Zooming in on portion of clip (person) smoothly?

As most of you know already I am working on a highlight video for a college football player.  I am trying to zoom in on this player at the end of a particular play - when the camera actually follows a different player in the opposite direction.
I searched the forum, and found Hunt's instructions - to select the clip - click on edit effect, and then use the motion to zoom/scale and then use the position to pan.
However -- I only want to do this at the very end of this particular clip.  So - I split the last few seconds of the clip into a few smaller clips to apply the scale/zoom & position effects.
This results in a bit of a choppy clip -- because to zoom in and pan to this player, the effects have to be gradually increased (as the camera is moving the other direction).
Is there any way to "smooth" these together?  Or am I simply doing this totally wrong to begin with??
Thanks guys!!!
Kim

I'm sure Bill intended for you to keyframe the zoom. If you put a Motion keyframe on your Properties panel timeline where you want your zoom to begin and then, a few seconds later, increase the Scale and Position to highlight your player, you'll get a smooth zoom in, starting at the point of the first keyframe.

  • How do I invert a selection in iMovie 11/ delete unused portions of clips

I want to delete unused portions of clips:
In iMovie 11 an orange bar appears at the bottom of a clip to show that that portion of the clip is being used in a project.
If I click on the orange bar, the yellow clip selection extends to that portion of the clip.
I want to invert the selection so that the portion of the clip that is not used is selected so that I can reject it and later delete unused portions.
If there is another way to do that then great...
    Thanks
    David

I think it might be easier to first finish the project with all that extra video clip lying around and then use the Space Saver to tidy things up. It's under the File Menu and is always done at the very end when you have already Finalized your project.
    From the iMovie Help:
In the Event Library, select one or more Events.
To select more than one Event at a time, press Command as you click Event names.
    Choose File > Space Saver.
The File menu appears in a light gray bar across the top of your computer screen.
    Select any of the following:
To reject all of the video that hasn’t been added to an iMovie project, select “Not added to any project.”
To reject all of the video that you haven’t marked as “favorite,” select “Not marked as Favorite.”
To reject all of the video that you haven’t marked with a keyword, select “Not marked with a keyword.”
Click “Reject and Review.”The view changes to show only the rejected clips in the selected Events.
*Note: This is not the full listing of Help for the Space Saver function but you get the idea. It seems as though Apple thinks it's a much better use of your time to put off the house keeping tasks like cleaning up unused video until after you have Finalized the project.

  • FCPX - Viewing portions of clips used

    Hi
Once you've imported clips into the FCPX event library, is there some way to view which portions of clips have been used in a project? In iMovie, used clips have an orange line running through them in the Event Library...

Right now, you have to manually take care of this by adding a keyword to anything you add to the timeline (you can also make it a "favorite" by pressing 'F'). Then in the event browser you can choose that keyword (or choose to only see "Favorite" clips) to see that content. If you use 'F', you would see a green line, which is most close to what you describe in iMovie. Be aware though, if you trim the clips in the timeline, that doesn't get reflected in the event browser.
Once you have added a clip to the timeline, you can select it, and press shift-F (match frame) to have it reselected in the event browser. This would let you retro-actively add a keyword or make it a favorite clip.

  • Maximum Zoom not appearing when stabilizing clip

I've seen videos and various posts indicating I can adjust the maximum zoom in the clip tab of the inspector screen to adjust how much or how little stabilization is applied to a clip. However, I don't have a maximum zoom slider below the stabilization option in the inspector screen. The smooth clip motion box is checked, and I have noticed that the clip is less jerky but would like to adjust it more.
I'm using 8.0.2 of iMovie, if that helps. Any ideas on why the maximum zoom slider isn't appearing?

OK I see the problem. On your Picture 1, you have selected a clip that includes the red squiggly lines. These will not stabilize, so the whole clip will not stabilize. In Picture 2, you have selected a clip that has no red squiggly lines, so the slider appears.
The solution is to subdivide the clip selected in picture one. You can select the frames that do not have the red squiggly line with a yellow border, and then click Edit/Split Clip (or right-click/Split Clip). Now you will be able to apply stabilization to the portion with no red lines. Repeat as necessary until you have separated out all the good clips. You can leave the red-line clips in your movie, but they will not stabilize.
It may help to set the thumbnail slider at 1/2 second. This will let you select the exact frame where the red line ends. You can move it back to 5 seconds when you have finished splitting the clip.
Also, go into iMovie Preferences and put a check next to "Diplay Time as hh:mm:ss:frames". This will let you edit to the frame level. It looks like you currently have it set to allow you to edit only to the nearest 10th of a second.

