Html5 and css3 your thoughts please!

Hi everyone
As it is July the 4th, I though I would ask a question that is nothing to do with dreamweaver or coding problems.
Two years ago I posted this thread - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/457240, on the subject of html5/css3, and most people thought that it was too early to adopt these technologies except for 'early adoption' trial sites.
So what does everyone think now that two years have passed?
Are these still considered too new?
Are you using html5 and/or css3 in your web sites?
Is 'progressive enhancement' and/or 'graceful degradation' now a part of your design/coding strategy when using them?
Is anyone using or experimenting with any of the 'newer' features such as the css3 flex-box model or in-line svg?
Is IE6/7 still part of your 'it must look the same in all browsers' design philosophy, or are you now ignoring these browsers?
Your thoughts and opinions, (not insults please) would be welcome, and if you wish to pose a question on how to use any of these the please do so in a separate thread. Also if anything is stopping you using html5/css3, then say what it is.
There is no correct answer but, (5) points will be awarded for the 2 best discussions, because if someone takes time and thought in posting a reply, then some sort of reward should be available, (I did consider a bottle of wine but).

In my opinion yes.
Are you using html5 and/or css3 in your web sites?
Not yet but I have been looking at some basics of both in preparation to move across once I feel the time is right - 2015 I'll be retired.
Is 'progressive enhancement' and/or 'graceful degradation' now a part of your design/coding strategy when using them?
Nooooooooo! If corners are supposed to be round then square ones is'nt graceful gradation to me.
Is anyone using or experimenting with any of the 'newer' features such as the css3 flex-box model or in-line svg?
Nope....never heard of them.

IE 7 definitely but I don't design to take into consideration IE 6 any longer.
I'am  right! I'm right! Follow the leader or maybe not

What do you mean you can't write HTML5 code?  Are you working within an HTML5 doc type?
To make HTML5 your default doc type, go to Edit > Preferences > New Document.  Click on screenshots below.
To create a new page, go to File > New > Blank page > HTML.  Select none from the 3rd column.  Select HTML5 doc type.  Hit Create button.

  • How do I scale a lot of images using CSS in HTML5 and CSS3

I have a CSS image gallery that displays a larger photo with descriptive text below it, when a thumbnail image is hovered on.
Each photo has code like that following:
    <a class="thumbnail" >
    <img src="thumbs1/paradethumbs/DSC_0073.jpg" alt="thumbnail picture" />
    <span><img src="pics1/paradepics/DSC_0073.jpg" alt=" " /><br /> 19 - a black faced sheep.</span>
    </a>
The first source is a thumbnail,  image stored at a size of 72 by 48.
The second source is an image stored at 600 x 400.
When the thunbnail is hovered on, the larger photo is displayed at its full size using css.
There are 20 or so thumbnails in this gallery, and different numbers in other galleries that use the same code.
The example above is number 19 from 20.
This works fine on tablets and larger displays.
When I wish to show it on an Iphone or similar, with a display that is 480 or less wide, I need to scale the larger photo down to 300 wide.
As the Iphone will have a lower quality of image than a larger display, it will not matter too much if the 600x400 photo is scaled down, and having tried it by giving it an ID with CSS like
#imagescale{ width:300px; } it looks acceptable. However, as IDs are supposed to be unique, then thats a no go area for the remaining photos.
My problem is how do I select the second image source shown in bold above, and scale it and the span text by 50%.
The text is not too important as it can be changed to fit - the image is the main problem.
I need someting like "if the display is less than 600 and the image is in the pics directory, display it at 300 wide".
The browser will hopefully  take care of the height.
    Any suggestiosn would be appreciated.

Thanks Nancy. The general idea and the link to the article helped a lot.
However, the css using using a percentage had unpredictable results when selecting repeated images.
The first one scales to 50% and then the next scales to 50% of the last one (25%)  and so on ad infinitum, unless you click on another object that is not an image.
Using a pixel size like 280px rather than a percentage did the trick, but it also involved changing lots of other items before I could get everything to fit.
Now I have a better knowledge of media queries and how to set them up.
Best of all, all my image galleries work fine just using css and html. Never thought that would happen.
    Take five stars!
And the same to David Powers for his great article.

