Help with Library

Hello,
I am not very computer smart, and I have absolutely no idea how to handle the problem I have with my iTunes library. I store my library on an external hard drive, but I don't know if that's relevant to my question. I tried to open iTunes, the external hard drive was on, and a window popped up saying it couldn't find my library or something. I was confused and I tried to find the library on the external hard drive. I found various versions of my library from over the years, but none of them are the most recent. There's one from mid October, which is the most recent one I could find. But I have no idea if that is the most recent. The file's name from mid october of this year, but the size of the file is too small. Where as the library dated from 2006, which should be really small, is really big. And there's no way I can tell which songs are missing from the "recent" library. I don't know if I should sync the iPod or what I should do.
Thanks for your time.

Hi, Emily,
I don't have all the answers for you, but I can wager a guess on a few things.
I would recommend NOT syncing your iPod right now. You'll probably lose all the new stuff and be reverted to whatever previous version of your library is on iTunes. I know someone who this happened to once.
Unfortunately, without seeing the specifics, it's hard to tell what exactly you tried, but it sounds like you tried all the right things (i.e. looking at the various folders on your external hard drive).
Is there a way to look at the folders and see which songs, specifically, are in each one? Maybe you can download them from your external drive to the computer's own drive until you reassemble all of your collection.
Beyond that, maybe someone else can give advice on this forum, or otherwise you'll have to call Apple's helpdesk. (I wish we could just e-mail Apple support.) I hope this helped at least a little bit.

  • Help with Library Items

How do I change the titles of a couple of pages, eg "Biography" to "About"  and how do I delete some pages?

This question really has nothing to do with Library items.  And for benefit of those not following other threads, the link to the pages is here -
    http://www.bbcooper.com/film_tv.html
So - what do you want to cover in this thread: titles, deleting other pages, or Library items?  How about we start with my first suggestion to you in the previous thread -
In DW's Code view for the film_tv.html page, change this -
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
Save the page.  Make a similar change in any other page in your site containing that XML prolog
    ("<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>"), i.e., delete it.
Now, to get on with the Library items, in your local site, you will find a file called "main_nav.lbi" in the Library items folder.  Open it in DW. Again, in Code view, delete all of this -
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"> <!-- function MM_swapImgRestore() { //v3.0 var i,x,a=document.MM_sr; for(i=0;a&&i<a.length&&(x=a[i])&&x.oSrc;i++) x.src=x.oSrc; }  function MM_preloadImages() { //v3.0 var d=document; if(d.images){ if(!d.MM_p) d.MM_p=new Array(); var i,j=d.MM_p.length,a=MM_preloadImages.arguments; for(i=0; i<a.length; i++) if (a[i].indexOf("#")!=0){ d.MM_p[j]=new Image; d.MM_p[j++].src=a[i];}} }

  • Help with Library link lists ..

    Hi ,
I am working with Scott Mazur on a incorporating 8.1.7 in our code bace for our next product release. I am having problems with defining the library link list needed for builds. In the documentation it makes referance to $ORACLE_HOME/precomp/demo/proc which I cannot find. I have installed the 8.1.7 on 3 platforms (Solaris, AIX and NT ) and none of the system have this information. Can you please point me to where I may find some help in this area. We are in a critical path right now so I would appreciate any help you could give me. The sooner the better.
Thank you for your time and help ,

You actually shouldn't try to get the library link lists directly. Rather, you should use the $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/demo/demo_rdbms.mk makefile like this:
    make -f $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/demo/demo_rdbms.mk build EXE=yourexecutable OBJS="object list"
where yourexecutable is the name for your executable and the OBJS= includes a quoted list of all your object and library files.

  • New to itunes and need help with library please

some of my albums have various artists. i cant get them to show up as 1 album it shows as an album for every song. can anyone help me please?
another problem i am having is my album artwork does not show up when I insert a cd to rip. I am also having trouble with the itunes suddenly getting all garbled up so i cant even see the screen untill I close itunes and open it back up. grrrr!! i sold my Zune to get this ipod touch and am wondering if I have made a mistake.
thanks for any help you can give me
    Carri

according to you we are on the same page here. When you rip a regular cd into itunes, it does not have the album artwork engrained into the song file. This is just an example, Say you ripped a Metallica cd into itunes such as "Master of Puppets." The song on the album "Disposable Heroes" will not have the album artwork with it.
You need to get an apple account, just go to the itunes store and sign up. After you do that you can click on one of the songs from the album you ripped. Right click it, and go to the choice "get album artwork". itunes will automatically modify the artwork for all the songs on that album. That is it. I may have a post later on your other problems. Ask me if you don't fully understand what i said.

  • Help with library files..

