.
Any ideas as to what's going on?

Reinstalling X11 from scratch fixed the problem. Not sure what went wrong during initial install.

I have browsed through a number of the threads posted in this forum and haven't found an answer to my question. I'm affraid that it might be because it is too simple of a question.
I am not an avid UNIX user. I have learned pretty much only what I need in order to login to and run applications from a remote UNIX server. Buy the way, I think it's great that I don't need to by any third-party software to do this.
Anyway, all I would like to do is change the size and location of the default X11 xterm window. I did this once before a few of years ago when I first installed OS X. I've just recently whipped out my hard disk and upgraded to a fresh install of OS 10.4. Now I can't remember how to do this simple task.

Easy day - the answer has three components (assuming you don't want to mess with Xresources which can change the default values of xterm settings globally instead on the command line when calling xterm)
1) you need to supply arguments to xterm to make it get non-default settings. I use "xterm -geom 105x28 -sb -sl 2500 -bg khaki3 -fg black -cr white" and let the system position each window offset from the last.
2) When the X11 app starts, it runs your initialization file ~/.xinitrc or if it is not present, /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc. If you want all users on the mac to get thechange then edit the line in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc. Otherwise, copy it to your home directory and make the change for your user only.
3) Optionally, you can customize the Applications menu for X11 to call xterm with the same commands as your xinitrc file (either global or specific to your user).
Since you asked about positioning, the geom parameter also takes an offset - try -geom 105x28+20-150
In either case, read up on the man pages man X and man xterm for details on what options do what for for all X11 window applications in general and xterm in specific. Once you are done playing and found the settings you prefer, make the changes in 2 and 3 as you prefer.

Connection to server broken: non-chunked HTTP read lost connection

A java applet popped this up on my screen, no idea where to look on my machine - it's only the second time its happened in many weeks but I would like to be able to interact with the cause.
Java was installed from Sun's download in June 2006 on Windows Adv. Server. MS auto update and defender currently active.

some program is trying to get some update from its server and so it is trying to connect to its server but either you don't have internet connection or it can have low speed, because of this reason some program show this error "Connection to server broken: non-chunked HTTP read lost connection". so you have to stop the scheduling of that program.

X11 / xterm won't even launch anymore

I was using X11 with the minor glitches (i.e. cannot move x11 windows to secondary display). For some reason, x11 stopped working altogether today. I go to /Applications/Utilities/X11 and nothing happens.
I checked /var/log/system.log and it has the following errors:

Coincidentally, X11 stopped working after I ran System Update to install the Quicktime and iTunes updates today.
Anyone else start having this problem?

I was checking the boards and found someone who said their org.x.X11.plist file was not being installed after they had deinstalled 10.5 X11, installed 10.4 X11, and went back to 10.5 X11.
I had did that earlier and wasn't having problems, but I went ahead and pulled that file from another 10.5 computer and copied that over to the affected Macbook.
Problem solved.

X11/xterm: can't launch from terminal in Tiger 10.4.11 PPC

I have set up my .profile PATH so that 'which' finds xterm via the terminal command line, but invoking 'xterm' gets the response:

What do I need to configure so that the command 'xterm' starts X11 and opens an xterm window?
xterm runs fine from the drop down when I run X11.app
There are no DISPLAY options set anywhere.
Does this work in Tiger? (It does for me in Leopard and SL)

Tiger will NOT auto launch X11 when you attempt to run an X-Windows based program.
Leopard and Snow Leopard will auto launch X11 when you attempt to run a X-Windows program.
You could change your .profile to
open -a X11 /usr/X11/bin/xterm

IChat Server broken after 10.6.3 Update

Apache err log on http server *broken pipe* each time a message comes thru

I've noticed on our http server, each time a message comes through for B2B we consistently get the following entries in the Apache error log:
(32)Broken pipe: MOD_OC4J_0087: Got an unexpected error while calling send() to send a message to oc4j and the error code is 32.
MOD_OC4J_0053: Failed to call network routine to send out an ajp13 buffer message to oc4j.
MOD_OC4J_0027: Failed to send out an ajp13 message to oc4j.
MOD_OC4J_0026: Failed to marshal a request to ajp13 message headers or send them to the web container.
Any idea what's causing this? Everything seems to be going through OK.
I'm trying to track down an issue that occurred over the weekend. I don't think this is related, but I do need to address it.