  • How Can I Zoom in Further Into a Clip after a Crop?

I want to further crop a clip so I can focus on one portion of it, but the crop option has its rectangle limit. Is there anyway I can further zoom into my clip after the initial crop?
    Thanks,
    Kev

indeed, the crop-tool allows a max (min?) of about a quarter of original size..
    workaround:
    • avoid the iM crop-tool
    • use any pic processor (Preview, Pixelmator, PSE..) to crop your wanted area..
    • import pre-processed pic into your project..-
ah, and Welcome, klopez89, to the  iMovie boards..

  • Is there a clearer video tutorial on zooming and panning in on clip than this?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0kt60VAyb8&feature=related
This is sort of helpful, but despite over thre hours work, I cannot get my clip to do what I want.
I need Video Tutorials, not text instruction. i'm dyslexic and simply see gobbldeegupe when looking at written instructions.
    Thanks, everyone.
This is the clip in question...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6LWzo5n_sg
I want to zoom in to avoid seeing my lady at right of screen, who basically stopped acting in the scene.   The zoom in will be effective anyway, since we are zooming in on an annoyed man. The image would need to zoom in, but not the center of the image. So a pan up also needs to be applied.

That Tutorial covers the basic mechanics of a Pan & Zoom with Keyframes on the Fixed Effects>Motion>Scale (Zoom) and Motion>Position (Pan).
The next step is to learn about Interpolation in Keyframes, where one can adjust how things appear. The Keyframes, that the author used were Linear, so they start at full-speed and end at full-speed. Through Interpolation, one can adjust how the motions begin and end. The Help File covers Keyframe Interpolation ver well, and as there are quite a few choices, with different results, is important when one chooses to alter Interpolation.
What aspects would you like more detail on?
Only thing that I saw, that I would have included, would have been near the end, when the author click-drags on the last Keyframes, one at a time. That can be done, but one can also Lasso the Keyframes, and drag them all together. I'd have shown each way. I would also have shown the "scrubby" characteristic of the numerical coordinate box, as that can be useful too. Many operations in PrPro have more than one way to do things, and to cover each, does make a better tutorial.
Let us know what else could/should be added, or where you are having an issue.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - rather than the graphical change in Position, that the author used, I usually rely on the numbers, but there is nothing wrong with the graphical method - just personal choice and how one likes to work.

  • Pan/Zoom of Jpegs & Tiffs on FCP: not smooth, bad resolution, artifacts..?

I'm running FCP 6 on an old G5 with 2Gigs of Memory. I'm trying to manipulate still photos for a personal project and the quality is not good. Simple zooming often causes a "stuttering" of the image during movement. The images are not sharp & clear and there is a moire effect as the scan lines of the picture zoom. Certain pixels sometitmes seem to take on a life of their own-showing intermittant black and white pixel frame-long dropouts.
I've applied de-interlace, deflicker, gauzian blur, all to no avial-and the pictures get blurred.
    Can anyone offer any suggestions?

FCP does a lousy job if there is massive scaling involved. Best to resize in Photoshop to the smallest pixel dimensions that will work with your movements.
    Stay away from jpegs.
fwiw - re image flickering -
The flickering is an artifact of the interlaced nature of video. It is a result of very thin (often horizontal) elements that exist on one scanline as is common in text or titling. This can also be the case in images with great deal of detail with high contrast as well as when when you are engaged in pan/zoom moves on stills.
As the alternate fields play, the flashing element is essentially being turned on/off. The basic strategy is to get the element to exist over two scanlines so it is refreshed every time the field plays or to reduce the amount of contrast so the difference between ON and OFF is not noticeable.
Before you start any of these steps listed below, make sure you are viewing your material on an appropriate monitor. If you are working in an NTSC/PAL interlaced format (eg DV) you need an external TV monitor - not a computer screen. Without the appropriate device, you are playing blind.
Things to try (In increasing order of image degradation)
    • (in FCP) field order>none
    • (in FCP or Photoshop) reduce whites by 10% - reduces overly bright areas
    • (in FCP) flicker filter - minimum
    • (in Photoshop) motion blur>vertical> .2 - .5 pixels - blurs vertically only
    • (In FCP or Photoshop) Gaussian blur> .2 - .5 pixels -blurs both horizontally as well as vertically
    • (in FCP or Photoshop) deinterlace - throws away half the image and is generally not appropriate on scanned images
*Remember: Unless you are viewing your work in the appropriate external NTSC/PAL monitor, you are playing blind.* The computer monitor only shows you a proxy image.
One final thought, if you have slowed your material significantly, and have not used some sort of frame blending/optical flow processing, you may be simply duplicating frames to create the additional material to pad the playback. The flashing/stuttering you see is the result of this.
    good luck.