  • Your thoughts please on getting me out of this problem

I have the latest version of iphoto 4 and have the spinning wheel when loading iphoto. So I need to rebuild the library which I know how to do. My problem is the library is 24GB with 2500 photos in it. I can only free up 17 GB of space on the hard drive. Before it all went wrong I was ordering a Lacie 300 GB hard drive which has now turned up. So I have backed up a copy of the libary onto it. Although the copy will have the same problem but at least its a second copy of the photos. I also backed up before it all went wrong a copy onto my ipod photo of all the full resolution photos. I would like to keep all the album names and whats in them but don't mind losing import dates etc. The reason for this is most of the photos are scanned negatives and the rest of the photos I have saved in 3 different formats as RAW digital olympus files already. What does everyone think is the best way forwards?
    1. Delete the library on my computer and rebuild a new one onto it saved from the copy on my Lacie hard drive. If so do I need to download a piece of software so can start building from the Lacie copy? I will also save a second copy of existing library before building new one.
    2. Go out buy ilife 05 and load iphoto 5 and use the rebuild the database option on it. Although I don't need any of the other features iphoto 5 has to offer.
    3. This would be the option I don't know about yet.
I would be grateful for any help as I have a photo shoot for an actor on Thursday and need to use .mac to load proofs onto the web.
Many thanks and sorry message is so long but needed to get all the facts across.

    Allen,
Before you worry too much about the cramped space on your internal drive, let's see if your iPhoto Library can be resurrected. Instead of doing anything with the iPhoto Library on your boot volume, drag your iPhoto Library to your external drive. The original will be left in place, but an exact duplicate of it will be created on the external drive. Give it time to finish the copy (and iPhoto should not be running while you're doing this). Next, open your Pictures folder in a Finder window, and append an "xx" to the end of the folder's name (any characters will do -- you're just trying to change the name so that when iPhoto is launched, it won't find the folder). Launch iPhoto, and you'll get a dialog asking (among other things) to "Find Library...". In the resulting dialog, navigate to the iPhoto Library that you just placed on the external drive. If it opens, fine; you're done. If you get the spinning beach-ball, it will be the external copy that you will be repairing. That way you can worry about cramped space on the internal drive at your leisure, after your photo library has been resurrected.

  • New Air and Photoshop - Your thoughts..

Despite all the nay sayers out there I'm still drawn to the Air, but my one concern is around running Photoshop. The Air would never be a primary machine for me and for the most part it would be used for traveling, internet use and using Photoshop when away from my iMac. Never anything too demanding - mostly designing web pages and while I wouldn't expect it to be as fast as my primary machine I would get **** annoyed if there was serious performance lag.
Any thoughts or experiences out there? Should the recent upgrades to the Air impact on any of this?
    Thanks.

And I never said you can't use photoshop on a mba.
You can use Ps on MBA, will operate fine for most user imo, OP might want to let us know exactly what they do with Ps routinely, though. If you check out recommended specs for Ps CS4 they aren't that demanding, i.e. MB Air meets these.
also, the trying to do work with large megapixel multi-layer photos on a 13" screen is a joke, especially with the built in intel graphics chip. that is why i bought a 30" samsung for my Mac pro.
I think you've confused yourself in this thread, Glorfindeal, as the latest MB Air has NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, not intel graphics...

  • Longevity of CDs and DVDs -- Your Opinion Please

I have heard all sorts of years that computer made media will last and be useable. I hear 3-5 years. Some people are removing pictures from the HD and putting them on CDs.
They are assuming that anytime in the future these discs will be readable.
What do you know about this issue.

