Youtube functionality

I am currently creating a custom movie player with controls.
Many of the videos have very large file sizes and I would like to
have the same type of functionality that YouTube has; The ability
to jump ahead of the download point, drop the cached portion and
start at the new point if the user tries to scrub past the buffered
portion. Is this type of functionality possible without the use of
a media server, or can it be done on any server?

There was a way to do this profiled a few years back without
a streaming media server by just requesting a future portion of the
flv from a php script.
http://www.flashcomguru.com/index.cfm/2005/11/2/Streaming-flv-video-via-PHP-take-two
This required an additional step though: injecting additional
metadata into the flvs for seekable bytepositions, so that only
'seekable' timepoints were requested from the flash client - I
think these were at video keyframe points. I'm not sure if this
type of thing is possible with the newer h264 encoded videos etc, I
can't recall anything mentioned about that.

  • Why do over 90% of YouTube functions no longer work on Firefox?

For the past week everything I try to do on YouTube with Firefox has been extremely slow, sometimes near that of a dial-up connection. I've tried using all three browsers--IE8, Firefox, and Chrome--and the problem appears to be ONLY with Firefox. In fact, with Firefox over 90% of YouTube features will not work at all, including playback on "My Channel".
All three browsers function perfectly at all other web sites.
My videos are being inundated with SPAM promoting several different illegal download sites, yet when I try to report these as SPAM I repeatedly get a "500 Internal Server Error" with all three browsers. Please keep in mind that these messages are sent to me by YouTube, NOT the spammers. The only browser that will actually allow me to delete the message itself from the video is Chrome...both IE8 and Firefox are totally unresponsive to all options.
When trying to access my channel page (or ANY channel page) on Firefox (and ONLY Firefox), I repeatedly get the message: "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player. " However, playing videos in a separate tab is not a problem with any of the 3 browsers. Accessing my channel page or any other channel page is not a problem with either IE8 or Google Chrome.
I have verified that the latest versions of Flash Player and JavaScript have been installed and are functioning properly, and everything on YouTube operates properly on both IE8 and the lastest version of Google Chrome.
I have updated McAfee and run a deep, full-system scan. I've swept my registry with three different cleaners, and Secunia PSI shows no problems.
This is the second time in the past two months that YouTube has shut out Firefox almost totally.
    What is going on?
    Paige

I even tried the RAM extension trick..MUST be YouTube..

  • I have been having problems with YouTube functionality when using Firefox, some of them having begun with the latest Firefox update

After a fairly recent update, I began having the option to paste text disappear, I've had backspace cause the browser to go back to the previous page while in a text box, and other issues which are apparently a matter of Firefox not recognizing the fact that I am typing in a text box.
After the last update, suddenly YouTube video page URL links no longer translate into links containing the title of the video, and also things like the use of bookend asterisks in order to have text appear in bold typeface no longer work.

i have the same problem with the above..firefox is running too slow with the games in facebook..but it runs good when browsing my updates, msgs, photos...firefox is totally opposite of IE..IE is faster with the games and slow while browsing..i love to use mozila but when i do games it really pisses me off...hope you could help me..

  • Added YOUTUBE functionality

I love youtube on the apple tv but here are a few things i want to see in a software update.
    1. Support for viewing your subscriptions on the apple tv.
    2. Support for a USB or Bluetooth keyboard. (really wouldnt' be a big issue if i had my subscriptions though)
    3. Linking your favorites from the youtube website with the favorites in the apple tv menu.
Plllllease Apple if you see this, give me my wish.

  • What exactly are the "Share to YouTube" Settings?

    Hi-
I'm just curious as to what the settings are in FCS 3 (or QT X) for Sharing to YouTube. What I mean by this is, what are the equivalent Compressor or QuickTime Export settings that this feature uses?
In QT 7, I would normally export as an H.264 wrapped MPEG-4 file using a 2500 data rate so that my videos would appear on YouTube as HD, and in relatively great quality without a large overall file size.
Other suggestions always had me converting to a QT mov file (H.264) with 2500 data rate.
I want to know what is the best and easiest way to get to YouTube so that I can inform others of the proper steps to take. The Share to YouTube function would be easiest now, but am still curious about the settings that it uses.
In a related note, the Share to YouTube feature is not letting me use the 3-D tags (yt3d:enable=true yt3d:aspect=16:9) because it contains tags that are not letters or numbers. Is there a way around this?

Great, thanks David. So whenever I see an export template setting out of something, it's pretty much the same setting as in Compressor? Like when I do an "Export to Web" from QT 7 and choose the iPhone preset, that is the setting that they have in Compressor?
Also, any idea about the "TAG" problem in FCP?

