HT1515 do you need to connect the airport express to a router via ethernet or can it do it using wireless?

do you need to connect the airport express to a router via ethernet or can it do it using wireless?

There are 3 Apple routers....AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule. Details here:
http://www.apple.com/compare-wifi-models/
Do you have one of these products in the living room?
If no, you can only use the AirPort Express by connecting to the router in the living room using an Ethernet cable at all times.

I am trying to connect my airport express to extend the range of my network to a bedroom that is hard wired for internet. What type of cord/cords do I need to do that?

You can connect the AirPort Express to the wall port in the bedroom for the setup.....but first....if you have not already done so.....it would be a great idea to make sure that the connection in the bedroom is working correctly.
To do that, turn off the wireless on a laptop and connect the laptop directly to the wall port in the bedroom using an Ethernet cable. Make sure that the laptop can get a good Internet connection that way.  If it can, this tells you that the cabling is working correctly, so the Express will work well when you connect it up.
If you don't have a laptop with an Ethernet port, then we'll have to assume that the folks that pulled the cables and installed the jacks tested things as part of the installation.
When you are ready to install the Express, you can use an iPhone or iPad if you have one handy for the setup.

  • Why would you need to connect an AirPort Express to a printer to print wirelessly when you could just use AirPrint?

What is the point of connecting an AirPort Express to a printer when you could just use AirPrint from an iPhone?

All you guys are mistaking the Airprint system. Wireless printing is a Misnomer. Nothing prints wirelessly. Both the printer and the computer, or i or android device have to be all connected to the same LAN. They can be connected by a wire or a WiFi signal but they all must be on the same LAN.
Airprint is a Driverless printing system where No Specific Printer drivers have to be installed on the computer or other device. Even with the Airprint system both the printer and the device you are printing from have to be on the same LAN.

Before I bought it I did the same question at the Apple Store, and they told me "You can extend your existing Wi-Fi Signal with Airport Express wireless...
You cannot extend wireless from any brand except another apple router.. the store might have assumed you were using an apple main router. Most people who buy express buy them to extend an extreme or time capsule.
You are correct .. in the setup documents it does say 5.6.1 is adequate to do the setup.. my bad.. !!

Do I need to connect the AirPort Extreme with a ethnet cable

    Hi Tracy,
I have an airport express connected by ethernet cable to a Netgear modem which is connected to a phone socket. Those devices stay at one end of the house. I can use my MacBook Pro to connect to the internet (by Wi-Fi, no cables) anywhere else in the house.  I hope this helps.

  • Can I connect the Airport Express to a TV and watch the screen of my Mac on the TV?

Could I know if I can connect the Airport Express to the TV and watch the screen of my Mac or iPad or iPhone... On the TV?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's not possible with an AirPort Express. However, what you can do is to use an Apple TV if you want to mirror your iPhone, iPad and Mac onto the TV, being all of them connected to the AirPort Express. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5209?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • HT2497 do I connect my airport express to my modem via the WAN port and then connect to my imac via ethernet cable?

Do I connect my airport express to my modem via the WAN port and then connect from airport express to my imac with ethernet cable? Is that how you "hard wire" the connection? Because when I do that, I still can't get online. Thanks.

What is the make & model of your modem?
You pretty much stated the correct wiring. There should be an Ethernet cable connected between the modem and the WAN (circle of dots) port on the AirPort Express base station.
Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

  • HT1126 Can I connect the Airport Express directly to my wireless router?

The old owner of my house set the Air port for my use, gave me a password ... when I tried it, the password never worked.
DO not want to lose my old wireless system as it allows me to do more than just the Air Port.
    should I reset the system?

can i connect the airport express into an ethernet port in the wall
I assume you are asking about obtaining an Internet connection here.
First, temporarily turn off the wireless on a laptop and connect the laptop to the Ethernet wall jack with an Ethernet cable. Can you log on to the Internet this way?
If yes, then you can connect an AirPort Express to this Ethernet port and configure it to provide a wireless signal for multiple devices.
If no, then you can connect the Express, but you will not have an Internet connection.

  • You must have connected the Time Capsule with a router that does not work with my direct cable from my ISP

you must have connected the Time Capsule with a router that does not work with my direct cable from my ISP

I tried to answer in your other post.. please stick to one thread ..
What method of internet do you have.. is this fibre install.. if so the TC should just plug in and use dhcp in router mode.. press and hold the reset and it will go back to router mode by default.

  • I cannot print from my iPad using airport express. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to airport express thru USB port. My laptop can print with no problem thru the express unit. My lap top is no a mac.

Good day, my iPad does not seem to pick up my printer. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to my airport express thru the USB port. My laptop which is windows type connects to the printer via airport express thru bonjour and this work well. My iPad does not pick up my printer thru the airport express. I have read about different software that you can download but this seems to be only if you are using a mac. I know my express is working fine as I can use airplay thru my iPad. Any ideas? I do not want to go to the expense of changing my printer, when there was no mention in the express details that your printer had to be AirPrint compatible or indeed wireless.

See this article to learn how to print from an iPad to your USB printer when you have a PC.  The PC will need to be running when you want to print from the iPad.

  • Can I use The Airport Express as a router only. Need your help

    Hi there,
I need to get some help from anyone for a good wireless router for a MacBook Pro. I want to know if anyone had a Airport Express as a router only of some help in this matter.
Hope to get your feedback. Thanks
    From Samantha Kellar

Can you explain a bit more?
The Apple Express is a router. The new Apple Express has a LAN port so you can have a device on a wired connection.
Are you talking about removing the modem and only having the Airport Express?

  • I need help configuring the Airport express from a PC

    Hi there!
I want to configure the airport express from a PC. It runs okay but the connection is open (anyone can browse on my connection)
In a PDF that I found on Apples web site, it says go to
Start-> All programs-> Airport express setup assistant, but there are no programs named Airport on my PC!
Do I have to download a utility for this purpose?
    Fredrik

If all you want to do is add wireless security to an already configured Express, you'll probably want to use the Airport Admin Utility. You should be able to install it by installing this package:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport42forwindows.html
If the PC isn't running at least Windows XP, I think you're out of luck.

  • How do I connect the airport express base station to the DSL modem? Can it be done wirelessly?

Can the airport express base station be wirelessly connected to the DCL modem?

    Alan,
Please provide more information.  (Make/model of the modem and airport express, Mac OS version, etc.)
Most likely your modem is the source of your internet connect and you sound like you are trying to extend your network through the airport express (which is a router).
I don't know what a "DCL modem" is.   Perhaps you meant "DSL".
Most internet modems are either a "Cable Modem" or a "DSL Modem".
Time Warner (TMC) and Comcast typically provide cable modems, which use a coaxial (round) cable.
"DSL Modems" are used with AT&T and they are connected to your telephone wires.
Both of these types of modems usually includes a router built-in, some include a wireless router, too.
Either way, I don't know of any way to connect an Airport base station to a router wirelessly.
That would be called a "bridge" in networking terms and while it may be possible, it is not common.
Most routers use a direct ethernet cable connection, because the data flows much faster than wirelessly.
Normally, one connects to their airport base station with an ethernet cable from the primary home/office computer.
It can be accessed wirelessly, but only if you enable that option in the Airport utility (not the default).
Again, connecting or bridging one router to another router is not a common method.

  • Connecting to Airport Express from a Router

I have an Airport Express that works nicely with my 13"MacBook Pro. However, I still have my Dell PC, and a modem with only one ethernet out port. I assume I will need a router to use both the wired PC and to use my MacBook either wired or wireless with the Airport Express.
When I first bought the Airport Express, I brought it to a friend's house and plugged it into her older Linksys router. This did not produce any wireless internet connection. So I unplugged her Linksys, and plugged from her modem to my Express, and it worked fine.
So, if I need to buy a router to have both of my computers online, how can I be sure it won't just render the Airport Express useless as my friend's Linksys did? Are the newer routers better for this?

I'll have to consider if I want to keep adding Apple hardware to my collection and get an Extreme, or if I just want something cheap for now.
FYI ... your AX will support up to 10 wireless clients (computer, printers, etc.) simultaneously.
I can't wait to try this solution out with my friend's old Linksys and see what happens.
One nice feature of your AX is that it can store up to five different configuration profiles.
What this all means is that you can reconfigure (& save that configuration) for multiple locations, like "home," "school," "friends," etc.
You will need to use the AirPort Utility, located in Applications/Utilities to create & save these profiles.
    To create a new profile:
o Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
o From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
o Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
o Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
o When done setting the options, click Update.
    To switch profiles:
o Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
o From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
o Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.
