Check Disk Runs on Plug in

Everytime I plug my Ipod into the firewire connector, it starts running the check disk program on the Ipod and the Ipod is not recognized by ITunes or even on the desktop. Although the checkdisk program says everything is okay on the disk, if I touch a button on the Ipod (when it is plugged into the Imac) the checkdisk program starts running all over again.
This all started a few weeks ago. I ran the Ipod updater and reset everything and loaded some music. There were some initial glitches uploading music from Itunes, but everything seemed to work okay. Then, the Ipod started freezing during songs on playback. At first, when I plugged in, the check disk ran, but the Ipod was eventually recognized by my mac. Now, the Ipod does not appear at all, but just runs the checkdisk. When the checkdisk is finished running, if you press a button it just runs again.
Interestingly, this all corresponded roughly in time with my upgrade from a 2002 G4 Imac to a 2006 Intel core duo. My Ipod is 20GB from 2002 (pre-dock).
Any ideas or should I just upgrade to a new pod?

If the disks on the servers are mapped as networks drives on your PC then the disk size and free space shows up in "My Computer" if you set it to show details. (At least it does on Win2000 on the computer i'm sending this from).

  • Disk consistency and check disk problem

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655-S5212 laptop. Recently, I have been getting a message whenever I turn on the laptop, that says that there is a disk consistency issue and that a check disk should be run. However, if I let the check disk run, it always freezes at phase 2 of the three phases, and I have to do a hard shutdown. I can skip the check disk, and the laptop will boot up, although it has spontaneously re-booted itself a couple of times after I have been working on it a while.
My questions are: what is causing the disk consistency problem and how do I fix it, especially since the check disk doesn't seem to be working correctly. The first phase does identify some errors.
    Thank you.

    First things first...
If you haven't yet, it's important to back up the whole disk. Best to create an image on an external drive.

  • Ran Windows 7 Check Disk on iPod - Songs Now Missing?

I posted this on another forum and didn`t get a response so I`ll ask it here:
Problem description: I connected my 80GB iPod Video to my netbook and Windows 7 came up asking me if I wanted to scan and fix problems on my iPod. I foolishly said okay and told it to, selecting both Automatically Fix File System Errors and Scan For and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors. It took about an hour to complete and afterwards when it connected in iTunes, it didn't recognize it despite recognizing it before check disk. I've connected it dozens of times to my netbook with no problems before today. iTunes began syncing (which it wasn't supposed to do) and freed up about 7GB of space on it before I realized what it was doing. Right now, in iTunes, Winamp and the iPod itself, no songs, videos, playlists or anything show up in it. iTunes claims 66GB is being taken up by "Other" with 7.5GB of "Free Space." Now, when I go into the iPod through windows explorer and go into the folder iPod_Control, all the music still seems to be there and I can listen to the songs in Winamp by opening them from iPod_Control, so why can't iTunes or the iPod find the files? Is there a good data recovery fix for this? Is there some hopefully easy fix I don't see?
Attempted fixes: Looked for iPod recovery programs, saw a trillion listed on Google of varying degrees of authenticity. Googled for ipod-related check disk problems and found a blog saying it erased his playcounts (oh no). Tried disconnecting and reconnecting iPod. Tried disconnecting, resetting and reconnecting iPod. Tried rebooting computer and reconnecting iPod. Tried connecting iPod to different computer it connected to before. Same story each time.
Recent changes: Windows 7 Check Disk, that's all I've done to it. It worked fine yesterday, last night and this morning until I ran Check Disk.
Operating system: 32-Bit Windows 7, evaluation copy, Build 7100.
System specs: Asus 1005HA: Intel Atom N280, 2GB Crucial Notebook Memory, Mobile Intel Express 945GME, 160GB HDD. iPod: Model MA448C, 5.5 Generation 80GB Video iPod, Software Version 1.3. iTunes Version 8.2.1.6
I have Googled and read the FAQ: Yes
What would cause this to happen? Why can't anything see the songs unless I manually open them? How do I fix this?

