Do mobile apps developed with Flash Builder 4.5 rely on a redistributable or virtual machine?

I'm very new to Flash Builder 4.5 and am still trying to get my head around it.  I'm freelance and my primary code pimp has asked me to justify using FB 4.5 to develop mobile apps rather than something like PhoneGap or native SDKs (Objective C, Java, etc.).
I'm quite impressed with FB 4.5 and it seems quite plain to me that FB 4.5 tries very hard to provide all the tools necessary to create iOS/Android/Blackberry apps all from a single code base but I'm wondering a few things:
1) Does this require the use of a redistributable or virtual machine?  I'm wondering both from a performance standpoint but also just to understand better how FB 4.5 provides this magic one-project-for-all-platforms capability.  I'm guessing there must be some kind of virtual machine abstraction in use -- or does FB 4.5 generate a fully native application for each platform without the need for a machine abstraction layer?
2) Has anyone encountered a situation where any of the target platforms lack features or behave differently?  E.g., "I cannot access some hardware feature like the accelerometer on Android under certain conditions."
3) Can anyone speak to the relative benefits or penalties that FB 4.5 offers relative to PhoneGap or other HTML 5 solutions?

Try to avoid using MX components in mobile apps.

  • Starting iOS development with Flash Builder 4.6

    Hi guys,
I want to start iOS development with Flash Builder 4.6. I have iPad 2 with iOS 6 installed (latest version available).
I was following this tutorial step by step: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flex/mobileapps/WS064a3073e805330f6c6abf312e7545f65e-8000.html #WSe4e4b720da9dedb5-27e02e9a12ee20e4a60-7fff
As a part of it I also did this:
    Convert a developer certificate into a P12 file - http://help.adobe.com/en_US/as3/iphone/WS144092a96ffef7cc-371badff126abc17b1f-7fff.html
    Installed AIR SDK version 3.4.0.2540 as for 4.5 (I have 4.6) - http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-builder/kb/error-run-debug-deploy-ios.html
I try Now I am getting the follwoing errors:
Error occurred while packaging the application:
SDK is missing file /Applications/Adobe Flash Builder 4.6/sdks/4.6.0/lib/aot/lib/AIRInterpreter
Error occurred while packaging the application:
SDK is missing file /Applications/Adobe Flash Builder 4.6/sdks/4.6.0/lib/aot/bin/ld64/i686-apple-darwin9-ld64
Required files are missing indeed. But where can I find them if AIR SDK doesn't have them? What should I do now?

All the files in lib/aot/ are part of the AIR sdk.
You'll have to overlay the AIR sdk on top of the Flex SDK (which comes with FlashBuilder).
On windows, simply copy-paste the AIR folder on the Flex SDK folder. (merge the two folders)
On mac, use a command line and ditto the AIR sdk folder on Flex SDK folder.

  • Difficulty with Licensing Android apps developed with Flash CS6

Hi, I'm heading down many a blind alley with this one. I have developed an Android app using Flash CS6 and it is ready to be published on Google Play. However, as it is a paid app, it is strongly advised to license it to protect it.
There is a bit of documentation on how to do this with Flash Builder, but I need to be able to do it with Flash. The following link provides some info, though it is far too confusing for me to follow.
    http://www.rybram.com/index.php/blog/61-air-30-android-licensing-tutorial-project
The Android developer page has info about it here, but it keeps refering to the Manifest file.
    http://developer.android.com/google/play/licensing/adding-licensing.html
I've seen a few other threads on here touching on this subject, but I have not had any luck with them. There's lots of references to Air Native Extensions that handle licensing but I don't understand them.
I'm quite surprised that there is no support from Adobe on such a fundamental stage of the app production. Basically, anyone developing Android apps using the otherwise fantastic Flash CS6 will have trouble protecting their apps with licenses once published, meaning that anyone can just grab the .apk file and redistribute it anywhere.

I think what I need is the idiot's guide
As long as you don`t make this attudude a habit
It might be best that you hire someone to look into the matter, pushing out sth. on the market with no real plan
I'm heading down many a blind alley with this one
could get you into serious trouble with customers that buy your product, experiencing trouble with some kind of DRM you are blindfoldedly implementing and having no clue how to fix it.
    Just saying.
You wouldn`t surely feel comfortably buying from a developer who is admitting to have no clue what he/she is doing, would you?

Do mobile users using Android/Apple apps created in flash builder 4.7 need to install Air in order to run the apps? Can the apps be ran without Air installation?

I haven't seen this come up, however you might want to give our latest AIR 3.5 build a try (12/11/2012 - AIR 3.5 Runtime and SDK Update).  If it still occurs, could you please open a new bug report on this over at bugbase.adobe.com?  Please post back with the URL so that others affected can add their comments and votes.

  • Mobile App Development with 4.0 ?

    Greetings!
I am just about to get into mobile app development. Our Company thou still operates Apes 4.0 and we are waiting for the 4.2 release, before we do the upgrade. On the other hand, the mobile app should be ready earlier due to customer requests.
Now I myself I am still quite new to Apex. I have done some research about what you can do with earlier versions, but havn't really found anything very usefull yet. So I would like so ask here for some advice. I could try building the GUI myself with jquery, installing the latest jquery/mobile versions, fixing the templates, building my own templates, etc., but that would be a humungous work and not the apex-idea.
Are there template plugins for tablet and iPhone GUI elements, that - maybe with a little tweeking - run on apex 4.0, including the touch-screen effects like "swiping" to the next page?
Or would you suggest, to upgrade to 4.1, even thou in 3-4 months we might have to make the upgrade again?
For any link to related articles I will be very gratefull, too.
    Best regards,
    tobi

1)Which is the latest version that supports mobile app development ?None.
1.3 did support mobile development to some limited extent, but that is a deprecated dead branch and no longer supported.
You can run JavaFX on a Windows 7 or 8 tablet PC, but my guess is that by mobile app development you mean iOS/Android - neither of which are supported.
2)Will it have the cross device support?Perhaps there will be a version of JavaFX that runs on iOS/Android at some time in the future.
There are people working on making this possible =>

  • How do I import a custom mobile app UI in Flash Builder?

Hey everyone.  I'm new to mobile development and just Flash Builder in general.  I created a custom UI using Photoshop and now that Catalyst files aren't supported in FB 4.6, how would I go about creating or importing a UI for my mobile app?  I can't seem to find a difinitive answer on the topic any where so any help would be awesome.

  • Tools for Mobile App Development with HTML5/CSS

    Hi --
I am interested in learning to develop cross platform mobile apps using HTML5 and CSS.
Which Adobe product(s) (and other tools) are best for this?
I'm guessing that Apache Cordova and Adobe PhoneGap Build are places to start but I'm looking for input from others.
I'm also guessing the Adobe Edge products are appropriate "IDEs" for this kind of thing?
What does Cordova bring to the table that isn't available in native HTML5/CSS?
I apologize if this is not the correct forum for this question but upon reviewing the list of available forums this seemed like the best fit.
    Thanks
    Rich

    Rich,
There are few routs you could go to create a Mobile App using Adobe tools.
    1. Adobe Muse then export from Muse and visit build.adobe.com as Brad pointed out here:
Can I make a Mobile site with Muse and then go through PhoneGap?
"Export as HTML and the create a zip file with the contents. Go to Phonegap,s website and submit the app directly from there instead of through Dreamweaver."
    2. Dreamweaver and Phonegap build access inside Dreamweaver. Read other users experiences on this community form before you rely solely on Dreamweaver to upload your app to build.adobe.com
    3. Manually coding and uploading your html, js, css, assets (images, audio etc) files coded either in new adobe Edge Code or Dreamweaver to build.phonegap.com
For easier graphic editing for media devices use Adobe's Fireworks graphics software instead of Adobe Photoshop for graphics. Once you start on your project there are various workflows you can use depending on what you are trying to make.

  • Is mp3 licensing required for stand alone apps created with Flash Builder?

I've been writing some interactive educational software in ActionScript that utilizes Adobe AIR and plays mp3 files to communicate/instruct the user.   I was wondering if I would need to pay mp3 licensing fees based on what I found at mp3licensing.com
I wrote to the folks at mplicensing.com and got the following question in reply:
Will the software itself include mp3 decode (playback) capability, or will it be using the decoder provided in Android.  If the software doesn’t include mp3 code itself, but simply includes mp3 files for playback by the hardware device mp3 code, than you would need our content distribution license, not our electronic gaming license.
If this is true, then it may be that no license is needed at all, since we exempt from the need for our license any entity with mp3 revenues below USD $100,000 per year.
    I responded:
I am writing this software in ActionScript using Adobe Flash Builder to create a stand alone application that will be bundled with Adobe AIR and use Adobe AIR to run.  AIR supports Android, iOS, PC desktops, and Macs.
    they replied:
I am not sure if AIR will play .mp3 files. If it does, and your code does not have mp3 encode or decode functionality, and AIR is simply used to play the content, and your revenues do not exceed USD $100,000 per year, our license is not required.
My question now is:   Does Adobe AIR use the decoder provided in Android or does it have it's own decoding code?   Are we subject to the licensing fees for games, etc when distributing programs that play MP3 files using Adobe AIR?
    Thanks,
    Robert

That site helps a little bit, but not totally.  My existing server is Windows 2003 with 5 CALs included, and it works, though not because I understand the head-spinning details of Microsoft licensing.  For example, I have no idea if I am actually
using the CALs, since the only thing ever done on that server (aside from web, email, and FTP) is me logging in by RDP to administer it.
I never considered 2008 Web edition because I might want to install something like the Access GUI, and the Web edition seems to forbid that.  It was not clear if you could install third-party ftp server or mail server also.  Web edition was a mysterious
product and is not my reference point.
It would be nice if Essentials could run a web server, since it's cheaper and simpler in terms of licensing.  But nowhere is that stated yea or nay.
If I buy 2012 standard, do I need to spring for 5 CALs also?  I need to administer by RDP, and have the other server drop backups onto the disk of the new one.

  • Flex iPad Application : Run code before application enters background  Application Type: Flex Mobile Application Target Platform: iPad AIR Version: 4.0 Development Environment: Flash builder 4.6  I want to run some code just before iphone application goes

    Application Type: Flex Mobile Application
    Target Platform: iPad
    AIR Version: 4.0
    Development Environment: Flash builder 4.6
I want to run some code just before iphone application goes into background. I need function similar to didEnterBackground
    of native xcode app
    (https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/UIKit/Reference/UIApplicationDelegat e_Protocol/Reference/Reference.h
    tml#//apple_ref/occ/intfm/UIApplicationDelegate/applicationDidEnterBackground:)
I tried using devactivated function of flash.display.STAGE.
    I used following addEventListener:
    STAGE = this.parent.stage;
    STAGE.addEventListener(Event.DEACTIVATE, onAppDeactivated);
It worked for me but only when device is connected to development environment in debug mode. When I create my release build
    it is not working.
So how can I make sure that my code runs before application goes into background.

Even I am facing almost same issue

  • Flex mobile 4.6 app works inside flash builder but not in android emulator

Originally posted on stackoverflow: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8663892/flex-mobile-4-6-app-works-inside-flash-builder- but-not-in-android-emulator
I have a basic flex mobile 4.6 app and it works fully fine in the flash builder built-in emulator using an android device profile like aria...
It also launches fine in the android emulator but one particular view shows blank (and this view works fine in flash builder).
Before I get in to many details of the view are there any categorical gotchas that can be causing this?
I can't seem to get the trace statements from the app to show in 'adb logcat'. It seems I need to compile a debug version of the apk but I don't know how to do this. I use the 'Export Release Build' from the Project menu in flash builder and it doesn't seem to have an option for debug=true.
The problematic/blank view basically uses the stagewebview and iotashan's oauth library to call linkedin rest apis... A different (and working) view can make restful web service calls in the emulator fine, so it doesn't seem to be an internet permission.
The source code contained in the problematic/blank view is almost identical to the tutorial found at:http://www.riagora.com/2011/01/air-and-linkedin/
The differences are: a) The root tag is a View b) I use StageWebView instead of HtmlContainer c) I use my own linkedin key and tokens.
I would appreciate it if someone can provide me with some pointers on how to troubleshoot this situation. Perhaps someone can tell me how to debug the app while running in the emulator (I think I need the correct adt command arguments for this which matches the 'Export Release Build' menu but adds the debug param?)
Thanks for your help in advance.
    Comment Added:
I suspect that this has to do with connections to https:// api.linkedin.com and https:// www.linkedin.com. The only reason I can think of that the same code is not having issues inside of Flex Builder but indeed having issues in the Android emulator is something to do with certificates. Any ideas?

    Thanks er453r,
I have created a project that clearly reproduces the bug.  Here are the steps:
    1) Create a UrlLoader and point it to https://www.google.com (HTTPS is important because http works but HTTPS does not)
    2) Load it
    3) Run in Flash Builder 4.6/Air 3.1 and then run in Android emulator.  The former works with an http status 200.  The latter gives you an ioerror 2032.  I am assuming what works in Flash Builder is supposed to work in the Android Emulator and what what works in the emulator is supposed to work in a physical device (plus or minus boundary conditions).
I see a certificate exception in adb logcat but not sure if it's related...
Here is the self contained View code which works with a TabbedViewNavigatorApplication:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <s:View xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
                        xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