I know nothing - but here is a googled article that suggests -r lasta a long time -- -rw not so long

1/27/06 How long do burned CD-Rs and CD-RWs last?
by Lee Koo (ADMIN) - 1/26/06 5:55 PM
    Question:
I recently read an article by a data storage expert who claimed that burned CD-Rs and CD-RWs can be expected to last only two to five years and not a whole lot more. I personally have commercially pressed CDs from the 1980s that still play fine, but I have begun to notice that some of my burned CD-Rs are beginning to skip, or not start (player shows "no disc"), or have a strange echo that was not on the original. This sounds serious! The expert suggests that for secure long-term storage, high -quality magnetic tape is the way to go. Are any of your readers beginning to notice this problem with their burned CDs, and are there other opinions about how to combat it? Are some burnable CDs of higher quality than others? What are the best storage methods for the discs that will make them last longest?
Submitted by: Carl N. of Cottonwood, Arizona
    Answer:
Factory-pressed CDs are totally different from recordable CDs. In a pressed CD, the data is literally "molded into" (actually pressed into) the media and will not disappear unless the CD is physically damaged. Recordable CDs use a dye that changes color or reflectivity when heated. There are different dye types commonly used in recordable CDs--phthalocyanine, azo, and cyanine, in particular--and they do not all have the same life expectancy and stability.
All of the studies that I have seen except one suggest that properly burned one-time media (-R media, but not -RW media; see below) has an expected life of decades to possibly even centuries. There was a study by NIST (a U.S. government agency, used to be the National Bureau of Standards) on the relative stability of different media here:
    http://www.itl.nist.gov/div895/gipwog/StabilityStudy.pdf
You can see some comparisons in the NIST study of the different dye types. But this study did not attempt to extrapolate the data to a life expectancy, although it did provide data about the relative stability of the different dyes and reflection layers behind them.
However, opinions still differ as to how long such media will last. The OSTA (Optical Storage Technology Association), in a report here:
    http://www.osta.org/technology/cdqa13.htm
suggests that optical recordable media will last 50 to 200 years. This observation is backed by quite a number of studies that I have seen done both by the media makers and others. However, some storage experts suggest numbers more in line with your question, for example the expert in this report suggests a life of only 2 to 5 years:
http://blog.eogn.com/eastmansonline_genealogy/2006/01/lifeexpectancy.html (I have a suspicion that this is the article that you read).
The bottom line is that you are not going to get one single answer that everyone agrees on, although I personally am confident that properly recorded CD-R media can last decades if not a century or two. These 3 articles provide a good starting point for understanding some of the variables involved, which include:
    -Dye type
    -Physical construction of the media
-Storage conditions (temperature, humidity, light exposure, mechanical stress, chemical exposure and air quality)
-Manufacturing conditions (can vary from batch to batch in otherwise identical media of the same brand)
Now let’s mention some other things that are relevant and important:
-The quality of the burner. A borderline defective burner can “under expose” the media to the laser beam, producing a seemingly good recording (at the time of burning) that will “fade” over time (failing weeks, months, years or decades sooner than it should have had the laser beam intensity been correct)
-Recording speed. Fast burns (52X) are probably less stable than somewhat slower burns (say 16x to 32x), but you can burn media too slowly also. There is a very good analogy here to photographic film and exposure levels. The dyes on a given media have a certain range of acceptable “exposures” and outside of that range, you can either under or over expose the media to the laser beam. However, mechanical jitter and certain other variables (largely a function of the quality of the drive) generally will be unconditionally worse at faster speeds.
-Your own handling and storage practices. On a CD, the data “exists” in a dye layer on the label side of the media. This can be scratched from the back (from the label side), which will literally and directly destroy the data. The front side is clear plastic but can also be scratched. While front side damage may make the data less readable or completely unreadable, the data is still intact and undamaged on the label side, and the scratches on the front can normally be removed by polishing the plastic. On recordable DVDs, the data is on a layer “inside” the media, but the media is a laminate of several layers and can delaminate, destroying the data. Flexing – even VERY minor flexing – is particularly bad at causing such damage. And, also, recordable DVDs tend to fail from the outside in, so you can increase your success rate and decrease the incidence of failures by not recording such media beyond 80% to 90% of capacity, leaving the outside edge, where the failure rate is greatest and failure occurs first, blank anyway.
-Labeling: The glues in adhesive labels, or the solvents in pen-type markers, both applied to the label side (the side containing the data) can SLOWLY penetrate the reflective backing and dye layers and destroy the data. Therefore, for archival media, the safest policy is to not label the CD or DVD itself at all. If you do label it, with either a label or a pen, you are, at best, taking a chance with your data (hint: it is safe to write on the clear inner hub (where there is no data at all) with a suitable pen that won’t rub off).
And, finally, I would be remiss if I did not mention one other factor which is really huge: Eraseable “RW” media is FAR less stable than one-time (“R”) media and should absolutely not be used for any permanent recordings of any kind whatsoever. There is no question that RW media can and does “fade”. Although I’ve never seen failure of “R” media that I could attribute with absolute certainty to dye instability, I routinely see “RW” recordings that are unreadable after periods of months to a year or two when there is really no other explanation for the failure. I see this both on CD-RW and DVD+/-RW media, and I advise people in the strongest possible terms not to use “RW” media for anything that they want to consider permanent. Since RW media is also both more expensive (a lot more expensive) and slower, from my perspective the decision to never even buy RW media at all is an easy one from my perspective.

