Zones and Swap space

Hi,
setting up several zones for SAP i'm trying to give each zone it's own swap area. Unfortunately "swap -a /dev/md/dsk/d101" is rejected with "not owner" error messages on the local zone. Is it possibly to define dedicated swap area for local zones ? How to do ?
Thx.

Until the ability to create per-zone swap areas is implemented, I'm looking for a way to limit the impact of having multiple zones share the same swap area. I'm particularly interested in limiting the potential impact of having an application within a non-global zone filling swap by writing to /tmp. So far, I've looked at using the "size=" mount option to limit the size of a non-global zone's tmpfs file system, and I've also looked at setting up a non-global zone's /tmp directory to be mounted on a separate disk partition using the following zonecfg entries and removing the "swap /tmp" entry from the non-global zone's vfstab file:
dir: /tmp
special:/dev/dsk/c#t#d#s#
raw:/dev/rdsk/c#t#d#s#
type: ufs
One problem with both of these methods is that they could be reversed by the non-global zone's administrator, or someone else who was able to obtain the non-global zone's root password.
Is anyone aware of a way that either of these methods could be implemented so that they couldn't be circumvented by someone who has the non-global zone's root password? Is there some other method that could be used as a workaround?
I'm also interested in knowing how the vfstab file for non-global zones are created...are they created or copied from a template or copied from the global zone's vfstab file and edited?
Thanks,
Carolyn

  • Java and swap space in Solaris 8

    Hi,
              I've set weblogic java to run on Xmx1534m with swap space 2Gb. It seems like we always encounter out-of-space during jsp compilations. This happens whenever the system crunches on available swap space. Any ideas what to adjust for, such as system paramters.

    You can use compiler class instead of external compiler and compile
              in-process. I use
              public class MyCompiler {
              public static void main(String[] args) {
              ByteArrayOutputStream err = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
              sun.tools.javac.Main compiler = new sun.tools.javac.Main(err, "javac");
              if(!compiler.compile(args)) {
              throw new RuntimeException(err.toString());

  • Difference between page file and swap space

    Hello friends
    What is difference between swap space and page file???
    I set the page file to 0 MB(No page file) but when I use Everest Software it show 1023 MB swap Space.Is there difference between them?

    Swapping meaning data in and out from memory ie. primary to secondary. Paging is also the same thing, but its mostly used nowadays as virtual memory is based on pages. So, its like pages in and out. Swap space the memory used for swapping entire processes
    from system memory into the swapfile. Where as paging transfers the pages to page file when the memory is almost full.
    Regarding Everest, I think you should check with the supplier.

    Hi
    we are using oracle11.5.10.2 on AIX 5.3 and recently upgraded database from oracle9.2.0.8 to Oracle 11gr2 (11.2.0.2)
    After upgrade Database i have observed gradually swap space is increasing and it is reaching upto 100%
    what could be the reason ?
    Please find below message from OEM also

  • How do I keep Warp Stabilizer and aeselflink from filling my swap space?

    Hello,
    I'm running the lastest version of AE on OS X, when I try and run warp stabilizer on a composition, aeselflink grows the virtual memory it uses (> 50GB) until it fills my swap space and causes my machine to hang, because the hard drive is full.
    Running AE's Edit->Purge options has no effect on the amount of virtual memory used.  I have to quit AE to get aeselflink to quit and free the memory used.  How can I limit the virtual memory used by aeselflink to something reasonable?

    I'm not aware of a way to control this in any more detail, but this stuff obeys the settings you make in the Render Multiple Frames Simultanuously prefs if used. Otherwise it will use factory defaults which should never use more than 4GB. Anyway, the behavior you see is highly irregular no matter what. Sounds like a memory leak, so maybe you can provide more info, including which AE version, what footages etc.

  • Swap space and tempdb

    Hi,
    I'm having RAID 1 and RAID 5. RAID 1 is partitioned into 3 drive letters, C, D, and E. RAID 5 got only 1 partition, which is drive F. C for OS, D for SAP Kernel, E for Transaction Log and F for SAP Data.
    In which drive should I allocate for swap space and tempdb? Of course for better performance I should have got separate hard disk for these, but unfortunately I can't.
    Any suggestion.
    BTW, my platform is Windows 2003 Enterprise and SQL Server 2005.

  • Need to Increase swap and /tmp space

    Hi All,
    I have linux server with <b>redhat 5.6 64 bit</b> and i am installing <b>oracle 11g r2</b> but in pre-checks of oracle it says that you have less space then oracle pre-requisite.
    <b>so i need to increase /tmp space as well as swap space.</b>

    Thanks,

    How much swapspace and tmp do you have?
    How much physical RAM do you have installed?
    Swap is usually a partition, but you can also use a swapfile.
    For instance:
    In order to create a 4 GB swapfile /swapfile:
    # dd if=/dev/zero of=swapfile bs=1024 count=4194304
    # mkswap /swapfile
    # swapon /swapfile
    add "/swapfile swap swap defaults 0 0" to /etc/fstab
    /swapfile - will create a file named 'swapfile' in the '/' directory. You can name any valid filename, e.g. /swap/myfile.swap
    The entry in fstab will make swap available at next reboot. You can use 'swapon -a' to enable all swaps from /etc/fstab right away without a restart of the system.
    Regarding tmp, you can try to create a symbolic link of /tmp to another directory on your disk. You should do this best in single user mode or with no applications running. e.g.:
    # mv /tmp /tmp2
    # ln -s /usr/tmp /tmp
    # restart the system
    or specify a different temp directory for the Oracle user:
    # export TMPDIR=/usr/tmp

    No, it is not. But are ypou running arch from an encrypted filesystem? Otherwise it would be pojntless. Anyway the normal swap is not encrypted either, at least by default.

