Your Keyword System?

Hi -
I'm about to plunge into Keywording with Keyword Manager and wanted to see if I could get any "best practices" before I get started. I'm assuming the number one tip is to think out my keywording scheme BEFORE I get started? Any other tips you learned along the way? I wish there was facial recognition - sigh - that would save me about 9,000 hours given my 25,000 photos! I'm mostly doing family and life events, lots of people, places, occasions.
I have posted with Terence Devlin before and so I'm hoping he'll be OK with the fact that I'm copying and posting his advice to me below. I don't want to be ungrateful and make for redundant work! So, anything else to add to below?
One small question among below is that if the info is in the EXIF data (date and camera), does the iPhoto search automatically search that or do I need to tell it to do that? (When I'm choosing date, and it gives me the little calendar of months, is that going by EXIF data or by the "event" data?
Thanks!

I keyword on a
Who
What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 20k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
File -> New Smart Album
set it to 'All"
title contains Seattle
keyword is mountain
keyword is snow
rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
New Smart Album
Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.
Also, the Exif contains the camera information already, so no need to keyword for that. Have a look at the options in iPhoto -> New Smart Album... click on the drop down

My experience of keywording is that it bears revision as you go. And you need to ask yourself how often will you need to find these particular shots:
For instance I come well supplied with Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, Nieces and Nephews. When I began I started keywording for each individual.
So a Keyword Hierarchy might look like this:
Family -> Devlin -> John -> Michael (Where John is my brother and Michael is my nephew.)
But as I worked I realised that I don’t have that many pics of Michael, so I simply grouped him under his Dad. So the keywords became
Family -> Devlin -> John
And this will get me Michael’s photos too - or close enough. After all, how often do I look for pics of Michael?
In the end I found that I have individual keywords for my own kids, and everyone else’s goes under their parent. Ditto for Spouses etc, If I want a pic of my Brothe in Law I search on my Sister’s Name. That works for me.
Then you have to be a little forgiving of the system too...
There is an exception for one family of nieces and nephews whom we see often, often holiday together and so we have a large number of pics of them too. So each of those kids has their own keyword.
By all means have a general idea before you start, but don’t be afraid to revise as you go.

As said Firefox for Windows from mozilla.org is a 32-bit application. The WOW64 in UA means it is a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows.

  • How do you organise the management of your IdM system?

    Hi Everyone,
We're just starting off on our IdM project and I'm looking for some help and advice around how you've organised roles and responsibilities for managing your IdM system. Things like:
       - Who is responsible for managing the RunTime environments?
       - Who is responsible for managing the UI infrastructure?
       - Who configures Idm using the MMC?
       - Who configured IdM using the UI?
I'm a basis guy and have built a sandpit environment to get a look at the product and understand a little more about how it works. At the MMC level it seems all or nothing which makes me question who I should let have access to this. Perhaps I should let more people have access to Dev, but not in Test / Live?? And use the system copy mechanism to promote to live.
Personally I see the Basis team managing the Runtime and UI infrastructure. The 'IdM' / security team managing via the UI, but I'm not clear about who to give access to the MMC.
I'd be grateful for any feedback.
    Thanks
    Gareth

    Hello Gareth
This question can give a lot of talk. And there is no right or wrong, as it depends mainly how your organization is structured.
Basically I would not split between DEV/QAS/PRD in terms of authorizations. My view is, that those from the business (eg. Head of Accounting) only get privileges on the UI. For example he can approve all requests, change users and such. All that has to do with DB, MMC and others, should be done by the basis guys. I know this is not always possible, but it would be good if one person could do all the tasks. This is good when you need to solve a problem, but can obviously also lead to other problems in security related issues.

  • Could you check your CRM system for a business role?

    Hi Forum,
i have difficulties getting my business partner from IS-U to CRM in an initial load because a business partner role is missing in CRM. The role is 'MKK' Contract Partner
It exists in IS-U but not in my CRM. As i cannot create that role in CRM because it is in the SAP namespace i would like to know if it exists in your CRM system. And - if you can say - how it came there. By default/installation or later by middleware processes.
    Thank you

Please - just make a little check in your CRM system...is there a role 'MKK' contract partner or not ??
From that depends where i can continue searching for the error
SPRO -> Cross Application Components -> SAP Business Partner -> Business Partner -> Basic Settings -> Business Partner Roles -> Define BP Roles
    Thank you

  • Backing up your Linux systems with the command line

While there are many GUI-based backup and storage tools for Linux users, there are also a few command line-based tools. "Rsync" is one of these tools and, according to Linux.com, it stands for remote sync. With afull tutorial on how to use rsync, Linux.com walks you through how "one of the most used'tools' in the UNIX world [works]."
Even though it's a simple tool, rsync has quite a few capabilities. You can use rsync "to sync files on two directories on the same PC, on two different systems on the same network, [and] .... on machines thousands of miles apart, over the Internet." In its guide, Linux.com explains each of these processes in detail. While the guide focuses on server backup, each and every command has its place on your personal workstation as well.
What other tools do you use to back up your Linux systems?
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

try checking relevant environment variables like the CLASSPATH.... a major source of failures in Windows is when in the classpath there is a path containing SPACES.... also enabling some "debug" or "verbose" flag (not sure how to do it) would provide more insight...

  • Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine

Disclaimer: Apple does not necessarily endorse any suggestions, solutions, or third-party software products that may be mentioned in the topic below. Q: Can I restore my Macs’ entire system, and how is Time Machine involved?
A: Yes, you have several options, each involving increasing degrees of severity. In all cases Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) will be required as previous OS X versions do not work with Time Machine backups. Naturally, all of these methods will require a significant amount of time, so plan accordingly.
    *Archive & Install*
An Archive and Install is the least invasive of the 3 methods. This approach results in a fresh copy of the Mac OS system software while at the same time preserving all current user accounts on your Mac. Additionally, this method will permit Time Machine to continue backing up to the same set of backups it did prior to the installation.
    Procedure:
Verify that your Mac has uninterrupted AC power.
Turn “OFF” Time Machine in the Preferences.
Insert your original Mac OS 10.5 Leopard DVD and reboot while holding down the “C” key.
At the “Welcome” screen click “Continue”.
At “Select a Destination” choose your Macs’ hard disk.
Click “Options” in the lower left.
    Choose “Archive and Install”.
Ensure that “Preserve Users and Network Settings” is checked.
    Click “OK”.
Back at the “Select a Destination” screen click “Continue”.
    At “Install Summary” click “Install”.
Once the installation is complete, use Software Update to bring your Mac up to date.
Next, Launch Disk Utility, select your Macs’ internal disk on the left, and click “Repair Disk Permissions”.
During this initial period, Spotlight is going to re-index your Mac’ hard disk. This can take up to several of hours depending upon the volume of data. Allow it to complete before resuming Time Machine backups. You can monitor its’ progress by clicking on the Spotlight icon in the menu bar.
During the installation a new folder was created at the root level of your hard disk labeled “Previous Systems”. These are all the system files that were just replaced with fresh copies. If you are comfortable, you can delete this folder right away. Otherwise, wait a week or so incase there is something you wish to retrieve, then delete it.
Finally, turn Time Machine back “ON” in the Preferences. Time Machine should continue to backup to the same set of backups that it did prior to the Archive & Install. However, due to the extensive changes to the systems’ directories, the first backup will require a lengthy session of “Preparing...” as Time Machine performs a “deep traversal”. Allow this to proceed uninterrupted. Naturally, this first backup may be a significant one, perhaps involving several GB of data, so attempting this wirelessly will require time and patience.
    *”Restore System From Backup...”*
If however, your system has experienced a serious malfunction, or a Mac OS software update has produced undesirable behavior, you can perform a full system restore from your Time Machine backups. This will result in a system virtually identical to the OS environment that existed on the date of the backup you choose to restore from. All system software, applications, and user accounts will be replaced with copies as they existed when that backup took place. The advantage here is that, generally, no further installation of 3rd-party software is required and all of your personal & system settings a preserved. The disadvantage is that because you retain your personal settings and system files, you run the risk of reintroducing any problems you experienced with the previous installation, including issues that necessitated the full restore in the first place.
Naturally, the time and date you choose to restore from can make a significant difference in the state of your resulting OS environment. Choosing the most recent date from which to restore is most desirable. If, however, one or more Time Machine backups occurred after you began experiencing issues with your system, then going farther back in time to restore from will be more advantageous. Files created or modified after you began experiencing system issues may later be recovered via Time Machines’ “time travel” interface (“Browse other Time Machine disk...”).
Unfortunately, restoring your system by this means will result in Time Machine abandoning previous backup sets and beginning a new set. So verify ahead of time that you have enough space on your backup drive for another full backup. Alternatively, once the full restore is complete, you can delete the old backups to free space on the drive. Or you can begin backups on a different hard disk while retaining the older backups until you are satisfied that the current set have accumulated enough history.
    Procedure:
Verify that your Mac has uninterrupted AC power.
For faster installation, Time Capsule/AirDisk users should connect their Macs directly to their Airport device via ethernet.
Insert your original Mac OS 10.5 Leopard DVD and reboot while holding down the “C” key.
At the “Welcome” screen go up to the “Utilities” menu and select “Restore System From Backup…”.
The “Restore Your System” window reminds you that this procedure will erase all data on your Macs internal hard disk. Click “Continue”.
At “Select a Backup Source” choose your Time Machine backup disk and click “Continue”. (If the backup disk you are restoring from is a network drive then click “Connect to Remote Disk”. Next, choose the disk image from which the restore will be drawn from and click “Continue”.)
At “Select a Backup” choose from which set of backups you would like to “Restore From” in the drop-down menu. (If your backup drive only has one set, this will be grayed out.)
Next, highlight the date and Mac OS X version from which you would like to restore.
    Click “Continue”.
At “Select a Destination” choose your Macs’ internal hard disk. Give the installer time while it calculates the space required for the restore. When ready click “Restore”.
Confirm your desire to erase the drive by clicking “Continue”.
Obviously, this will take quite some time. But when the installer finally announces it has finish, click “Restart”.
After logging in, immediately go to System Preferences --> Time Machine, and turn “OFF” backups, even if a backup attempted has begun.
Finally, turn Time Machine back “ON” in the Preferences. Time Machine should continue to backup to the same set of backups that it did prior to the restore. However, due to event logs being out of sync, the first backup will require a lengthy session of “Preparing...” as Time Machine performs a “deep traversal”. Allow this to proceed uninterrupted. Additionally, the subsequent backup may be quite substantial involving many GB of data, but don’t be alarmed.
Your system has now been restored to virtually the same state it was in on the date of the backup you chose. (See this article for a list of files that TM does not restore, http://shiftedbits.org/2007/10/31/time-machine-exclusions/)
    *Erase, Install, & Migrate*
A final option, reserved for last resort, is to erase the hard disk, install a fresh copy of the Mac OS, and then use Migration Assistant during the installation to restore your user accounts. This is the Mac equivalent of ‘Slash and Burn’, and really should only be necessary if you require a completely fresh start.
    Procedure:
Verify that your Mac has uninterrupted AC power.
For faster migration of user data, Time Capsule/AirDisk users should connect their Macs directly to their Airport device via ethernet.
Insert your original Mac OS 10.5 Leopard DVD and reboot while holding down the “C” key.
At the “Welcome” screen click “Continue”.
Click “Agree” to the user agreement.
Select you Macs internal hard disk and click “Options”.
    Select “Erase and Install”.
Select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” for disk format. (Avoid selecting “Case-sensitive” unless you know what you are doing.)
    Click “OK”.
    Click “Continue”.
At “Install Summary” click “Customize” if you would like to eliminate certain Print Drivers, Fonts, or Language packages from being installed. Otherwise, click “Install”.
If you wish, you can click “Skip” when the DVD integrity check begins.
After the initial installation completes, your Mac will restart and you will see the video introduction.
At “Welcome” select your country and then preferred keyboard.
At “Do You Already Own a Mac?” you are asked “Would you like to transfer your information?”
    +from another Mac+
+from another volume on this Mac+
    +from a Time Machine backup+
+Do not transfer my information now+
Select “from a Time Machine backup” and click “Continue”.
At “Select a Backup Volume” choose your Time Machine backup disk and click “Continue”. (If you are attempting the migration wirelessly, then click “Join...” and select your network first.)
At “Transfer Your Information” check all the categories you wish to migrate over. If you wish your Mac to be in the same state as your last backup, then check everything. Give the installer time to calculate sizes.
Once that is complete, the “Transfer” button will become active and you can click it.
After the install, verify the registration information, click “Connect” and you are done.
After logging in, immediately go to System Preferences --> Time Machine, and turn “OFF” backups, even if a backup attempted has begun.
Next, Launch Disk Utility, select your Macs’ internal disk on the left, and click “Repair Disk Permissions”.
Interestingly, no Spotlight indexing appears necessary, so, once the permission repair is complete, turn Time Machine back “ON” in the Preferences. Time Machine should continue to backup to the same set of backups that it did prior to the restore. However, due to event logs being out of sync, the first backup will require a lengthy session of “Preparing...” as Time Machine performs a “deep traversal”. Allow this to proceed uninterrupted. Naturally, the first backup after a significant installation like this will be quite large so don’t be alarmed.

