IP Helper still no DHCP address

I have a Cisco 3560 switch with the DHCP server and all workstations plugged in to it. Currently all workstations and servers are on the 10.1.35.0 subnet. I created a new DHCP scope for 10.1.36.0 I want to seperate the servers and workstations. On the rtr I added a secondary Ip address of 10.1.36.2
interface FastEthernet0/0
description connected to 10.1.35.0
ip address 10.1.36.2 255.255.255.0 secondary
ip address 10.1.35.2 255.255.255.0
ip helper-address 10.1.35.52
ip helper-address 10.1.34.55
no ip redirects
duplex auto
speed auto
If I manually assign a 10.1.36 address toa workstation I can access all network resources just fine. If I try to get an address via DHCP I never get an address. My question is why is the DHCP not working? I know the scope is setup correctly. Is there something I need to do on the switch? Below is the switch config. I do not think I even need the IP helper statements since the DHCP server is on the same switch and not across the WAN link.

Your description seems to be talking about 10.1.35.0 and 10.1.36.0 and those are the address and secondary address. But the helper addresses in the config are 10.1.35.52 and 10.1.34.55. I do not understand why you have a helper address for 10.1.35.52 since that address is already within the subnet. You only need helper address to forward to something outside of the subnet (or since we are now dealing with secondary addresses it would be more accurate to say forwarding outside the broadcast domain).
Is the DHCP server at 10.1.35.52 or at 10.1.34.55? Or are there two servers?
I also wonder why you are attempting to define a second subnet on the interface. If the servers and clients are still in the same VLAN (and therefore in the same broadcast domain) what is the benefit of having a separate subnet? A second subnet will not prevent the devices from direct communication. If you could help us understand what you are trying to resolve or what you are trying to accomplish with this we might be able to help you better.
Here are a couple of ideas that might be helpful:
It is my understanding that if two scopes are defined for the same broadcast domain and are reached by ip helper-address that the server will assign addresses from the first pool till it is used up before it will assign addresses from the second pool.
There was a discussion on one of the forums recently about specifying a dhcp smart-relay parameter which was stated was helpful in assigning addresses from two pools. I have not used that and do not know if it will really help with your problem, but you might waqnt to check it out.

  • New Time Capsule: Assign DHCP address and backup to USB disk?

    Hi all,
I am setting up a new Time Capsule and have two questions:
    - I am successfully backing up my MacBook Pro to the internal TC disk. I like loooong backup histories, so I would like to backup my iMac to a separate Time Machine disk attached to the TC via USB. I have googled and not found anyone saying it can be done. I have attached a USB disk and tried to configure TimeMachine to see it, but it is invisible. Is this even possible?
    - I want to assign a specific IP address to a Linux server (Ubuntu Jaunty) on the internal network of the Time Capsule. I can get a "random" DHCP address assigned, but I cannot get a specific one assigned. I have tried to create DHCP Reservations for the Linux box using both its MAC address as well as the DHCP client ID (preferred). No matter what, I still get the random DHCP address. On the linux box, I have made sure to set the Client ID as well as removing the old leases file. Any hints?
Thanks in advance for any help on either front!

...so I would like to backup my iMac to a separate Time Machine disk attached to the TC via USB.
That is not possible with Time Machine.
Time Machine will backup any files residing on your Mac or residing on any disk connected via USB or FireWire directly to your Mac.
Time Machine will NOT backup files residing on a network drive like the USB drive connected to a Time Capsule.
I want to assign a specific IP address to a Linux server (Ubuntu Jaunty) on the internal network of the Time Capsule.
The default settings of the Time Capsule use the addresses 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.200 for DHCP clients. If you want this server to have a fixed IP address, simply configure the server to have a manual IP address in the range 10.0.1.201 to 10.0.1.254.

The physical HyperV server has no problem getting a DHCP address or any routing issues, nor do any of the other clients on the local network, including another HyperV server running server VM's
    What ive tried so far
Deleted Virtual Switch and removed the NIC from the virtual hosts in HyperV Manager- then re-adding new one.
Put in a different network card
Removed Physical host from Domain, renamed machine to different name and re-joined
Used different IP addresses for the Physical host
Reloaded the HyperV server from scratch and created new VM.
Ive had HyperV previously running on this machine without problem, so now i cant see why i cant get it running again.
Anybody have any suggestions on what i can try next, im all out of ideas.

    Hi Fulgent,
I am assuming that , the hyper-v server have two NICs , one for host and the other one  was  configured as an external switch for VMs .
If the VMs can not access the dhcp and local network , please try to  delete the external switch then uninstall the Physical NIC in device manager and  click " scan for hardware changes " to reload it.
Try to create external virtual switch for VMs again .
Any further information please feel free to let us know .

