Finder is really slow ( 15 sec.) after mavericks update on brand new iMac 27" WITH fusion drive...

When looking up files it's fine, but when trying to save or open anything through ANY program, i.e. Adobe CS6 programs, Microsoft Word, but also Apple software, finder is really slow (15 sec. or more of the same spinning beach ball) after the OSX Mavericks update on my brand new iMac 27" WITH fusion drive... This ***** really bad because it totally disturbs the smooth workflow I bought the iMac for in the first place...
Any suggestions?
Already tried 'clearing the plist file' through terminal; didn't work... Rebooting (obviously), didn't work.
Will there be a fix soon?
It's costing me way to much time waiting for the finder to show it's content when working.
Any official word from Apple on this?

I had a similar problem.  Tried repairing disk permissions, tried cleaning up with onyx and applejack with no luck.  Finally what did work was simply starting up in safe mode (hold shift key down after restart) and it sorted itself out
Hope this works for you

  • Mavericks update on brand new MacMini, HDMI went blurry!

I just bought a Mac Mini.  I wanted to upgrade it.  I plugged it into my Samsung HDMI/DVI/VGA 23" monitor.
On Mountain Lion, picture was awesome.  After the 9 hour upgrade process yesterday, the picture went crappy.
I'd like someone to explain to me how my brand new MacMini worked flawlessly before the upgrade to Mavericks?
I now have to drag the underscan slider half way across, and the text is blurry! It's like I stepped back in time 10 years.  How is that possible?  Can someone explain why?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Disk Utility slow to open after Mavericks update

Installed Mavericks 10.9 in 4 laptops and the June-2012 15" MacBook Pro (Crucial M4 SSD) is having issues with Disk Utility opening.  Normally opening DU is instant but after the Mavericks upgrade I get a spinning beach ball for maybe 10-15 seconds then it opens.....this doesn't happen every time I open DU but for sure after every startup or reboot.
    Thing I've tested are:
    Startup in SAFE mode.....same issue.
    Created a test account....same issue.
I've repaired permission and ran disk repair multiple time and no issues noted.
I also disabled Dropbox and 1Password from starting at boot......this helped with Finder being slow, but not DU.
    Any ideas
    The other laptops are fine:
    2009 15" MacBook Pro (Crucial M4 SSD)
    2011 13" MacBook Air
    2011 11" MacBook Air
    Any suggestions?

Still seeing the same problems with DU.  I really would like to here from others with this issue and if they found a fix.
I did take my MBP to Apple store for diagonsis but thye found NO hardware problems what so ever.  They suggested to do a fresh install......which I have done with no fix (twice).
I have a 2009 MBP that has NO issues with DU.
There's got to be a reason software or hardware and it seam that I have ruled them both out.

  • Macbook pro very slow few weeks after Mavericks update

    Hi,

  • Can't use iPhoto after newest update on brand new computer!?

I just bought my macbook white yesterday. Installed all of the newest updates (14) and everything works except iPhoto. The first time I clicked on iPhoto, this is what I saw:
    _1st error_:
*The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.*
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library.
+However, _nothing happens_ when I click on upgrade! It pops to this:+
    _2nd error_:
    *The application iPhoto quit unexpectedly.*
Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.
Click Relaunch to launch the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
    Please help!

    Hi TD -
Thanks for the pointers. I'm totally new to macs, so still learning!
I did 1 & 2, and then created a new account. iPhoto works in the new account, so I guess it is a problem in the main account...but I don't know what to do from here.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated to try to solve this issue. Thanks!
edit: *actually, I think I just solved it.*
    Based on this disscussion:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2029584&tstart=0
    Steps taken:
    1. hold down the ALT (option) key
    2. click icon to open iPhoto
    3. choose the default library (note: it was the only library listed, and I didn't have anything in my library b/c I'd never launched iPhoto before). +*Didn't have to rebuild anything.*+
Result? It immediately loaded and seems to work fine now!
    Thanks!

  • My 2009 iMac died 1 day after i purchased a brand new iMac

Fortunately I bought a Time Capsule the same day and peformed a successful backup.  Apparently the video card went and Apple said it would cost ~$500 to replace since it is integrated into the system board.  I have a 19 inch monitor i got for free - and was trying to explain to my 11 year old that I would buy him a macbook that he could use with the external monitor.  I did a demo using my 8 year old's Dell laptop running Windows 7 and my 11 year old started crying at the idea because he thought he'd have to use Windows!  I had to change the background image on the dell to Mac screen to convince him it would be ok.

Sucks, but it is in the contract you signed. Within 14 days, return the phone and get a new one, after 14 days, it is a used phone and gets replaced with a used phone. I had this happen to me, felt a bit cheated, but you know what, that phone lasted the entire rest of the contract without issues and continued to work when I passed it on to family.
The only alternative would be to work directly with HTC, the manufacturer of the phone and try to get a new replacement. However, almost every company does exactly what Verizon does in this situation. Since Verizon is keeping to the terms of the agreement you both agreed to, the BBB will not see any problem and not have any reason to act.

  • Brand new Imac and wireless is saying no hardware installed? really confused as it was working fine yesterday, brand new Imac and wireless is saying no hardware installed? really confused as it was working fine yesterday

Hi Guys, I juts bought a new Imac and jad it connected to my wireless router yesterday but now when i click on the wireless button on the top screen, it comes up saing wireless hardware not installed, have any of you had this problem? Thanks Tracey

You can quickly see if there is a problem in reporting the AirPort card by going to the apple in the upper left corner, About This Mac, More Info, System report and look at the information on Hardware and the AirPort report...make sure it is not indicating a fault.
If all looks ok, try removing the network information and reentering it and see if the AirPort responds.

  • I Photo will not update after migrating from old I-Mac to new I-Mac with fusion drive

I just migrated from 2009 I-Mac with Mountain Lion to New I-Mac with Mountain Lion with migration Assistant. Now... I tunes will not update although Apple says one is available

a couple of things - you should not "migrate" applications - you should use the new ones that come preinstalled - what version of of iPhoto do you have on your new mac?
Migration assistance does not handle the iPhoto library well sometimes - the best way is to drag the bad iphoto library from the pictures folder on the new system to the desktop, connect the two systems together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto on the new system - it will open and convert the iPhoto library as necessary and you will be fine - once you test the iPhoto library you can delete the one on the desktop

  • After starting up a brand new 10.8.2 iMac it linked to an older iMac, 15 hrs later I have a duplicate screen of 10.6.8; how to get rid of all that down load and free up the new iMac?

After starting up a brand new imac it down loaded off an older 10.6.8 running imac for 15 hiurs, now I have a duplicate of the older; how to dump all the older stuff and get my new imac?

OK. Log into your migrated account. Open Users & Groups preferences, click on the lock icon and authenticate.
Click on the Add [-] button and create a new account. Make it an Administrative account and name it whatever you want (but not the same as your current account) and set it up to login automatically. Log out of your current account and log into the new account. Now, select your migrated account and click on the Delete [-] button to remove it. Select the bottom option to delete immediately. DO NOT select the option to erase securely.
Now, you can choose to migrate again from your old account but be more selective of what you migrate or you can simply copy over the data you want.

My Mac has gone really slow since upgrading to Mavericks. Any suggestions as to how to speed things up again?

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Might be Finder preferences are corrupted ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash
If that doesn't help, relaunch the Finder >  Relaunch Finder… from the Mac OS X Finder

Weird stuff after Mavericks update.  Internet connection is fine, Chrome works perfect.
Safari attempts to open webpage, but shows 6-9 white boxes surrounded by green border in the upper left hand corner of the page.  The webpage will show up, then safari crashes.  If I disable Javascript, then smaller boxes show up, but safari is usable.