Here is my 2 cents.
Oracle recommends you set the Oc4jCacheSize parameter to reduce the occurrences of MOD_OC4J_0087 and
related errors in your Apache error logs. To change this parameter, follow these steps:
1. Stop the OPMN processes on the middle tier.
2. On the middle-tier computer, open a terminal window and go to $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/conf.
3. Enter the following command:
cp mod_oc4j.conf mod_oc4j.conf.pre3604573
4. Edit the mod_oc4j.conf file by adding the following line after the </IfModule> line, but before the
Oc4Jmount /j2ee/* line:
Oc4jCacheSize 0
5. Start the OracleOPMN processes on the middle tier.
I would still suggest to analyze the stack trace further for exact issues.

GUI [xterm/xwindows] Console for VM Server

Hi,
I would like to use my VM Server as a standalone machine independently and directly, without having to go to another physical machine for ssh -X / VNC sessions. However, when I boot the VM Server, the console I get is a non-graphic one as opposed to what I get when I boot, say, OEL 4.5 or 5.2 server. So I am not able to initiate any xterm/vnc connections to any guest within the host.
How do I install/implement a GUI interface like KDE or GNOME in a VM Server so that I get a graphic console as I boot the machine. Maybe if you could show a pointer I would much appreciate the help. Thanks.

You can't, or at least, you shouldn't -- Oracle VM Server is a bare-metal virtualization platform. It is not designed to be used in a workstation-like environment and you will find that if you run a graphical desktop (GNOME/KDE) that you may negatively impact the performance of your guests.
However, it is possible. The Dom0 is essentially Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 (32-bit). If you have enough space on your / partition (which you do not by default) you could install all the RPMs required to get a graphical desktop to work. This is not a straight-forward process, though. The simplest way is probably to create a custom Yum repository from the OEL5 media and point your Dom0 to use that repository.

Xorg-server broken after upgrade to 1.6.3.901-1

After upgrading to xorg-server 1.6.3.901-1 and rebooting the computer xorg-server respawned repeatedly very fast and I was unable to exit except for pressing the power button (I had runlevel 5 set in /etc/inittab). Then I set the runlevel to 3 in /etc/inittab (using a liveCD), logged in and typed startx. The terminal became black except for a grey cursor in the top left of the screen and I was unable to exit except for pressing the power button.
The previous version of xorg-server is no longer in the pacman cache because I cleared it.

AFP login via Kerberos from 10.5 clients to 10.4 server broken

I don't know if this is connected to the problem laid out by William W. Higgins in [Open Directory or LDAP Problem with 10.5 Client and 10.4 Server|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2163645&tstart=0]. The symptoms are... somewhat different, so I'll start a new thread.
We've got a small office with a bunch of 10.5.8 clients, a couple of 10.6 clients, one lone Windows 2000 client, and a number of remote users. I've had my OS X Server 10.4.11 machine (a PowerMac G5 single 1.8GHz, fwiw) working happily as an OD Master for the past few weeks. It's mostly a file server and a back DNS server for our public web site—we have web service turned on, but it's mostly to allow remote users to download files (or upload via WebDAV). The server has a secondary NIC that's hooked up to the cable modem in the DMZ. Everything else is behind the modem's NAT.
We've had some things show up on the logs that are making us want to tighten security, both in the LAN and over the internet. We've gone to HTTPS for the web server and are using TLS/SSL for the PureFTPd server. We closed the SMB ports on the external firewall—something we should have done years ago, probably.
I wanted to switch the AFP service over to Kerberos authentication only. However, when I make that change in Admin Server>AFP>Settings>Access, none of the clients can log on; they get an error reading:
+*Connection Failed*+
+There was an error connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address and try again.+
+If you are unable to resolve the problem, contact your network administrator.+
Then, after you click on OK, you get the following:
+Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unknown error occurred.+

