Novice needs help: inconsistent recording volume ("flutter")?

Hello All,
I'm new to Audition and have been struggling with my recording quality: I'm on a newer dual core Toshiba Qosimio multimedia laptop running Win 7 (64bit) and using a standard desk mic. I read the faq and help files on recording but still remain baffled about this. I'd greatly appreciate some help:
When recording music in Audition (for example: one strum of a guitar chord), I get a kind of fluttering: I don't hear the whole continous chord's sound. There are subtle 'dropouts' of the sound (like it has inconsistent volume). Now, I'm new at this so I'm probably not using the correct terminology..so I posted a wav file to let you hear:

When using this same mic in my older PIV laptop running Win XP, the record quality is fine. Also, when I downloaded Audacity (free audio program) I think I hear the same fluttering..so maybe there is some way I need to set the recording (input) preferences on this machine.

Ah, I had a recent laptop with Connexant Smart Audio, but recently replaced it.
There is a separate Smart Audio Control Panel that I think is accessible elswhere from the Windows Control Panel. I found it almost totally incomprehensible, but seem to remember that there was a way of switching between two options, one simpler than the other.
I would also go into the advanced playback settings to see if there are "enhancements" there. Some of these may affect recording.
As I said before, the only approach with all of this is to find all the various audio contol panels, switch off any effects or enhancements and set all the default sample rates for record and playback to the rate you will be using. Note that the various audio control panels may or may not stay in sync, so it's as well to go round the loop(s) a few times. Do check there is nothing hidden in the "enhancements" area by making sure you scroll down all the options if there are more than just one or two. Note that the Windows audio Control Panel has to be closed and re-opened before you can trust what it says.
None of this is the fault of Audition, which just records what is fed to it. It is the fault of Microsoft that there is a broken sample rate converter in Windows 7 and whoever designed the Connexant audio gui does need to be re-educated, I think.
It would, of course, be very sensible to seek out an external decent usb or similar audio interface.

Need Help! Recording to External Drive

I use MBox into Pro Tools Le 7.1.1 on my MBP and had some issues with Buffer Size where my recordings would stop on both record and playback telling me USB is withholding...change buffer size. I was told by the audio guys at Guitar Center that recording to the internal hard drive is just not good for audio recording and this is why I'm having that problem. So I plugged in my external drive (80 gb USB) and selected it when I was setting up a new Pro Tools Session. I then got a message saying something like "please select a drive where you can record audio." How can I record audio onto my external drive instead of my internal drive? Do I have to format the drive in a specific way? Any help is appreciated!

Hi Jay,
First, launch Protools and then the workspace browser within PT. If you look next to the icon of your new exernal drive, in one of the columns you will see either a "T", or an "R", or maybe a "P". ( I'm not at my system and am drawing a brain spasm at the moment.) At any rate, if the letter is anything other than an "R", click on it and you should be able to select the option to make that drive a recordable volume. Now when you go to create a new session you should be able to put it on your external drive. Give it a shot and let me know.

Need help with recording level!

I am writing a tune on Garage Band. I have recorded several tracks. A few with hardware, a few with soft synths. I find I cannot adjust the recording level with the slider now (soft synth parts only). It seriously needs to be reduced, otherwise it sounds terrible. The slider simply wont move. Something must be wrong. Any ideas?

Ratty, at some point you must have set a point on the volume curve by accident, that and/or setting a pan curve point are the only two things that will disable the volume (and pan) controls)

FCP Novice needs help with video quality and FCP 5!!