  • Using effects on only a portion of clip

Is the best way to use an effect on only a portion of a clip to use the blade tool?  the reason i ask is i am trying not to split up clips because i usually add in cross dissolve transitions at the end to all clips.  I then need to find the split clips and remove the transitions.
    Any comments are appreciated,

I once thought that the range tool could do that. But it does not. As far as I know therer is no option other than Blade tool. Maybe you coould turn it into compond clip after using the blade. Others may have the right solution.

  • Add effect to portion of clip?

I would like a particular clip to alternate between a couple of different effects and understand that I can use the blade tool to split the clips and apply effects in that manner, but is there a way to apple effects to a portion of a single clip without splitting the clip?
    Tia,
    Bill

I don;t like to split a clip unless I have to. You can add keyframes to animate the values of effects. Most effects have an Amount parameter. Some do not. What you want to do depends on exactly what effect you're talking about.

  • The timeline on my Mac zooms when I add a clip to it.

The Expert view timeline sometimes zooms in if you drag a clip from Finder or the Project Assets panel to the Expert view timeline. The Expert view timeline can also zoom in if you drag the clip handles to trim a clip.
This behavior is most obvious when working with Adobe Premiere Elements on MacBook Pro with retina display.

  • Archiving a project without unused portions of clips

I have a library that contains almost all of my unedited video files. Some of the videos are very large quicktime files (an hour in length). I have a project in that library that I want to archive (consolidate?) to an external drive for backup  I'd like to copy the project to a new library (on an external drive) with only the used portion of the video.  I think FCP7 used to allow that and you could choose how long a "handle" of unused video you wanted to include.  Is there a way with FCPX to avoid including the entire hour long file and only archive the portions used in the project extra handles for future edit changes?
    Thanks

FCP x doesn't have the equivalent of Media Manager. There are strategies for minimizing archive sizes like trashing render files and transcoded media.
There is also a third party app for archiving but I don't recall the name and I'm not at a computer for the next few days. I don't think that app saves selections of source clips either but it does simplify the process. Do a search. Good luck.

  • Why does Firefox remove the top portion of my Persona when I'm not showing the Menu Bar?

Under View > Toolbars you can show and hide the Toolbars you want, but when you choose to hide the Menu Bar, it cuts off about a centimeter of my Persona. A centimeter doesn't sound like much but on an image that is only about 10 centimeters tall in the first place, removing one from the top makes the picture unbalanced. Personas that don't have a boarder are even worse because it actually cuts off part of the detail of the image. Could that be fixed in a future patch?

It still chops off the top of the personas :( I think I'll uninstall v8 and go back to v3 Firefox, those were the glory days! haha

  • Only Portion of Clip Importing

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out why Premiere doesn't like this clip.
I'm trying to deinterlace several DV clips. The deinterlacer I'm using is through AviSynth (and VirtualDub), and I'm converting the DV footage to Lagarith. This deinterlacer converts the 29.97 fps to 59.94. So anyway, I'm working with six clips of varying lengths. They all convert fine, and work properly when I import them into Premiere except for one. That one, no matter what I try, always imports only the first 2 and half minutes and that's it. I tried the conversion with audio and without, converting the frame rate within VirtualDub back to 29.97... nothing works. No matter what, the video only imports 2.5 min. Now, if I import the original DV footage it works fine. But for the life of me I can't figure out why the other five clips work fine, but this one refuses. They were all captured at the exact same time with the exact same settings.
    Ideas?

I think I got it fixed. For some reason, even though in VirtualDub, the frame rate was set to Current (59.94) Premiere wasn't liking the outcome. I had to set the change the rate to 59.94 and it took. Still weird Premiere liked the other files, but found this one to be a problem. Oh well.