After countless days trying to solve this problem, I feel I can now add to the few solutions presented on the various forums of the internet. I'll post here because 1: i'm a mac user for everyday life although like most have as many pc's as well. 2: I already have a login for these forums!
okay so i tried everything from re-burns to usb install (which I could not complete because removable drives are not recognized by xp and I don't have a vista system). The problem for me ended up being because the DVD drive was plugged into the primary master ide channel. My hard drive for the unit i was installing windows on is sata and was configured as such (not bridged into IDE channel by bios). So in a nutshell it seems like the hard drive and the DVD drive are nit picky in regards to the IDE configuration of the drives themselves. This won't help for virtualization on a mac pro I realize but nonetheless is food for thought hopefully for all the people searching for " windows 7 install cd/dvd device driver missing " in their search engine!
Oh boy one more reason to love mac's

  • External Hard Drives and Check Disk

I have an external NTFS hard drive that for some reason when I go to do an Error-Check with Window's Check Disk feature it says it can't check the disk while it is in use and I then proceed to schedule a scan at start up.
This is an External USB device and it appears you can not do scheduled scans on them.  I restart the computer and nothing happens, no scan.
Can we get some support for scheduled scans on external hard drives?

Did you try the CHKDSK /X option? CHKDSK /? gives you a list of options.
    CHKDSK [volume[[path]filename]]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/I] [/C] [/L[:size]] [/B]
volume          Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
                      mount point, or volume name.
filename        FAT/FAT32 only: Specifies the files to check for fragmentation.
/F              Fixes errors on the disk.
/V              On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of every file
                      on the disk.
On NTFS: Displays cleanup messages if any.
/R              Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information
                      (implies /F).
/L:size         NTFS only:  Changes the log file size to the specified number
of kilobytes.  If size is not specified, displays current
                      size.
/X              Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid
                      (implies /F).
/I              NTFS only: Performs a less vigorous check of index entries.
/C              NTFS only: Skips checking of cycles within the folder
                      structure.
/B              NTFS only: Re-evaluates bad clusters on the volume
                      (implies /R)
The /I or /C switch reduces the amount of time required to run Chkdsk by
skipping certain checks of the volume.
    Thanks,
    -Saravana

Click on the hard drive on the desktop, then File > Get Info. What does it say about permissions?  If this is just a data drive you may want to consider "ignore ownership on this volume".
Otherwise I can only say I have not been reading good things about Seagate drives recently.  I have some of their rock-solid ones from about 10 years ago (still running well), but now...?

  • Where is check disk info on a x61s

Any machine I have ever run check disk on provides the results in the event manager under an application listing of WinLogIn 1001.
When I set checkdisk to run on a Lenovo, there is not a WinLogIn entry to be found.
There is a PerfLoad - but that does not contain the check disk info.
Where does Lenovo place the results of checkdisk?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply.  I checked the thread you pointed to.
This machine shows no entries for wininit, or winlogin.  I checked the entire span of time during which we rebooted.
This was also true on a Lenovo laptop that is not having problems at this time.
To make matters worse, on the laptop that is having problems, if we are able to see an event log at all we can only view it quickly for as we scroll through it we get hit with a message that the events logs are corrupted and the window where the log resides goes blank.
We ended up running PC-Doctor... full test of the hard drive (the one that takes hours).. and there were no errors reported.  Other hardware tests were also clear... so it appears to be a software issue.
So now I am trying to find out how to extract/obtain an XP install disk (We have the rescue and recovery image file, but no install CD) so we can slipstream SP3 so we can run sfc /scannow.  Started another thread for that issue.

Amazing steps you've done so far! The great news is this is very unlikely an issue with your iPhone.
I've run into a similar issue lately as well. I narrowed it down to one song that was causing 30 songs not to sync. I removed the song from the sync list (unchecked it) and all 29 songs were able to sync.
You may be running into a similar issue. This may be a problem with this version of iTunes, an issue with one song or a group of songs; hard to know for sure. It's important to narrow down and isolate the cause. Most imporantly get that music back on there!
The way to narrow down the casue add just a few songs at a time (even 1, just to get that first sync finished). Manually syncing is what you'll need here.
Plug in your iPhone, on the Summary screen (shows a picture of your iPhone, the iOS version, Restore iPhone....; etc). Under the Options area at the bottom choose to Manually Manage Videos and Music then choose Apply in the lower right. The music that's on your iPhone now should be removed from your iPhone now. You're now able to sync music manually.
The link below explains how to drag the songs from the iTunes library on the computer on to your iPhone which will start the sync. Add just one song just to see if you can get 1 of those hundreds of songs on there. If you can, awesome! Keep adding until you find the song or group of songs that are causing this issue.

