Database connections in Planning

Hi,
We are experiencing issues suddenly in our production environment and we are not able to run FR reports as a result. When we run the reports we get the following error:
*8001: The Database Connection could not be found: CHRDistr:CHRDistr:Essbase:10.10.2.95:CHRDistr:CHRDistr:Essbase*
So, i went to the database connection manager and i found all my connections are not listed. We tried to create a new connection and we get the following error after giving all the necessary parameters
*8001: The Database Connection could not be found: 57f64623_1221c9769c4_-7fa8*
This is a new database connection i am trying to create and it says connection could not be found. If anyone of you had seen this issue before let me know how you were able to fix it.
I am able to login and access workspace, AAS, Essbae, Planning, Reports. But, we are not able to run reports.
Here are the details of our setup
OS - Windows Server 2003
Hyperion Version - 9.3.1
Repository - SQL Server Enterprise 2005
Thanks
Sri

We have a similar issue after doing Essbase upgrade to 9.3.1.3, when running reports now we get 8001: Database Connection could not be found.
Did you find a solution to your problem?

    Datasource for the application.
I have created a sql db for this planning application (my datasource). See my first message for more details.
When you create a new planning application, you need to associate it with a data source. Since this is a new install, I don't have any data sources available yet.
So, "To create, edit or delete data sources, click Manage Data Source."
This page lets you validate your connection to the database and essbase server. My essbase server connection validates! The database connection does not validate after I enter all the relevant information.

    Hello,
While creating the database in Desktop Planning, I have the following error message:
"Application is not registered in HUB. Can not synchronize users with Essbase in CAS mode."
However, the database is created in Essbase. But when I try to connect to Planning web, it says:
    "An error occurred."
I'm using SQL server 2005 as relationnal database.
    Current OS: Windows Server 2003
When do I actually launch the configuration utility for regenerating the Planning properties file ? Once, the database is created via Desktop Planning.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello John,
I don't have the error message with Planning Desktop, "Security filters" should not have been ticked. But now, I still have the problem with Planning Web => Blank page although the service is running.

  • Export to PDF from populated c# Dataset without Database connection

I have Crystal Reports Developer Full version 11.5.12.1838, all versions of Visual Studio and about 100+ reports targeting printed paper.
They were developed over the last decade with the Developer Designer (and it's predecessors) and are based on SQL Server Stored Procedures. In the past, they were produced at runtime using a MS Access VBA application that either printed them or exported them to PDF files. I have successfully converted that application to C#, however a few problems: despite loading a populated dataset and setting all parameters, the runtime still wants to refresh the dataset. That works for 95% of all reports, but some just use null values for the parameters (despite having set them correctly), others mix the sequence of the parameters (despite querying them correctly) and some don't use the provided credentials. But that is not the main problem.
Now I need a way to produce (export to PDF) these reports at runtime based on a populated C# Dataset without database connectivity for the Crystal environment. The structure of the data in the Dataset is identical to what the stored procedure return in the development environment.
The question is: is that possible and what do I need in terms of version, SDK etc. Any advice (sample links) would be much appreciated.

    Hi Ludek;
Thanks for the hints. After many many hours of research and trial and error here are my findings:
Assigning a dataset to CR does NOT work - seems CR is just ignoring it completely. What does (partially) work is assigning a DataTable, however, if you try to do that with a main report and more than ONE sub-report, it fails with likely unrelated error messages (not yet implemented).
I took one of my reports and deleted all sub-reports. Assigned a DataTable at runtime - works fine. Added one sub-report that has a single field (picture) and loaded at runtime with a DataTable. No problem.
Removed that subreport and added another subreport that has a single text field. All good.
Now: having both sub-reports and having both subreports loaded from a DataTable fails. It works if one of the datasets is empty. It also works with 2 sub-reports returning text into their single field.
The DataTables are populated from the exact same stored procedures (and data source) that are embedded in the report from the design (CR XI) - essentially this should be a swap from internal to external fetch with no consequences.
I tried assigning using subDocument.SetDataSource and subDocument.Databas.Tables[0].SetDataSource  - no difference.
The background of this: all my reports work just fine using VBA (Access), but that app will be retired and replaced by something C# based. In the meantime, the same report file has to work with both engines.
If I cannot get the DataTable assignment for sub-reports to work, there is a plan-b type possibility: replacing the stored procedure for some sub-reports at runtime - which works using SubReport.Database.Tables[0].Location.= "newSPName" as long as the new sp has no parameters like the old one.
The problem is that the new procedure has 2 parameters and I did not find a way to add them to the parameters collection (not allowed in sub-reports)
Anything that comes to your mind ?
Any help will be much appreciated
    Thanks
    Rolf

I've seen this issue several times.
Run FR independently and see if you are still able to connect.
First make sure essbase is running. Try sample connection using maxl.
    Check if ports are open.

