E72 low memory - What processes can we kill to imp...

Latest firmware improves memory management a bit but the E72's low free RAM is still its weakest point in my opinion.
I use JBakTaskManager at startup and the only think I kill right now is vcommandmanager. I've seen other recommendations of tasks and processes than can be killed to free up RAM but have not tested those in detail yet.
Anyone care to share some opinions on what to kill?
(shame on Nokia for not loading up the E72 with 256 MB RAM as other announced models)

Have you managed to find any other tasks that can be safely killed, if you have World Traveller installed it creates two tasks witch can be killed
thanks Neil

  • CPU at 100% on stuck process, can't kill?

I was running Personal Backup from Intego without issues on Lion, but have had no luck with Mountain Lion. The backup freezes, one of the 8-virtual CPU cores sticks at 100% and I cannot kill the process, not from the Force Quit menu, not from the Activity Monitor and not from the Terminal using sudo kill -9 pid.
Is there any other way to kill this process without re-booting? I can't even shut down the machine without doing a hard reset.

No idea, but have you tried restoring the phone, and setting it up as new to see if it happens there?
If not then restore from your backup. If the issue comes back then the issue lies wiht the backup file you are using.

  • Opt-out low memory 512mb devices for from accessing a Universal app project app in the Store

I would like to opt out low memory 512mb Windows Phone devices from finding and downloading our app. The suggested method to add the tag <m3:MinDeviceMemory>1GB</m3:MinDeviceMemory>
into the appx manifest didn't help us to achieve our goal. Low memory devices still can find and install our app. The app is Universal app. The app id is 1f2239bf-87ce-428f-b91f-823aa7e1ae6a.
    Thanks.

    Hi Alex,
I found such features, but it was for windows phone 8 and windows phone 8.1 silverlight only. You can see it in Memory-related manifest entries section in the following link.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/jj681682(v=vs.105).aspx.
In this case, I would recommend you check the device memory at runtime and disable some features when it is necessary. Use
this one to check the memory in phone project in universal app.

The iPad worked well, but friend started playing Nemos reef,, no problem to level 20 now the Disney app is crashing all the time and occasionally Facebook and Safari crash. There is low memory reports but I do not know how to improve that. I did delete some apps but didn't help. Disney no help because I am in UK although they were happy to take money for in-app purchases!

    Do two things:
    1.  In Settings > iTunes & App Stores, turn off automatic downloads for Apps.
    2.  Assuming you sync using iTunes, turn off the automatic app syncing on the App tab when you have the iPads connected that should not receive the downloads.

why firefox use very much memory?
can you develop to reduce memory comsume?
this problem is very distrub in my PC with low memory.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

How much memory is Firefox using right now?
    # Press '''CTRL+SHIFT+ESC''' to load the Task Manager window
    # Click the Processes tab at the top. (Click once near the top of the window if you don't see tab
    # Find firefox.exe, and see how many kilobytes of memory it's using.
Showing around 80MB when Firefox first starts is normal. Right now, I have 75 tabs open and it's using 500MB - this varies a lot depending on what you have in the tabs.
Other than high memory usage, what other problems are you experiencing? (Examples include slowness, high CPU usage, and failure to load certain sites)
Many of these issues, including high memory usage, can be caused by misbehaving add-ons. To see if this is the case, try the steps at [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]. Outdated plugins are another cause of this issue - you can check for this at http://www.mozilla.com/plugincheck

  • What's the recommended setting for "Process memory usage" ("process virtual" in UI) for a 64-bit host on a 64-bit OS?

    Hi gurus
In resource based throttling, what's the recommended setting for "Process memory usage" ("process virtual" in the resource based throttling tab of the UI) for a 64-bit host
    on a 64-bit Windows OS?
    According to MS (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee308808(v=bts.10).aspx):
    "By default, the
Process memory usage throttling threshold is set to 25. If this value is exceeded and the BizTalk process memory usage is more than 300 MB, a throttling condition may occur. On a 32-bit
server, you can increase the Process memory usage value to 50. On a 64-bit server, you can increase this value to 100. This allows for more memory consumption by the BizTalk process before throttling
    occurs."
Does this mean that 100 is the recommended setting for a 64-bit host on a 64-bit Windows?
    Thanks
    Michael Brandt Lassen

