Exchange Server 2010: Convert Mailbox to MailUser
Dear All,
I plan to cutover migration exchange on-premises to exchange online with single-sign-on.
http://community.office365.com/en-us/w/exchange/835.cutover-exchange-migration-and-single-sign-on.aspx
In Step 2: It need to Convert on-premises mailboxes to mail-enabled users. it has only instruction guide for exchange server 2003 and 2007. it didn't have for exchange server 2010 or 2013.
Could you guide what is the best solution to convert mailbox in exchange server 2010?
BR,
Khemarin
[email protected]
Hi Khemarin,
You can use the following cmdlet to convert a mailbox to a MailUser:
$DomainController = (Get-ADServerSettings).DefaultConfigurationDomainController.domain
$MailboxList= Get-Mailbox
foreach ($Mailbox in $MailboxList) {
Disable-Mailbox -Id $mailbox.Identity -Confirm:$False -DomainController $DomainController
Enable-MailUser -Id $mailbox.Identity -ExternalEmailAddress ($mailbox.alias +"@domain.com") -DomainController $DomainController
Set-MailUser -Id $mailbox.Identity `
-DomainController $DomainController `
-CustomAttribute1 $Mailbox.CustomAttribute1

Exchange Server 2010 Room Mailboxes Double Booking
We are have several room mailboxes setup on Exchange Server 2010 and are having an issue with rooms being double booked.
I have "Allow Conflicting Meeting Requests" unchecked on the Resource Policy Tab but if a user try's to book a room that is already reserved it gets accepted and put on the calendar.
How do I stop this from happening?

SCOM 2012 R2 & Exchange Server 2010 SP3 - Mailbox services not monitored
Having done everything depicted in Exchange Server 2010 MP I still have trouble with some Exchange services - they are in not monitored state (five days passed):
Mailbox All Database Services - Default-First-Site-Name
Mailbox Database Service - Management - test.local
Mailbox Database Service - PublicFolders - test.local
Mailbox Database Service - Users - test.local
Mailbox Many Database Service - Default-First-Site-Name
OfflineAddressBook Service - Default-First-Site-Name
Why is this happening? Since monitoring exchange mailbox databases is one of the most important tasks SCOM should be doing I assume something wrong is going on here. However there are no errors or alerts in SCOM console nor in OpsMgr
log on Exchange server itself.Hi There,
Did you install the Microsoft Exchange monitoring correletion service while importing the Exchange 2010 management pack ?
Does your MS have RMS Emulator role ? As many alerts in the Exchange 2010 MP are targetted to Root management server class.
Also did you configure Test mailboxex and stuff post Exchange 2010 Import ?
Did you analyse the Ops manager Event logs in the MS and Agent ? Can you post the critical and Warnign events here.
Also is Agent proxy enabled ?
Also is the Action account of the Agents System or Domain account ?

I have 2 exchange server "A" and "B". Server "A" have "Test1" database and Server "B" have "Test2" database. I tried move some mailboxes from "Test1" to "Test2"
but sometimes mailboxes cannot finished and display below error. I used Domain administrator to move mailboxes and grant "Manage full access permission" to these mailboxes but still failed. Finally, I clear the failed move request
and repeat the move mailboxes action several times. Then, the move request completed without error. Have any suggestion? Please help. Thank you!
Mailbox move for 'xxx.com/xxx/xxx/xxx - Users/xxx/Peter' (331d5b4e-0bd1-428a-ae28-d97581ae0d7f) has failed.

This could happen if there is any mailbox which has occupied more space than its normal quota allocated.
As suggested by geo try to clean all the DB's first
You can probably run Get-Mailboxdatabase | Clean-Mailboxdatabase which will clean all of your DB's wait for some time until it gets completed
Also try running the command with the MRS server parameter switch and specify a CAS FQDN and see the results if it gets succeded
Get-Mailbox -Database 'DBNAME'| New-MoveRequest -TargetDatabase DBNAME -BatchName "BATCHNAME" -BadItemLimit 100 -AcceptLargeDataLoss -MRSserver CAS server FQDN Good Luck !!Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. That will encourage me - and others - to take time out to help you.

