DNS simply died...

... and I don't understand why. Server Administration is not my specialty, but I managed to get it up and running.
Since DNS died, web and e-mail went with it. Because we couldn't be without e-mail communication, we moved hosting to an outside service. Today, when we click Start Service, it immediately turns itself off.
The log is below. Can anyone help?

Post your /etc/named.conf file and /var/named/formatdesigncom.com.zone and maybe we can help.
Or look for errors in your /var/named/formatdesigncom.com.zone :
"dnsrdatafromtext: formatdesigncom.com.zone:2: near 'NS': not a valid number"

  • My 6-week-old iPod simply died. No response even to power source. What gives?

I was playing my ipod 7G on a Bluetooth speaker. I paused play to take a phone call. Came back, and the ipod, which had been nearly fully charged, had ceased functioning. Black screen, not responsive to any buttons or to plugging into power source. Dead in the water. Is this a known problem with 7G?

Yes, it happens to some units. Have you tried the reset?

  • Internal domain no longer recognized after 10.4.9 update

I'm using OS X server to host Mac, Winblows and Web servers.
We HAD an internal domain, "Merc-Server", providing access to these services that we could access before I updated and rebooted the server to 10.4.9.
The server is on our local net at 113.128.162.82
After the reboot, it moved to 113.128.162.87
So on another mac, and on Windows, you could type in the following and connect to the server:
    http://merc-sever/
    afp://Merc-Server/
    afp://merc-server/
    On windows in search, mercury-server
Now, none of these can be found.
    What happened?
Any clue as what I need to do to turn these resources back on?
    Argh!
    Thanks,
    - Zav

I noted a similar problem (except for the ip change) as well and it threw me for a loop for a while this weekend, but I think I discovered the problem. looking into the named.log in /library/logs, I found items like the following:
    17-Mar-2007 16:19:20.173 mydomain.com.zone:25: gc._msdcs.mydomain.com: bad owner name (check-names)
googling a bit I found this link:
    http://readlist.com/lists/isc.org/bind9-users/0/621.html
where it is discussed that bind 9.3.x is more restrictive on names. Sure enough, the log line above referenced one of my A entries. This somehow seemed to lead to my domain no longer being locally resolvable as dns simply died. As soon as I edited the offending name, removing the underscore, and everything seems back to normal. Oddly, this had never been a problem. Additionally, this canonical entry had never caused a problem. It was one of several I hand edited into my zone file to make my Windows XP systems happy about single sign-on authentication to both our xServe acting as PDC and our Windows Server 2003 which I didn't want to run directory services on. The SRV records didn't seem to give any problems and so far the XP boxes don't seem to care. I wonder what change there might have been.

  • Satellite Pro P300 has just died on me

    Hi,
Yesterday my Satellite Pro P300 (PSPC1E) simply died on me...no battery charging lights nothing. Nothing happens when I press the ON button it is DEAD.
The battery was ok last time used, the adapter is still giving me nearly 20volts.
I took the laptop apart to check the DC in connector, thats ok.
I assume after some research its a motherboard fault. Typically my warranty ran out 2 months ago!!
Cost of a new replacement motherboard so far quoted is 180, not too eager to spend that as I have a tax bill to pay at the end of this month!
Any ideas to what the problem could be?
I have found a mobo on eBay which is a p300-1a8 going for a song but would that be compatible?
What are all the variations in the motherboards?
Would any other motherboard be compatible?
Any ideas, suggestions would be much appreciated and I thank anyone in advance for any ideas.
    Cheers
    Steve

    Yes and no.
You can also imagine that different P300 notebooks have also different ports. Some of them have HDMI some probably not. There is also the difference.
Different ports, different processor or different graphic card. Maybe some models don't have even webcam and missing controller on motherboard.
So, if you want to have identical hardware configuration please be sure you use motherboard with the same model number.