I have a real problme that I cannot seem to fix. I think its because I am doing something really wrong!
I have a Sony HC42E MiniDV Camcorder which by default records video in full widescreen. I recorded several tapes this way and have now begun trying to edit them in FCP 5.04 (Tiger 10.4.6). Whenever I log and capture my clips they appear to be fuzzzy and unclear on the Mac monitor whilst being totally crisp and sharp on the camcorder viewfinder. I tried capturing using the DV PAL 48Khz Anamorphic Preset which keeps everything the right size (the final output needs to be true widescreen and not with black bars added) but the resulting video on screen is blurry and bitty. I then tried capturing using the DV PAL 720 x 576 normal preset and the video is a little clearer on the screen (for both presets I have chosen lower field dominance) but when I play back it plays back in widescreen on the mac canvas window but at 4:3 on the camera's viewfinder.
I then assumed that maybe this is just becuase the mac screen (CRT by the way) doesn't use fields. So I exported the sequence as a QT movie using DV PAL 16:9 and used quicktime (OS9 Classic - my compressor has never worked because of the dreaded "unable to connect to baackground process" problem which I've never managed to correct) to convert it to MPEG2. When I import this as an asset into DVD Studio pro 4 and set the track size to 16:9 it comes through at the right aspect ratio. However it looks blurry on screen. Thinking that this will be fine on a TV I burned the disc - inserted it into my DVD player (a good one!) and watched it on my new 32" widescreen TV (a good one!) and the picture qualitty is poor. Its so much blurrier and bittier than the original footage looks when played through the camcorder's viewfinder!
The final footaage looks like an old VHS recording that's a year or two old!
Does anyone know how I can capture my footage in FCP with the maximum quality, edit it without quality loss and the export it for DVD again without such significant quality loss whilst all the time keeping it at proper 16:9 widescreen?
Is there some presets I should be working to?
I'm tearing my hair out! Help!

Brian, I followed your instructions and the DVD burned successfully. However the video quality of the dvd when viewed on my TV ('ve tried on all 3 of my tvs now) is still a lot poorer than the quicktime movie that was imported into DVDSP4. When I play the original QT Movie on my Mac CRT monitor it looks a little blurry and grainy because I guess its non interlaced however when viewed on an external Video monitor it looks great - very sharp.
When I view the burned DVD on my television the picture quality looks like the non interlaced version of the original QT Movie that appeared on my Mac CRT and not the sharp interlaced (lower field) version that appeared on my external video monitor.
Its almost like taking a sharp jpeg into Photoshop and applying a gaussian blur of about 0.3 followed by jepg compression compressing it down to 5% quality!
I'm totally mystified. Can the conversion to Mpeg2 be removing all interlacing so that you get the less sharp computer monitor look? I just want the video on my final DVDs to be as good as the original source footage! I appreciate that along the way there might be loss of some quality but surely not that much?
Does this make sense to you guys or am I still doing something very wrong?
Robert: I have tried setting all manner of drives including a fresh external firewire HD with nothing on it (clean out of the box) but it doesn't seem to help.
Brian: I tried the no network suggestion a few months back but I'm not sure if I got it right. At the moment I have broadband through an external speedtouch usb modem and am also connected (occasionally although not for the last 3 months) via a crossover cable to my PCs ethernet card. When I last tried the No Network solution I had immense trouble getting my internet to work again! Can you please help me by directing me to the best ay to do this while protecting my internet settings?

Complete novice needs help

I hope you can indulge me. I am a mature student studying with the Open University in the UK. In order to complete my degree I have to produce a (small) project (doesn't have to have full functionality) based on a Network application. I am limited to using Java and to some extent the software provided for me, which in this case is JBuilder3.5 (yes I know it's old!). I can, within reason download further software providing my tutor is ok with it but here's the rub I have no idea what I actually need. There is so much to read through and I am feeling a bit thick because I cannot pin anything down.
This is where I would appreciate any help from you experts. My project subject is a browser which can interpret web pages and then configure them to be displayed in a fromat that is prefered by the user not the author. I can build the GUI but I am stuck when it comes to building the functionality behind it. ie what packages do I need to download that can recognise XML/HTML tags in order to rearrange the display? Am I even on the right track? Is it actaully possible?
Because the project is only worked over a small period I don't need full functionality but have elected to deal with input/output fields, text placemnt/display/font (infromationl), graphic placement/deletion. I may also be alowed to update my version of Jbuilder.
I would be so grateful if somebody could at least point me in the right direction. I need to add here that I feel so stupid that I need replies in very plain english :o)

Saw your note about using a proper IDE unfortunately I am obliged to use the one provided by my UNI. Reason being the markers of my project may not be up to date with other IDE's. Though I may be allowed to use a newer version of JBuilder. I am waiting to hear if I have permission to do so.
Here's another thick question. from what I remember, when studying Java last year, it has a number of libraries that can be imported to a project. When I download the HTML and XML stuff are they just added to the libraries already in place and if so how is it done.
ps hope they also have tutorials with them for the coding :o(
One last question; am I in the right forum for this sort of query or is there a novice one for thicko's like me? :o)