Did you do a full system restore, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum)?
If so, everything should have been restored, just like they say, unless things were excluded from Time Machine (there's some very bad advice about that on the internet).
All the things you describe are in +*<home folder>/Library/Preferences.+* If you used +Migration Assistant+ instead, you may have an extra user account, that has the restored preferences.

    That applies to Leopard only.

The number of devices that can be activated on your account is limited for each type of content. If you did not deactivate your previous system you can deactivate all systems on the SEN website. Please note you can only complete this process once every 6 months.
Select your local user account and press up on the control pad to access the Function menu and go to Settings > PlayStation Network/Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4 > Activate and confirm by selecting ‘Yes’.
    Access your game saves
You can restore any game saves from Online Storage facility or a USB storage device.
To restore your game saves from your Online Storage go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in Online Storage > Download to System Storage.
Then select the individual saves you wish to download.
To restore your game saves from USB Storage go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data on USB Storage Device > Copy to System Storage.
Then select the individual saves you wish to transfer to the system.
    Re-download your Store purchases
You can re-download games, DLC, Themes or any other content you have previously purchased from the PlayStation Store.
To do this go to your Library which can be accessed through the PS Store or by going to the far right of your content area menu.
All you need to do is select the content you wish to download and press x > Download.
You can check the progress of your downloads by going to Notifications > Downloads

Hi, Thanks for this post, it's really useful. I need to send my PS4 for service due to it automatically ejecting discs while is on standby mode, but I can't find that issue in the "Fix and replace" section to order the replacement via the website. Do I need to call to support to initiate the process or can I select any of the BR drive fail options? Thanks!
