Ideal non mini dv camera to record football matches to import to imovie 08?

sorry for the 2nd consecutive post, but to go with my previous problem, i am looking for a good cheapish solution to the following problem
currently the video camera i use to record the youth teams football matches is a panasonic NV G5S which requires firewire to transfer to imovie. my macbook is wonderful, but it doesnt have a firewire port. so what i have to do is import the video to my friends older mac, then transfer it to my mac . all very time consuming, around 4 hours for 1 match. also the quality is rather bad, so bad when analysing the game with the coach, we cant make out which player is which at times. therefor i am considering buying a new video camera which will import direct to my macbook without the need for a firewire cable. could someone recommend the best video camera for quaity which is compatable with the mac for around 200-300 pounds. also i dont mind upgrading to imovie 09 should this be a better application to import higher quality videos.
please help
the quality of my video footage when i import from mini dv direct to imovie then tr

Do you have a DVD Recorder (or have access to one)? If so, plug the camcorder into the appropriate port and record a DVD directly, with no need to use a computer, unless you need to edit of course - although some recorders allow limited editing.
Some DVD Recorder models have a FireWire port (IEEE1394 or iLink or DV IN). Otherwise use the RCA connections - Yellow for video, Red and White for audio (although this is an analogue connection so will be of lesser quality). Your Sony would have come with the appropriate analogue cable - it has a mini jack on one end and the 3 RCA connectors on the other end.
Worth a try if all else fails!

  • Quicktime Screen Recorder Movie Won't Import to iMove

I recorded a Skype interview using Quicktime Screen Recorder and want to import it into iMovie for some quick edits before posting online. However, iMovie says it doesn't support the movie. I've tried exporting it via Quicktime to iTunes and other iPad & Apple TV formats but the import process still isn't working. What am I missing? iMovie used to be able to do this in Snow Leopard, but now that I'm all up to date with the newest iMovie and Yosemite OS I can't do it anymore? Please help!

I wish I knew how to tell you that. Where would I see that info?
I use the older v0.7.50 version of MediaInfo. E.g., here are the specs for the 1880x1800 upscaled video clip I made:
And these are the specs for the original screen recording before upscaling:
Unfortunately, I had to use QT 7 Pro to upscale which adds an additional layer codec settings. Would normally prefer to examine a sample problem file itself and test it on my own system in a known environment. Am basically trying to determine if there is anything obviously suspect about your file or whether it is more likely that your iMovie install is bad. For instance, you said that such movies imported correctly under Snow Leopard but did not indicate if the problem file will import to the older system or will import under Yosemite on a different platform if either/both options are available to you.

  • I have a sony hdr td 20ve 3d video camera. Is it possible to import into iMovie 11, edit and export in 3D? I have an iMac 2008 model running Lion 10.7.4

Is it possible to import 3d from the Sony 3D videocamera, model HDR TD 20VE into iMovie 11, edit and export the files to iDVD and produce a disc that plays on a 3d compatible DVD player?

Yes, you can purchase Lion as well as iPhoto and iMovie from the App Store. But before you can do that you must update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 by installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 update. Then you can sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password, locate the items you want, purchase them, and download them to your computer.

  • Canon mini Disk camera doesn't work if external drive connected

A long story.      Anyway, I have a MacPro Intel Dual Core 266 Ghz with 5 Gbs RAM,  4 internal hard drives HD1~HD4 (HD1 OSX 250 and three 500Gb) and two external HD5 (two partitions~HD5 & Time Machine Backups) and HD6 (1 Tb each).
I've been using a Canon mini DV video camera FV-M10 (Firewire 400) for live video (Skype/iChat) and also for importing video into Final Cut Express, After Effects or iMovie up until a few days ago.  Both "live" video and from the recorded mini cassette tape.  Then all of a sudden not one of the software recognized my camera anymore.  I tried both Firewire 800/400 and USB2 connections using a few different cables. In Skype...(sometimes) it automatically shows the name FV-M10 in the camera slot, but the screen is black.  No, I checked if I left the cover on.  I checked my Sony WX-5 digital camera and see if that is recognized.  Yes, both pics and AVCHD videos are seen using the USB connection.
    The problem started like this.
I was downloading a file.  Had to work for an hour and when I came back upstairs.  I noticed that the screen was frozen.   So, I shut the Mac down.  And when I started it again, well nothing happened except for a grey screen.  A half~sized cursor was stuck up in the top left.  But, my mouse also had a cursor which was movable.
It wouldn't even recognize the OSX Install Disk holding down "C" or "Option".  Only starting with "Shift" held down, "Safe Boot"  could I use the basics like Mail, Safari, Firefox.   NO sound and no video. Tried a few times as well as cleaned my OSX HD1 hard drive and re-installed from "Safe Boot" mode".   So, I had it sent into Apple Tokyo for repairs.   Apple put in a new board.     Great!      I came it back in two days.   I cleaned the OSX hard drive and re-installed Mac OSX with the up-dates as well and got some of my main backed up stuff Mail, bookmarks, address book etc.   It started fine.     But, when I went to use Skype, iChat, iMovie or Final Cut Express  they still couldn't recognize my camera.  I had been using the Canon FV M10 camera for a few years with both external hard drives on.  There were never any problems until just before I sent it into the shop.
There was only one way to use my camera.  Un-Plug the external HD6.  Then the camera functions fine.  but remember I had been using this camera with both HD's for around two years without any problems.
Notes on symptoms:  and what actions I took.
Front connections: FW400 Canon camera.  FW800 (Tried connecting HD6)
    Rear Connections: USB2 1) MidiMan 2 x2   2) mouse  3) Canon Printer
                                   FW400 HD5  FW800 (tried HD6)
    With HD6 Connected.
iMovie 11 9.02 : Start iMovie  O.K.  No camera on.   Turned camera "on" then "No Camera Connected" notice came up.   (did this a few times)   Turned camera off.   Quit iMovie.
2nd start:  Camera On.   iMovie freezes.   Spinning Colored beach ball.   I then Force Quit Option-Apple-ESC
iMovie shows (not responding)  When I turn off the camera.  (not responding) disappears and iMovie is working again.  But, "No Camera Connected" shows again.  Quit!
    Un-Plugged (Ejected) HD6.
When I un-plugged HD6,    (tried both the front and rear connections).   iMovie still on.
"No Camera Connected"  I Quit iMovie.
Re-start iMovie:  Camera on… Live video and record miniDV tape can both be seen.
Skype:  Both live video and mini DV tape recording even plays back over Skype screen.
    iChat (same as Skype) O.K.
Since Apple replaced the board 661-3932 Card Video, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT which cost just about $X00.00  (¥XX,000).   I assume that they don't also check all the connections etc. I mean from the connector to the video board.
The call to Apple Tokyo today.
Just talked to Apple (Mac) Tokyo about my computer problem.  Seems like they're trying to squeeze their way of more repairs by saying I have a hard drive configuration problem.   But it doesn't seem like that!   I worked with it 2~3 hours today...and  here is the basic problem.
I've used the Canon FV M10 mini DV camera with Skype, iChat, iMovie and FCEx for few  years  (HD6) is over a year old-the most recent add on) with no problem.    With both external 1Tb hard drives.  And Apple said that it's a 3-party problem.  (different makers etc.)  But, it's NOT!     Yes, they put in a new board.   But, I'd say the problem is from the connection (where I plug the cable into the Mac)  to the board.
When I connect HD6 (1Tb ext hard drive).   FW 800 (either back or front connection) the video camera doesn't work in  Skype, iChat, iMovie, or Final Cut Express.     If I eject and Un-Plug HD6  all of them work fine.  The camera "live" or the camera playing back the mini DV tape video.
Wouldn't this be a problem between the connections (front & back) to the new video board?  Or does anyone have an answer.   Apple seems to have said, "We can't help you".   Please someone help!  thanks

+My mini isn't responding to startup commands like "C" or "D" from the keyboard.+
You'll need a wired usb keyboard for these commands to work -- and the Apple Aluminum keyboard won't work either.
But just about any PC usb keyboard will work. Alt maps to Option and Win-key to CMD.

  • My  sony hdv 1080i mini dv camera won't capture

PLEASE, someone should help me, I need to capture this video now.

As far as I know, HDV does not display during transfter from camcorder via Firewire

  • Older Sony mini DV cam (Sony DCR-PC5) & imovie hd "no camera attached"

My imovie hd does not appear to be compatible with my Sony DCR-PC5 using a mini dv tape. When I plug my fire-wire cable from the camera into my computer my imovie does not recognize the camera. (although my camera recognizes with "DV IN). How can I get imovie to recognize my camera so I can begin downloading?

