Dell Power Edge 6400 CDROM Problem

When installing Solaris 8 for intel in a Dell Power Edge 6400 with two processors, everything looks fine at the begginning before booting, I mean the Cd rom drive is detected as booteable, but when the system start to install, it asks from where to extract the operating system and in the list does not appear the CD Rom, it just displays the networks cards.
Please I have more than a week with this problem, I already check the HCL, I already changed the HD, the CdRom (twice), but it continues without detecting the cdrom after booting.
The Cdrom is in the scsi 5.
Any body in UK, USA, Mexico or wherever please HELP.
Carlos Herrera

If I remember right the Dell Power Edge had an adaptec 160 controller which
you have to download and install the scsi drivers from the Adaptec website.
Check and verify which scsi controller you have on your Dell.

  • Which free linux can I use on a Dell Power Edge Server 2650

    Dear all,
I have recently joined the subscription program and want to install Netweaver. From my old company I could purchase a couple of Dell Power Edge Servers 2650 with 6GB RAM, Dual Core etc - so plenty of hardware. As next step I want to install a linux OS to be able to to install SAP trial version and/or the Netweaver software from the subscription program.
In the compatibility section I have read that I need either SUSE or RedHat linux enterprise edition. But these enterprise editions cost money when purchasing it. Is there also a free linux edition that I could use? If not, which enterprise linux would be the cheapest that I could use?
    Thanks and best regards
    Daniel Blaschkowski

    Hi Daniel,
you can download a copy of the installation DVD of SUSE Enterprise Server 10SP2 for free from the Novell's Web Site. You won't have support nor will you be able to get software updates but it will allow you to get a first feeling about Netweaver on Linux.
Another option is to use [Centos |www.centos.org] that is a clone of Redhat Enterprise Server. You will have to cheat a little bit to be able to install SAP on it (you have to make your Centos appear like it is a true Redhat) but it works without a hitch.
Of course, do not run any production instances on such setups as you will get into trouble with SAP support in case you open up a problem message related to these platforms
    Have fun,
    Seb

  • Solaris 8 on Dell Power Edge 4400

What does it take to get Solaris 8 installed on a Dell Power Edge 4400?
Thus far, I have followed instructions found elsewhere to grab the Adaptec
cadp160 driver, which I successfully install in the Device Configuration Assistant. Every time I select the CD as my boot device, the system wedges while trying to load adp.bef, with a "short read" error. Eventually, the system fails out to the boot interpreter.
This system has 2x1Ghz P4's on it, onboard AIC-7899 (where a Quantum Atlas V lives) and AIC-7880 SCSI controllers, plus a PCI AHA 2940 controller (on which the CD lives).
This is very frustrating--I couldn't install Solaris 8 on my Dell Dimension 4100 either (ACPI tables not in reclaim memory bug).
I am using the Solaris 8 01/01 boot images, FYI.
Has anyone out there successfully gotten Solaris 8 to install and boot on one of these beasts?
    Thanks,
    Chris

After thrashing for 2 weeks with the onboard 7880 SCSI and onboard 7890 RAID controllers, I was finally able to load up Solaris 8 on a Poweredge 2400. (4/01 build)
The only way I was able to do it was configure the server as below:
7880 SCSI: CD-ROM drive only device on this controller, set to ID 5.
7890 RAID controller: Disabled. Dont' believe Dell or Adaptec, this card will not work with Solaris 7 or 8. Even with the RAID chip removed and running as standard SCSI controller, it still would not work.
Adaptec 2940 U2W: 9G Quantum Atlas V drive with HP SureStore DAT 24i drive.
PERC II RAID controller yanked out of older 4100 system, 3 drives running RAID 5.
Important note: Do not attach anything to the 7880 controller besides the CD. The system will not boot if attempting to boot to the HD or if you attempt to boot from CD, it will hang at the adp.bef file.
    Hope this helps..

  • My solution (or so I thought) to Power Manager/CPU throttling problems!!!

I have found a solution to all my Power Manager/CPU throttling problems!!! Though there is some good and bad news.
    {EDIT: The problem has NOT been fixed, even after latest PowerManager (3.62) and BIOS (1.30) versions. Pretty much ignore anything I say below as the problem is still occurring. You can see my full post here: http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W520-Speedstep-not-working-properly-on-battery-...}
Good news:  I have NONE of the throttling issues or inconsistent CPU frequency problems I was having before on AC or battery power.  Everything, including TurboBoost on battery works! It is completely fixed! (I have no idea how this factors into Lenovo’s statements that TurboBoost is disabled on battery “by design”. There is at least one other post from someone else that also reported TurboBoost was working for them on battery)
Bad news: I don’t really know which one of the many things I tried actually worked. I am sorry I wasn’t more methodical about recording what I did and checking results, but this was my last ditch effort to get this fixed on my own without sending the system in for repair and frankly, I didn’t think it would work. Now that it has worked, I’m hoping my steps can help others.
For anyone interested, here’s what I did… and before anyone says something like “That has nothing to do with managing power/cpu, why would that help?!… etc., please keep in mind I’m just stating exactly what I did. I am aware some of the steps may not be relevant, but who knows… We all know how weird PC’s are sometimes, even the smallest, oddest thing may resolve a problem. So anyway, here goes.
**IMPORTANT** Not sure how many noticed, but there was a new version of Power Manager released a few weeks ago, 3.62. The PM driver seems to have stayed the same. That alone could very well be the sole fix, I’m not sure. You may just want to completely remove PM and PM driver and install the latest version before trying any of the steps below.
1)Made a complete system image via Windows built-in backup feature
2)Disable any 3rd party fan/CPU control utilities (Throttlestop, etc). Make sure they are also not going to run at startup or from a   scheduled task
3)Remove Power Manager Driver, then remove Power Manager software
    4)Reboot to Windows
5)Remove all traces of the Power Manager drivers/software directories (think it was something like C:\readyapps and C:\drivers.) **For some odd reason after I did this, my wireless stopped working but it resolved itself by the time I was done with these steps, strange
    6)Reboot
7)Access BIOS and reset all settings to default
8)Boot into Windows, downgrade to BIOS 1.25 [UEFI: 1.25 - 8BET44WW / ECP: 1.14 8AHT32WW ]  via the Windows flash utility. I wanted to downgrade all the way back to 1.06, but the software would throw up some error for any version prior to 1.25 and wouldn’t proceed
9)Reboot to Windows; make sure system booted w/ out issues
10)Reboot again, access BIOS, reset to defaults again
    11)Shut down system
12)Disconnect AC power. Remove main battery. Access and disconnect system backup (a.k.a CMOS) battery under keyboard. Discharge residual power in the system (there are various ways to do this, but you could just leave the battery disconnected for a few minutes).  Visually inspect the system for anything funky…my system had a slightly but noticeably loose CPU/GPU heat sink/fan assembly power connector.
    13)Reconnect backup battery.
14)Reconnect AC power but leave main battery disconnected.
15)Power on. Should get a message indicating “checksum error, system time reset” or something like that.
16)Reboot to Windows. Verified still okay.
17)Downloaded latest BIOS version, 1.26. This time I burned the bootable BIOS flash CD instead of running it through Windows.
18)Restart and boot from disc, flash BIOS to 1.26. Once complete, restart. Verify BIOS set to defaults.
    19)Boot back into Windows.
20)Install latest Power Manager driver (1.62 ), reboot if/as prompted. Install Power Manager (3.62), reboot as prompted.
21)Boot into Windows, verified Power Manager was active and working. Verified TurboBoost was working. Restarted system a few times and played around with Power Manager for a bit to see if the different power plans worked and retained the settings, all the while monitoring the Intel TurboBoost utility and PM’s own “power gauges”. Let system Sleep, changed power sources, resumed, etc. Everything was working great.
22)Shutdown, reconnect main battery. Booted into Windows. Again, fiddled with Power Manager for a bit, switching between power plans and AC/battery power. Still worked great.
    23)Success!
That’s it.  Again, this is not a guaranteed fix guide. These are just simply the steps that I took on my system that resolved the problems many of us are having. Hopefully it will work for others.

All I basically did was download and install...
    (Chipset driver) http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/oss924ww.exe
    (PM driver)  http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/83ku14ww.exe
Now, I did chipset first (didnt ask to reboot) then installed the PM driver (did ask to reboot)
I rebooted.... then I went into bios (1.26) and set everything to default... then restarted saving changes...
Since I prefer not using optimus I changed the display settings in bios right after saving the default settings...
Not sure whether or not you really had to go into bios... but everything seems to be working...
My settings in PM is set to Maximum Power in the Advanced tab,  3rd party monitoring tools is TPFanControl and HWInfo64....

  • What's causing these power-up and login problems?

I recently switched from Tiger to Leopard (installed by the repairers) and have encountered some power-up and login problems. Basically, my set up is that the computer automatically logs into a non-admin account, launches a Safari page, and then that's it - after checking the webpage, I logout of that account, into my main account, and work from there.
    In Tiger :
A few times quite recently the computer would freeze, either while Safari was launching / opening the webpage, or when I tried to logout. Force Quit didn't work (total freeze) so I would force power-off and switch on again, and things would be fine.
In Leopard, one of the following has begun to happen, about two weeks after I began using it:
    • The computer reaches the grey screen with an endlessly rotating gear wheel. (Power off / on again)
    • The computer logs in to the account; after selecting 'Log out...' I log out, but instead of giving me the login screen, it logs straight back into that account, and this happens every time I try 'Log out...'. (Use Fast User Switching instead to reach main account, where one or two software glitches prompt a Restart) This has happened twice.
    • This morning, the computer reached the blue screen where the pointer appeared - faded - appeared - faded etc endlessly (Power off / on again).
Clearly it is not the System - experiencing problems in both Tiger and Leopard proves that. Nor is it my HD - I've had a new one installed. It must therefore be a setting in my login account, though it's hard to see what : I only use that account for login, and a single launch of Safari, and it's been ok for years.
Should i create another login account and see if that solves the problem? By the way, the repairers did not give me any Leopard install disks, so please don't suggest that method of diagnosis. I only have the original Tiger disks.

    2. I don't know what Apple app(s) you refer to? As I said I've upgraded all the free ones, and iLife '06 is working (and I have the disks).
Look in your Applications folder: Any Apple app there, except for the ones you've mentioned. And all the built-in parts of OSX.
    3. They told me that I CAN do a full restore from a Time Machine backup (via Disk Utility apparently).
That should tell you something about the quality of their advice.
See: [Mac OS X 10.6 Help Recovering your entire system|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15638.html].
Or the *Restoring your entire system from a backup* section, towards the bottom of [Mac 101: Time Machine|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427].
Or look up +*Time Machine+* in Mac Help.
Or #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
And if there's a problem with your installation of OSX (which seems likely), or the Apple apps, you can't reinstall them, either.
    4. Having spent hours and hours getting the machine to work properly (upgrading Mail and sorting out Mail problems, upgrading Safari, re-upgrading iTunes and sorting out problems), I'm not prepared to spend hours and hours doing the whole thing in reverse to restore Tiger, including learning HOW to do that.
Correct; unless you have backups of the Tiger system, that's impractical at best.
So unless anyone has a reasonably simple, straightforward answer as to what this problem might be, it looks like I must live with it.
You have some sort of problem with your Mac and it's not going to get better on it's own. Most likely, it will get worse.
If you haven't, try the things recommended by Dale.
Also try running the +Apple Hardware Test.+ It's on one of the disc(s) that came with your Mac, and is tailored to it's particular hardware. The disk should have +Apple Hardware Test+ and instructions for running it printed in very tiny type.
I sympathize with your situation, but the repair shop violated the Apple license, and put you in an untenable situation. If they won't correct it by supplying the Leopard disc, you really should report them to Apple.
You need to purchase a retail copy of Leopard (not the gray discs that came with another Mac; they won't boot yours). They're not shown on the Apple Store website anymore, and eBay and other sellers get a premium for them, but AppleCare should have them for the original $129.

I have a DVD project that takes about 14 hours to generate. Is there any way to periodically save it during encoding so power failures or other problems do not require a complete restart?

No.  Are you saving the project as a disk image rather than burning directly to disk from iDVD?  If not then that's what I suggest you do.  That will separate the encoding process from the burn process to save time and disks if the encoding is bad.  It also lets you burn a second or third disk without having to encode again.

Can you list out your IDE devices such as :

    IDE 2 slave : ...
    (RAID) IDE 3 , IDE 4... etc

  • Edge e530 cdrom screw removal

    Hello,
I was trying to place a 2nd hdd to my thinkpad edge e530 so I had to first remove the cdrom drive.
However, I couldn't remove the screw that holds the cdrom which according to the manual is this type:
    M2 × 3 mm, wafer-head, nylon-coated [1]  (http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd023403)
I tried with the smallest screwdrivers I had, but it wouldn't turn at all and seems to have some tear on it now.
What kind of screwdriver do I need for this?
    Thanks for your help!

Just a small bump, I have the same problem with my Lenovo S440. I plugged in an m.2 SSD, closed it up. The SSD didn't seem to be connected correctly, so I tried to open it up again and 1 screw just totally warped. I did use the correct screwdriver, it's actually exactly the same one as the Lenovo engineer who repaired my laptop yesterday used. I can probably drill it out without doing any damage, but if anyone has a better solution I'd like to hear it. I'm also looking for some replacement screws (the size/type isn't mentioned in the replacement manual, but I' ve already opened at seperate topic for that).
I know this post is quite old, but did you by any chance find a way to take it out?

    Hello,
I have problem with my card. In some games at total random time my screen freeze and I get some little white "bolts" all over my screen, display driver stop working and i must do ctrl+alt+del to exit that process or sometimes i cannot do anything and i must restart PC on button. Look at picture which are posted and u will see whats happen. I have installed latest drivers, but i still have that problem.
I never clocked graphic card, its on default settings.
I bought this card 27.12.2011 and have this problem from the start.
    My config is:
    CPU AMD Phenom 2 X4 965
    Motherboard M4A87TD
NGTX570 Twin Frozr iii Power Edition/OC
    Kingston DDR3 12GB
    Chieftec 650W
    Regards,
    Veljko

I didn't pay attention because it doesn't often happen. I still have guarantee - for 2 years, but the problem is that if i send my card back they will check the card and the problem may not happen and they will send me my card back. I have mentioned before that the problem occurs at random time.
One thing more, when I test the card in hard tests like Furmark and Kombustor that problem never happens. It occurs in video games which are not very demanding. I would ask you if it is usual that the temperature is always over 70 degrees in every game (even over 80 when playing new demanding games). I ask you that because i have read on various forums that the temperature doesn't increases that much.

  • Power Mac G4 sleep problem

    Hello!
My G4 (mdd) won't go to sleep anymore. Neither on its own via energy saver nor when you press the power button or select sleep in the apple menu. Does anyone know what to do?
I already unplugged my USB devices, didn't help. Then I trashed my energy saver and bluetooth preferences and reset PRAM by pressing <commandoption+PR> at startup, no luck. I read all the previous posts about this issue and did everything they said, but it didn't help.
maybe someone has an additional suggestion.
    Thank you!
    David
Power Mac G4 (mdd) 867 dual   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
In some cases, running MacOS X's cron tasks-maintenance that the OS performs automatically if you leave your Mac on 24 hours a day-can resolve many sleep problems. If you don't want to leave your Mac on, you can use MacJanitor, Yasu, or OnyX free at Versiontracker.com.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.3.9 combo update. Others here would use the one for their version.
    Cheers!
    DALE
