Yet another 10.4.7 update/webkit problem

Like many others, I've had some problems since doing the 10.4.7 update. As others have seen, I have problems with both Safari, Mail, and Widgets crashing almost immediately after launch. This seems to be a widespread but not universal problem, since a friend of mine updated to 10.4.7 with no problems. The error I get is the same as has been seen elsewhere:
<pre>Symbol not found: __ZN3KJS9ObjectImpC2Eb
Referenced from: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/WebCore.frame work/Versions/A/WebCore
Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/JavaScriptCor e.framework/Versions/A/JavaScriptCore</pre>
In case people here haven't seen it, there are some articles at MacFixit and a suggested workaround, which involves installing the opendarwin Webkit. I'm hesitant to do that, since, as MacFixit points out, I don't know if this rolls back the security updates put in by Apple. I may look to see if the specific missing object can be restored.
I'm wondering if those who are not having problems have different settings for using javascript on Safari and Mail. Anyway, I hope we see another update soon for those of us having problem.
Powerbook G4 (aluminum)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Yes. After fixing permissions. What I'm wondering is if the update installed a corrupted JavaScriptCore somehow the first time, after which the second update might have skipped that file as already being present.
The second time I ran the updater from the desktop (after downloading) it seemed to execute awfully quickly. Looking at the install log at /var/log/install.log, it looks like different things got logged the first time and the second (and third) time I tried redoing the update.
Since some people are having no problems and others are having different problems, I'm also guessing that there are different versions of something that gets installed based on the updater detecting the model of mac that you have. There's a line in the log that reports details about my laptop.
I just figured out that I can get access to my old mail by telling Mail.app to go offline before it crashes. So it's the checking mail that causes the crash...which makes sense if the problem is related to webkit.
I can get my new mail with Thunderbird, but I miss my smart mailboxes.

The thing is that I've read about chrooting, I did chroot following the steps described on the Wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Change_Root but I have a problem with pacman and it's that I can't use pacman on chroot, it says: command not found. I must've done something wrong but I have no clue.

    I've solved the mystery.
Well, I realised that I had another serious issue with filesystem (that was mentioned on the Archlinux's news https://www.archlinux.org/news/filesyst … equired-1/ and https://www.archlinux.org/news/the-lib- … a-symlink/ ) so I had to figure out which packages were using /lib to remove them. Also I had to disable pacman's signature checking system because as I said before it didn't seem to work.
After removing every package that happened to use /lib  at that time I eventually could perform the command "pacman -Syu" and later on "mkinitcpio -p linux" worked out.
    Thanks DSpider.

  • Yet another xfig 3.2.5-1 problem[Solved].

I have a fresh archlinux installation (a week ago). Everything went fine so far... but I have a problem with xfig.
When I try to open a .fig file that I had in my previous bluewhite64 installation (a slackware 64-bits port) I get the following error:
xfig3.2.5: X error trapped - error message follows:
    BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
    Request code: X_CreatePixmap
xfig: figure empty or not modified - exiting
    Aborted
I looked all over the archlinux site (Wiki and forums) and found some old-post about the problems with some fonts with xfig3.2.5 and that the best solution was to downgrade the package to version 3.2.4-10 (http://www.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch … 07441.html). In that site even the patch to apply to the pkgbuild can be extraxted. Now the problem is to get the corresponding PKGBUILD to patch. Any ideas?
Another workaround is to use the awesome site http://arm.nrk.cc/ and install the oldest possible version 3.2.4-11 (one more than the needed one). I thought that would work like a charm. But the following error appear when trying to run xfig 3.2.4-11
xfig: error while loading shared libraries: libXaw3d.so.8: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I checked the version and this is what I get:
    ldd `which xfig`
    libXaw3d.so.7 => /usr/lib/libXaw3d.so.7 (0x00007fdfb206a000)
I do not know what to do with this error. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Well. I guess machines have their days too.
Today when I was trying to reproduce the error in order to report correctly the bug, I reopened the file in question and I appeared to work like a charm. I tried to open the file menu and then the application ended suddenly and the console reported the following error.
    Warning: Actions not found: StartScroll
    xfig3.2.4: SIGSEGV signal trapped
xfig: figure empty or not modified - exiting
Since the figure now seemed to work I decide to give it a try again to the current xfig version just to see what happens... and guess what? I worked. Bot not like a charm.
I began to work on my project like usual with the file opened, I was able to export the file and everything looked fine. I rearrange the windows (I use awesome for mi WM) and the application ended with the following error.
xfig3.2.5: X error trapped - error message follows:
    BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
    Request code: X_CreatePixmap
xfig: figure empty or not modified - exiting

Resource id in failed request: 0x1801ea8
Serial number of failed request: 36968
Current serial number in output stream: 38962
I guess there is no reason now to post a bug since it is not reproducible now (even the last one about the WM).
Thanks a lot for your help!!!

