Zero-downtime Database Migration tool ?
We are exploring\evaluating tools provided by Oracle (or its partners) that ensures Zero-downtime Database Migration. Migration should include:
- Migration of data from one version of the application to another version with or without changes to the database schema.
- Migration of data from staging to production where staging was used for beta testing to host customers who created live data which need to be migrated to production. (Oracle to Oracle, SQL Server to Oracle, MySQL to Oracle, etc)
- if a data type changes (say int to varchar) in staging database for a particular column in a table, the change migration should happen in the production database as well
- if a column is added\deleted in a table of staging database, the same table alteration should migrate to production database
- records in production database should not be deleted\truncated during data\schema migration
- maintain zero-downtime
By Zero-Downtime we mean: both the source and the target should be up and accept updates in real time during migration process. This should again be synced across and hence help to eliminate downtime during migration between various vendor databases.
We are not looking for any ETL product, but out-of-the-box products like GoldenGate and Celona that ensure Zero-downtime database migration.
Hi,
I dont think that there is any easy answer. It looks like huge project so it should be done part to part.
If I understand
1) you have create staging database with all changes
2) production is in old structure
3) now you want to merge this two databases into one? Or applly all changes form staging to prod?
I see there one solution clone your staging and create new prod. Whenit's donw switch connection to your new prod database.

Can you merge two user accounts on a macbook? my wife has created a new user on her new macbook air then, inadvertently, created a second one when using the migration tool. 1st a/c has her office 365 install, while 2nd has her itunes database, docs and contacts. What is the best way forward to get everything into the one account? Not sure if the office 365 will allow another installation into the second account, otherwise would just do that and delete the first, if that is possible?
There is no merge but you can move data from one account to another via the Shared folder. Data is copied from Shared. Watch your free space when copying. These are large files. Do one at a time if you are on a small drive. After making copy, delete from other users before you start next copy.
Office365 installs in the main Applications folder and is available for all users on the computer. Activation is tied to the drive not the User. -

BasisNerdCAn you precise also what Migration tool are you using?
Migration from 5.1 to SAP BPC 7.0 NW?
In that case when you are speaking about the installation about what part are you speaking?
I think actually you are speaking about the migration tool from 4.2 to 7.0 Microsoft version .
In that case you can install the mIgration tool just with SAP BPC sys admin users and you have to input the password for that user. Sys admin user for BPC is usually the user used for installation of SAP BPC server.
Any way I suggest to follow the Migration tool training document and there you will find all the information necessary.

Oracle Database Migration Verifier - Can it be used for diff table structur
Hello,
We have re-engineered the existing sybase tables to a new structure in Oracle for few of the tables. For example a table in sybase is normalized to two tables in oracle. In these cases can the "Oracle Database Migration Verifier" be mapped such that the columns in one table in sybase be mapped to two table is Oracle with their respective column names.
In a gist can the tool be used even if the structure is not the same in the source and targer databases.
Please let me know if you need more clarifications regarding my query.
Regards,
Ramanathan.Knot really. The DMV was a simple tool for verifiying that what you now had in Oracle was what you had in Sybase. It does not do what you are expecting.

Oracle Database Migration Assistant for Unicode (DMU) is now available!
Oracle Database Migration Assistant for Unicode (DMU) is a next-generation GUI migration tool to help you migrate your databases to the Unicode character set. It is free for customers with database support contracts. The DMU is built on the same GUI platform as SQL Developer and JDeveloper. It uses dedicated RDBMS functionality to scan and convert a database to AL32UTF8 (or to the deprecated UTF8, if needed for some reasons). For existing AL32UTF8 and UTF8 databases, it provides a validation mode to check if data is really encoded in UTF-8. Learn more about the tool on its OTN pages.
There is a new Database Migration Assistant for Unicode. We encourage you to post all questions related to the tool and to the database character set migration process in general to that forum.
Thanks,
The DMU Development TeamHI there!
7.6.03 ? Why do you use outdated software for your migration.
At least use 7.6.06 or 7.7.07 !
About the performance topic - well, you've to figure out what the database is waiting for.
Activate time measurement, activate the DBanalyzer with a short snapshot interval (say 120 or 60 seconds) and check what warnings you get.
Also you should use the parameter check to make sure that you don't run into any setup-induced bottlenecks.
Apart from these very basic prerequisites for the analysis of this issue, you may want to check
SAP Note 1464560 FAQ: R3load on MaxDB
Maybe you can use some of the performance features available in the current R3load versions.
regards,
Lars