  • WLC 7.0.230.0 - Incorrect DHCP addresses being allocated by internal DHCP server

    Background:
Initially there were 3 SSIDs configured but all of them were assigned a single interface and this interface was configured with the controller management IP address as DHCP server so that the WLC could assign IP addresses to wireless clients, guns and printers etc.
    Issue:
As part of PCI initiative, we decided to segment the traffic in multiple subnets based on type of wireless clients; so now there are 3 interfaces configured and each SSID is assigned a specific dynamic interface and each interface is configured to use the controller management IP address as DHCP server.
There are 3 scopes configured for each of the dynamic interfaces/SSIDs and DHCP proxy is enabled but wirelss clients are still being allocated IP addresses from the original DHCP scope that was associated with the dynamic interface originally assigned to all 3 SSIDs.
    What am I missing here?
    I verified the following:
    1. Each SSID is assigned a different dynamic interface (Users, Voice and Handhelds)
    2. Each dynamic interface is configured to use controllers management IP address as DHCP server
    3. DHCP scopes configured with correct network information for each dynamic interface and enabled

As mentioned in my first post, I am using the management interface IP address of the controller as the DHCP server in the configuration of all the dynamic interfaces.
I have not configured the override DHCP option in the WLAN configuration becuase I have specified the internal DHCP address in the dynamic interface.
But I did check the AP group configuration and there I found that the SSID is not assigned to the correct dynamic interface even if the WLAN configuration is correct.
I will change the AP group configuration to correct this. Thanks!

  • 1142 Autonomous AP not passing DHCP address to clients

    Hi there,
I do hope someone can help me out here because I am having a nightmare with a single AP.
    Setup is as follows:
5 existing APs already on site, all working correctly plugged into a 48 port 2960, (non poe).
customer wants to add another AP to extend capacity.
Installed AP, (config attached) mirrored switchport settings, (below) and fired it up.
Outcome: if you are on a static IP or have received DHCP through another AP then everything works as it should. But DHCP requests are never fulfilled if connected through this AP. (this goes also for a laptop with an existing DHCP address if you go through the \release \renew process) DHCP is served by a server living on the switch.
The AP lives on VLAN 2, hence native .2 on both ends, and wireless clients should recieve a VLAN 1 address. All the other APs, (1131s) are working without a problem and this is driving me NUTS! Have been through configs and every screen of the GUI but cant find any difference in set up. Apart from different AP models the new one is on a pwrinj4 while the others are on pwrinj3's.

  • IP or DHCP address issue with VPN

setup: Mac server 10.6.8, VPN service L2TP, Airpot Extreme software fully updated in company LAN set to DHCP: IP range is 10.0.0/24, DHCP service is OFF in server admin...
    VPN IP range is 10.0.0/24
I noticed sometimes when I VPN into my company network via L2TP (which I do IT support for) that someone on the company LAN gets a notice that another device on the network is using the same IP as their machine.
All clients in the company LAN are set to DHCP and the remote connecting Mac is set to DHCP, and the remote LAN is a different network than the company LAN.
This instance once interrupted remote server access (via VPN) because the remote connecting client somehow attain the IP of the companys' Drobo File server , which itself has a manual IP.
Do I need to set the VPN IP range to a different scope than the company DHCP range? ie. Company DHCP range (in AE) to 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.200 and in VPN IP range settings 10.0.0.201 - 10.0.0.254
Is there a setting I've missed?
    Can anyone help?
    Thx

Yes, You need TWO pools of IP addresses in your LAN.
One is kept by the DHCP server and addresses from this pool are assigned to DHCP clients on the LAN.
The other range is handled by the VPN server and clients connecting to the VPN are assigned one of these addresses. VPN clients do NOT get a DHCP address from the LAN DHCP server.

  • DHCP: force router to assign predefined infinite DHCP address

Does anyone know if its possible to force a router only to assign an infinite DHCP address when a client connect to the network?
In the configuration (2911 router) there is an DHCP server configured which assigns specific IP addresses to certain mac addresses (in this example to Client1 with mac address 00aa.00bb.00cc.ab). Due to security reasons I want to avoid that a user of a device can manually set a different ip address on his device and still be able to use/connect to the router (so far this is possible).
    DHCP config is:
    ip dhcp pool data
     network 192.168.2.0 255.255.255.0
     default-router 192.168.2.1
     dns-server 10.10.10.1
    ip dhcp pool Client1
     host 192.168.2.10 255.255.255.0
     client-identifier 00aa.00bb.00cc.ab
     dns-server 10.10.10.1
     default-router 192.168.2.1
    Thanks, Frank

you can use IP source guard feature along with DHCP snooping  to mitigate such a security threat.
Ip source guard uses DHCP snooping database to test that if incoming packet's source ip is assigned by dhcp server or not, in case of illegal source ip address, the packet will be dropped.