  • Sony TD10, MVC files, 3D, Importing and Saving - your thoughts?

Hello, new to the forum but over the past year I've been collecting bits and pieces and now finally have a 990X cpu with 3XGTX 580's and Premiere Pro...Ya, what did I get in to..., well something to keep my mind busy.
Anyway, Just got my TD10 and a Bloggie too, but looking to see if there is any updates on importing, but more importantly, being able to save the interlaced file that I'm pulling out of my Sony.  Will I need to purchase the Cineform 3d Neo program?  I've downloaded the plugins but not sure if that is enough.  I just Dave Helmly's "Stereoscopic Workflows for Premiere Pro CS5" and will check that out in a bit.
I have been able to get the files off the TD10, edit a bit and combine with Sony's PMB, then play in 3d with Cyberlink's player with my NVidia glasses, pretty cool.
I see there is a couple posts on this topic inside here but they are 2 months old.  I'm just looking for some pointers so I can jump in with both feet and not bang my head against any brick walls.  Looking forward to it.
    Thanks,
    Dan

For what it will cost you in time and plug-ins to go the Cineform/Premiere route, you'll be better off getting Vegas Pro 10. It already recognizes the MVC files flawlessly and allows you to work with them on a single timeline in total, frame-accurate sync.
I don't like the Vegas interface and am in the midst of remapping the keyboard but the ease of working with the footage more than makes up for the quirky keystrokes.
Hopefully Adobe will get it together to handle this format SOON!!!

  • HTML5 and IE

Ok been playing around with HTML5 and so far I like it. Of course I havent delved into the more advanced tags new to verison5 yet. My question though is this. With my limited understanding and reading on the new standards of how browsers support, or dont support, html5 I was under the impression that all current versions of IE supported even the basics of the new html5 standards.
For a perfect example. In creating a new html5 basic layout using the header, footer, article, and nav tags, I'm still forced to do some hacks for IE to style these tags, since they are not defined as a class or id name I assume.
Personally I hate writing hacks for IE and avoid them like the plague! lol Will this be the norm from now on? Will IE9 change all that? How long, if IE8 doesnt support these tags, will we be forced to write hacks for this browser.