  • SWAP space and RAM size

    Hi all,
         However there is no specific measurement for providing SWAP space,there is a ganeral rule says that "SWAP space must be twice the amount of RAM"...Why this specific value(twice of RAM)..Why it cant be the thrice amount? May i know what is the reason for telling this rule?
    Please can anyone tell me?
    Jasmine

    Hi
    The minimum requirement should be twice the size of RAM.This is because when a core dump occurs the whole active process avaulable in RAM will be written as a core file .the file will be initially written in the swap.The swap has to hold the full amount of memory and inturn swap will also have some files active.So as a minimum requirement you should have twice the amount of RAM as Swap Space.If you have a high storage and you dont know what to do give to to swap,No issue in that.

  • Swap space problem on Windows XP

    I'm trying to install BI Publisher on Windows XP from a zip file downloaded last week (version 10.1.3.3.2). However after starting setup.exe in the install directory I get the message that my swap space = 0 Mb while 500 Mb is required. After this the installation procedure quits.
    I haven't got a clue as what the installer is referring to (swap on windows?) but I have plenty of room om my two (logical) disks, no spaces in the directory name from which I start the installer (D:\download\bipublisher\Windows\OBI\install) and about 1.5 Gb of memory free.
    Any hints what to do would be appreciated.

    Hi Mjb001,
    In computer operating systems that have their main memory divided into pages, paging (sometimes called swapping) is a transfer of pages between main memory and an auxiliary store, such as hard disk drive.[1] Paging is an important part of virtual memory implementation in most contemporary general-purpose operating systems, allowing them to easily use disk storage for data that does not fit into physical RAM. Paging is usually implemented as a task built into the kernel of the operating system.
    Windows 3.x creates a hidden file named 386SPART.PAR or WIN386.SWP for use as a swap file. It is generally found in the root directory, but it may appear elsewhere (typically in the WINDOWS directory). Its size depends on how much swap space the system has (a setting selected by the user under Control Panel → Enhanced under "Virtual Memory"). Please check this file.

    - 2 GB - 8 GB = equal to the size of RAM
    - Greater than 8GB = 0.75 times the size of RAM
    Currently we have a issue of swap space getting used up nearly 100%. The system was out of memory and can't run any applicationThat is unusual and should not be happening when you have what seems to be an excess of memory available. This could mean some kind of bug (memory leakage for example), or it could mean plain old fashion abuse of memory. Like PL/SQL code that attempts to bulk fetch a few million rows from the database with a single go.
    On checking Metalink note, it said its an unhandled Oracle exception; have to increase the swap space.Wrong IMO (unless you were not following the recommended swap size factor). If you have have a giant swap area..moving the wall a few meters away (by increasing swap) will only enable you to run faster into it - I doubt that this is the intent of that Metalink note.
    On increasing the swap space, and restarting the instance, the system was normal.
    Now why does oracle use up all the swap space and what can be the workaround to avoid this in future?Oracle only use what is needed to perform the client requests that it receives. If the client request a mountain of data to be moved/processed, Oracle will try to oblige. If that mountain topples and crushes server resources, it is not Oracle that is to blame for trying to do exactly what was requested from it.

    Hello,
    Part of the HS_ERR_PID says:
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (1.6.0_01-b06 mixed mode)
    Does that mean you are running CF8 without updater1 applied? If updater1 was there I would expect JVM 1.6.0_04. Give that is correct you could apply updater1 and once that is done even update the JVM to a more current version. I see Java Dev Kit 1.6.0_23 is current, I have successfully used CF8 with 1.6.0_22.
    There might be some interesting detail in the coldfusion-out.log file which likely is in [CF]\runtime\logs or [Jrun]\logs pending server or multiserver.
    HTH, Carl.

    https://forums.oracle.com/message/6646295#6646295
    I have seen in the above discussions that reducing the the heap size (Xmx) would give a solution, can any one please suggest me how much do I have to reduce my Xmx.
    Here are my log details.

    Hi
    Out of memory they can result from different causes:
    - The application is consuming too many resources inappropriately
    - The application is opening and not enough threads are closing, leaving no space for the JVM
    - You lose the connection with database, causing the connection pool is saturated, which makes the memory of the container is depleted and reaches its peak.
    - The container does not have sufficient resources or is not tuned to meet the load generated. But would recommend to discard the above before using this option, because when using this option could work around the problem but could not really be attacking the cause.