  • WRT54G2 V1 Fails to get WAN DHCP address

    Hi All,
I have a new WRT54G2 V1 that works fine, with the exception it will not pickup a DHCP address from the cable modem.  I have gone through the standard steps assuring the modems, cables and computers work on other setups and have no issues there.
The wireless and hub portions of the G2 work as usual. I flashed the firmware to the latest FW_WRT54G2V1_1.0.04.005_US and there is no change in operation, also the G2 responds correctly to a full reset to factory settings.
On the router's reboot the WAN light comes on briefly (assume self-test), but remains off after the router is fully booted.
Have I forgotten something obvious, or is this an out-of-the-box failure ?
    Cheers,

Once more step which you can try is, connect the Ethernet cable to the LAN Port 1 and the other end of that cable to the Internet Port of the Router and then check if the WAN light on your Router lids or not...
If it still doesn't lid, then i think it might be the problem with the Router itself, and you need to replace your Router.

  • Hyper-V - Legacy NIC not getting DHCP address at boot, but when OS loads the NIC gets a DHCP address

Hi, I have a strange issue with DHCP.
I have a lab environment on a single Hyper-v 2012 Server.  AD, DNS & DHCP exist on a single virtual machine, I have a flat network 192.168.1.x, all VM's are on this network.  I have authorised DHCP and Setup the scope.
A VM has a legacy adaptor, the legacy nic is configured in the boot order as the first device.
When I boot the machine I do not get a DHCP address, however when the OS boots the Legacy NIC then gets a DHCP address??
I need to use a legacy NIC as I need to PXE boot the VM, however I should get an IP address at boot time, which I don't get.
I have run Wireshark on the DHCP server, I can see the legacy NIC do a "DHCP Discover and the DHCP Server respond with a DHCP Offer" however all communication ends there.  I have disable all firewalls and I see no reason for this not to work.
I have done tis before with no issues but I am unable to get this to work on this server!!!!!

    Hi
According to your description , it is recommended to make sure or do :
In your environment , there is no any other valid DHCP, BOOTP or proxy DHCP offers.
Make sure if the DHCP server is overload.
So suggest to test that creating a new “internal virtual switch” and change the settings of VM which provide DHCP service to connect to the new “virtual switch”.
Then create a new VM use legacy NIC also connect to the new “internal  virtual switch” and try to PXE Boot.
    Hope this helps.

  • Not getting DHCP address on HP 8000 Elite

I'm using the Feb 2010 CD. Windows 2003 DHCP server
Boot with the cd and no dhcp address.
If I type "dhcpcd eth0 -n" enough times I will eventually get an address, although the first time it's usually "err, eth0: Failed to lookup hostname via DNS: Name or service not known"
The same CD works OK with a HP dc7900, dc7800, etc. It looks like they all have the same Intel e1000e nic, but maybe no?

I'm starting to investigate issues that may be similar to yours and I had a
thought that I thought I'd share with you ;-)
In what may be a related situation one of our admins is having issues with
the dhcp client on an openSUSE 11.1 (and 11.2) during and after the install
on some Dell servers. Sometimes the dhcp client will not get an ip address.
After some poking he found that there are in fact two dhcp clients available
: dhcpcd (dhcp client daemon) and dhclient (package is called dhcp-client).
The default client in openSUSE - and presumably the Linux environment of
ZENworks Imaging - is dhcpcd v3.x. It seems that there are a number of
reports of this client being problematic. The maintainer of this client has
recently released v5.x which may resolve the issues with v3.x.
In our testing on openSUSE dhclient works much more reliably than dhcpcd,
where "more" is equal to 100%. None of this helps us of course, but it is
background info that leads up to my idea: is it possible to use the other
client, dhclient in the ZEN Linux environment? I don't know if this client
is even included in the ZEN Imaging Linux environment or not. If it isn't
then maybe it might be possible to modify the initrd/root/linux files to
include it. This would at least let you have another means of acquiring a
dhcp ip address. I'm sorry that I do not have the Linux skills to do more
    than make a suggestion...
    Cheers,
    Ron
PS I have submitted an enhancement request via the openFATE website to have
the dhcp client daemon upgraded to v5.x. Maybe if you think it a good idea
you could login to the openFATE portal and vote it up!

  • HREAP, Local Switched WLAN and DHCP Address required

    Hi All,
if i have configure an HREAP AP with a local switched Wlan with "dhcp ADDRESS REQIRED", from my understanding a client will be provided with an ip address from the hreap local infrastructure. How will the controler ensure that no static ip client is able to access the network?
    Any Help Welcome.
    Regards, Michael

I posted about this subject on my site (see link below). Since the posting I learned that the client needs to minimumally pass a DHCP discovery packet for the controller to then allow traffic to pass to the client. This is how it "safe guards" someone putting a static address on their box ...

  • [RVS4000.v2] How to setup Itemized DHCP addressing

    Running RVS4000 on Cable modem.
'Itemized', is probably the wrong word I used in the subject line but this is what I mean:
Some small business type routers allow the user to setup the dhcp addressing so that specific hosts always get the same dhcp address, but I don't see how that might be done on the RVS4000_v2.  The router I just quit using was a NETGEAR FVS-318.  I ditched it in favor of the RVS4000 just for the gigbit lan ports, and still trying to learn to use it, at least as well as I was able to use the Netgear.
On that Netgear, it was clearly marked and notated how to setup the situation I described above, but I'm not finding anything I recognize in the `lan'  settings, on RVS4000 that I can recognize as a way to make that kind of setup.
Is it possible to make the dhcp server, serve the same IP address to a specific host?  Can anyone tell me how it is done?

mpyhala wrote:Hi Harry,Thank you for posting. Right under Server Settings (DHCP) in the setup page you should see Static IP Mapping. This allows you to have the DHCP server provide IP addresses based on the MAC address of the client. Each time that MAC address requests an IP address it will receive the same one. Please let us know if this is what you are looking for or if you need further assistance.
Yup, that was what I needed, thanks.
The terms describing that section are pretty confusing.
    Static IP mapping
And then the first question with dialog box to fill in is titled
    Static IP:{     }
Well, one would expect this to be about assigning Static IPs as its called in several places here.
Though it may actually be a nonsense term, sometihng like like `DHCP derived Static IP', might be a better choice of wording. So the user knows this involves dhcp and not plain Static IP assignment.
But anyway, its what I was after so thanks again.

  • AEX fails to get DHCP address, but works on DLink

Sorry for the long post -- I'm hoping the details will help you diagnose the problem faster in the long run.
My DLink router gets a DHCP IP address from the (Comcast) cable modem, but when I switch to the AirPort Extreme (5th gen, refurbished), it doesn't. It shows an autoconfiguration IP address of the 169.254 variety, suggesting that DHCP isn't working for the AEX. (Just fyi, my girlfriend's macbook can connect to the AEX and get 10.0.1.x IP addresses; I can ping the AEX over wifi.)
Airport Utiltiy shows a red number 2 with a single error indicating Internet failure to get IP address or something. The suggested solution is power-cycling the modem; failing that, contact the ISP. Contacting Comcast was amusing but useless...they gave me instructions for setting up AEX with a DSL modem -- twice -- without understanding my objection!
The AEX is configured for DHCP (not Static or PPPoE), and uses all stock settings (I did both a soft reset and used the Airport Utility to restore default settings...not sure if those two are the same).
I've tried power-cycling the router and cable modem numerous times, including leaving them off for 15+ minutes and leaving the AEX connected for 6+ hours. I tried using the DLink to release the DHCP reservation and then quickly switching the cable over to the AEX.
I read somewhere that resetting the "CMTS (cable modem termination system)" might help. I mentioned it to the Comcast tech support, but they didn't respond.
At this point, I'm not sure what else to try. It could be the refurbished unit is broken, but 95% of the time these sorts of things are configuration issues. (I know a fair amount about networking, but I'm new to Apple products so I could be doing something stupid.) I may try connecting the AEX to the LAN side of the DLink to see if it can get a DHCP address from that...but I'm clearly grasping at straws.
    <whimpers>...Help?

Update: The AEX does get a DHCP address when connected to the LAN side of the DLink gateway. (But the AEX doesn't get one when connected directly to the cable modem. Yet the DLink gets a DHCP address when connected to the cable modem.) So...??!?!!!

  • Cannot get On 100 to get DHCP address

I have used two different network cables, 3 different network locations and factory reset device twice but cannot get it to get a DHCP address.
It boots and status 1 goes solid amber and status 2 blinks amber
Anyone have an issue like this before?

    thanks Robert,
The customer has both voice and data scopes defined on a single dhcp server (C2811 Router). I've managed to get the static ip configured on the ON100 agent. This was accomplished by moving the ON100 lan connection to an uplink port on the switch. Odly enough, I was able to see the ip address assignment in the dhcp pool, but the configuration on the ON100 still had the static configuration from the previous network it was moved from. I used the new dhcp assignment to log into the device and make the change. I am now having the following two problems:
1.) After moving the ON100 back to a switchport (so the pc and monitor would be in the same network surface), the ON100 is still pulling a second ip address from the voice scope, (even though the static ip is still assigned to the mac address). When I clear the entry in in dhcp cache, it reappears, leaving me with a voice and date ip for the same mac.
2.) When attempting to activate the ON100, I get the following error, could this be related to moving the unit from the lab to the customer site?