PDP pages do not get restored in database migration
Hi All,
I have an issue while performing database migration. Let me explain the scenario. The issue is that I had migrated 4+1 databases, i.e., 1 Content db and 4 Project Server DBs. We have only 2 site collections listed in DB, PWA and Top level root site collection,
obviously when I restored the content DB, the PWA site is also restored. So I deleted that as I need to provision a new one with the same name. So after restoration, I provisioned a new PWA site with the restored databases. It provisioned perfectly and our
data like projects, custom fields, etc are present. Also EPT pages are listed but they are not working reason being PDP pages are not restored in the migration. I tried this migration on 2 separate environments as well apart from this one and same is the case
in all restoration. Though there are ways to get the PDP pages like using Playbook tool or configuring Manually again, but as per the concept it should be migrated along with the content database.
Can anyone please help in such situation as how can we get the PDP pages in database migration? Is there anything that I am missing?
Thanks, Sumit Gupta SharePoint Consultant MCP, MCTS, CCNAHi,
The PDPs reside in a document library within the PWA site. You mentioned above when you did the 4+1 restore you deleted the PWA site, the main benefit of doing a 4+1 is that you don't lose the contents of your PWA site and effectively wire it back up on
the new instance.
If you restore again, this time, do not delete the PWA site and perform the reprovision, this will take your four Project server databases and then wire them back up to the PWA site (which includes your PDPs).
In answer to your other question, yes Playbooks can be used to move PDP's between environments.
So in short, don't delete the PWA site post content DB migration :)
Hope this helps.

I recently downloaded the Oracle Migration Tool for migrating a
Microsoft Access database to Oracle8 for Linux. This migration
tool contains the following components:
1. Oracle Installer 3.3.0.1.3
2. Oracle Migration Assistant for Microsoft Access 8.0.4.0.0
3. Oracle Named Pipes Protocol Adapter 8.0.4.0.0
4. Oracle Net8 Client 8.0.4.0.0
5. Oracle Objects for OLE 2.2.2.2.0
6. Oracle TCP/IP Protocol Adapter 8.0.4.0.0
7. Oracle8 ODBC Driver 8.0.4.0.0
8. Required Support Files 8.0.4.0.0
I installed everything onto my Windows98 client machine. Once I
did this, I could see the following entries in my Start Menu
under "Oracle for Windows95":
1. Microsoft ODBC Administrator
2. 004002 Class Library Documentation
3. 004022 Bound Controls and Class Library
4. 004022 Control Notes
5. 004022 Release Notes
6. Oracle Home Selector
7. Oracle Installer
8. Oracle Migration Assistant for MS Access
9. Oracle Objects for OLE Documentation
10. Oracle ODBC Help File
11. Oracle ODBC README File
12. Oracle ODBC Test
When I went into the Microsoft ODBC Administrator, I could also
see that there was a new entry under the ODBC Drivers tab:
Oracle ODBC Driver 8.00.0400 Oracle Corporation SQORA32.DLL
12/3/97
So far, so good.
Then I started going through the Oracle8 ODBC help file to get
my machine set up to start using the tool. Under "Configuration
Tasks," it says the following:
Before you configure the data source, you must configure Net8
database services, so there is an entry for each Service Name.
To do this, start the Oracle Net8 Assistant, either click on the
Oracle for Windows NT program group and click on the Oracle Net8
Assistant icon or from the start bar select Programs, select
Oracle for Windows NT, and select the Oracle Net8 Assistant.
Using the Oracle Net8 Assistant, you can create an entry in the
tnsnames.ora file for each Service Name. The Oracle Net8
Assistant is installed when you install Net8.
That's when I started running into problems. Although the
installer had shown that Net8 had been installed, I could not
find any evidence of a Net8 Assistant on my Windows98 client
machine. Is there a trick to starting up the Net8 Assistant?
Until I am able to perform this step, I cannot go to the next
step of configuring my ODBC driver.
Any help would be appreciated.

nullBrendan,
I am not 100% sure, but I believe win98 is not supported.... yet.
I know that 95 is supported, but to be honest, I do not run
winDOZE. Maybe an upper authority from Oracle should correct me
if I am wrong.

Homogeneous system copy using database specific tools
My enviroment is ECC6/Oracle 10.2.0.2/Solaris 10
I'm attempting my first system copy (central instance ABAP) using database specific tools from my PRD to my QAS system
in the source system I ran sapinst and proceed as follows
Execution of Service SAP ERP 6.0 SR3 > Software Life-cycle options > system copy > oracle > source system export >

The export creates two folders and an file ie ABAP, JAVA & LABELIDX.
The folder ABAP is empty while JAVA has three files.see details below. I have a feeling something is not right ?
Kindly advice before I proceed with database offline backup and importation in the target system