    Hi Michael,
Recommended setting is the default setting which is 25 .dot.
If your situation is abnormal and you see message delivery throttling state to “4” when the following performance counters are high or if you expect any of you integration
process could have impact on following counters, then you can consider the suggestion by Microsoft. Don’t change the default setting.
    High process memory
    Process memory usage (MB)
    Process memory usage threshold (MB)
You can see these counters under “BizTalk:MessageAgent”
You can gauge these performance counter and its maximum values if have done any regression/performance testing in your test servers. If you have seen these counters having
high values and causing throttling, then you can update the Process memory usage.
Or unexpectedly you’re process high throughput messages in production which is causing these counters to go high and cause throttling, then up can update the Process memory
    usage.
The above two cases where I know my expected process usage (by doing performance testing) or suddenly my production server processing has gone high due to unexpected business
hike (or any reasons) which caused throttling, then do changes to default throttling setting.
Just changing the default setting without actual reason could have adverse effect where you end up allocating
more processing capacities but the actual message processing message usage ever is low means you end up investing in underutilised resources.

  • Powerbook Lower Memory Slot Issue, what are my options?

    Hi there,
I have a Powerbook G4 1.5ghz that I purchased in October of 2004. I had no problems with it until after upgrading the RAM to 2 x 512mb chips and then installing Tiger which resulted in me later notcing the missing RAM and learning about the lower memory slot failure issue.
I find that sometimes if I remove the RAM and try and power it up and then replace the RAM again that the lower slot ocassionaly does come back. Trouble is though that the machine will either crash or I loose the other RAM slot when I have to shut it down. It seems to be so intermittent this way and I'm tired of constantly removing the RAM to fiddle about with it.
My serial number begins W8441, so it isn't covered by the returns programe. I would call Apple Support, but I am put off by a £35 charge just to have them discuss and diagnose the problem.
I'm in the UK and as I don't have Applecare and I'm not elgiable for the returns programe can anyone tell me what they charge for a logic board replacment? Looking at what they charge in the US, it's not cheap.
I use my Powebook for Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, After Effects mainly and I had been alright with 1gig when it was working.
I'm really trying to decide what the best thing to do is....
    - Do I pay for the logic board replacement, which I'm not really sure I can afford right now, or to be without my machine... especially as I have read that it can just fail again.
    - Should I just buy a 1gig stick for the upper slot and try and sell my old RAM, as that would be cheaper than getting the logic board replaced?
It's a real shame that Apple doesn't seem to want to ackowledge that this effects other users as I'd been so impressed with everything about Apple up until now.
    Thanks for any advice.

(Browse down for findings and questions).
The notorious lower-memory-slot-bug has hit my finally too... I never believed it until now (and I've immediately signed the petition).
I am outside warranty and I never bought Applecare either.
Also my powerbook, a very dear machine to me, is a less common type to have this problem: a 1 GHz G4 15" FireWire 800 OS 10.3.9 type. Funny enough my older powerbook ( a G3 Bronze) is still running strong with no problems whatsoever.
My G4 15" also has the "white spots" problem and a dead superdrive... I cannot believe how many hardware problems I'm having with this machine in comparison to all my older macs - even my sluggish powerMac 7200/90 never gave me this many headaches...
Alright, I'll stop complaining for now.
I've been able to browse the internet on this and found the following statements:
The lower memory slot gets "fried" because of a OS 10.3.9 upgrade,
or possibly due to overheating when the powerbook is put on the users' lap,
or possibly due to picking the powerbook up by the corners so the metal gets bent.
+ I have only seen one case where someone's UPPER memory slot was defective.
The solution to this problem (replacing the logic board) didn't seem to be definate in many cases so I'm reluctant to try this myself (and I have very little money). The alternative (replacing the upper slot memory with a bigger type of RAM) seems a bit scary to me,
    because I wonder:
-will the upper memory slot RAM get "fried" eventually as well after a while?
-do you need to have something installed in the lower slot or is it possible to just install one RAM card only?
-are there more people with a 1 GHz PB that have this problem? It seems it's mostly people with a 1,67 GHz that have been bitten by this bug and maybe that's why Apple decided to give the majority a free repair. I am not sure whether that is a common policy, I am part of the minority it seems.
As a solutions someone posted on a board that we should all buy KTA-PBG4333/1G RAM, but here in Dutch stores it is said this memory is only compatible with 17" powerbooks....
Does anyone know if it is suitable for 15" as well??

  • [Solved]No kill binary but I can still kill processes?

    Hello!
I just migrated my laptop to EXT4 with the 2009.02-beta4 ISO (beta I know). Now everything seems to work fine except for when I power off my laptop, stopping the network spews out this error: "/etc/rc.d/network: line 62: /bin/kill: No such file or directory [DONE]".
I checked /bin/ and sure enough there was no kill there so I ran 'which kill' and it came out empty as well. The only place I could find my kill was at /usr/lib/klibc/bin/kill which seems a bit odd, at least to me. Now it still shuts down and all and I _can_ kill processes with the kill command but I'm curious why this happened. I can't find anything about this 'bug' (if it even is one) on the bugtracker so, anyone know what's up with this?