  • Videos in Youtube not working for iPod touch?, Videos in Youtube not working for iPod touch?, Videos in Youtube not working for iPod touch?

Upgraded iTunes to ver.10 & verified it is current.... Updated iOS5 on iPod Touch3G & iPad-1 ~~ great, NOW the YouTube app won't PLAY videos.. Both mobile devices let me search for videos & displays a LIST of available videos... Once I touch or select a video to PLAY,  the device attempts to download the video, but after about a 2 minute TIMEOUT, I get the message "UNKNOWN ERROR"... so frustrating..  same thing happens exactly on iPad_1 or iPod Touch3G....
I have booted my Wi-Fi router by turning it OFF & ON a couple of times to reload & reboot..  Didn't HELP..   I've tinkered with the settings on iTunes, changing the 128 bit transfer, de-select PLAY MOVIES & SYNCED.. then re-selected PLAY MOVIES & SYNCED.   Nothing works..  I've searched Google, Bing, Yahoo answers, with NO definite FIX.    I've seen a lot about JAILBREAKING an iPhone, etc.   but I don't want to BREAK out of JAIL [ or UNLOCK a LOCKED phone or mobile device],  I just want to PLAY YouTube videos...  Is that so hard ? ? ? ?   H E L P ? ? ? ?

Today 11/2/11 the YouTube function on my iPod & iPad1 are working correctly again, in fact, seems to be loading videos faster on my 4G Wi-Fi connection.   APPLE must have corrected the glitch over Wi-Fi since I authorized iCloud access.   Thank you APPLE for correcting this bug which was certainly 'bugging' me...  KUDOS~!

  • Tutorial: How To Improve Youtube Playback on iBook G3

    Salutations,
this is a brief tutorial on how to improve Youtube video playback on an Apple iBook G3. As of now, I have only tested this method on my own iBook. iBook's with lower specs may not receive the same performance upgrade from this brief tutorial. With that said, here is what you can do to make Youtube functional on your iBook G3.
    1) Disable Dashboard and Spotlight:
While widgets are fun and Spotlight is a useful quick search tool, they are known resource consumers that make video playback problematic for older Mac laptops, such as the iBook G3. To accomplish this, you will have to use the terminal. Once the terminal is open, enter the following command
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
After entering this command, you will then need to restart the Dock (Dashbaord is owned by the Dock). To do so, again, using the terminal, you will enter the following command.
    killall Dock
You may still see the Dashboard icon in the Dock, but clicking on it should do nothing.
For the next part, you will use the terminal to disable Spotlight. Open the terminal and enter the following command.
    sudo nano /etc/hostconfig
This will bring up a configuration listing. Use the arrow keys to scroll down and change the value, SPOTLIGHT=-YES-, to SPOTLIGHT=-NO-.
From here, you should press Ctrl+X to exit, upon which it will ask if you want to save. Follow the on screen prompts to save, and exit out of the terminal. Spotlight will still appear in the corner of your screen, but it won't search for anything. Now on to the next step.
    2) For any video URL on Youtube, add &fmt=5 to the end of the URL, and this will force videos to run in quarter VGA mode (320x240). The video quality will be degraded, but you should maintain a stable frame rate that is uninterrupted and capable of streaming without the need to pause and wait for the entire video to load.
This method has worked for me for old and new videos alike. Unfortunately, I have not found a way to make iTunes/Quicktime force videos into a low resolution mode, so this fix will only resolve video playback involving Youtube. Best of luck to you all. I hope that this tutorial has been helpful.

Others have suggested that you may want to tell users how to revert to the original settings.
I'm working on getting this posted as a User Tip. Would you like to add instructions on how to regain Dashboard and Spotlight functionality?

  • Share to YouTube - uploading issues

After messing around with this for the last 2 days... i've come to a few conclusions.. one is... there are some bugs that still need to be worked out with iMovie '08 and the Share to YouTube function.
I made my first iMovie '08 project the other day, and tried uploading it to YouTube. I went through the steps to authorize 3rd Party uploads to YouTube, and everything seemed fine. The upload would get to 100%, the i would get this message...
When i hit OK, nothing else would happen. There was no video on YouTube... nothing.
Someone suggested that i try a few different things, so i made a quick movie clip with Quicktime using my iSight. I dropped that into iMovie, threw a title on it, and tried to upload it to YouTube. It worked. The first files i was working with were originally MPG files from my Sony Cybershot, which i converted with VisualHub to MP4 because iMovie wouldn't recognize them otherwise. So my first thought is there's some issue with encoding, because my new clip was made in Quicktime as a MOV but using MP4 encoding.
Then i though... maybe the file size is too big, but i hadn't received any warning message about it, and i figured that iMovie was sizing it to fit for YouTube. There's the problem... The only warning message iMovie itself gives you before uploading, is if your movie is more than 10mins.
YouTube has 2 restrictions... 1) That your upload is under 10 mins, and... 2) That you movie is under 100mb's.
So... since my movie was under 10 mins it should be fine, but when i exported it to my desktop, and rollover on the "i" it says that my movie 119.5mb's.
This is the problem... iMovie doesn't warn you that your movie might be rejected for being larger than 100mb's, it should.
I made my movie a little longer... so it was over 10 min's to test this, and there's a warning about the length, but not the size.
There are no real options in iMovie for compression or bitrate or anything like this. It would be nice if this share to YouTube window had a slider that you could adjust the bitrate, so that your movie can be reduced slightly to fit just under 10 mins, and under 100mb's, or an automated compression to keep these requirements for YouTube.
Yes of course i can just export to my desktop, and then upload to YouTube directly... but part of the reason i got excited about iMovie '08 was the prospect of being able to just click a few buttons, and upload directly through the program.
    *PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE*

