Improve gtk apps startup time.

Hi,
I wanted to do a little survery, on whether the "problem" that I have is specific to my computer, or this is how things should be.
Starting a gtk app (like gedit or rox) takes about 1-2 seconds on my system. I know for some people this is not much, but when I work I don't want to wait 2 seconds for app like gedit to start. It is not a matter of wasting time, rather a matter of changing focus. If I press win+r I would like to have rox to be open instantly, so I don't start to think about something else.
I know this is possible, as running uzbl is really fast. It seems like starting in the moment of issuing the command. I know it doesn't use lot of gtk, only some glib.
So in summary:
Do you think such situation is normal? Anyon knows how to decrease the delay?
Thanks,
Matt

flamelab wrote:Gedit is bloated ? Since when ?
I'm talking more the libraries/start up here then general usage.
What are you running them on? A *box, GNOME, KDE? I've always felt that gtk apps on KDE (for example) take a little longer. More my opinion than anything else. Which is understandable, considering the QT bias. Mostly, though, I'd say it comes down to the app. For maximum speed you want something that's small and uses very few (or always loaded) libraries.
NOTE: Gtk apps seem to start faster on my awesome setup than with GNOME. Do any of the GNOME processes (like gnome-settings-daemon) increase the load time? I feel as if they might.
EDIT: Yes, gVim is gtk.
ANOTHER EDIT: If you want a very fast, light, text editor then try mousepad.

  • What affects app startup time the most?

If you find an app to startup slow, what would be the best way to speed it up? Is it the
    1) number of frameworks you linked?
    2) lines of code of your binary?
    3) images loading?
    4) objects loading? (Arrays, etc)
    5) navBar apps vs non navBar apps?
    6) file I/O?
    Any suggestions?

It's pretty tough to answer your question since the answer depends entirely on what your app does and how it does it. The iPhone Programming Guide discusses several factors that affect performance. Giving that a read may be a good idea.

  • Startup time iPad apps?

    Hello everyone,
Can you please share your startup time of your iPad applications.
Our app (Calculator) is taking around 3-5 seconds to load and it seems that people are complaining about it.
You can try the free version here:
    http://itunes.apple.com/app/calculator-x-free/id426007025?mt=8
The paid one is taking a bit longer than the free one 'cos it has skins that we are loading on request only.
If someone have an idea of the startup time optimization please share it
    All the best,
    Tsvete

You can try a reset and try quitting all apps as well. Very few apps actually run in the background - but when you are seeking answers for an issue like this - try anything that you think might help.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
In order to quit or close apps - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Slower Startup and Slower app launch time

Hi, ever since i upgraded to lion, my app launch times and laptop startup times have gotten much slower. Please Help!

Re:I have noticed more frequently since the 4.3.2 upgrade is a longer delay when I launch the "Settings"  App.
    (in response to Bruce Caucutt)
I have noticed the same response since I upgrade to 4.3.2 - I have reset the phone after shutting down all the Opened Apps, no change. Checking this out a bit more I found that the 4 sec. White screen only appears if you are Launching the Settings App first time, there after it appears almost instantly. It seems it just taking a little longer to launch in the first instance.

  • Weblogic 7.0 startup time is very bad

We just upgraded to weblogic 7.0, jdk1.3.1_03 and are on solaris 8. We find that
the startup time is horribly slow and very pathetic. Talked to support, not much
of help there except that they accepted the fact. Removed UDDI, webservices.jar.
Any startup performance improvements from anyone out here? The startup time sucks
a lot and the support wants us to wait till SP1 which would eat away a lot of
developer time waiting for the server to start. Does anyone else have a problem
regarding the same? In 5.1 the whole application used to start up like in 2 minutes,
now we see that it takes about 8-10 minutes which is totally unacceptable.
Any help would be appreciated as this is wasting a lot of our time out here. Is
migrating to weblogic 7.0 worth it given its performance compared to 5.1?
    Shiva.

I have one domain running. In development mode we have only one server.
The development server without anything deployed in it alone takes more
than 2 minutes to startup. Below is the complete dump of the server when
there is nothing deployed in it.
    Time stamp here is 10:39:29.