Exchange server 2010 - Resource mailbox not showing up in GAL
i created a new resource user and mailbox and can not see it in the GAL when I go to set a new meeting. If I go to the Outlook Web Acces I can see the
new resource. How can I get the GAL to see the new resource so all staff can start signing up for it
The
GAL (Global Address List) is essentially a list of all email recipients in your organization. It
does not contain other address lists. It could
however contain distribution groups.
Address lists are like the GAL,
but more specific. For example: “All Rooms”. This
would show all room mailboxes. All room mailboxes
would also appear in the GAL.
You
don’t email an address list. These are for
recipient browsing/clicking only. You may be
confusing Address Lists with Distribution groups.
Outlook
running in cached mode doesn’t connect to Exchange for either of these two types of address lists. Instead
it uses what’s called an OAB (Offline Address Book) which is generated by a mailbox server once a day and distributed by a client access server or via system Public Folder.
Anytime
there is an issue with an address list, I check using Outlook in online mode or through OWA; since neither of these methods use an offline copy of data. If
you find OWA works and Outlook cached mode doesn’t; it may be due to OAB generation issues or delays. The default update interval
of OAB is 12 hours. You need to need until then to get it displayed in the GAL for Outlook Cached Mode...if you not you can go Outlook online Mode
Please refer to 13 in this
link:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/0752c1fc-1a6b-4c42-a10a-a280db2f59b8#13
If the OAB still can’t
be updated after 12 hours please enable the diagnostic logging for MSexchangeSA>OAL Generator to maximum.

How to configure Mailbox Read-Only access for Mailbox's owner on Exchange Server 2010?
I have to configure the Exchange Server 2010's mailbox to only grant Read-Only Access on the mailbox's owners. So they can only allowed to read their messages and cannot modify or remove them. Are there any references or methods to do?
Hi,alexchy8
We can make use of 2 PowerShell commands to achieve this goal.
Add-MailboxPermission and Add-MailboxFolderPermission.
Execute the Add-MailboxPermission command to delegate the read permission at mailbox level.
Execute the Add-MailboxFolderPermission command to delegate the required permissions on specific folders inside the mailbox.
You can read the following article as reference:

Problems installing Mailbox role on Exchange Server 2010 SP3
I am in the process of installing Exchange Server 2010 SP3 on a Windows Server 2012 server in order to migrate our existing Exchange 2003 server. Everything went well with the installation process until I went to add the Mailbox server role, which is giving

I found I could fix this by removing the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Microsoft-Exchange-Troubleshooters/Operational
and everything underneath it.
My guess is that wevtutil didn't like adding an event log where it already existed but was slightly different in setup (no idea how, exactly).
After 24 hours I'll try post again - giving things time to make sure they are actually working. -
Use Different mailbox or same mailbox if setup two accepted domains in one Exchange Server 2010
Hi,
I want to know if I setup two accepted domain in one Exchange Server 2010, will it have another mailbox or use same mailbox?Hi,
Based on my knowledge, to add a new name in the accepted domain list is to add a SMTP address suffix for the mailboxes. Thus, it uses the same mailbox if you setup two accepted domain in one Exchange Server 2010.
If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.
Thanks,

Recover mailbox from Exchange server 2010 information store to exchange server 2013
I have a big issue. I have a correct exchange server 2010 where the active directory is corrupt but the information store is good.
I would like to recover a couple of mailboxes to an exchange server 2013.
Can anyone give me a detailed walk through of how I can accomplish this?
Thank in advanceWell if your AD is messed up that leaves you in a jam for sure because;
1. Database portability ONLY works within the same organization, so you cannot just install a new 2010 server in a completely different forest and then move the DB in hopes that DB portability will work.
2. As Ed said you should build a new Exchange 2010 server and use portability but it has to be in the same organization.
3. Here is a good article on how to accomplish
http://exchangeserverpro.com/exchange-2010-database-portability-disaster-recovery/
4. Now if you by chance have an AD backup before it went south you could build a separate network with same names etc just keep it isolated from the production server and then restore AD to that environment and you could then use DB portability.
That said if you don't have any other machines to work with then you are in a bit of a pickle and will have to use a 3rd party product to get to that data within the 2010 DB. We make a product that can do this (DigiScope), however if you don't
have any budget to handle its a non-issue.
The only other thing you could consider is to restore your AD from a previous point in time, however BE VERY CAREFUL if you consider this since it could cause more issues then you have now.
BTW if you AD is messed up, where are you putting this new 2013 server?
Search, Recover, & Extract Mailboxes, Folders, & Email Items from Offline Exchange Mailbox and Public Folder EDB's and Live Exchange Servers or Import/Migrate direct from Offline EDB to Any Production Exchange Server, even cross version i.e. 2003 -->
2007 --> 2010 --> 2013 with Lucid8's

Exchange 2010 Mailbox automapping issues after updated to Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2010 SP3
Hi,
i have problem with Outlook Uses who have Full Access on other mailbox.
An authentication window pop up very time a user start Outlook.
If i remove the access everything is ok.
if i insert manual the mailbox everything is ok
The System was for 3 days ago updated to Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2010 SP3
Before the update, was no issue.
i will appreciated any help
ThanksSame issue here. Ever since we installed Update Rollup 5 for SP3 Exchange 2010 mailboxes that were auto mapped are not accessible. They all get the same error.
Cannot expand the folder. The set of folders cannot be opened. The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange has failed.
What I have been doing is removing the users permission, then adding them back using the noautomap switch in Powershell. After doing that, the user manually adds the mailbox and all is well.
Just a note here, I suspect it may have something to do with the version of Outlook 2010. We are running an older version here. I think only SP1 with no other incremental updates. Office is up to SP2. Also, one of the users I was working with could not access
the mailbox no matter what we tried but she can walk over to another workstation and open Outlook and access the very same mailbox so that pretty much proves its software related particularly with Outlook.
I cannot reproduce the problem on a workstation (XP) with a newer version of Outlook.
This has been wearing me out and I suspected the Update Rollup all long. Now I am confident as others are having the same problem. If you find out anything on how to fix this other than the steps above, let me know. -

All sub-folders in Mac Mail cannot synchronize with Exchange Server 2010
Hi all,
All sub-folders under Inbox in Mac Mail cannot be synchronized with Exchange Server 2010. There are 2GB messages size in Inbox folder and 500MB messages size under Inbox's sub-folders. All messages can be sent out and received and it can work in Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010 normally. However, all messages in sub-folders cannot be synchronized (empty sub-folders).
Does this problem relate to message synchronization order of Mac Mail with Exchange Server? Do all sub-folders messages be synchronized after synchronization complete of Inbox? The synchronization of sub-folders will not happen if the synchronization of Inbox does not complete, doesn't it?
All messages synchronization is over internet. Can anybody help?
Thanks a lot
DT1640759Hi,
1.please check the mailbox send and receive quota for exchange 2013 migrated mailbox.
2.Please check the email attributes of the exchange 2013 migrated mailbox because it seems to be a problem with that particular mailbox.
3.Then do the message tracking and that would be the only way to find the where the send messages has gone.
4.Please check and confirm you have an enough space on the disk where exchange queue database is residing.
I think I need to create a receive connector in the 2013 to receive from 2010 ?
No need ,by design exchange 2013 cas server default frontend receive connector will be having an
entire ipv4 and ipv6 segment and anonymous connection is checked by default.
I think I also need to create a send and receive connector for 2013 users to each other?
No need , an intra organisation send connector and the default receive connectors in exchange will be used
for internal mail flow between the exchange 2013 users.
Please reply me if you have any queries .

Send As, Send on Behalf and Full Access for Exchange server 2010/2013
[This FAQ contains 2 parts]
Testing and watching the behavior of Send As, Send On Behalf and Full Access permission.
Common issue and Troubleshooting on the three permission.
[Testing and Watching]
Based on following blog, I decide to test on my lab:
Full Mailbox Access Rights + Send On Behalf = Send As ?
http://blogs.technet.com/b/ehlro/archive/2012/04/06/full-mailbox-access-rights-send-on-behalf-send-as.aspx
Description on my lab and test:
Exchange 2010 + Outlook 2010
Exchange 2013 + Outlook 2013
Senders: A01, A02, … , A07, A08
Recipient: A09
A01 grand permission to other senders.
Two methods:
a. Use A0x’s credential configure A01’s profile, then send From both A01 and A0x via Outlook. Watching result in A09’s Inbox and Sent Items which has message copy left.
b. Use A0x’s credential configure A0x’s profile, then send From both A01 and A0x via Outlook. Watching result in A09’s Inbox and Sent Items which has message copy left.
Result as following forms:
1. Exchange 2010 + Outlook 2010 / Exchange 2013 + Outlook 2013
Using A0x’s credential configure A01’s mailbox, then send From both A01 and A0x
To A09.
2. Exchange 2010 + Outlook 2010 / Exchange 2013 + Outlook 2013
Using A0x’s credential configure A0x’s mailbox, then send From both A01 and A0x
To A09.
[Common Issue]
1. [Issue]
Exchange 2010 + Outlook 2010. A01 grand A03 Send As permission. However A03 can’t send as A01 to A09 and get NDR:
You can’t send a message on behalf of this user unless you have permission to do so. Please make sure you’re sending on behalf of the correct sender, or request the necessary permission. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk.
Details as following pic:
[Troubleshooting]
1) Based on the NDR, it seems a permission issue. Check Send As permission, however the Send As permission configured correctly. Pic as below:
2) ince the Send As permission configured correctly, it seems the permission hasn’t been replicated. Try to restart Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. It works.
Note: The Send As permission isn’t granted until after replication has occurred. Replication times depend on your Exchange and network configuration. To grant the permission immediately, stop and then restart the Microsoft Exchange Information
Store service.
2. [Issue]
Exchange 2013 + Outlook 2013. A01 grand A03 Send As permission. However A03 can’t send as A01 to A09 and get NDR:

1) Also check the Send As permission configuration first.
2) Then try to use A03 send as A01 to A09 via OWA. If OWA works well, it seems and issue on the Outlook client side.
3) This behavior may occur if the OAB in Outlook isn’t updated. Try to download OAB manually.
4) If doesn’t work, please close Outlook and try to delete all the OAB folder on your computer. The path of OAB folder in Win7, Win8 as below:
\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Offline Address Books
5) Restart Outlook.
Note: Be aware that you cannot send e-mail messages on behalf of a mailbox if the mailbox is hidden from address list. When sending a message, Exchange requires that e-mail address is resolved in the
From field.
3. [Issue]
Exchange 2010. A01 grant A0x “Send As” or “Send on Behalf” permission. A0x send as/ send on behalf of A01. The message is only copied to the Sent Items folder in A0x’s mailbox (same as the result of my test). Also cannot configure Exchange 2010 so that the
message is copied to the Sent Items folder of both A01 and A0x.
[Troubleshooting]
This issue occurs because Exchange server 2010 was designed to copy message to the Sent Items folder of the sender only. This issue can be solved by installing Exchange 2010 SP2 UR4. More details in the following KB:
Messages that are sent by using the "Send As" and "Send on behalf" permissions are copied only to the Sent Items folder of the sender in an Exchange Server 2010 environment

Few things you might want to add is the type of connectivity (Cached vs Online will produce different results) and to expand further on the methods of adding the other mailbox in Outlook (additional mailbox
vs additional account defaults to different methods). Check the screenshot:

Exchange Server 2010: Incoming mail not delivered
I have an Exchange Server 2010 Standard with all recent patches and updates.
-It has been in service for 3 years without any issues.
-There is plenty of hard drive space for the logs and the data (over 100GB in each)
-The current size of the mail database is 150GB
-There is no registry entry in place limiting the size of the database ([url="http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232092.aspx"]Database Size Limit in GB as outlined here[/url]
Starting a few days ago, incoming mail is reaching the server but not being delivered to user mailboxes. Internal mail works fine when this happens. Looking at the Queue Viewer doesn't show anything abnormal. The Submission Queue shows nothing.
It is only after I reboot the Exchange Server that the Submission queue will show all the messages waiting to be delivered and they will all be delivered successfully after the reboot. The event logs do not show any error messages.
The server will continue to run fine for a few hours and then the problem starts all over again.
What could be causing this?Any 3rd party antivirus/anti-spam software installed on the server? If so, disable and test.

Exchange Server 2010 Backup and Restore
Hai,
I have Exchange server 2010 stand alone server combined with mailbox, hub and cas role. i dont have backup application program. I want to take my exchange database backup to my SAN storage automatically everyday...
Using windows server backup i can take full backup only and i can schedule it to happen daily.. Is it possible can i take incremental backup??????????for exchange 2010 database.
Thanks Chandru CT. MCITPYou have two basic options to backup Exchange 2010, VSS snapshots and "native backup" (meaning a Lag copy). As far as VSS backups go, there are three components; the VSS Writer, the VSS Provider, and the VSS Requestor. The Writer is built into
Exchange. In fact in Exchange 2010 there are two - the Exchange VSS Writer and the Exchange VSS Replica Writer. The provider can be a software VSS provider such as the Microsoft Shadow Copy provider or a hardware provider (usually supplied by your
SAN vendor. The requestor is what you would tend to think of as the backup application; it coordinates activities between the Writer and the Provider.
As far as the Exchange 2010 plugin for Windows backup goes, it a very minimal requestor. It only supports the Exchange 2010 VSS Writer, not the Replica Writer. This means you can only take backups of the Active copy of a database. The requirement
to backup the entire "volume" in the windows sense, or partition to the rest of us is a function of the way VSS works and is no real surprise. In fact, another limitation of VSS is that the logs and database need to be on seperate volumes: see
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee832794.aspx.
That it only takes full backups makes sense as well. Shadow copies, like many software providers and many hardware providers out there are copy on write. Initially, after the first one that is, they take up minimal space for some metadata.
As data is writen to the volume while the the snapshot is in place, the original blocks are evacuated to a "difference area" and the write is then written to the newly evacul\ated spot. You can generally put the difference area on the same volume or
somewhere else. The downside is to write a block while a copy on write snapshot is in place means a read and two writes for every write. This gets ugly on RAID 5 which already has a write penalty of 4; that turns into 9 IOs for every write while
the copy on write snapshot is in place. Since you can't do the snapshots on the replica because the replica writer isn't supported, that IO hit is on the active copy. When using copy on write snapshots, you generally want as few around as possible
for as short a time as possible; usually just long enough to export or copy the snapshot to another set of spindles. I really wouldn't want to use WSB plugin for Exchange 2010 in anything but the smallest deployments.
What about native backup? Well then you take a 100% space hit for every lag copy. In addition, restoring a LAG is a one shot deal. As you strive with the LAG to match what you could achieve with even daily or weekly copy on write snapshots,
the number of database copies, and Exchange mailbox servers, poliferates. You may want to consider a "Happy medium" that combines a LAG for fault tolerance/protection against logical corruption with copy on write snapshots (replicated or copied
to seperate storage) for HA. Perhaps DPM would be worth a look in your situation.
You did mention that you have a SAN. Most SAN vendors offer hardware VSS Providers. Many are copy on write, and you shift that set of problems to the, albeit likey a bit more performant SAN, Some vendors use other stratagies. The vendor
I work for uses allocate on write, so it avoids the 3 IOs per write copy on write penalty while a snapshot is in place. This means you can snapshot frequently and keep many of them around without penalty shortening your RPO and RTO. They optionally
archive truncated logs allowing for "up to the minute" restore of older snapshots, not just the last one. They also provide a proprietery version of RAID 6, called RAID DP that outperforms RAID 1. Combine that with all the storage efficiency features
like dedupe of primary storage, thin provisioning, compression, etc., that can all be combined and it starts to get compelling as the size of your deployment increases. Although I might be a bit biased when it comes to SAN vendors, if your SAN is someone
other than NetApp I still encourage you to talk with your SAN vendor and see what features/functionality they offer that can help you address your backup needs for Exchange 2010. I think you'll find much to like; it really comes down to scale and a cost/benefit
analysis.
If you decide that hardware VSS providers are not you thing and want to stay with a software vss provider, I encorage you to talk to the usual backup software vendors as well. Many can integrate with DAS and/or SAN, and have their own software
VSS providers often including support for the Exchange 2010 replica writer. This at a minimum allows you to snapshot passive copies. Features like replication (to get the changed blocks to other storage or off site), tape support (to roll backups
off to tape potentially to store off site) and catalogs come to mind as very useful things to have.
I'd take a look around at what's available and see if any of the things offered meet your business needs at a price you can afford to pay. The WSB Plug-in is a bare bones sort of thing, and it only gets better from there.