Ah, alright so I guess bash offers this feature as well then. Installing procps did the trick, thanks.

  • Can't kill hung process in Leopard

I am having very annoying issue with Leopard. Time to time some applications get stuck and I can't kill them using "force quit" or command line "kill -9". Most of the times when this happens, I can't log out and start new applications. I cannot even restart the computer cleanly as it cannot log me out cleanly (BTW, is there a force log out or force restart?) Once this happens everything goes downhill and eventually I have to do hard reboot by pressing power off key in the back. That creates another problem. I have a USB external disk that I use as time machine backup. After I do hard reboot and machine boot up, finder thinks that index on the external disk is not up to date and starts indexing it from scratch and takes 2-3 hours. Also, when it starts building index, it spends good 5 minutes or so trying to estimate the index building time. During that time, I cannot search anything on the machine.
I called Apple support twice. First they asked me to do "archive and install". I did that but problems still continued. After that they said do "disk check" and "disk permissions check". "Disk check" didn't show any problem. "Disk permissions check" found many files with permissions problem and they were all fixed. Even after that the problem continues.
I have 4 users on the machine. I am the administrator. Others are limited accounts. I have noticed hang problem with all accounts. On my account it occurs with many processes like Safari, imovie, iPhoto, and even finder. On other accounts I have seen it mostly with Safari. I saw the problem with Safari on other accounts even with Tiger. On other accounts though I am able to kill the application using "force quit" but not on my account.
I think the root cause of all of these is Leopard's inability to force-kill a process. I have a hunch that this happens (not able to kill app in my account) with processes that deal with devices. For example, Iphoto deals with external memory card, Imovie deals with external digital camcorders and so on.
I have an open case with Apple support. I want to see if others are running into same issue.

I was having these very same issues.
I wiped the drive with zeroes and tried to reinstall Leopard from scratch. Install failed. Checked the install DVD, it passed its own test. Verified the hard drive, fine.
Reinstalled Tiger. Everything fine. Tried to upgrade to Leopard, install DVD was again failng.
    I did some research.
*It turns out that Leopard on PPC Macs will freak out on many types of third party RAM.*
I removed the aftermarket stick of RAM and Leopard installed just fine and ran fine. No more problems. I put the RAM back in, problems returned.
There you have it. Tiger was fine with the memory, Leopard isn't. And this is for some reason a PPC-specific issue.
    Search for:
"The installer could not validate the contents of the ‘base system’ package. Contact software manufacturer for assistance."
Here are two to get you started:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=374917&page=2
    http://www.mobrec.com/2007/10/27/leopard-is-damage-if-you-are-on-powerpc-do-not- install/
The key is in realizing that both sets of symptoms occur for some people because they're 'lucky' to get Leopard installed in the first place. If you wipe and install, you get to witness all the behaviors under a controlled experiment (memory in vs out).

What is the exact error being displayed on the device?
Has any attempt been made at managing the media on the device via iTunes?

  • Several times over the last few days while on safari my iPad spontaneously shuts off screen goes dark then goes to home screen what's going on and how do I fix it when I look at settings diagnostics it says that there is low memory ?

Safari crashes several times while on pinterest, screen goes black then goes to home screen when I start safari again it keeps doing the same thing.  I checked the diagnostics page and there are several references stating low memory yet when I check the memory on the iPad there is plenty of memory  help please

The memory that is low is the processor memory, not the overall storage space.  Next time, before you go to that site, double tap the home button to see the task bar.  You will see the list of apps siting in the recently used list.  Most of them are not doing anything, but some of them are using up memory.  Touch and hold any one of them until they jiggle, then close them all off by touching the minus sign.
Do that every so often to help the pad use it's memory wisely.
Some apps, and browser pages use a lot of memory, and do not give it back easily, causing what sis happening to you.
You can also get a similar result by rebooting.  Press and hold the home and sleep buttons until the apple logo appears, ignore the red slider.

Will the oracle automatically perform recovery???
    will the database startup?

If you want to face what actually will happen, just make it on test environment (test db).
Then check your db status, instance will be abort.
Do you know what SMON`s purpose ?
    If you_dont_know then
    make it; (ps -ef | grep smon take PID, then kill -9 PID);
    end if;
SMON - System Monitor process recovers after instance failure and monitors temporary segments and extents. SMON in a non-failed instance can also perform failed instance recovery for other failed RAC instance.