Yes of course i can just export to my desktop, and then upload to YouTube directly... but part of the reason i got excited about iMovie '08 was the prospect of being able to just click a few buttons, and upload directly through the program.
Have you considered publishing to YouTube using the "Mobile" setting? Basically, the "Medium" settings uses a 1.7 Mbps data rate target. If the average data rate was exactly 1.7 Mbps then the maximum length you can expect is on the order of 7.8 minutes. (Realistically, however, it is probably a bit more than 8 minutes for the average movie.) On the other hand, the "Mobile" target data rate is only 1.0 Mbps which should guarantee the full 10 minutes every time. Believe you are limited to a combined data rate of about 1333 Kbps to ensure a full 10-minute clip would be acceptable.
Overall, a good analysis of the situation. My hat is off to you. Thanks for posting this little tidbit of information.

  • Include an interactive Youtube player in Edge Animate - Not working properly!

    Hi folks!
I am working on a new project which is based on a interactive web video.
In the Edge Animate proyect I have implemented a Youtube fullscreen player which has interactivity. On the one side, in the Edge project I have included a JS which contains the definition of the Youtube player API and all its functions in order to enable the interactivity. On the other side, in the HTML which creates Edge Animate I have included the div for the player and some buttons to play and stop the Youtube video.
When I launch the website using Edge Animate everything works fine, but when I open the HTML file without Edge Animate, the Youtube player is not being defined (the player div is empty). I think the problem may be related to the external JS file in the Edge project.
I don't recognise why this external JS with the Youtube functions only load when it is launched from the Edge Animation app.
My aim is to load this project as a OAM file at the end in Wordpress with the Youtube player and its interactivity included.
Need help for this issue! Does some know how to fix it?
    Conclusion:
Fullscreen animation with Youtube Player as background with some buttons in the HTML project file to play and stop the youtube video. Youtube API functions inside an external JS file and included in the Edge Animate project. Only works when the animation is launched with Edge Animate. If the HTML file is open directly, Youtube player is empty.
PD: I have attached some images in order to offer a clearer vision of this problem.

    Actually yes...!
Failed to load resource: net::ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND file://www.youtube.com/player_api
But why only when opening the HTML directly...?
There is another error...maybe this is the problem source:
Uncaught SecurityError: Blocked a frame with origin "https://www.youtube.com" from accessing a frame with origin "http://localhost:54321". The frame requesting access has a protocol of "https", the frame being accessed has a protocol of "http". Protocols must match.

  • YouTube Stopped Working on my Apple TV

Today I noticed that my YouTube functionality stopped working on my Apple TV... Only one day since the feature was added with the 1.1 update.
YouTube still showed in the menu, and I could access the YouTube menus, but all the menu items except History would not work... I would only get the spinning busy icon when trying to access any of the YouTube menus. It worked fine yesterday. I thought perhaps YouTube was down. But I had no trouble accessing YouTube via my Mac. I tried to log out and log back in... made no difference.
I tried waiting some time for the trouble to pass... still no change.
I came here to see if others were also having trouble... but I see no mention of it here.
So I then decided to restart my Apple TV. -- Now YouTube is working again! :o)
I am posting this message in case anyone else encounters the same problem.
I don't know if this was just a fluke thing or a sign of a possible bug somewhere.
    Cheers,
    Louis
    G5 PowerMac (Dual 2.7 Ghz)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

It could be a bug, but it could also be due to overly high network traffic from AppleTVs to YouTube.
I would not be at all surprised if AppleTV does not connect to the main YouTube site but rather some otherwise inaccessible sub-domain with some not all of the main site's functionality.
    If you think about it:
    - only some content is in AppleTV format and available
    - the interface is not the one you get in a web browser
So, I strongly suspect AppleTVs are connecting to a secondary YouTube service of some kind.

