Dark interface?

I quite like Acrobat's new, bright look but at night I find it a little hard on the eyes. Is there any way to change at least the background colour (behind the PDF) to something darker? Having a "dark mode" for the rest on the interface would be even better!

Hi wlym,
We've heard the same request from other customers, and I would be happy to add a tally for your feedback as well. Unfortunately, the only option for changing the background now applies only to full-screen mode.
Best,
Sara

  • Save for Web darker interface

I have for a long time been an advocate for the darker interface, using it mainly in After Effects. So it's great that the CS6 apps have taken this to other apps in the Suite. However Save for Web has been missed out it seems. Anyone else think this should be able to be darkened like the rest of the PS interface?

Yup, along with ACR and others - would be nice to have a consistent UI throughout the product, The main UI and Lightroom compliment each other very well, but then you get the sudden bright flash as a non-conformer pops into view.......
I heard from Nik they are looking to match their Selective Tool to match the new Photoshop UI.....

  • Choose accent color for hovered icons when using dark interface in Bridge?

How about add the ability to choose the accent color for hovered icons when using a dark interface in Bridge?  Currently, the icon color remains orange and unchangeable.  Personally, I would prefer a blue accent color to match my system.  Any chance of making this possible in CS6?

Oh, I should add that I'm looking for solutions somewhat up-to-date and/or are related to or designed for 10.6 Snow Leonard. I did a search for answers before asking the question, and the (mostly unsatisfactory) answers I found were all from several years ago and applied to earlier versions of OSX (10.3, 10.4, etc.), and therefore no longer were relevant or usable.

  • Photoshop CS6: Dark user interface style [UI skin] like Premiere Pro or Lightroom?

For Photoshop CS6, how about add option to set a dark user interface style [UI skin]  like Premiere Pro or Lightroom?  It's very helpful to be able to work on images in a dark interface because it enhances our eyes' perception of color.  Can this be possible in CS6?

Actually, there is some value in changing the background color.
Contrast of the image with surrounding gray values does affect your perception of tone and saturation in the image.
So you want to view the image with a surround that comes close to the value that the final result will be viewed in.
For print, that means a 50% gray or lighter surround (mimicking the world).
For video that means something darker but not really black.
And for movies you want a nearly black surround.
Unfortunately, OS controls/widgets aren't designed to do that.  Premiere and AE managed it by creating all their own controls and not using OS controls.

  • Why does InDesign interface keep reverting to dark?

I keep having to go into preferences and reset the interface to the Light theme, because whenever I open a new InDesign session after switching the computer on it reverts to the Dark UI. I have saved my Workspace and Synced with CC and it still keeps going back to dark. And if I try to Sync rather than reset prefs, I would have expected a conflict with the cloud pref settings, but there is nothing - it just stays dark! Also when this happens I notice that the "Recent" documents list is gone from the file menu.

I hate the dark interface. I've written long explanations of how I think the dark interface infiltrated the graphics applications.
However, Adobe put a lot of effort into the dark interface, and many photographers wanted it for Photoshop and then Illustrator and InDesign. And given all that work, I don't think they will change the default.
Just like they're not going to change the default unit of measurement from picas to inches. And believe me, most people I see have no idea what a pica is, much less how to use it.

  • Photoshop Elements 9 - user interface brightness

WTF? Where is an option to change a brightness of PE's interface?
This is really annoying to work again with dark interface. I hate it.
    Hey. Adobe!
Please make quickly an upgrade to this option. I feel I am very dissapointed with this upgrade and all great new stuffs doesn't compansate this big loose.
BTW. new help system works horrible slow! (I have fast connection if someone want to ask).
    Not good. Not good.

Yes. The truth might be that there is new interface core. PE9 works and launches really faster and better. That is great!
But base question - what the difference can make an interface's colour? NONE.
Believe me, this is not matter what colour is used in any core.
Just it looks like that Adobe forgot about that option.
I always hate dark backgrounds with white fonts ... this is horrible to work with for me.
I work many hours per day with images and I switch between different applications.
And switching often between "dark screen" and "bright screen" really makes mash from the eyes. This is horrible.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 interface

First off I would like to say I'm new here! and finding this forum very hard to use? cannot even paste text why?
anyway here is my question/ observation
I have just downloaded the new version of Photoshop Elements 11  (I've been useing sinnce version 6)
I cannot begin to discribe how dissapointed I was to see the UI, to me it looks and feels like a peice of software from about ten years ago with the large icons everywhere, or at the very least a very cheap copy of Photoshop elements.
I uninstalled it after about a hour, I didnt like it at all! so as far as Elements goes i will be sticking to Elements 9, I will be going back to Paintshop Photo pro from Corel if this is the best effort Adobe has to offer!
I realy cannot understand why Adobe has employed a 10 year old to design the look of the UI
Is there a setting to change the UI to a adult theme like before???
Or is this the new theme for the full blown Photoshop as well if so they will have a lot of very unhappy people!

Thanks for the reply what I mean by Adult theme is this new one looks so similar to all the free programs my Granddaughter uses online! Large icons and bland looks.like Kolourpaint, Inkscape and the like.
I'm not sure what this Guided tab is for? if I open this I have nothing to choose apart from magnifying glass and a hand top left  next to that is Before and after choice top right is a Create tab with nothing in it, bottom left 1.1 fit screen, fill screen, print screen (tool options) below that is Photo bin, Tool options, undo, redo, rotate, Organize, that's it apart from fit two of the same image on the screen it look like a waste of space? or is this not included in the trial version??
I don't know what this "create tab is for? nothing in this on any of the three tabs Quick, Guided, Expert? or is this not in the trial version either??
Yes Im aware that colour is a personal preference, and so is style choice? this is why I think so many Elements users including myself will be of to pastures new?
As far as there were at least as many people who complained about the dark interface being too hard to see, not so hard to solve, add a choice of skin colours?

  • 13.1 Interface Changes

    Hi,
Im really enjoying the new look. Thanks to everyone on the AE team for this new release.
    I have a few questions.
    - My tool tips don't work for the motion blur/frame blending icon panel in the timeline. This is ok for me but has stumped some of our trainees.
    - The feature where you could hover the curser over a layer in the timeline and see a wire frame display of the bounding box for that layer in the project panel is missing for me. Is there a new preference for this?
    - I always have my preview panel set to loop but when i fire up AE it will always stop at the end of a comp unless I cycle through the looping options. This seems strange.
    Thanks for your time.
    Glenn

Allow me to heartily second Dave's complaint.  I really really really really HATE that Adobe has done away with the OPTION of having a dark on light interface.  And for literally no other reason than to unify the look of Adobe software across the line and look sophisticated (or something).  The shortsightedness is breathtaking.
What's so awful about giving users a choice?  If someone likes light on dark, slide that slider and there you go.  If someone likes dark on light, slide the slider the other way, and there you go.
But now, no choice.  You're going to use light on dark, and YOU'RE GOING TO LIKE IT.  "You'll get used to it."
IMO, Adobe's implementation of light on dark has sucked since that interface option was introduced way back in, I don't know, AE 7 or 8?  The white text is WAY too bright and contrasty.  I understand the rationale of having a dark interface that doesn't wash out your composition window, and I tried the dark interface time and again, but my eyes couldn't take it for very long.  I have no problem with Maxon's version of light on dark; I don't know why Adobe can't get it right.  Cinema 4D allows the user to customize the color of almost every interface element.  I wish Adobe had as much respect for its customers.  Jeebus help us if Adobe acquires Cinema 4D.
I've been using AE since around 1997 (version 3.1).  Time and time again I see useful features tossed aside (wireframe previews, vector paint, the old lens blur, interface flexibility, etc) that have negatively impacted my productivity.  That's not to say that some new features have improved my productivity, but why do those new features have to come at the expense of some of these older ones?
And yes, I will submit a feature request (to bring back the dark on light interface OPTION) as I've done time and time before, and I will expect the same non-result.

  • How can I save my interface preference in InDesign CC?

I'm working in InDesign CC and I prefer to have my interface set at "Light" instead of the new dark interface that is the default. I made sure no documents were open, went to Edit/Preferences/Interface and selected my choice. But whenever I start InDesign (say, each morning when I get to work), I has gone back to default dark interface. It saves my other preference changes and other changes to the workspace, but not the choice of interface. Everyone at my office prefers the light interface so we're wondering if there's a way to make InDesign save this preference. Thanks!