According to the system copy documents I've gone through I expect to see the following
in the export directory
=> structure with label files and source system information
=> database structure files (*.STR) for ABAP database objects
=> database statistics
=> Size calculation for the target database (*.EXT, DBSIZE.XML)
=> Archiving of the SDM
=> Archiving of application specific file system content
I get a dialog box message that the export has completed successfullu but only two phases were done ie
=> NW_export
=> Prepare To export JavaThanks Mark
I'll proceed with the import & inform you about the outcome
My QAS system is the transport domain controller i.e. it hosts the transport directory /usr/sap/trans
What happens to pending transports after system copy ? Is there a way I can retain them or do I have to advice my users to complete pending requests so that I can import all of them before proceeding .
what happens to the CUA configurations in my 3 tier system landscape after I overwrite QAS ? I will make a note of all the RFC's & thier configuration details just incase I need to recreate them

Configuration Migration Tool Question
Hi
I trying to migrate a FIM configuration from one server to another.
While following the steps described in "Introduction to the Configuration Migration Tool" document I get an error in step 8.

tool is that AnchorAttributeValue is unique within an Object Type.

ObjectID 2 = urn:uuid:8aa59dca-7759-4d32-96d2-3f21ed1239f2
At line:1 char:26
I am not ware, that I have changed anything in the portal itself at all. I only have custom Sync rules, Sets and MPRs defined.
How can I determin which those objects are that make the trouble here?
What are preferred join rules to overcome this problem?
Thanks in advance.
HenryI'm having the exact same error, but for other attributes:

Any tips on how to resolve this? These are built-in attributes, so I think I didn't cause this. When does he actually complain about duplicate values? Because there are more objects with duplicate DisplayNames...

Database Migration -- MaxDB to Oracle
Hello,
We are planning to migrate our XI 7.0 server from MaxDB to Oracle...
I am currently reading the System Copy Documentation from SAP...
Has anyone done MaxDb --> Oracle Heterogenous Copy....
Any Input, Guidelines & Strategies will be appreciated...
Thanks,
RaHuL...> If you read carefully the information at http://service.sap.com/osdbmigration you will see that you will not loose support for the migrated system if you choose not to use a certified migration consultant, even for a production system.
I have made other experiences in the past. Your mileage may vary.
According to (including the mentioned website):
Note 82478 - SAP system OS/DB migration
<...>
To execute an OS/DB migration, the following are required:
1. A technical consultant, specially certified for OS/DB migrations, executes the migration locally, irrespective of whether you are migrating a development system, a test system or a productive system. This ensures that the required "know-how" is available to deal with the complexity of the situation.
2. You use the migration check for the operating system or the database to migrate production systems.
<...>
If the prerequisites are not met, we must inform you that SAP cannot provide any SAP Support Line support for your migration.
<...>
> For clarification, I even opened an OSS message and worked with our SAP support rep. The only thing you may "loose" support for is for any issues encountered during the migration itself or any performance issues encountered after the migration that are clearly related to the migration or improper sizing. You can still open OSS messages and if SAP deems the problem related to not having a migration consultant then you still have the option to pay SAP support to continue to help with the problem.
Sure you always can do that, if you have the time to and if you want to take the risk. I'm just telling people the "least resistant way"; just read and answered too many threads because people were trying to migrate systems without having previously used R3load or know what it is about that tool.
> We moved several different landscapes from DB2 z/OS to SQLServer last year and did not use a migration consultant for any of them. We still have support for our SAP systems. We did have a thorough migration plan and tested in sandboxes many times well before we started the moves of even the development systems. We did also have SAP perform the required migration check on the production systems. We also found an instance or two of a bug with the migration tools, opened and OSS message about it, and got fixes or workarounds from SAP -- all without a certified migration consultant onsite.
I agree, everyone is free to do what he wants. I'm just quoting what's written and based on experiences. You may have made others, however, I wouldn't rely on "getting help" quickly if the prerequisites are not met. That's all I tell people.

Any migration tool for postgres to oracle? thanks!
i think sqldeveloper hasn't cover it yet.
Hi,
You are correct - SQL*Developer does not support migrating Postgres.
If you have access to My Oracle Support have a look at the following note for suggestions -
How To Migrate Non-Oracle Databases For Which a SQL*Developer or Migration Workbench Option Is Not Available (Doc ID 393760.1)
A brief summary is -
- use the DG4ODBC gateway to connect to Postgres and copy tables to Oracle
- load the Postgres data into flat files and put into Oracle using SQL*Loader
- try third-party providers as listed here -
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/migration/third-party-093040.html
- check if there are any third-party tools
- In the 12c documentation there is a migration guide:
Oracle® Database Migration Guide 12c Release 1 (12.1)
http://st-doc.us.oracle.com/12/121/gateways.121/e22508/migr_tools_feat.htm#sthref8
It lists steps as possible solutions how to migrate from a foreign database to Oracle in the section: Other Oracle Products that Enable Migration

Mike