  • YouTube 10 Min. Duration Limit

For some time, YouTube imposed a 10 min. Duration limit to files being uploaded. The direct upload to YouTube function in PrE 11 still has that limit. This is because the YouTube Extended Accounts were not in place, when PrE 11 was written. It is likely that PrE 12 will allow for Extended YouTube Accounts, but no one knows yet. Unfortunately, YouTube's requirements and restrictions are a "moving target," and when changes are made after a software version has been written, a workaround will be necessary.
In the meantime, one can Publish+Share to a file on their computer, with the YouTube Preset, and then manually upload that longer Duration file, through their Extended YouTube Account. While not quite as convenient, as the direct upload, it allows for a video file, with more than 10 mins.
For more information on the Publish+Share for YouTube, see this FAQ Entry: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2759311#2759311
Hope that this helps explain why one cannot upload a longer Duration file, directly to YouTube, though one has an Extended YouTube Account.

    Hi Bill,
I clicked on the FAQ link that you provided, and followed John Cloudman’s instructions for saving as a Quicktime/MOV. The result was much better than what I got saving as a WMV. Just a couple questions, if you don’t mind.
Near the top of John’s instructions is the statement “Choose the DV preset and then click the Advanced button.”
However, the only choices I see in the drop-down “Presets” list are “128K Dual ISDN” and “Local Area Network (LAN)”.
So – what is meant by “Choose the DV pre-set”?
Also – for Audio > Frequency John specifies 44Khz, but the only choices given in the program are 8K, 16K, 32K and 48K.
In my test, I chose “128K Dual ISDN” as the pre-set and Audio > Frequency of 48K. As I mentioned, the result was a lot better than when saving as a WMV.
However, the audio is still a bit choppy – there are some tiny gaps in the sound.
What settings would I tweak to try to get the audio up to par?

  • YouTube extremely slow on iPod Touch

My iPod touch is 8GB version. I almost can't use Youtube at all because it takes at least 5 to 10 minutes to successfully load a 3-minute music video whereas in my PC, it only takes seconds. Can anyone help? I tried using it at various places and made sure the WiFi connection is perfect but still no luck.
I saw people saying that they have same problem after upgrading it to the newest software version. I'm using the newest version, the paid one. I really don't know what's going on.

I also have this problem. The YouTube application is so slow on my iPod touch it is more or less unusable. Viewing videos from the YouTube website on my Macbook Pro laptop is very fast on the same network however even very small (one or two minute) videos take up to 15 minutes to load on my iPod touch. Occasionally the video will stop loading about the third of the way through.
Hopefully this can be fixed soon in an update as it really limits the usefulness of the YouTube functionality at the moment.
    Cheers,
    James

  • Keynote '08 - Send to YouTube

Has anyone had any luck with the "Send to YouTube" function in Keynote '08. I was playing around with the trial today and made a very simple 3 slide slideshow and am attempting to "Send to YouTube". I went through the login procedure and granted Keynote access to my YouTube account, but Keynote has been processing for over 45 mins now. The dialog is stuck on
    "Preparing slideshow for sharing...
    Waiting for acknowledgement..."
    Any idea?

I had similar deal... 4 slide show but with lot's of transitions and audio narration. Export to Youtube medium size seemed hung "preparing slideshow". I opened safari and signed into youtube and I left it and came back 1/2 hr later and it was done and posted on youtube BUT the video was not right... audio OK. Video missed slides and transitions.
I then tried export to quicktime and that was good. It failed on try to export to Flash...

  • Apple TV hiding YouTube search results

I just got my AppleTV 2 weeks ago, I am so frustrated, I wish it worked as seamless as my MacBook and my iPhone. I always have to reboot it and sometimes it just stops working!
Anyways I wanted to ask if anyone else is having issues with AppleTV hiding YouTube search results.
For example if I search La Roux - Bulletproof on YouTube (online, web browser) I get the official video, on AppleTV I get whole bunch of other videos BUT the official. And this is not the only one. A lot of my YouTube favourites do not appear either.
I am under the impression that they hide the videos that are for sale on the iTunes store. If that is the case it makes me feel extremely deceived. They shouldn't market the YouTube functionality then. I hope I am the one not operating it properly.
Is there a way around this?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I've noticed this same issue myself but believe that it's driven not by Apple or YouTube as companies but instead by the unique YouTube user and whether or not they elect to have that video available on mobile devices, etc. at the time of upload.
Case in point, I've got some YT vids in which I declined upon upload to make them available on mobile devices which resulted in their not being available(or even visible) on aTV.
There's a wealth of info on this forum with all the savvy members. I'm sure someone else will chime-in and shed some more light on the subject.