The other preferences I changed seem to have saved just fine. I don't change a ton of stuff...just the units and now the interface.

  • Dark bridge background = blurred window

After being driven absolutley batty, resetting apple plists, display settings, zapping PRAM and anything else I could think of, I finally figured it out: if I set my CS4 Bridge 3.0.0.464 "Image Backdrop" to anything darker than about 50% gray, my whole screen blurs. I don't just mean the Bridge window, I mean my menu bar, desktop, everything.
This also happens in CS4 Photoshop with any dark Interface background color, in any mode -- including full screen.
Needless to say, I'm curious if this is a general bug or something specific to my setup. But I do really want to fix it, because working against gray just won't cut it. I don't think I had this problem in 10.5.7 -- or at least not as often.
Running OS X 10.5.8 on a 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro, mirrored to a Sony CRT Trinitron Multiscan 400PS.
    Any help, much appreciated!

For the record, and anyone else who has this happen, the Apple help forums pointed me in the right direction: a loose monitor cable. It seems crazy, but there you have it.

  • How to change Interface appearance?

I'm new to InDesign CS6 and am having trouble changing the appearance of the interface.  I watched a tutorial and under my Preferences/Interface tab I don't have an "appearance" section. It's default is the lightest setting, can anyone help me to change it darker?  (and shift + F1 doesn't work for me either, even tho' I think that's for Photoshop)

The dark interface was introduced in InDesign CC. It is not an option in CS6.

  • Missing darker UI in CS6

similarly to the illustrator... my eye got used to the dark interface already

Another proof that Adobe doesn't care about Fireworks.

  • The workspace interface on 8

I have 6, and have a very hard time reading/using the dark interface.  I heard that 7 can be changed to a lighter one.  Do you know if this is available on the new 8?
    Thanks,
    Ellen

Version 7 has a slider to adjust from dark to lighter allowing you to select your own setting. However in Version 8 they went backwards to an extent by providing only two setting Light or Dark to choose from.

  • Apple script to enable/disable dark menu bar and dock when sunsets/sunrises

    Greetings,
Regarding the new dark menu bar and dock function in Yosemite. Would it be possible to write a script that would enable this function at a certain time say sunset and to disable it at another time say sunrise?
If so, is there anybody who could possibly help me write such a script or atlas point me in the right direction please?
    Many thanks in advance
    G_D

Although you can set or remove the Dark interface style with defaults write syntax, the reset back to default (non-dark) interface will require a log-out/log-in cycle to entirely remove the Dark style. Toggling this style on and off in the System Preferences > General panel does not require the preceding log-out disruption. Unfortunately, other than possible GUI scripting, the Apple Script dictionary in Yosemite is very limited with respect to System Preferences access, and enabling/disabling the dark interface style.

  • Am I the only one that doesn't like the interface of LR4?

I had really hoped that enough people complained about the interface design. Specifically the small dark fonts on a dark grey background. I find it nearly unusable. I just downloaded the trial of LR4 with hopes that they had addressed this issue. I guess they didn't get enough negative feedback. I really hate it. It seems that it wouldn't take that much in the way of coding to give us an option to change the font color.
This was one of the reasons I didn't upgrade to v3. I must say I'm really disappointed.

I happen to have a very large and calibrated top-of-the-line NEC display so that is not the issue — although it's brightness is set for accurate Color Proofing for Print.
I simply find the LR GUI a dark, cluttered and depressing environment in which to work (and an eye-straining one too!) and much prefer to work in the broad sunny uplands of Photoshop and Bridge-hosted ACR. (And that combination works extremely efficiently even for this photographer who may return from a Shoot with anywhere between four and eight thousand photographs!)
The ability to choose a lighter interface is essential in my case.
Panels which retracted into docks on the edges of the monitor would get rid of the clutter and provide a bigger working space and then the "develop" panels could open more widely when in use to allow for wider sliders.
Another thing about dark interfaces is that while they may be satisfactory for those who only prepare work for on-screen viewing, they are thoroughly unsuitable for those who prepare work for the Press or Printing in general.
Yet again, I have given another new version of LR (LR4) a fair testing and regret that, for the reasons stated here,  I still do not find it to be a program that I will be buying.