That code seems to indicate a Kerberos problem.
And when I try to log on as a network user from one of the clients, I get this message:
*+You are unable to log in to the user account "user" at this time+*

Server Admin shows OD and Kerberos as up and running. The Password Service log has the following entry:

So the log-on didn't go through Kerberos, for some reason, though it's been working fine that way for weeks.
I tried using +sso_util configure -r KERBEROS.REALM -a diradmin afp+ to make sure that single sign-on was running for AFP. No change.
I can use +dscl -u username -p localhost read /LDAPv3/Users/username+ and read the information on the user's home directory.
I can use /System/Library/CoreServices/Kerberos (or Ticket Agent) to request and receive a ticket. (Side note: does Kerberos really not allow login by secondary short names??? That's a pain! If I add principals for the secondary short names, will it authenticate correctly to the proper account???)
FTP is working. Web authentication is working. If I turn Kerberos authentication off for AFP, everything else seems to return to normal... but then the passwords are passed as cleartext, which isn't acceptable.
So... Is this a bug? Is this a conflict with PureFTPd? Am I doing something wrong?

The lack of dictionary file I believe is a minor error, right?
The bad news is that a) clients are no longer able to receive tickets (+*Kerberos Error* Configuration does not specify default realm+) and b) clients can't log on at all—not even via the Finder>Go>Connect to Server... command. Not even when you use the static IP address of the server rather than the DNS name.
DNS still seems to be working. I can get reverse lookup:

(The DNS also checks out from the clients.)
But.... fubar.
When I run +kadmin.local listprincs+, it lists all of the users and computers I've added—plus a couple that I don't recognize but that seem to be the products of bound computers (the names are along these lines, rather than the actual computer names for the clients: +LKDC:SHA1.59B886209B027XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX$@CERBERUS.LIMBO.JCF.ORG+). But when I run +kadmin.local list_policies *+, it just pops down to the next prompt. There don't seem to be any policies defined. That can't be right, can it????
Further weirdness: I tried rebinding the client that I'm working from (an iMac running 10.6.2), also using the IP address. It goes through the binding process, but no dice—when I try to run System/Library/CoreServices/Kerberos.app, I still can't get a ticket. And the weird bit is, there doesn't seem to be a /Library/Preferences/edu.mit.Kerberos plist file on the client. Well, no wonder the client's Kerberos app can't authenticate the realm—there's no local file in which the data is stored!
I should note that when I rebooted this morning, I first booted to the backup drive and ran Disk Utility; I repaired permissions—more than once—and repaired the disk directory as well. Perhaps I have confused the **** out of it. Though how the permissions got fouled in the first place is beyond me.
I have other things to do (as it says in my profile, I'm the local IT guy by default)—though everyone where I work needs this problem solved.
At this point my options seem to be:
1.) Back up, demote, promote and reload the OD server.
2) Reinstall from scratch.
If anyone has any suggestions in the next hour or so, I'd love to hear them!

Software Update Server Broken

I've been struggling with the Software Update Server service on a particular server. With other servers that I've encountered this problem with, I've always deleted the contents of
/etc/swupd/swupd.plist
and
/usr/share/swupd/htm/.
This has always worked to get it running again.
This has not worked with this server. I really want to avoid an Archive and Install, especially since the install discs this client has won't boot the G5 that's functioning as the server. It makes for too much hassle to use an older Mac to use as the install host.
Any more suggestions?

Wipe the whole /usr/share/swupd directory contents.
rm -rf /usr/share/swupd

VPN Server broken with Windows after upgrade from Tiger.

Hey there
I use Tiger 10.4 Server on a PowerMac G4.
It has two network interfaces, one public facing with it's own static IP, and the other internal facing.
The VPN service works perfectly, and allows people to connect via L2TP and assignes them an IP on the internal facing subnet, and allows OS X and Windows clients to connect.
However after upgrading to Leopard, only Mac clients can connect, all the Windows clients connect, and although they get an IP and are able to ping destinations, attempts to connect to these destinations (some of which are web apps on port 80, others are file servers running Samba), they just sit waiting for ever.
I've experimented with this problem, and it appears to be a problem with MTU and packet fragmentation, however these settings appear to be the same between Tiger, which worked, and Leopard which does not work.
Does anyone have any experience with the new VPN Server in Leopard, and can offer me any advice on how to fix this problem? I'm currently downgraded to Tiger again until a fix can be found.

I had the same issue, among others, but I finally got everything to work eventually. It seems that if the IP range of the client connecting to VPN is in the same range of the server LAN, there will be connectivity issues, whether it be pcs and/or macs not being able to connect. The following set up got my VPN services working:
1. Get DNS and Open Directory working properly. When I did an upgrade, the Server Admin updated my zone files with a curious extra space, which killed DNS. For example, I had the name server as ns.company.private., but in the files it would say ns. company.private everywhere! I've been reading about various bugs in upgrading DNS, so I think it's best just to start DNS from scratch. 2. Once you have Open directory users and dns working properly, then set up VPN. Give a unique IP range to the internal network (192.168.7.1/24) that other networks will not emulate. If you use 192.168.1.1, you will likely run into issues. You can always test this method out by changing the IP range from a remote location and trying to get in this way instead of changing the server. Also, be aware that if you use Gateway Assistant within NAT, it will automatically give you a 192.168.1.1/24 range, at least that's been my experience, and this always killed VPN for me. I would set up NAT manually to avoid problems.
3. Ensure that the DNS information under the Client Information tab is correct. For my server I have 192.168.9.1 as the nameserver, and company.private as the search domain. Then set up routing tables. Mine are 192.168.0.0:255.255.0.0 private and 0.0.0.0:0.0.0.0 public.
Also, when you restart the server, stop and restart VPN services, as there is some talk about the Tiger bug still being around, where VPN services are messed up upon startup. This all worked for me and a couple others that had similar server set ups. Hopefully this will work for you.

ICal server broken after SSL renewal

SSL was about to expire so I setup a new SSL. Assigned it to all of the services requiring the SSL. I can bind computers okay, but cannot authenticate to iCal or Addressbook server. The error states that it can see the caldav server, but the username or password is incorrrect. I've reset the user passwords and no go. It has to do something with the SSL, but can't figure out what. Any advice?

Finally found the error. Somehow a setting for Digest authentication had changed to
Calendar:Authentication:Digest:Qop = "auth"
after changing it back to
Calendar:Authentication:Digest:Qop = ""
everything works well again!

Nokia Messaging Hotmail server broken?

My push email has stopped working - this happened at the end of last week.
Is there a solution? Is the server down?
I am unable to sync, send, and receive...
I am using hotmail, a Nokia 5800, and I am located in the UK.

Hello All, I am upgrading my server this summer and since I am going to be re-installing everything I had the idea of separating the system using virtual machines.
Host System: (Media Center)
- MPD Music Daemon for Local Sharing Access.
- XBMC Media Server
- Plex Media Server (Option 1)
- SubSonic Streamer (Option 2)
- LXiMedia Server (Option 3)
- SSH Server
- Firewall
- Samba (Windows Networking)
- NFS (Linux Networking)
- Backup System
- Printer Server
Virtual Machine: (Web Server)
- NGINX or Apache Web Server (MySQL, PHP5, Python, Java)
- FTP Server (ProFTPd)
- Proxy Server (Squid)
- Cloud Services (OwnCloud?)
- Torrent Client (wTorrent)
- VPN Server
Are there any benefits to doing this? (Besides easy re-installation of the VM)
Should I separate the File Server Sections of the server as well?
Should I not even bother, because I would be limiting the resources of those VM's and Linux will put inactive processes to sleep anyway to open more memory for the ones that need it?
Better suggestions?

I currently do this with a CentOS/Xen hypervisor, about to rebuild the VM hardware and move to Citrix XenServer though.

All the usual benefits of virtualization. Less electricity usage, less heat and noise output.

Until recently I did this, but I've just bought myself a Synology NAS and using that for files now; 1) a NAS is designed to file share and I don't want to reinvent the wheel on that, and 2) it will be providing iSCSI storage for the new hypervisor/XenServer. Consolidation ftw!