    Hi
The very fact that the still current version of IE(8) doesn't support
the html5 page division names is somewhat confusing to me. I thought
that the whole internet buzz over the new html and how all these browser
companies sent delegates to be part of this team of coders and
developers in order to develope the best most cross browser compliant
    html standard to date.
Believe it or not IE5 and IE6 where the most compliant browsers for html and css when they where released, and it was only when the css specs for css2.1 where candidate recommendations and supported by Safari and Mozilla, (I am talking about V1 of these browsers, released 2-3 years after IE6) that they became noticeably 'broken'.
You only need to read a few of the comments posted in replies on the DW forums relating to using the modules/rules of css3 that are candidate recommendations in order to realize how slow and reluctant many designers/developers are to use anything that is not in general use, (progressive enhancements are not regarded by many as the norm). If many designers/developers will not use the features then why expect clients or browser developers to worry about support and more importantly, if users do not see a better experience in more modern/compliant browsers then why should they update/upgrade?
(for the last point above, join in the discussions in the DW general section and offer support for html5 and css3 usage, as I am getting tired of being 'shot down')
As for Microsoft and IE8, they where not a part of the 'group' that developed html5 as this was not done by the W3C, (they have no such excuse for css3 however). But when you remember that Adobe did not want to support html5/css3 in CS5, (it was not in the initial release) and had to release it as an extension after much criticism from both users, (myself included) and the press, then IE8 not supporting these features is not surprising as it was released a year before CS5.
IE9 does support html5 and some of css3, (though not enough) and the IE developers decided to do so before Adobe decided to support them in Dreamweaver.

  • Building with HTML 5 and css3

I am rebuilding our large company website and am looking to implement a range of changes.
I am also now looking to future proof the website as much as possible.
Should  I be using HTML5 and CSS3 (or one or the other) at this stage or is this still some way off at the moment in terms of cross browser support?
For css3 I am looking more at rounded corners gradients and for html5,  forms etc
Also can anyone reccommend any good books on css3 and html5?
    thanks

Look at your analytics before making any changes like this.  And if you don't have analytics yet, go sign up for Google Analytics and just try to get a picture for what your user base is using.  You can make a really nice site, but if your users don't have the technology to see it, it doesn't help anyone.
And just so you know, switching to the HTML5 document type is ok, but using HTML5 elements may not be.  For instance, to support older browsers, you can use the HTML5 shiv include from Google ( http://code.google.com/p/html5shiv/ ) so that older browsers can understand some of the elements.  But it's not a complete fix to enable all functionality in older browsers.

  • Your Comments Please: Business Case for XI

We are a small site commencing a major project that will involve integrating SAP R/3, BW, CRM, and various non-SAP applications (web and client/server). The applications have a number of external interfaces, receiving data from or sending data to external agencies.
I'm trying to understand the costs and benefits of including XI in the solution and would welcome comments from people already using the tool. I've read a lot of the SAP documentation so understand that it is the best thing since sliced bread, but I'd also be interested to hear your general comments and also your thoughts on the following specific points:
    (1) Maintenance effort: since we are a small site we don't have teams of people to work on each piece of technology, what is likely to be the time and effort of the training, initial configuration and on-going support?
    (2) Data transformation capabilities: are there extensive functions to manipulate the data without writing code? If you are familiar with ETL tools such as DataStage, Informatica, etc. how does it compare?
    (3) Performance with large data sets: one of our external data sources will include about two million rows of data per day, how would XI cope?
    (4) What is it like to work with? Do you spend half your time searching for, and trying to decipher notes, and applying patches, or is it generally an enjoyable experience? (for someone who doesn't enjoy the above) -- and if so why is this forum so popular?
    Many thanks
    Rob

    Hi Robert,
I have just starting using XI 3.0 and am finding it a good experience on the whole. In answer to your points :
    1. Maintenance effort is low. Once you have grasped the concepts and steps for development it is relatively easy with no coding (although you should really have a basic understanding of Java). I would recommend attending the SAP XI 3.0 Fundamentals course for training purposes. The initial configuration has been minimal so far as it is Basis who should perform the basic configuration steps during the installation
    2. The mapping tool is a GUI driven tool and has a lot of basic functions for transforming data. It also allows the use of any specific Java functions you may already use to transform data
    3. Performance would be driven by the volume of data and the number of integration servers you have. I would personally recommend having an Integration Server solely for use for the very high volume data set you mention.
    4. From what I have seen so far, it is an enjoyable experience. Patches should be applied regularly by your Basis team so you shouldn't need to worry too much about that side of things. You are bound to get teething difficulties with such a vast product but once you get to grips with it, it is very good indeed.
Finally, I would definitely recommend attending the XI course I mentioned. It concretes the basic understanding you would get from the SAP documentation.
    Hope this helps.
    Kind regards
    Colin