    Deepak,
I don't get any other errors. I've written a simple application to learn how polling works. It displays the days of the week. The day changes every three seconds, starting with Sunday. The webpage polls for the day value every second. Polling stops when we reach Saturday. The webpage starts with Sunday displayed. Every second I can see the webpage update and a log message shows that the polling method was called and the method bound to the 'day' text field is called once after the polling method. Logging indicates the correct value changes but the webpage continues to display only Sunday. When the polling stops if I manually refresh the page it displays Saturday.
The following is my JSP code:
    <f:view>
         <afh:html>
         <afh:body>
              <af:poll id="resultsPoll" rendered="#{daysOfTheWeek.polling}"

  • Yet Another iPod Touch user with WIFI problem

I have Linksys WRT54GS wifi router setup at home. I use four notebooks, one mac mini and one mobile phone (Nokia N80) without any problem on my wifi network.
The only problem is with my brand new iPod Touch 16GB (firmware: 1.1.2 3B48b - no jailbreak). It always shows an error "Unable to join the network 'MY-SSID-NAME'". I have tried to change SSID, change security settings (WPA, WEP, no security, ...) - but nothing helped. All other devices (notebooks, macmini and phone) always worked like a charm.
iPod worked only once - the first time I used it (after buying). Since then it does not. I have tried all resets, Restore in iTunes, ...
I think it might be a bug in firmware. Please help someone.
BTW: How (an where) can I report a bug to Apple ?

Just like many others, I bought Ipod Touch in Christmas and felt frustrated about surfing the net. I have read many posts in the forum. And I have tried many methods suggested by others to try to figure out the problems. Finally I have solved the problem and I want to share some ideas with others.
    Steps of Checking:
    (1) Check whether you have a wireless network at home or at work. Check whether the network is security protected or not. If it is, better ask the admininistrator (at home, the admin should be the one who bought the wireless router.) for password.
    (2) Check the latest firmware upgrade for the wireless router (in my case, I use Linksys WRT54G. After I upgraded the firmware, my ipod touch could get the necessary IP from the router.)
    (3) For the wireless router, better broadcast the SSID for the first time so that the IPod Touch can find it easily. I use WPA2-Personal Encryption AES (though many buddies here point out that WEP, WPA or even no security is also okay). I even set the MAC filtering and the Ipod Touch still works fine!(though you need to input the MAC address of your Ipod Touch to the MAC filtering table in the admin page of your router. the MAC address of Ipod Touch can be found in the Ipod Touch general information. There is a string like XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
    (4) To mininimize the interference from neighbouring wireless networks, better try the connection near the wireless router.
    (5) If you have tried for several times and failed to connect, you may reset the router by powering off for 15 seconds and reset the network configuration of the Ipod.
I have used Compag IPAQ before and I must say that for those tiny toys with Wifi capability, the connection is not that stable. However, I find that using the Ipod Touch to watch Youtube video is very good and the speed is excellent!
The steps suggested above are not exclusive. There are too many factors which influence the performance of Wifi. Hope you will succeed and enjoy the Ipod Touch in the New Year 2008!

  • Yet Another iPad Wi-Fi Problem

So, I'm having the famous iPad Wi-Fi issue everyone else is. I've tried everything that people have said, yet YouTube rarely works. Some days, it works perfectly, though a little slow. Other days, like today, it doesn't work at all. What's the problem here?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

iTunes is a mess! It couldn't find it's own libraries and I was forced to create a new one. Now I don't know where my music is or if any's missing.

    columbus new boy wrote:
    How crap is that?
    It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.

  • Is this yet another problem with 7.5 or is it just me . . .

Upgrade seemed to be fine, at first . . . now I keep getting distortion on songs. It seems to be quite random and just because a song has been distorted when I've listened to it once doesn't mean it will be when I listen to it again! It's driving me insane. Is this yet another bug or have I done something wrong (apart from upgrading to 7.5).

    Hi Emlou,
If you have a Windows based operating system such as XP -
It seems to me that you are suffering what I am having the same problem with - the program takes up to much of your computer's processing usage. If you go into your task manager and watch performance as ITunes runs - you will see how much of the total computer usage it is taking at any given moment - that's why your songs are distorted, slowing, garbled, etc - the usage on mine spikes from 11% - 93% AT ANY GIVEN MINUTE! I have no idea why, but I have found that by going to your "Control Panel" and clicking on Quicktime you can adjust audio output to help. Click the audio tab, click Safe Mode Wavout only (checkbox) / Then adjust the "Rate" to 96kHz / Then adjust the "Size" to 16 bit. Close that and shut down and restart Itunes - it might help a little for you.
Maybe someone out there can help us find out why we are suffering with all the CPU usage trouble and how to adjust that spiking.
    Thanks!
    Paul

  • Yet another Mac Book Pro (A1211/2.33 GHz) freeze problem

    Hi everyone,
I have yet another freeze mystery, if people fancy having a crack at it.
I had this notebook for about 4 and a half years and it served me well until 2 months ago. It is a 15' MBP from December 2008 (A1211) with a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo and 2GB of RAM.
Now I constantly get lags or freezes while I am using it.It manifests itself via the beachball and a frozen screen. First, I thought it was the hard drive but I replaced it with a tested new one and I still get the same behaviour. The reason I thought it was the HD is that it seems to freeze often when there was a lot of access to HD or memory. For example, firefox would cause a freeze quite often when it was trying to access the cache or history. I get the same behaviour when trying indexing my music for the genius feature. Often when I close applications, it will halt the system for about 2 minutes.
I think the number of lags also correlates with temperature. I am pretty sure that the notebook's heat diffusion properties has deteriorated strongly over the past year as it seems to be using the fans a lot more extensively. The heatsink seems to get really hot these days as well. So my next step would be checking the thermal paste on the heat sink. Before I am going to do that, I want to consider any remaining options as dismantling the laptop up to the heatsink is a bit of a pain.
My gut feeling would be that it has to do either with the memory or maybe some 'bridge' that transfers the data between HD, GPU, CPU and memory. I am aware that bridge is the wrong word and I am simplifying the architecture of the mainboard too much, but I am sure you get what I mean. The data rate between some of those is inhibited.
The reason why I am saying some is that often the system seems overwhelmed by the amount of commands, just sits there and then resumes executing all of them as it had taken a break. This can be easily seen when streaming video in a web browser. I often get the beach ball and my whole screen freezes, but the movie, or at least the sound, keeps running in the background. After a while it usually resumes and shows the movie at the current playing position. Sometimes it doesn't recover, not even after 30 minutes and I have to switch it off.
I hope I provided enough information for you guys to have a think about this.
Any help in this matter would be gratefully appreciated.

Before re-installing the operating system, which might also work, I found this article helpful:
    http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/qt/Fix-Spod-How-To-Fix-A-Spinning-Pinwheel -Of-Death.htm
I've followed the directions since they seem to make sense and am waiting for the next Pinwheel of Death. They seem to be saying the same thing you are Chris, but ascribe the problem to 'permissions' which are fixable (gasp) via the OS disc utility.

Thank you wjsten for your soon reply. Unfortunately on these days I'm in a country that Apple don't have any retail store here and for sake of time I prefer to fix it myself to DHL it to the nearest country to use its warranty. Do you have any idea how can I fix it? Do you think it's a software issue?

  • My iPhone 4s is stuck in recovery mode after yet another failed update.

I had freed space, obviously not enough. I cannot understand why Apple could halt not the or prevent the update process if space is lacking, instead of turning the phone into a recovery mode brick. It gave the message that update failed, and went into recovery mode. Most times I update this happens. Usually I manage to get it to reset, and restore from an iTunes backup. Not this time. iTunes can see no phone. Off/on and home together do not reset.
I needed to get iOs 6.1.1 and lastly the most recent update. Given my bad experience of updates, I avoid them if I can.

Someone help, Is there something that can knock it out of Recovery Mode? It's possible with other phones, say Android phones to remove the battery, and also to update with problems every single time.
I'm changing phones. This has to be the forth time. Most other times iTunes found that the phone was in recovery mode and could return me to some default setting.

  • Yet another printing problem 'EOF' errors

This problem is probably both a Leopard and Adobe problem combined. It's a rather complicated problem, but the bottom line is that (to most printers) the jobs coming out of one of our Mac Pros cause the printers to crash and restart themselves giving an 'EOF Error (End of File)' on at least one of them. The problem also appears to affect PDF documents created in InDesign which will then cause the same errors on any computer it is printed from.
Things you may need to know and that I've already tried:
    • The same printers with the same drivers printing the same files will work on other Mac Pros of the same version with the same version of Leopard.
    • Using a generic driver will print properly, however this is not a workaround because we need duplexing provided by the driver and I'm not sure how this could fix the PDF problem.
    • Fonts have been disabled and checked with Font Doctor.
    • Starting up in 'Safe Mode' will allow printing, but without fonts or links on server volumes.
    • Switching the hard drive with another identical Mac Pro brought the problem with the HD, worked on other. In other words, the problem is definitely in the software and not a hardware problem.
    • Reset the printing system numerous times.
    • Re-installed the OS, Adobe CS3, and a couple of documents - same problem with no added extensions. Other computer with tons of extensions and fonts, etc. - no problem.
    • Plain text documents print fine.
    • Some PostScript documents will print, but rarely.
    • Will not print to HP LaserJet 2420, Minolta Di650 Fiery, ABDick Platemaker.
    • WIll print to Kodak DigiMaster (three different models and versions)
Everything that I think sounds like it could be the problem is disproved by the fact that several other Mac Pros with the exact same configuration have no problem. I'm thinking about cloning another Mac Pro system that works and seeing if I can go about it that way.
Apple support was no help. Nor was Adobe. They tried to be helpful, but there is no logic to solving this one. This has been going on for over a week now and I've tried so many things. It's driving me crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It was actually just a commonly used font that had gone bad somehow. Problems like that are always fonts or links. Sometimes they just aren't as obvious. We thought we'd checked everything and it affected so many of her files because she used the font so often.

  • How to keep an earlier version of AW in case update causes problems?

I have several ideas on how to make this update less of a problem just in case I can't access older docs. Is any of these solutions workable?
Is it possible to burn a useable CD of my current AW 6 folder in case the update to 6.2.9 doesn't work - or doesn't open older documents that my current version does open?
Could I then run AW directly from this CD to access the older docs if they can't be opened from the update? (even though a newer version -6.2.9 - of AW would be installed in X?)
OR can I reinstall AW 6 (into my OS 9 startup disk) from my original AW install disk to access the older versions?
OR yet another idea, could I duplicate my current AW 6 folder and leave one AW 6 folder in the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder and move another to Applications folder in X. Then, I could do the update app in the X folder and test if the old documents still open. Then I can just delete the duplicated folder which I left in OS 9. OR will having 2 AW 6 folders cause confusion when I do the update? I assume the single user legal issue is OK with 2 AW folders on my computer for a few hours.
    Thanks for your input,
    Mrs H

SUCCESS! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! (please keep reading there is a question at the end)
AW 6.2.9 is now on my G4.
Because of the way the Apple consultant at the Apple store set up our HDs when he installed Tiger for us, we had 2 copies already of AW 6.1. (We work from 3 external LaCie HDs)
I only updated the 6.1 that lives in Tiger. I left the other as is at 6.1 since I know it will open the older docs that I have and need there in OS 9. And it had a translator bundled in (by Dataviz if I recall) for other formats - I'm not sure if this nice feature still exists in the update.
The installer said it would install 6.2.8 (??) in OS 9 and 6.2.9 in OS X. But because I chose the AW 6 folder that lives in the X HD for the install, it only could access that and left the other alone.
    MY NEW QUESTION:
The font list is quite short. I really don't use a lot of fonts, but do favour Verdana which is not in the list. Any clues on this?
Thank you all again so much for your help with this problem,
    Mrs H

  • Yet another MacBook Pro with display issues (NVdia chip)

Exactly one year and 1 week after purchase, my video controller started freaking out. So just 1 week out of warranty, my display started flickering, blinking, showing garbled clumps of pixels and got progressively worse over the last week until, now, it locks up and/or reboots after about 15 minutes of uptime.
    I have:
    - installed all updates, including firmware
    - reset PRAM
    - re-seated RAM
    - replaced RAM
    - used SMC FanControl to try and keep the GPU cool
    - parked the MacBook in front of the fan/air conditioner in an attempt to keep the GPU cool
    - ran the Hardware Test, which returned a faulty video controller
None of the above have had any positive effect whatsover.
I've dug through these forums and hunted around the rest of the net for more info. Every symptom points to the NVidia GeForce issue. It seemed to be heat related. Maybe it was at first (even though max temps were never over 180 F), but after just one more day it doesn't seem to matter anymore. The machine is just FUBAR.
Tomorrow, I'm taking it in to the Apple store for service. Everything I've read here tells me it'll be at $1,000 logic board replacement since I'm a week out of warranty. Needless to say, if I come home tomorrow with a $1,000 receipt AND no laptop I'm going to be pretty upset.
What really concerns me is that, if I have to get the logic board replaced, they'll just put in yet another faulty board with another NVdia chip that will do the same thing all over again. There has to be another option, short of just getting a new iMac or tower with an ATI card instead. What else can I do?

I think my GPU is borked too.

http://noizesurge.com/downloads/gpu2.jpg - incidentally my computer had completely frozen at this point.
I'm pretty sure from observing these types of glitches that this is a hardware fault. I shall ring Apple on Monday and hopefully they can pick it up and sort it all out! Does anyone know roughly how long a turnaround is in the UK?
Yes, your video controller is toast. That's exactly how mine looked.
Just to make certain, run the Hardware Test:
    - Put in DVD 1 that came with your MacBook Pro.
    - Shut down
    - Restart, holding the D key
    - You'll be put into test mode, run the default test (no need to run the robust test at this stage)
I'm betting it will return a message that looks like: "4VDC/1/40000003: videocontroller"
If so, your logic board will have to be replaced.
The Apple Store I went to (Michigan Ave, Chicago) told me it would take 5-7 days. I'm not sure what UK times would be like, but I'd expect a little longer.

Incidentally, people are saying that they've have logic boards and what not replaced only for the problem to reoccur. Does this mean nVidia haven't properly fixed the issue?
Correct. Nvidia hasn't done a thing about this (that I'm aware of), and Apple seems to be putting the same logic boards with the faulty Nvidia chips back in.
Until we see a new/refreshed line of MacBook Pro's, I think we're stuck.

  • Yet Another Soon to be MBP Owner in Need of Guidence

    Hello all,
Believe it or not this is yet another post from a college student in the process of purchasing a new MBP who's appealing to the venerable Apple discussion board community for guidance. My dilemma is not that I can't decide on what MBP I want or what features I need, I've already decided on a top of the line model with the 7200 RPM hard drive and a Crucial ram upgrade, it's that I can't decide when would be the best time to make the purchase given the WWDC keynote on the 7th of August. I would like to get the most bang for my three grand but I need have the computer up and running by the twenty-first with Windows installed to run AutoCad. Would you recommend waiting until the 7th to order the computer and see it the MBP's are updated with the hope an updated MBP would be able to get to me in time or should I buy now with the knowledge that I'll be buying a computer that will be updated, but not outdated, soon?
    Thanks for your time,
    Eric
    PowerBook 12-inch 867

I am also a college student... and I was going to wait for the new merom, but I decided against it... I just think the likelyhood of them released before september is unlikely in my head... but you never know... But I looked at it this way... I wanted a MBP bad, despite all the problems I heard about them (my mbp has no problems to this day).... I figured if I waited for the new releases, the only thing that would change is the fact that it's basically a new computer, and with new computers come with new problems... I also figured, the likelyhood of the computers being released before my school started was slim, so I bought it now. I am very happy with my MBP right now, and you have to think of it this way, there will always be upgrades, whos to say that after the merom has been released, something new will becoming after that... I find it less painful to buy a MBP in july, and have the meroms be released months later, then purchasing it in september, and having them be released a possible weeks later... a little less painful, but that's my input, do what you want, I have a 17" MBP , week 26, and I am a happy camper!