  • Airports fail to serve DHCP addresses

I am having trouble reconfiguring an existing network with 2 Airport devices -- switching to having the Airports serve addresses via DHCP is failing, and would appreciate help determining what I'm doing wrong here.
    Details:
I have a network with a 16-IP public address space x.x.x.208-223.  My DSL router/firewall is at x.209, and I have various devices with manually assigned statics IPs in the x.210-x.218 range.  The router is configured to serve up the last 4 IP addresses x.219-x.222 via DHCP.  Within the static IP range, I have a Time Capsule at x.210 and an Airport Express at x.214, located at far ends of the house, and running differently named wireless networks.  They have so far been configured with [Connection sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)]  Under Internet > Internet Connection and appropriate manual settings under Internet > TCP/IP.
All has worked fine with this configuration to-date.  Our few devices without a static IP were assigned DHCP addresses from the 219-222 range, whether connected via our hard-wired ethernet network, or over either wireless network -- the addresses picked up from the router at 209.
While the 4 addresses available by DHCP were previously sufficient, with the proliferation of mobile devices in my family, it's not enough anymore, and I am trying to reconfigure the Airports to serve up private network blocks 10.0.x.x and 10.0.y.y via DHCP [Connection sharing: Share a public IP address].  This is not working.  When I reconfigure either Airport in this manner, network devices connecting via wireless no longer can connect to the internet.  Connection to the wireless network itself is fine, but the device is unable to get a DHCP address from the Airport.  Instead, after a short delay it gets a self-assigned address in the 169.254.x.x range.  This happens with either Airport base station, and both with my iPhone 4 as well as my MacBook Pro.
Thinking that having the router serve DHCP within the public space might be interfering with the Airport DHCP in its own private block, I tried disabling DHCP at the router.  Even so, I cannot get the Airports to start serving IP addresses to their wireless clients.
    Any suggestions ?

    Hi Linc,
I appreciate the discussion.  Let me reply in-line

I'm having a lot of trouble understanding your questions. Rather than trying to figure it out, let me tell you how it should work.
You have a DSL modem that is also a router. It gets an address for its WAN interface from your ISP's DHCP server, or it has a static address -- doesn't matter which.
My router has a static WAN IP address, which is in my ISP's subnet.  The LAN is my own public subnet 209.128.72.208/28, and the router's LAN IP address is 209.128.72.209.
It had better not be serving DHCP on the WAN, or you may get kicked off by your ISP. I'd be surprised if you were even able to configure it that way.
No, it's not serving DHCP on the WAN.  It is serving DHCP only on the LAN, in the 209.128.72.219-222 range.
The router's LAN interface has a fixed private IP address that you configure. It serves DHCP to other devices on the LAN.
Yes, that is how it is.
The AE can get an address from the router for its Ethernet port from the router, or it can have a fixed address, whichever you want.
Yes, it is configured with its own static, manually configured address, which is 209.128.72.214, outside of the DHCP range served by the router.
Set it to operate in bridge mode, which means that the wireless network will be like an extension of the wired network, with the same address pool. Wireless devices will get their addresses from the router.
Yes.  To-date I have operated it in bridge mode, exactly that way.  And it's worked great up until now.  Devices with manually assigned IP addresses in the 209.128.72.210-218 range have worked fine either when connected by ethernet or wireless, and those without (iPhones, etc) have picked up DHCP addresses from the router just fine.
The AE does not need to be a DHCP server.
Unless your needs are very unusual, that setup will work for you.
And so it has worked that way for a while.  However, my needs have changed recently.  The range of available IPs for DHCP from the router is limited to 4 devices (209.128.72.219-222).  That worked fine when we had only 4 devices (iPhone, iPad, Roku, and Blackberry).  Now, the kids have wireless devices (iPod touch and an old iPhone).  The available range is not sufficient for 6 devices.  So, rather than serve wireless devices with addresses from the limited remaining IPs in the public subnet, I want to have the AE serve DHCP in a private network 10.1.x.0/24 , which obviously has alot more room.
I'm willing to try turning off DHCP on the router completely.  That doesn't seem to help -- I've tried it twice.