Please let me know how things are going.

  • Didnt used check disk utility on install & want to reinstall from scratch

Things are buggy so figured a reinstall this time using the Check disk utlity thingy - anyone know what I need to do?

OK, I think we can narrow this down.
My first inclination is to think that you might have some directory corruption that's interfering with how your Mac is running. The comment above to back up your data is right on. Do that first.
Once that's done, try booting to your install disk, selecting Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, and then select your hard drive. Pick "Verify disk," and if it needs repair, choose "Repair disk" - this may resolve the issue.
Look and see if you have any third party addons that need updating, or applications that run at login (you can find them in System Preferences, Accounts, login items) and disable them. See if that helps.
If worse comes to worst, you may need to erase your drive and reinstall from scratch, and then restore from your backup, but let's see how the other steps go first.
The "Check Install Disk" is verifying the DVD, not your hard drive, so that's not likely to help at all in this situation.
Post back after running Disk Utility and let us know the results.

  • HDD Protection - Check Disk / Defrag Problems

I believe the Toshiba HDD Protection utility has my hard drive write protected. I can't run a check disk (it cancels on its own) and I can't run a defrag. When I run check disk in repair mode, the error message specifically indicates the drive is write protected. Other attempts through other means indicates the drive is currently in use by another process.
I can boot in safe mode and the system responds. When logged in as a user the system is really slow. The system locks up when trying to disabled HDD Protection or responding to the pop-up that the head is temporarily moved to a safe position.

    Hi
Toshiba drivers and tools released for Win 8 or Win 8.1 are not fully comparable with the Toshiba software available for Win 7 OS.
Some drivers and tools which are available for Win 8 dont exist for Win 7 system.
For example; the Accelerometer Utilities or HDD Protection Utility were released especially for Win 8 / Win 8.1 system and are not available for Win 7.
But for Win 7 you will find the Toshiba VAP (value added package) and this package installs a range of important utilities which are essential component of Windows system and this VAP is required to make the other TOSHIBA original programs work properly.
Therefore you should install the VAP as first Toshiba tool to ensure that other software like HDD/SSD Alert Utility or PC Health Monitor

  • Checking Disk Consistency on Startup

    Hello everyone,
The past few days I have been occasionally getting the Checking Disk Consistency message on startup. It is to my understanding that this is a sign of a potentially dieing harddrive. My laptop is only about a year and a half old, so I sure as heck hope my harddrive isn't dieing already. I'm at work right now so I'm not 100% sure of my model, but I believe it is a Toshiba Satellite P500/P505.
I have had absolutely no problems with my laptop until about 2 days ago, when I started getting these messages. My virus protection is Kaspersky 2011, which has resulted in 0 viruses the past year and a half.
My laptop does start up, despite the error. Of the 4 times this has occurred to be thus far, one of those times my computer was effectively a vegetable. Froze when trying to do anything (except for startup processes) and even froze when I told it to shut down.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this is still the case, but I seem to recall that Kaspersky breaks the heck out of chkdsk. I found a twenty eight page thread on the topic over there, http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=14995&hl=iswift, thought it does look a wee bit dated.
EDIT: This may be relevant and I certainly recommend giving it a shot.
    Chckdsk
Start Windows in "Safe mode with Command Prompt"
    Type:
    chdsk /f
and hit enter. (you could also do /r for completeness' sake, though that will take a bit longer.)
Chkdsk will probably want to schedule a check at the next boot, say Yes
    then Type
    shutdown -r -t 01
Your machine will reboot, and should run a chkdsk on start without conflict. If at that point it still hang, the issue is probably a bit more severe than just a program conflict.

When trying to update to 4.0.1 it locks up when checking for updates to plug-in. This causing Firefox not to work. Why?
I am running windows 7. I have tryed uninstalling and reinstalling and every time it locks up at the same point, when it is checking for updates to plug-ins. I have run troublt shooting and it tels me :Incompatible Application. Why??

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See:
    * [[Basic Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile]]
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)
    See:
