Hi Jason--
Hmm. I'd look at a couple of things. First, most of your panics mention USB in the backtrace, so have you recently installed a game controller or joystick or something like that? Especially if you had to install a driver for it (and had to reboot the computer, which would most likely mean a kernel extension).
The particular panic you're getting comes from the part of the operating system that manages memory allocation for peripherals. It's saying that it can't allocate that memory because the memory it's trying to allocate can't be used ("not mapped for I/O" in your log).
Disconnect all USB peripherals except your keyboard and mouse and see if you get the panic. And if you can borrow a keyboard and mouse from someone, you might try that, too.
Finally, this page has information on how to resolve kernel panics. He recommends you follow the procedures there in order. I especially agree with his suggestion to run the Apple Hardware Test first to rule out hardware failures.

I didn't see a clue. Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html
Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems? Do you have another mouse you could use?
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Kernal panic log assistance requested

Running a MDD unit, and getting kernal panics. Ran through X-Lab recommends (short of taking it to the store). Ran hardware test loop 43 times, no errors. Rebuilt main drive. Perform system maintenance regularly. Panics occur on both main and back-up drives, as well as Install disk.
Wondering if someone might give me an interpretation of the log...
    Thanks,
    Brad

I'm beginning to think it might be heat related...
G4 DP 867 MDD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   See message

    Brad,
Is it an external FireWire drive ? or a DV camera in the FireWire port ? Guessing you don't get (the same) kernel panic if you remove your FireWire devices.
The CPU encountering the exception changes, although it does seem to be CPU 1 more than CPU 0, so I wouldn't think it is heat.
You could help yourself by re-seating all your RAM (and clean the inside of the Mac while it's out). Bad RAM or badly seated RAM is no.1 cause.

  • KERNAL PANIC ERROR TRANSLATION, PLEASE?

I've been suffering from frequent crashes on this power mac g4 for years now, even back when we had 9 on it. The only alterations of hardware that have been made since we bought it, was an additional 160gb internal harddrive. Other than that, nothing has been touched. This is a work computer. I shouldn't even have to be dealing with this. It should be taken care of by my company. but they're cheap as ****. so this is my last resort. can anyone PLEASE help me translate this panic log (actually there are two):

Since it does not appear to be specific as to any peripheral bus this is some sort of data access error. Those can be hard drive or RAM related. If you are running any sort of disk utility on the machine, you should make sure first of all that it definitely is 10.3.9 compatible. You may also want to verify that the directory is in good shape following these instructions:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n106214
If it is, I'd start to focus on possible hardware issues assuming the drive is nowhere near full and no third party utility software has been used to fix the drive.
If it isn't, and isn't able to be fixed by the above instructions, backup your data, and get Alsoft Disk Warrior 3.0.3.
Check also that the drive's jumper settings are correct for the cable position they are in. The jumper settings are usually on the sticky label of the drive.
If everything checks there and kernel panics persist, then I'd look at possibly replacing the RAM. Note, doing this yourself, if you don't know how may cause static electricity to damage the machine. An authorized service center may be a better option if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.

It appears to be a crash in graphics code. Run the AHT. If this is an iMac that uses shared memory with the video card, run an extended memory test. If it uses dedicated video memory on the video card then the video card could be faulty, note Read Error 0x0061002c.

  • Kernal panic issue help

ive been getting the must restart screen usually coming out of sleep and after restarting sometimes ill have to do it 3-4 times ive done my homework , still happens after unpluging all pereferals ,ive reset PRAM ive reset pow mang unit, ran disk utillities not only archive but did full erase and install and after e&i was not having prob. slowly added pereferals over a few days like lexmark z23, seagate hard drive (for backup only) a microsoft intellimouse expl 2 wireless mouse thinking that when must restart problem occurs, at the report to apple sceen afterward the dates within it would help find specific issue but none of the dates within. ive done all applesite has suggested. my printer and mouse software says its for macosx can anyone give me some feedback or sugestions
what can it be and can anyone make sense of the error report after problem restart if i were to post it? thanks a million

    HI, ken.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein. While you may have done some of the things cited in the FAQ, the order in which they are done can be critically important, hence the roadmap.
If you post the panic log, I will endeavor to see what it can tell us. Instructions on posting the panic log are also found in my FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Kernal panic - log mentions firewire repeatedly but no firewire device

    Hi Guys,
Any help appreciated with this. Firstly although my profile states leopard+ macpro this relates to a G5 running 10.4.11. We had a kernel panic earlier on a machine that has seemed buggy over the last few days (in spite of running Applejack). Weirdly the log mentions firewire repeatedly in spite of no device being mounted (there is a drive plugged in but not mounted + powered off). Ran verify disk + repaired permissions (nothing needed repairing) afterwards. Any ideas? Thank you.

Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
If you suspect RAM,look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.

  • Macbook kernel panic during boot + other kernel panics! HELP PLEASE

    Hello,
I have a w macbook 2,0 ghz duo (2006 edition), 2gb ram, original HD. Operating system: Tiger OsX (updated).
A couple of weeks ago my mb started to display (during a normal session and even after a stand-by) a big message on screen "Please hold down the power button to restart your computer" etc = kernel panic message.
I took a look at the panic.log file and it said:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: firefox-bin
So I thought there was something with firefox and, to resolve definetely this problems, I checked my hd using utility then I tried to install Leopard using the DVD(updated again). After installing Leopard I did not receive kernel panic errors related to firefox-bin thread but now I still have kernel panic problems.
    These are the error messages:
    1. When I boot up the mb, it shows the "restart" message or it FREEZES (doesn't boot up)
    2. The log says that the panic error is related to "ACPI" and Io.apple.firewirefamily (what is it???)
    3. The panic.log file just says:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001A9C68): Kernel trap at 0x001a77f5, type 14=page fault, registers:

  • New Kernal Panic question - Help needed desperate!

    Hi All,
This is the first time I have used the Forum and am hoping that someone can help. I'm having a huge issue with my iMac G5. I had iTunes playing two days ago and no other programmes open at the time. I left my desk for no more the 10 minutes and when I returned I had a message in four languages telling me to restart my computer. I have tried this but now when I try to turn on my iMac, the only screen I get now is the kernal panic and then the fans kick in really loud. Now comes the part where you sit there and shake your head at me! I have read that I should press the option key when turning the iMac back on, the only problem is, I don't know which is the option key!! If someone could let me know it would be much appreciated. Also any other advise would be great as I have no idea what to do.

    Hi RYork,
Which model of iMac G5 do you have? Is it:
    a) one of the original iMac G5's, sold new up til the beginninhg of May 2005,
    b) one of the "ALS" models , with a little "light sensor" bump on the back of the grill on the bottom edge of the computer, an inchor two to the right of the big "Apple" Logo, sold between late April and October, 2005, or
    c) one of the later models with a built in iSight camera, sold after October 12th, 2005?
THe first step here ideally involves resetting the SMU of the computer. The process differs depending on the model that you have. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733 for the two later models and dot point 2, paragraph 9 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 for the more complicated process for the original "first generation" model .
You should disconnect all peripherals other than your keyboard and mouse when troubleshooting this sort of problem. USB hubs and USB ADSL routers are particularly common causes of problems, so make sure you lose both of these especially hwile trying to find the problem. As you have indicated that you are suspicious of your keyboard you may even want to try restarting with it disconnected , too, after trying the SMU reset.
The option key is called the "alt" in the UK. Using this is only going to help if you have a second disc with an operating system to start from though. This could be the iMac G5 DVD that came with your computer, or an external firewire drive with a system installed on it.
If your computer is one of the "first generation" models mentioned above it is quite possible that you have a serious hardware problem. There is an "extension repair" program in place for these computers, even if they are out of warranty, because of the well known hardware problems, so check the details of the program at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302181 .
You say that your husband has a laptop, but you don't say whether it is an Apple or not. If it is then it may be possible to undertake some further troubleshooting using something called "Target Disk Mode", so let us know what it is.
But this keyboard has me worried first of all. If an SMU reset doesn't solve the problem, then disconnect EVERYTHING and see if the computer will now start up before going further down the troubleshooting path.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Kernel panic log help needed

After reading through the discussions, I have come to the conclusion that my computer is experiencing kernel panic. For the last two weeks it has been asking me to restart after I start up. I do- and then it seems to run ok- but very, very slowly.
So, I restarted in safeboot in order to delete any "recent or relevant" .kext files i found in system/library/extensions.
I did not find any that were recent except for itunes update.
so, i deleted the bootcache.ktext. and restarted.
upon restart, my computer was doing great until i pugged in my usb from my modem into the comptuer to connect to the internet. then got the restart screen.
then i checked the panic log and found this:

i don't know what this means- but i see some "usb" letters in there and wonder if this has anything to do with the external modem that my broadband company gave me. although i've been using it for a while and this has only happened recently.
next idea, is that i have recently installed third party software. I cannot determine what was the most recent (is there a log of this?) so i can uninstall it (and how do you go about uninstalling software- just trash it?)
I have recently installed Skype software for VOIP- but i've had it for a month now and this has only happened in the last 2 weeks. I'd unistall it but do not know how.
If someone could look at that log and decipher it- that would be great.
and- honestly, i need a true step by step plan to slove the issue.
    thanks!!!

I will run the test after work today- do I just put in the installation disk or do i need to be in safe boot mode?
I think yours is a good theory- that would explain why my computer is suddenly sooo slow.
If my memory did get knocked out of place- will i have to send it in to be repaired?
But then again- how could this be connected to the USB port?
i've repaired permissions yesterday before the posting. it found lots of errors and said it repaired them. do i need to run it again until it doesn't find any?
The other thing i'm wondering is that I only have 17 days left on my warranty- Should I purchase applecare? i used to think this was ripoff but now i might be singing to a different tune.
Thanks for your help- i'll let you know how it goes this evening.

Not seeing any software culprits in your panic log, but boot into Safe Boot and see if the KPs stop. Hold Shift down at startup and give it much longer to boot than normal.
KPs often can be caused by faulty RAM.

Any help appreciated before I open her up!
I had multiple crashes attempting to post this. Desktop at the point of not useable. GPU temps are between 35 C and 60 C.
Also I can not get computer to crash in safe mode.

Is it possible to add a different card
Not to my knowledge. Whatever card you use would need to have Mac-specific firmware, so don't bother trying a PC card.

A few months ago, a friend's iMac started to crash during random events. Sometimes while on Facebook, sometimes while just surfing the Internet, and sometimes just word processing. I wrote about it in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19560212?ac_cid=op123456#19560212
He brought it to Apple Genius at Apple Store here in town. The Genius ran it through a series of hardware checks and a stress test and couldn't recreate the issue. His only advice was "to shut down once in a while."
Sure enough, the panics continued to happen, always for a different reason. I finally suggested to my friend after some tests from the above thread, to do a Erase and Install of the operating system. This seemed to have fix the issue, but sure enough, the panics resurfaced. Yesterday, the machine had four panics in one day. At this point, I think my friend should take it back to the Apple Store, speak with a Genius and ask them to review all these logs. Basically, making sure he doesn't leave the store until they agree to take a real look at the computer. At this point, he has 10 to 12 crash logs. Here is the latest one:
    Any advice would be appreciated.

It's a hardware fault. To reproduce the issue at the Apple Store, the hardware configuration must be the same, including any wired peripherals.

  • Error message - "You need to restart your computer". With Kernel Panic Logs. Please help identify the problem.

Hi, just now my computer just popped out an error message saying that "You need to restart your computer". I was able to power the iMac back (and i'm typing from my iMac). I did some research about it and it has something to do with the kernel panic..either hardware or software. Since i was able to power back my iMac, i supposed it was software-related problem? Here's the log from /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/
I'm sorry it was quite long and i have no idea how to attach the text file which i have saved. What could be the problem here? And any suggestions to avoid this from happening again? My heart skipped a beat just now.. Hopefully it was no something serious such as hardware problems..
    thank you!