  • Error connecting to planning server from EAS

We implemented Hyperion Planning about 1 month ago. We are having this intermittent issue with connecting to Planning servers. When the users attempt to add a Business Rule, they select an outline, and browse to the planning servers. When they click one of the two servers they get the message "Error connecting to Planning server <<Server A>>". The message only happens on Server A.
I check the planning service, it is running. I login directly to the planning application (http://<<Server A>>:8300/HyperionPlanning/) , it works fine. However I still get the error. The problem comes and goes, but once is happens the only solution seems to be restart all of the services on the Planning server.
    Is anyone experiencing this issue?
If so is there a resolution? Is this a common thing with Hyperion Planning?
I opened a TAR, but because the issue is only happening occasionally (1 day in 5) I thought I would try the forums. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi,
What version of planning are you running, there was patch 9.3.1.1.1 that addressed
6636367 (8-665086601) When the Business Rules connection to the relational database is lost, Business Rules does not reconnect to it. To solve this problem, an optional property, HBR_CONNECTION_VALIDATE_TIME, was added to HBRServer.properties. This property specifies a time interval for checking the connection between Business Rules and the relational database. If the connection is not valid, a new connection is established. The time interval is specified in milliseconds and defaults to 300,000 (five minutes).
This maybe the same sort of issue you are experiencing.
    Cheers

I recommend logging into My Oracle Support and having a read of doc id - 763345.1
It goes through different options for resolving business rules issues.
Though you will need to be able to log into your planning applications first, make sure all your connection information is correc e.g. the connection details to the relational databases.
    Cheers

  • Problem installing Database connectivity toolkit

My company manufactures in multiple plants around the world.  I have a problem in China and need to debug, and since the code is distributed in exe form, that is a problem.  My approach was to install a 30 day trial license of LV2010 SP1, planning on removing it when the debug is done.  To this point, all is fine.  The problem is that the app requires the Database Connectivity Toolkit.  I downloaded a copy and tried to install.  It says it can't install because LV2010 is not installed.  Is this because of the eval license?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Very likely, but the far better solution is to not burden yourself with the DCT. It is a major complication to a process that is essentially very simple. As an alternative check this thread.

  • Database Connection Manager

    Hi all,
We are implementing Hyperion planning version 11.1.2.1.0.83(latest I believe) and I am trying to establish a connection between financial reporting to one of the planning db's. In the past even in 11.1.2.1 you would go to Tools > Database connection and go from there. I dont even see that option on this version. I have looked online and in admin guides and they all point to the same as in above. Has this function changed or moved?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

You need to open the Explore tab first before you can see this option.
    Otherwise check your permissions ;-)

  • Database connectivity to business objects

    Hi All,
I am new to for my first project, having good knowledge about BO but my only concern is with the first day target.
As a new team mate memeber what are my roles and responsibilites to be done.
How to interact with the Administrator to get my database connectivity and then how to implement the path provided by the admin people to get my database activate and then to connect it to the business objects.
So again i am requesting you all if you any one among you, who has already gone through this situation  could help and make to understand how to connect the database to business objects.
And how to present ourslef in a new environment.
    Thanks,

    Anu,
This is one of those forum threads that could last all year with comments, tips, and criticisms.  If you have a lot of knowledge about BusObjects, then you are nearly half way there.  In my experience, the biggest road block to success is communication and team cohesiveness.  If everyone on the project are not communicating with each other then everything is going to fail.  What do I mean about communication?  It's hard to pin down, but when I see it I'll know it's there (smile).  For starters it's having a good plan that everyone can work from.  An underlying theme in communications is also trust.  The folks who hand out the userids and passwords must be able to trust the folks who are receiving the privileges.  If the administrator must give you read/write access to his or her database and they don't "know" you, then this is an uphill battle.  Many administrators do not understand middleware such as BusObjects, they are more familiar with things like Access, and such -- the more simpler applications.  When you try throwing terms around like business intelligence, single-sign on, multiple queries, data providers, meta data, report viewer, etc, etc their heads start to spin and they want you OUT of their sight.  All of these concepts must be introduced gently and in an appropriate setting.  The admins must get familiar and comfortable with your tools before you can make headway.  So that is what I mean by communication, in this case laterally.  You must also communicate upwards (the C-level folks), and downward, the users.  Like I said, folks could add to this thread infinitum, and I would invite other as such, but here are some things to think about as you move forward.  The best teacher is experience, but who has time for that?

Possible causes may be that you do not have access to at least one member of a required dimension, or the member selection resulted in no members present. Contact your administrator. It seems that report is trying to open with POV Scenario set to Scenario (top member) and our user does not have privilege for Scenario member only for its children.
I know i can switch the user POV in preferences to display before report and set up dimensions and it will be stored, but isn't it quite tricky?

You answered your first question. Essbase connection cannot use some FR functions like annotations.
by using annotation function you can show cell notes, planning unit annotation, supporting details
Yes it is little different than a regular Essbase report. You can use ManagePOV.cmd and set User POVs or
Instead of using POV move (scenario in your case) dimension to column and use prompts.

  • Script to check database connection on 9.3.1

    Hello,
I hope I can describe this clearly. We are running Hyperion 9.3.1. The database and essbase are on one server, and the applications are on another server.
We do a nightly database and essbase backup, and in some environments, we lose the database connection, as evidenced by signing onto EAS, and trying to access the Business Rules icon, and getting a message that the connection failed. We currently resolve this by scheduling a restart of the services, but I have been asked instead if I can write a script that queries the database, and if it is not up, to send an email.
I am not an experienced script writer, and would appreciate as much help as I can get towards this objective. Thank you for reading this.

Take a look at this thread: Re: Planning server not showing up while attaching BR in Essbase
I just did a quick test on my 11.1.1.3 VM and ran this query:
    SELECT COUNT(*) FROM HBRPluginData
If you didn't get at least a 1 as a response, you'd know it wasn't working.
It wouldn't be all that hard to script it. An easy test is the next time EAS is down to go try the above query and prove that you get a 0 or an error and compare it to EAS in a running state.