I launch itunes with the option button and created a new library on an external drive. It created a folder call itunes with the database, xml, games music folder on it.
Is there a way to have the library and playlist on my main drive with the music folder on the external drive?
I ask this as, sometime when i boot it says it couldnt find my itunes library and i must manually select the library on the external drive.
Also, i have a dj application that looks for the itunes library in my home/music folder.
    Thanks

Then you'll have to recreate your library. Set iTunes back to the internal folder location, delete all the tracks listed (if any) in iTunes, then use the Add To Library command and select the folder on your external drive that contains your music. That should get all the tracks back into iTunes, have the library files on the internal drive, and the music on the external.
You'll need to recreate your playlists and will (I believe) lose all your ratings, but to the best of my knowledge it's going to be your only option. Perhaps someone else here might know a trick to rebuild your playlists without having to do them all from scratch.

  • Help with library/ Ipod glitch

Ok first, my computer was broken for a while so i had my cousin put all his songs on my ipod. So i fixed my computer and installed itunes. When i plugged in my ipod i tried to put the songs on my library but i can't find a way.
Second: after i gave up trying to do this i ejected my ipod to listen to it and when i put a certain song on, it skips it and a couple more stops, plays one song, skips more and so on.I tried restarting multple times but it didn't work.
    HELP!!!!

I can answer your first question. This is from the Apple FAQ:
"Synchronization occurs only in one direction, from your computer to your iPod. This means you cannot transfer music, automatically or manually, from your iPod to a computer, and you cannot use iPod to copy a music library from one computer to another."
This restriction was designed to discourage casual music piracy, but unfortunately, this also prevents one from copying legally acquired music from one's own iPod to their own computer. Apple officially states that "there's no way to use the Finder or My Computer to copy the songs from your iPod to reconstitute the library on your computer.
However, if you need to restore a music collection lost due to a system crash or want to transfer thousands of songs to a new computer rather than again "rip" hundreds of CDs or repurchase music through iTunes, you will need to use third-party software. For MacOS X, try Broken Helix and Rob's iPod Exporter. For MacOS 9, try escapePod and iProber. For Windows XP, try SharePod. For Linux, try GUIPod. All of these quick and easy-to-use programs are freeware."
Your second problem almost sounds as if you are shuffling the songs(?) Does it only happen when you put on the same song, initially?

  • Help with Library Management - duplicate files, single develop settings.

I use Lightroom 5 and local disk as my supposed master.
I use GoodSync and an external drive as my backup.
    When I am traveling I use my Macbook and the external drive - and this has caused the following problem;
Instead of just being a backup, my external drive is now a folder in Lightroom.
The develop settings are associated with the files on that drive and I have duplicates through the synchronisation process that I run with Goodsync.
Can I move the develop settings (All, Automagically) back to the files located on my local drive and remove the folder from Lightroom?
I will manage my backup process differently.
Or .. do I create a new catalog and import the files from ... the external drive first? Or the local?
Possibly external to ensure I don't lose any settings?
Any advice, especially if someone else has found themselves in this predicament, would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you

When using a Finder specifier you also need to include the startup disk.  There are a few different domains that the path to command will work with.  If you don't specify a domain, such as your first example, the assumption is that you want the user domain.  The /Library/Preferences folder is in the local domain so you can use the following command to get its path:
path to preferences folder from local domain

  • Help with library v

hey can anyone tell me if you can set up the view of the library by Artist --> Album --> Track Number. ie i got a crapload of music by same artists like Aerosmith, so I'd like to set it up so it is ordered first by Artist name, then have all of the artists' albums in alphabetical order then the tracks in numeric order. in windows media player, i would just click on the tabs (Artist / Album / Track Number) and it'd be all set up nice and organized. If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.
    PS i have Creative MediaSource

Creative offer appalling software here, you can do it but you need to do it manually and if you have a lot of music it takes hours. Go to the library and drag the songs in the order you want them. You cannot change the playlist order though only the songs within each playlist.

  • Help with Library Backup files

Hi,  I'm trying to get some of the clutter off my HD, so I got OmniDiskSweeper.  One thing I found, in my User->Library->Application Support folder, my MobileSync folder is 3.6 GB, and if I go into Backup, the Backup Library folder is 8 GB.
Can I delete some of these flies in these folders?  I'm not even sure what MobileSync is, I thought my iPhone synced through iTunes.  Then in the Backup folder, some of these backups go back to 2009 (I'm thinking if I could delete these, then just do a Full Disk backup right away).
If I can delete files, what is the best way to do it?  (I know sometimes just going into the folder and moving to the trash can cause problems, as the app search for the file.
    Thanks for help

Here's another file size question: in my HD folder, I found a hidden folder marked "private".  In it is a folder that says "var" and inside it is a folder named "vm" that is 6.2 GB, and contains a whole bunch of files named "swapfile1" (1-26) each of which is 256 mb.  What is this for and can it be deleted?
    thanks again for help

  • Need help with library....Itunes not finding music !