Any startup performance improvements from anyone out here? The startup

    a lot of

Any help would be appreciated as this is wasting a lot of our time out

  • Compiling with -Os - can it reduce startup time?

    Hi all!
So i was thinking, if i compile selected apps with -Os (e.g.:nautilus, terminal) that doesn't require real CPU power, but deserves a better startup time, will i see any improvements or is it just a matter of executable size?

Usually -Os even cripples performance apparently, the main benefit of -Os is that you can squeeze more into your RAM.

  • Average startup time for 2012 MBP with ML?

I recently bought a brand new 13" mbp (i5 2.5ghz, 4gb ram, 500gb 5400rpm). After installing some apps and updating mountian lion from 10.8 to 10.8.2, startup is much slower now and takes around 45 sec (time period from powering on the mbp to login screen). Also apps are launching slower now. Startup was taking less than its half before updating the mac os. Is there any way to improve the startup time? What is an average boot time for similar mbp?

I ordered mine on May 17, it was shipped from the factory May 24 (China) and delivered to my door the morning of May 25 (time zones and a date line account for the fast enroute time. I ordered the 7200rpm drive, 2gb RAM & glossy screen.
So far, absolutely no problems, the unit works perfectly.

  • Slow system and application startup times

    Hi,
I've got a 17" Macook Pro (Early 2011) 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 - ever since I bought it I feel like it runs a little slow.
I've been a long-time mac used but I feel a little disappointed with this machine.
e.g.: Startup time takes around 4 minutes.
Applications take around 10 seconds to start.
Chrome sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to start, about the same to quit.
My Xbench scores fluctuate wildly - best I've ever got is 220, worst is 18. 160 is about the average.
    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=526647
    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=537725
    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=544252
I feel that tried everything including:
    - Creating a new user
    - Repairing disk permissions
    - DIsk verify and repair
    - Removing all startup items
    - Installing extra ram (currently at 8GB)
It runs well most of the time but frustratingly slow sometimes and there doesn't seem to be any anomalous activity in activity monitor. I feel that it could be the hard disk, but don't know (I always have 250-350gb free).
    Any help appreciated!

Thanks for the link. I've never seen that page before but I have done everything in that list.
It's not a spinning beachball issue - the system doesn't lock-up often it just takes a **** long time to do some things. I didn't really realise it as a problem until I started using other people's older/lower spec'ed macs and noticed that they run FASTER than mine.
Activity monitor pics - just after a restart with my usual apps running:

    Memory https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pq7/activity-monitor
    Disk https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pxg/activity-monitor
Even using Skitch to take those screenshots took ages.
It's almost like the disk or CPU is throttled back or bottlenecked, and always has been...

    Hey there,
During startup of my MacBook Pro, Captive Network Assistant checks 249 different airport, hotel and other misc. WiFi hotspots. Proabaly adding a good 3 minutes to my startup time. ***? This all started while I was on extended layover at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

Looking at the times, I see this only takes a fraction of a second but my startup time is still much much longer than it ever was or should.
Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of this? I deleted the Captive Network Assistant.app from my computer but the checking continues. It seems to be a rarely mentioned issue doing a web search, and nothing like this, although  it's referred to in certain articles.
    Really weird.
    Gregg

I'd take another look at your startup log.
If you look closely, you'll see that all those log messages occurred in the space of 30 milliseconds - by comparison, a human blink takes about 150 milliseconds.
So while I don't doubt you're seeing slow startup time, I don't think CaptiveNetworkSupport is the culprit, per se.
Fortunately, since every startup event is timestamped, it should be easy enough to determine what task is taking the most time.
As for CNS, it's not just an iOS thing - it's standard in Mac OS X, too. I'm also under the impression (but can't confirm) that it only checks the networks that you've previously connected to, so check System Preferences -> Network -> AirPort -> Advanced -> WiFi and delete any networks you no longer use or expect to connect to.