  • DNS Zone forward OS X10.5 Server

I have DNS functioning for the internal network with recursion, users can query both internally and externally just fine. I do not service DNS publicly to the Internet.
I need to setup one zone so that queries for 'map.local' are forwarded to another DNS server I have access to. I prefer a forward instead of becoming a slave to that master domain if possible.
I do not see any option to this within the GUI.
Researching this I feel I found how to do this in BIND using /etc/named.conf:
    zone "map.local" IN {
    type forward;
    forwarders { 10.64.0.100; };
However when I add this DNS simply stops working, the logs in debug mode show nothing. As soon as I remove it DNS starts up.
It appears all the zone setting are pulled out /etc/named.conf in 10.5 and placed in an include file--however that file's header say do no edit, its written by the GUI. As a test I tried to enter this in that anyway and the same thing happened DNS stopped working.
How do I setup DNS on OS X 10.5 Server to forward DNS for this one domain 'map.local' to query another DNS server by IP?
I have read OS X doesn't deal well with '.local' type TLDs, but it can if the domain is added to its search domains. I do not have control over that domain name and must deal with it as '.local'. Any comments on how much trouble this will cause?
    Thanks,
    Joe

    According to this: http://docstore.mik.ua/orelly/networking2ndEd/dns/ch1005.htm
    you should enter:
    zone "map.local" {
    type forward;
    forwarders { 10.64.0.100; };
    Remove the "IN".
And "map.local" might work but just ".local" would probably interfere with mDNS/Bonjour.
I have no idéa if this works but it should.

  • DNS to a MAMP server

Hi guys, this is a OS X / Networking question.
I have 2 websites up and running on my OSX 10.5 server and I have DNS successfully routing to each site (all internal).
My colleague installed a MAMP server and hosted some project software on it. Now I'm a little mixed up on how to point a DNS entry at the separate MAMP server since it's not a part of the Web Site role on the server. Do you think this can be done just on the router?
The addresses of the websites are (these are mock-ups of course. not the actual info)
    Site1 - http://www.mysite.com ---> 10.0.0.5(port 80) (Physical ethernet address)
    Site2 - http://colaboration.mysite.com ---> 10.0.0.6 (port 80) (virtual Ethernet address)
The MAMP server is currently running at 10.0.0.5:8844
Is it just going to be too difficult to point to 2 different sites even though they run on different ports?
Sorry if this sounds scattered. I haven't done DNS on the apple server in months.
    THANKS!

There is zero correlation between DNS and ports, or even services. DNS simply maps names to IP addresses (and back).
So, to that end, it doesn't matter whether you have two names pointing to two different IP addresses on the same machine (heck, they could point to the same IP address if that's what you want).
The only thing you cannot do is use DNS to point a hostname to something like '10.0.0.5:8844' since you cannot incorporate a port number in the lookup. You can point it to 10.0.0.5 and the user will need to append the port number in their browser/client.
    Does that answer the question.

  • DNS just... QUIT

Up until this morning, DNS worked fine. Somehow, DNS simply stopped working. After checking the server, and it showing that DNS is off, I proceed to start DNS again. It attempts to start, but then fails and remains off.
I didn't make any changes, so I don't understand what's going on. Also, I fail to understand why "bloomingdaleshome.com" is appearing on March 24th. All too strange.
In any case, here the log with the hope that someone out there can provide insight and a fix.
    Thanks! John

  • Iphone simply switched off mid-use

I was actually using safari to browse the Apple Store - was in the market for an ipad!  I am now in a complete stress though, because while I was browsing (at about 15% battery) the phone simply switched off (as if the battery had died).  I went to plug it in and while I pottered about, I left it charging in the wall.  After about 10 minutes, the phone still hadn't switched on which I thought odd. There was no charging screen either so it was like the phone had simply died.  I used my boyfriend's iphone to look up some ways of getting the **** thing working again... tried holding the home/off button simultaneously for 10 secs, 20 secs and 30 secs.  Nothing.  Tried plugging it into itunes - nothing, the screen stayed black.  Tried plugging the USB into the laptop, holding the home button and then connecting the USB into the phone....nothing! I am getting really frustrated!!  I am sure I got the phone under a year ago so I cannot think what has happened... its so strange.  Any suggestions?  Has this happened to anyone else?  My provider is o2 - for half a minute I thought it was something to do with them again.  PLease let it be their fault!!  Any suggestions would be fantastic!

If you've followed all the of the following troubleshooting steps, it may be necessary for you to contact Apple Support for your region.

  • E7 died during initial setup

    Hello!
I've just got an E7 and started to set it up. When the option to transfer the address book from another Nokia phone was chosen, the phone simply died. It doesn't turn on anymore, the light does not appear when the charging cable in plugged in, and, well, it's overall not responsive.
It's quite a frustrating experience to not be able to use the new phone. Please help me with this!

    Hi Serpentia,
    Welcome to the Nokia Forums!
Have you tried plugging it into your PC to see if it is detected?
I suggest you return it to the retailer to receive a replacement device as soon as possible.

  • Dead or dying Airport Express?

OK, long story short: I've got 2 Macs, an Airport Extreme Base and an Airport Express. Everything worked perfectly until the Internet connection from the Express grew more and more erratic. I isolated the Express as the problem, updated the firmware, reset it, restarted it, soft reset, hard reset, power cycled, changed outlets, tried every trick in the book, blah blah blah. It glows green, sees the network fine but Internet speeds range from good to non-existent, intermittently. Both computers run great off the Extreme Base Station.
So: Is it possible my Express is simply dying? Or is there something else I haven't tried?

This is the same problem I am having, in fact... It has gotten to the point where it no longer loads anything at all. Resetting seems to bring it to life for about 30 seconds, and then it promptly craps out again. I've tried all the different firmware versions, hard and soft resets, power cycling etc. and nothing is working. Any ideas?

  • Ive had my ipod for 13 months and the battery died!

is there no way i can get this fixed for free?!?
i just want my ipod back, and they plan to have these batterys to die after 12 months so why should i have to pay?

It's unusual for the battery to simply die. Li-Ion batteries gradually lose capacity over the course of time; it typically takes several hundred full charge cycles before significant degradation occurs. I believe Apple states that after 400 charge cycles, an iPod battery retains about 80% of its original capacity. I've had a 5th Gen Video for about three years and it is still going strong. The typical reason an iPod battery (or any rechargeable) just dies is due to moisture.
In any event, regardless of why the battery died, if your iPod is 13 months old, you will need to pay to replace the battery. This link explains Apple's battery replacement policy.

  • IPod 1st Gen (Touch wheel, 10GB) isn't recognized - missing software?

Recently, my 80GB video iPod decided to simply die on me, so I dug out my very first iPod, from 2001 or '02 I believe.
It turns on fine, can scroll through menus, but there's nothing on it anymore - plug it into my computer (firewire-to-firewire), and the iPod goes through a menu where there's the disc and a magnifying glass and eventually a check mark (connotating that everything's fine) - but it never docks onto the computer or shows up on iTunes.
I've SCOURED the internet for old iPod software updates, trying to find one early enough, so it can recognize it and I can restore and hopefully the problem will be fixed - but there's been SO many iPods since then, it's ancient, and no support was found anywhere.
Does anyone have a solution, or a link to the earliest of iPod updaters? I looked for documentation, but it was 9 years ago - I don't have the CD anymore or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
*In the 'About' menu on the iPod, the current version that's installed is 1.5 - don't know if that matters.
**I'm trying to connect to a 15-inch PowerBook G4 (Aluminum?), currently installed with iTunes 8
Message was edited by: Cassidy Knight (still)

The current version of iTunes should be able to connect to even the 1st gen iPod. The one you have is 2nd gen, if it's the one with the four clicking buttons around the touch wheel. I have one of those, and although I use it as my little emergency/maintenance FireWire startup drive (because the screen failed on it), it is still recognized by iTunes on my Mac. Over FireWire, of course.
The first thing you should try is to put it into Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
Note: The procedure for your iPod is at the bottom, where it says +If you have an older iPod model without a Click Wheel+.
If that works, connect it to the computer. Hopefully it will appear both on your desktop and in iTunes. If so, use the Restore button in iTunes to erase the iPod's hard drive and initialize its software. The latest available version of the software for that iPod will be installed.
You may also want to try a different FireWire cable. It's just a regular cable, so you don't have to use the thin white one.