I was going through folders on my hard drive, not using Itunes. I was looking at each of the album folders when I noticed that many artists had duplicate tracks, but the track name had a 1 added to the titles. I spent hours deleting thousands of duplicate songs. I have no idea how that happened, but it's finished & I have more drive space.
I then noticed a bunch of artists were for some reason, filed under compilations and not where they belonged. I copied the folders from compilations and put them in the proper artists folder. Now itunes isn't finding them, yet they are there on the drive.
Question: Is there anyway to have itunes go through my library completely to rebuild what it needs to find all of the moved songs? Thanks!

I'm sorry to say I have the same problem...sort of..I want to know if there is a fast way to transfer music from my music library to itunes...since I accidentally deleted the entire iT library...I wanted to post my question so I signed up here, but can you tell me WHERE in this place do I GO to POST??? how frustrating, I cant find where to post so I had to BUD in somewhere, and hope you have that answer..I'm sorry!!

  • I'm moving to college soon, and would appreciate some help with my library.

I am moving to college in just over a week and a half and was needing some help with my iTunes library. Currently, at home, I use iTunes as my main source of music entertainment. I purchase music through the iTues Store and upload older music from CDs onto the library as well. I have made several smart playlists based off of information such as play counts and last played dates. Unfortunately, this is all on a desktop that I will be unable to bring with me to school. So I have recently purchased a laptop that I will be taking with me to school. I have already downloaded iTunes and have activated the laptop to my Apple ID. The desktop currently runs on Windows 7, while the laptop runs on Windows 8. Both are up-to-date with iTunes.
With all of that background information, here comes my question. Is there a way to have the same library on both PCs? I don't just mean the same songs, but rather have the same play counts, last played dates, playlists, etc. on both computers. Is this something that can be accomplished through the cloud or iTunes Match?

Copy the ENTIRE /Music/iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.
Sync only with the new computer going forward.
Nothing will be updated on the old computer, but if you are not going to be at home using the desktop is that really relevant?

  • Please help with backing up library

OK, this has maybe been addressed before but I'm new here and haven't really found an answer on the forums... My work is saved as monthly projects and I want to export them to an external HD with metadata and adjustments etc but retain a referenced version in my library on my mac. Make sense? If I need to get anything back I can do a quick search and plug in the HD - yes? Trouble is if I export the project as-is I can't reimport referenced files... This is maybe my poor working practice and I'd really appreciate some help with it. I've previously just exported versions then burned DVD's but I'd really like to keep a record of pics on the mac if poss. HELP PLEASE!

Thanks so much for your help with this! It sounds exactly like what I want to achieve. I'm wondering now if I can export my entire library and bring it back in as referenced instead of managed - hopefully someone can advise? Thanks, Craig
You don't need to export you can do it from within Aperture, see *File->Relocate Master*.
Again check out the user manual Apple did a real good job with this one.
And PLEASE, PLEASE, make a complete backup of your Aperture library before trying any of this we are not responsible for lost, missing or mutilated photos

How do I reset this if I cant log in? When I try to press online the same thing pops up and I have no way of logging in or asking for help.

    Hi,
iChat (it would help to know which version) can accept Apple IDs as valid AIM Screen Names.
However if you have iChat 5 or earlier you cannot use ones ending in @me.com or @icloud.com issued by iCloud. (they can be used in iChat 6 or Messages as these versions make a double login to AIM and Apple to allow the use of the password).
In addition if you are using an Apple ID for an AIM Screen Name the password still needs to keep to the 16 character limit that AIM has.
AN @mac.com name can be used on any version of iChat  (Until the 30th June 2014)
As it does not need a double check with Apple you can use it to log in to the AIM Web pages
Login here with an AIM Name registered at AIM or and @mac.com name and see if you get any suspended account messages.
Sometimes account can be suspended. Usually because something has triggered the "Unusual Activity" item.
About a year ago many @mac.com users that travelled out of their own country found themselves suspended when they got home.
If the Name checks out of if an Apple ID the password in known to be 16 characters or Less then do this:-
In Lion upwards open a Finder Window and use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key.
Select the Library that appears in the menu list.
    Navigate to Preferences.
(If you have version earlier than Lion the just navigate to ~/Library/Preferences (that's the Library in you Home - Little House icon - folder)
Fnd com.apple.ichat.aim.plist (even if you are using Messages)
Drag the file to the Trash and Restart the app.

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.