    Hi
My list to try to find the problem.
    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    *Using WHAT versions ?*
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape.
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Exchange formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
    a technical check.
    connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
    choose 'About../More..
under Firewire.. what do you read..?

    • FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
    • Network storage - DOESN’T WORK

If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted

  • Help.Looking for a new HD/ mini DV camera that will work with FCP ExpressHD

I just bought a imac with final cut express HD and am looking to buy a new HD/mini DV camera for under $900.00 that i will have no problems with my mac.I was looking at the Sony-HDR-HC3 HD mini which i found for $700.00 and that seemed pretty good.Does any one have any suggestions??I would greatly appreciate it.

When you say no problems with your Mac are you aware of the workflow difficulties editing HDV? e.g monitoring via external HD monitor is an expensive option, burning HD DVD's similarly so.
However this cam has an HDMI out to enable you to connect to your HDTV to view your recorded content, so if you can live with monitoring through your computer for editing, this is a decent camera for the $$'s.
A friend of mine has a Sony DCR-HC96 and is pleased with the larg(ish) single CCD, giving improved low light capabilities over other domestic miniDV camcorders.
At around $500, it is a miniDV alternative worthy of consideration, if more suitable for your budget without the HDV editing headaches.
It depends whether you really need/want HDV rather than SD and what your final output requirements are.
    Good Luck, Dave

  • Why won't my Mac Mini detect my Panasonic Mini DV camera?

    Hi
My windows7 laptop will pick it up and I can user Windows movie maker.  However my Mac is not even recognising I have it connected (yes I definetly did and tried 3 different cables).
    Any ideas?
    Its a Panasonic NV-GS27

It would be really helpful to know what model mini you have, how you're connecting the camera (firewire/USB), and whether you are using iMovie or another program to take the camera feed into your mini.
In the event you're using iMovie, not knowing what version you might be using, see one of these two notes: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1059 or http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1924 . If you happen to be using the current iMovie, here are the camera's it recognizes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290

    Hi,
Recently i buy on 27inch iMac with Final Cut Pro X installed.
Also I buy Thunder bolt to firewire adapter & firewire cable from Apple.
Now i am abel to capture my video from DSR-PD175 mini DV camera to FCP X.
How can i export video from Final Cut X to DSR-PD175 mini DV camera?
    Please advise....
    Thanks & Regds

    II'm afraid not.
Not digitally anyway. Maybe by going to a monitor that has analoh AV output to the camera.
    Probably Premiere. Or old FCP7.

  • VHS Capture Through Mini DV Camera...

I am sending the "OUT" of my VCR to the "IN" of my mini DV camera to capture VHS tapes into Premiere through firewire.
Will this cause a level of compression from the mini DV camera or is it simply a pass through with NO compression?
    Thanks!

No, DV is a mild compression. Let's be clear - "uncompressed" video is only used for the highest quality broadcast-type work and takes specialized hard drives and capture cards to work with, and is severe overkill considering VHS is the source. DV is a great choice for what you are doing. Consider that DV uses about 5:1 compression, while DVD is 25:1 or so. To put things in perspective, there are practically no cameras out there that even shoot "uncompressed" video, as they all use some type of compression (not talking about RED or super-high end units).

    ANY COMMENT ARE WELCOMED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    PLEASE HELP OR ANY HINT!!
    THANKS!!

A little late for the original questioner, but here's the
    explanation.
In Linux Webcams and TV-capture cards use the Video 4 Linux
API (application programming interface) to detect, configure, and
use those devices. They appear as devices named /dev/video? - where
? is some number. USB webcams use the USB Video Class (UVC) driver,
or a device-specific driver that handles the USB device and makes
it available as a V4L device.
DV camcorders using IEEE-1394 aka Firewire aka i.Link use the
/dev/video1394 or /dev/raw1394 device interfaces which handle all
sorts of Firewire devices, not just cameras. So far no one has
created a generic IEEE1394 <> Video 4 Linux bridge like the
UVC driver and therefore DV cameras aren't available to
applications that only look for Video 4 Linux devices. There is a
hint of this support being at least planned.
For more information on Linux IEEE-1394 support see:
