CS3 Outline Stroke not working?

Hi there,
I am using Illustrator CS3 on my mac, and when I use the outline stroke command, no matter what brush i've used for the stroke, it makes right angles. so if i use a round brush and make a line, so it looks like a skinny rounded rectangle - when i do the outline stroke command, i get a rectangle. i know this worked properly for me in cs2, but i'm not sure if it has worked right for me in cs3. any thoughts on what might be wrong? thanks!!

You shouldn't be using Outline Stroke on a live Brush path. Use Expand Appearance. (Often good to follow with the Merge Pathfinder.)
If you just want to outline a uniform-weight path with rounded caps and joins, you don't need the Brush. Just give the path a thick stroke, set its caps and joins to round and *then* use Outline Stroke. (Bugs in CS3 notwithstanding.)

so I just create a straight, uniform line and press Effect > Path > Outline Stroke... but nothing happens

thanks for your reply...
the line has a black, 10 pt, uniform stroke on it.... I click the outline stroke command and nothing happens... an fx does appear in the appearance palette, but when I click the Outline Stroke item there nothing opens... every other effect opens a dialog window...

CS3 Outline Stroke Problems

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this. But since upgrading to CS3, I've got a serious problem moving the points from a stroke I changed to an object with the Outline Stroke command. I use this quite often, since I like the control it gives me over the look of a line.
But with CS3, when I move some point at the end of the line, it turns out that there are sometimes even 3 overlapping points. This is very annoying. I could lasso select, but then, of course, I need to be in outline view or else I select the underlying object. The Clean Up command does not help. This is really not workable. It used to work so smoothly, and now there's overlapping points all over the objects.
I've been looking to see if there is any documentation about this. But I cannot find anything. Have there been any changes in how the outline is created? Are there points added when you move one? Are there new settings / options I have not found yet that can reset the behavior to CS2-and-before style?

Are you referring to paths in general, or paths created by Outline Stroke?
If the former, I haven't noticed that happening at all. I see exactly the opposite. Due to the larger hit radius and the preference given to anchor point hits over direction point hits, as well as the highlighting of anchor points within the hit radius, it is
easier in CS3 to be sure of moving the anchor point instead of accidentally hitting the adjacent bezier edge or a direction handle that happens to be very short. (Of course if the mouse is outside the hit radius of any anchor point but within the hit radius of a bezier curve or direction control point, it will adjust direction handles instead, but that has always happened, and the anchor point hit radius is bigger now.)
But maybe you're making different kinds of paths than I do. I do not know what you mean by a "hard corner point" vs just a corner point. Do you noticed anything that distinguishes the anchor points that move as expected from the cases where the direction handle moves instead?

CS3 Outline Stroke Parallel Lines Bug

Hello everyone...
I'll try to explain my issue as best as possible. I am using Illy CS3 on Win XP Pro.
I am creating installation instructions for an electronic product and need to show wire routing.
I created an art brush of two parallel black lines two different ways (two black lines and two black lines with a white line between them) and am getting the same result when I apply the Object>Path>Outline Stroke command.
What is happening is instead of Outlining each of the strokes and individual paths, Illustrator is outlining the space between the two strokes as one filled, closed path.
Perhaps this is expected behavior. However, Illustrator CS4 (which I use at home on a Mac) outlines the stroke as I would expect it to with the two lines as individual paths.
Does anyone know of a workaround or any way for Illustrator CS3 to behave in a similar way to how CS4 handles the strokes?

I can't follow your description, and can't replicate the problem trying to follow it.

Explain "two black lines and two black lines with a white line between them".
Brush 1 built from:
Two parallel open paths, each with a black stroke?
Brush 2 built from:
Three parallel open paths, equally distributed, the two outermost ones having a black stroke, the middle one having a white stroke?
When you say "situated between them" are you talking about stacking order (paths with different weight strokes stacked in same location) or spacing (three parallel paths distributed vertically)?
You say you've created these two ArtBrushes and are then applying Object>Path>Outline Stroke. Are you in fact talking about outlining the strokes to the artwork
before converting it to an ArtBrush, or applying Outline Stroke to a path to which you already applied the ArtBrush?
Describe EXACTLY, step-by-step, command-by-command, the simplest steps necessary to replicate the problem. Don't use ambiguous terms like "line". Use the terms of the program.

Bridge CS3 "Edit Find" not working after optimizing cache.

Power PC G5
Mac OSX v.10.4.11
3GB RAM
Photoshop CS3
After optimizing the cache, my Edit>Find feature does not work. I looked into the Bridge Preferences and could not find anything under Thumbnails or Cache that can turn it back on. Please advise.

Make sure you have Bridge 2.1.1.9.
Purge the cache for each folder through the Tools menu in Bridge.

Photoshop cs3 Trial is not Working!

Okay, I've downloaded the cs3 30 days trial. After installation, i launched it and it said 'problem with trial...a problem was encountered while trying to load the trial period for photoshop cs3.' What does this actually mean? What should i do?

Could you please check the Photoshop version? In Photoshop, please go to the Help menu and select About Photoshop... In the dialog, it will say "Version" followed by the version #. The Reflow PS Plug-in is activated in Version 14.1.
If you have a lower version, such as Version 14.0, please close Photoshop, and open the Adobe Creative Cloud application and click on the "Apps" tab. If you see an Update for Photoshop there, please install it. If not, please quit Creative Cloud (select the "gear" icon in the upper right of the Creative Cloud and and choose Quit Creative Cloud). Then restart Creative Cloud, and hopefully the Update for Photoshop will be available.
If this doesn't resolve the issue, please respond here and we'll look for another resolution. Sorry it's not working for you right away!

Dashed Stroke not working on Image Traced image?

So I'm able to use the dashed stroke normally if I create my own lines or shapes, but I'm using an image that I have image traced, expanded, and ungrouped, and I'm able to change the weight of the stroke and the brush but not apply a dashed stroke or a different brush profile, but I'm more concerned with the stroke. I haven't forgotten the gap.. What's up? Does it just not work on image traced stuff?

What tracing method did you use?
If the trace produced compound paths it is likely that you have also got duplicate paths.
You need to analyse the trace to see where the problem lies.
There is nothing about traced stuff that prevents the use of dashed strokes but if there are compound paths be aware that the compounds in their entirety will have dased stokes.
You may need to release compound paths (with the hassle that involves) to get what you want.

Dreamweaver CS3 Menu's not working

Using shortcuts or even manually clicking on the menu items
to say "Put" a file, it just doesn't work. I don't get it. It
worked fine... then (if memory serves me) when I downloaded a CS3
update to all my cs3 applications, it stopped working.
Any ideas what this is and how to fix it, besides
uninstalling the update?

Strokes Not Working

Hi everyone. I am having an issue with applying strokes to images. I have PhotoShop CS5 installed on two PCs, both from the same source download file (part of E-Learning 2 Suite).
On one PC the Edit > Stroke effect works absolutely fine, as evidenced by the first image below. However, on my second PC this has never worked - regardless of stroke size selected it puts the most tiny barely noticeable stroke around it. My way around this has been to right click on the layer, and select 'Blending Options', and apply a stroke from there. However, having worked fine, this has recently started to produced a very ugly effect around the top of the image (see second screen shot).
I have no idea why:
Edit > Stroke doesn't work on one PC.
Why my Blending Option work around on this same PC is now producing horrible results.
To illustrate, I have applied strokes to the same source graphic using my two different PCs:
PC1: Using Edit > Stroke - effect has expected.
PC2: Using Stoke from Blending Options - very ugly top of image (consistent issue regardless of source graphic).
I have tried resetting all tools, but that doesn't do any good. Does anyone have any ideas. Any help would be much appreciated.