  • Various hardware issues with Asus G73

    Hello everybody,
First let me say that issue I'm experiencing is caused by hardware malfunction I need help diagnosing.
Since it has nothing to do with Arch (or any other OS for that matter), I hope this is the right place to post.
Now, let's get to the problem.
I have Asus G73-JW laptop. It's 'desktop replacement' machine from 2010 based on
Nehalem platform (i7-740QM @ 1.7GHz) paired with nVidia 460m and 8 GB of ram.
It has not so nice 17" 1080p screen and 750GB HDD and 60GB SSD as storage.
Few months ago I started playing Battlefield 3 on dual-booted Windows 7 and native Steam Team Fortress 2 on x64 Arch.
While playing those games weird things began to happen.
First, laptop started emmiting loud, extremely annoying high-pitched noise. After a while noise fades but fans start
running on full speed. Screen backlight flickers (as if it was a recording with an old camera) unless it's set to max
when picture appears normal. Keyboard becomes unresponsive. It works, but it's not enough to just press keys,
they need to be pressed for much longer than usual. Maybe for half a second or less, but enough to make keyboard
unusable. Keyboard backlight turns off if it was on (and vice versa) and can't be controlled with hotkeys.
At that time, I suspected this is somehow related to GPU since laptop was functioning perfectly normal unless in a
game or GPU benchmark. Even really CPU intensive tasks such as building CyanogenMod which drove CPU temperature
over 90C caused no issues. But after some time these sympthoms started showing regardles to GPU usage or system load,
which led me to recognising few more of them and making sure this is not software problem since it's exibited on Arch and
few other distros, Windows 7 and 8.
After laptop goes nuts, it can be normalized either by shutting down or suspending to ram.
During sleep few LEDs that are normally blinking will stay on. After they start blinking again everything will work normally after
waking up (for some time, that is) and it will be possible to wake it on any key. If LEDs are stuck, only power key works.
In the begining it took it few hours or more to become normal, but now 20-30 minutes is enough and same amount of time applies
for both powering up and waking from sleep. Even if laptop didn't 'calm down', it will be silent during wake up process, but fans will
kick in full speed right after. If power cable gets removed out while on rampage, keyboard and touchpad simply die. If I shut it down
without power pluged in, it won't be possible to turn it back on without waiting a while. Whether it's with or without battery, or running
only on battery power, makes no difference - fans keep on spinning as fast as they can.
Even though temperatures are completely normal - CPU in mid 40s, GPU somewhat hotter, I thought something that is not reporting
temperature to OS (chipset or whatever) might be overheating, so I took it apart. After cleaning everything thoroughly, changing
thermal paste and thermal pads, nothing changed besides temperatures which are few degrees lower now. While open, I took the
chance to look for anything that doesn't look normal, leaked capacitors, unsoldered components, but everything looked just fine.
I have googled my ass off, but I have been unable to find any similar reports for this or any other notebook.
As far as logs go, I don't think there is anything to give you except maybe kernel log.
I'm trying to diagnose problem myself (and, if possible, fix it) because everything that runs on electricity is so damn expensive here,
not to mention repair shop services and their prices. Warranty is long gone, and since laptop was bought on US Amazon, I'm not sure it
would have done me any good here in Bosnia.
I would really apreciate any help and if there is any useful info I didn't provide, please let me know.
    Thanks in advance,
    Šaran.

Since few days ago battery LED sometimes blinks red although acpi reports 100% full.

  • Mail hangs on open & Crashes Mac

This past weekend I've been having severe problems with Mail. First it began hanging when you open the program with the spinning beach ball as it was trying to connect to the server. Righ clicking on the mail icon indicated that the application was not responding. If you tried to force quit it would lock up the whole computer.
Several suggestions indicated doing things like taking the envelope index journal out the library/mail directory. During the rebuilds (i've tried this four times now) it would crash with the darkened screen indicating that you had to reboot the computer. On the few successful rebuilds, it still hung up the program when checking email.
Another suggestion was to delete the mail.plist file. I did that and redid all the account information. No luck.
Another suggestion was the open mail with the shift key held down. No Luck.
I'm about at my wits end. I spent the last few months fighting my computer since I put Tiger on it. I've wiped the entire harddrive and did a complete rebuild two weeks ago. It seemed better but still now stable. Any suggestions? Is my Mac simply dying and I need a new computer?
My TI powerbook G4 1GHZ Has been running flawlessly with identical software as the Powermax G4 Mirror door. That is was is leading me to believe that hardware problems are underlying this whole thing!
    You help is greatly appreciated!

This is not necessarily a solution but more of a troubleshooting tip. Take the ENTIRE Mail folder in [Your User Directory]->Library, make a copy of it and then move it out of the library folder, say just to applications or something. Then reboot and try launching Mail. If it doesn't launch you have a software issue. If it does launch you have a data issue and you may want to move each mailbox back one at a time. If it's software, try booting from a CD and doing a Repair. That rarely works but it's worth a shot. If you'd like any details on the general steps suggested let me know.
