I have an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1. I just want to get to 4.3 or higher because a game I like now requires it. I'd be happy with iOS 4.3... but 6 will do too. When I connect my iPhone to iTunes, the Update button reads "A newer version of the iPhone software is available (v 6.0)" so one owuld assume that the Update button would get me iOS 6. But when I click on the Update button, it gives me an error message telling me that my version of iTunes (10.6) is current. Thanks for the reply... but ugh, this is snow-balling out of control: Just to play a game that requires iOS 4.3, I have to upgrade iTunes, but to upgrade iTunes to 10.7.0.21, we need to upgrade the Mac OS from 10.5 to 10.6.8, which seems to cost $30. If I'm going to spend $30, I wish I could be giving the money to the game developers instead of to buying/getting 2 new OSes that I otherwise didn't need. So does anyone else have any other ways to get my iPhone up to iOS 4.3 (or higher) without all these steps and money?

edit the hosts file on your computer and remove any lines that contain gs.apple.com. Disable your antivirus and firewall.

You might try reading the entire help document you linked from:

Check the hosts file. The restore will fail if there is an active entry to redirect gs.apple.com. FollowiTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting to edit the hosts file or revert to a default hosts file. See section "Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows) > Rebuild network information".
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

I'm trying to update my iPhone 4 from iOS 5.1.1 to 6.1. When I try to do this using iTunes on my MacBook Pro (OS X v 10.5.8), with my iPhone in its cradle, clicking the "Update" button in Tunes gets a message saying "This version of iTunes (10.6.1) is the current version." I can't get the iOS update to download.
When I try to update to the iPhone directly, I get a message saying "iOS 6.0.1 failed verification because you are no longer connected to the Internet" at the Verifying Update step. I noticed that this message refers to iOS 6.0.1, even though I want to update to 6.1. It is possible that, a few weeks ago, I may have downloaded but not installed v 6.0.1.