  • Elongated Startup Time with Update to Windows 8.1 Pro (64 bit)

I've gone ahead and installed the Windows 8.1 Professional update after being quite happy with Win 8 Pro.  After about a month of waiting for an improvement in the Restart times - it takes approximately 3 minutes after signing in for me to have a useable system - it occurred to me to ask if anyone else has had a similar experience; and, if so were you able to shorten the time taken to restart (or start) the system?  I figured this may well be a case of outdated drivers; and I've been diligent about installing all Microsoft and Lenovo updates with no discernible improvement.
Any and all suggestions gladly accepted.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

...some more info on this situation.
The system boots relatively quickly to the "Welcome Screen" and after signing in it takes another 3 minutes for me to have a useable system - although that is not completely accurate.  In the course of the 3 minute wait, I am able to start the Task Manager; and by use of the Lenovo "black button" I can get into the Control Panel.  So it seems a large part of the wait time is spent being on hold until Windows Explorer is clear to start.
If I disable all non-Microsoft services via "msconfig", I get a very quick (at least, relatively) startup; however, I am unable to identify which of the non-MS services is giving me grief (or which ones, if there are more than one).  Likewise, a boot in "Safe mode" also provides a fast start up.
Hopefully, some bright soul(s) - from Lenovo or MS or ??? - will come up with a solution to this predicament; altho', at this point, maybe not in time for Christmas!

  • IMac  with SSD and Hard drive very slow startup time

I have a new mid 2011 iMac with a 250gb SSD drive and a 2TB drive. All are from Apple as BTO options. When I first used the iMac my typical startup time from the hardware check chime to desktop was typically 12 seconds. Something, somehow has been changed because now it takes over one minute to boot up from the SSD. After the chime I hear the fans running and also the 2tb drive.  After about 20 seconds I hear the hard drive spin down and then after another 20 seconds it starts up again. Once it starts up the boot up sequences contiunes and returns to the desktop. After this the iMac perfprms as normal. I have tried running disk utility from the recovery partition. I have also reinstalled Lion as well from the recovery partition and neither of these change the outcome.
When I first got the iMac I used time machine to restore from a previous machine into the 2tb partition and then went into advanced options in System preferences>Users&Groups to point to my home folder on the 2Tb drive rather than the default one on the SSD. That was working fine until I discovered software problems with both Preview and Textedit where they would not start up with this arangement. I then repointed my home folder to the default one on the SSD which cured this issue with these programmes leaving my data remaining on the 2Tb drive. Since doing this I have had the one minute boot up problem.
Can anyone offer any advice as to how I may overcome this problem and get my iMac back to starting up in twelve seconds from the SSD as it did before.  Any help would be appreciated on this topic.
    Thanks.

Where do you maintain your Home folder - on the SSD or on the HDD?
If you want to do a clean install (from scratch) then do the following:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
Before you go to the extreme of the above would you do this:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Just in case your system slowness is due to something eating up CPU time. Oh, and if your system is brand new check the upper right corner of the menubar for a "dot" inside the Spotlight glass. This means Spotlight is indexing the drive. Until it finishes your system will be quite sluggish.

  • GTK apps in Qt Environment -- Does it really make a difference?

Whenever I read around about running GTK apps in KDE, I get a lot of horror stories about how needing to load GTK libraries in the Qt environment will degrade my system performance and bog down my desktop experience. After spending a lot of time in two pretty popular GTK apps (Firefox & Gimp), and monitoring my desktop performance, I've certainly not found anything noticable (other than that they look ugly as sin). Furthermore, I keep a system monitoring widget on my desktop, and it doesn't seem to make a lick of difference on my system resources. Are all the warnings about running GTK in Qt simply horror stories? Has anyone actually noticed a difference from running GTK apps in Qt (or the other way around for that matter)?

axel668 wrote:no, I've always used GTK apps in KDE (Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, ...) and never had problems. And there's a great article in the wiki about theming: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … plications

  • X apps (especially gtk apps) "freeze" while fluxbox keeps working

    HI Everyone,
I'm trying to understand if this issue Ive been experienceing for the last several weeks (months?) is related to the "redrawing" and "freezing" issues I've been reading about with KDE.
What I experience is the gui application failing to redraw. The window "freezes", i.e. stops updating. If I switch desktops, and then switch back, whatever was drawn on the other desktop is still showing inside the window outline of the "frozen" app. The window decorations render correctly and the WM in general continues to function.
Firefox and thunderbird seem particularly vulnerable to this syndrome. I've also seen Transmission and gVim be affected. In short gtk apps seem to be mostly what are freezing.
I also typically run quite a few xterms. These will generally not exhibit the graphical redraw problem, but it seems this issue is getting worse, because I'm now seeing xterm commands failing to complete because of what seems to be saturated CPUs. In general I'm able to bring an xterm to the forground over a "frozen" app and it will still function.
I will often keep xosview open. When this freeze-up occurrs, xosview will still be running and indicating that 1 or 2 of the quad-core2 are pegged at 100%.
    The config n brief:
quad-core2 x86_64 intel motherboard w/ 8G RAM and Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics
    kernel26 2.6.35.4-1
    xorg-server 1.8.1.902-1
    fluxbox 1.1.1-1 (therefore no compiz)
I sometimes seem to hear intense disk activity, and a sync command will delay in completing during these events.
I run mdadm RAID1 mirror on all partitions, including swap. Additionally I recently added a second pair of drives that are mirrored, formated ext4, and mounted as /home, all other filesystems are ext3.
Is anyone else running fluxbox, or other WMs besides KDE, seeing these types of X app freeze-up?
Are those having issues in KDE experiencing these same kind of graphic rendering delays? That is, do some apps freeze while other apps and the WM continue to function? Are the freezes associated with GTK apps?
Thank You! for any confirmation, or denial, that this has anything to do with the KDE freeze-ups, or any illuminating info you are able to provide...

Well, it's getting worse and worse.
I've pacman-Syu several times in hopes some update would fix things, but instead it just gets worse.
I did find this morning entries in dmesg that look like ext4 journalling has something to do with it:

However, during this >2minute lockup I looked at htop and it never indicated any of the 4 cpu's were over 3 or 4% , while xosview was showing 3 cpu's pegged at 100%.
The top task in htop was the running audio player, consuming at around 2%.
I've never seen a filesystem looking module at the top of top.
EDIT: man is my friend 8-) for htop: press 'K' to include kernel processes
Is there some way to get further insight into what is happening in the filesystem?
I'll try turning off journalling, maybe I need to convert that new partition to ext3 (a painfuil exercise).
Any help in discecting the CPU utilization is greatly appreciated!
    Thanx!

  • Why is Maverick's startup time so SLOW!!!

Start up time went from 10 seconds to 32 seconds...
I quit Drop Box, wifi & got rid of all programs out of the tray, leaving only the finder & it did not improve the time...
How does one improve the start up time????

The new Maverich update for GMail and iBook obviously fixed other issues...
The original Maverick caused my startup time to go from 10 seconds to 32 seconds...
This revised Maverick startup time is now 18 seconds...
    I greatly appreciate the improvement...

  • [SOLVED] Bug with GTK apps - Icons didn't render correctly

    Hello.
I had been experiencing a strange behaviour of GTK apps at one of my arch systems lately - Icons didn't render correctly (screens attached).
It was not critical for work but frustrating enough. Especially in firefox (notice the half-rendered formulas).
It took me quite some time to figure out that this behaviour was caused by a line
    "Xft.rgba:1 "
in my .Xdefaults config. After I commented it out the bug disappeared.
Qt apps were not affected by this.
Besides, on my second arch system it didn't cause any trouble.
So, I'm not sure whether it is a bug or not.
If it is, I'm not sure whether the problem is on my side, in package or upstream.
I've decided to post it just in case somebody experience something similar.
    Libs versions are:
    gtk2 2.24.22-1
    gtk3 3.10.6-1
    gtkmm 2.24.4-1
    gtkmm3 3.10.0-1
The bug was also present in:
    gtk2 2.24.20-1
    gtk3 3.8.2-1
    gtkmm 2.24.4-1
    gtkmm3 3.8.1-1