It would appear you are correct. In the image above, I added an extra layer, filled it, and put it behind the image. That awful "smudge" effect was still there. Despite spending £100 on a set of artwork the quality is clearly erractic!
On the PC where the Edit > Stoke wasn't working, it would appear the problem was that "Preserve Transparency" was unchchecked. I always left this checked because, to me, it meant that you wanted to preserve the transparent background of a PNG image. Obviously my understaning was flawed!
Anyway, sorted! Thank you so much again.

CS3 Photoshop stroke not functioning on one image, Why?

I'm running the CS3 design premium suite on a Mac Pro 8 core with 14 gig of ram & 3 TB of hard drives with Snow Leopard 10.6.7. Been using Photoshop 7 for about 5 years and never had this problem on that.
I'm making an image in Photoshop CS3 to use as a logo on a website I'm building and all went well until I tried to put put a red stroke (1pxl) on 2 words of text. For some reason that I don't yet comprehend, the stroke is not taking. I tried opening a new window and all works well there, text & stroke wise. I have saved my work & shut down the computer a couple of times just in case there's something odd with the logo file.
As I said earlier, I've never experienced this before in Photoshop 7. I did a search on the forum here & read the FAQ's where I got the impression there were a few other people who had a similar problem. All the work has been done in Photoshop and it blows my mind that I can't reproduce it on new files (tried for the last 2 hours). There's got to be some little gotcha that I'm not aware of that's messing me up. The file itself is a little over 100K so It can't be an out of memory error (I think).
ANY help would be appreciated!!!!!

I'm not sure what I did this morning to undo the problem, but I finally achieved the desired result as follows:
I was following a tutorial on how to superimpose "fire" on an image and in getting to that point there were many duplicate layers with changes to blending layers, etc. I went back and turned every layer effect on & off to see what would change on the image. When I found that certain effects were not making a difference (even though they were enabled), I discarded them to get to the "relatively" clean layer panel in the screen shot.
There were certain effects in the tutorial that played with lighting on skin which were not needed for my purposes. I'll try it again when I'm trying to put fire on human skin, like in a wizard throwing a fireball (the actual tutorial).
It's unfortunate that I wasn't able to track down the precise culpret that prevented the layer stroke for the text, but if you have ny thoughts by all means let me know.

Aperture PS CS3/4 Aperture, not working since Snow Leopard install...

Since installing Snow Leopard today I have been unable to export/edit from Aperture to Photoshop CS3/4 and back again!!!
I have tried it with both CS3 and CS4 as I have both installed. Aperture corrupts the thumbnail on export to both apps, they then open the file in both versions of PS but when you go to save after editing you get a message saying the file is open and you can't save it!!!
It seems to me it's an obvious Snow Leopard issue as it worked perfectly before I upgraded but now I am screwed for editing until a fix is sorted, any suggestions???

I am not having that problem. I can edit with CS4 an image that was previously edited with CS4 and also one that was not previously edited at all.
Did you upgrade Aperture to 2.1.4 before Snow ?

Photoshop CS3 editing does not work in LR 2.0

Just upgraded to LR 2.0 and did the data base conversion everything works just fine. Btw, I did keep the LR 1.4 installed because I wanted to make sure I have a fallback in case I have a problem with LR 2.0.
I do however have a problem. I cannot edit images in Photoshop CS3. If I select any of the Edit in Photoshop CS3 menu options, CS3 fires up but no image is displayed in Photoshop. I did upgrade CS3 with the latest upgrades available from Adobe. I have no problems editing in CS3 under LR 1.4.
Any suggestion what may cause this?

Path Stroke not working properly CS6?

Hello, I am using a work path in Photoshop CS6 with maybe 2-300 unique lines. The issue is that when I attempt to stroke the path, only about 80% of the lines get stroked, and some are incomplete or are a slightly different (thinner) width.
Here is what I am doing to get this result: I have linked the path to a blank layer via layer>vector mask>current path, selecting the brush tool, and pressing stroke path in the layer toolbar.
Any ideas? You are appreciated!