Network Expansion - Novice Needs Help

I would appreciate some guidance with a change I need to make to my wireless network. What I currently have is working fine, but I'm pretty much a novice at this.
My current network consists of two computers. Computer A is a desktop connected to a WRT54G2 wireless router via patchcord. This is my primary computer, used to create the network using the CD that came with the router. Computer B is a laptop that connects to the the network with a WPC54G wireless notebook adaptor. Both computers run Windows XP, and the network is working well. The network uses WEP security.
I am ready to add Computer C to the network. Computer C is a desktop and will become my primary computer. Computer C is also running Win XP. I want to connect it via patchcord to the WRT54G2 router, replacing computer A. I have purchased a WUSB54GC USB adaptor to connect computer A to the wireless network.
I'm not sure where to begin. Do I need to first uninstall any Linksys software from both computers A & B, in order to start all over? Can I just unplug computer A from the router, plug in computer C, and keep going? Any suggestions on how to approach this change without too much gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

There is no need to to uninstall the software of router from any computer.
You need to connect the computer C to router with a chord and on Computer A connect the adapter and install the set-up disk for it.

Need help for record deletion from custom table

Hi friends
I have to write a custom program which will be generic to delete any table record with date field.
This program needs to be generic (should be able to delete records from any custom table) in nature with selection screen parameters as:
Table Name and Number of Days prior to which records are deleted, both mandatory.
Program Flow:
1.     From number of days calculate date before which records are deleted, ( current date u2013 no. of days = past date).
2.     Custom table have date field, delete records prior to that date.
3.     Program may be scheduled for background job, put default values for both fields. No. of days should not be less than 60.
4.     Classical Report output with number of records deleted.
My query is how will I know the name of the Date field so that I can write a DELETE query.
If I use 'DDIF_FIELDINFO_GET' it gives me all field names but how to filter out?

I have added field on the selection screen as p_fieldname and got the F4 help for it , so that the user will get the field name run time as per the table name.
Now I am facing problem while writing the DELETE query.
I wrote like
DELETE (fp_tab)
where (fp_fieldname) LE date
It is not working. I also tried with taking a string to concatenate fp_fieldname, LE and date to l_string
when I write like this:
DELETE (fp_tab)
where (l_string) , sy-subrc is getting 4 and no records are getting deleted.
I do not understand where the dynamic Delete is failing??

Need help updating records from a subset yielded by a subquery.

Hi, retired, hobby coder needing (further) help in transact-sql scripting with a view to creating a stored procedure within a Sequel DB. For the purposes of this investigation I have a table with 23 records. I am trying to update a specific
field for 10 of the records based on the (TOP 10) records selected from a sub query where I select the TOP 20 records based upon different field.
I select my desired 10 records (TOP 10) from a sup query selecting the TOP 20 based upon the date field (latest 20) for a specific user (GID) as follows:
I then attempt to update only these 10 records as follows:
As you can see it updated all 23 rows in the table, not just the 10 I yielded by the underlying query.
In reviewing the documentation it appeared that referencing the Scores_id column and using the 'IN' keyword would work, i.e., UPDATE Scores WHERE Score_id IN (SELECT TOP 10* ..... would be appropriate but I got the an error message, 'Only one expression
can be specified in the select list when the subquery is not introduced with EXISTS.'
Can someone assist me with the proper syntax for this script? Additionally, since there are limitations on the number of variables which can be used any advice on how to structure a stored procedure where the GID is the initial variable and Score_id

The query you have written will always update all or no rows in the table, since it says
UPDATE Scores
SET ...
WHERE EXISTS (...)
The EXISTS clause is, logically, evaluated for each row. Normally, when you use EXISTS you correlated the subquery with the surrounding query, so that the values the subquery works with are different for each row. But your subquery is uncorrelated, and will
return the same value, TRUE or FALSE, for each row.
IN can certainly work, but then you cannot have "SELECT TOP 10 *", but you need to have "SELECT TOP Score_id", since when you use IN, the subquery must be a single-column query.
Another alternative, which is somewhat difficult to digest the first you see it, but which is more efficient, and more concise, once you have learn it, is to work directly from the query you have:
WITH CTE AS (
SELECT TOP 10 *
FROM (SELECT TOP 20...
UPDATE CTE
SET Used = '*'

Need help in recording multiple seperate tracks

hello, i've used cool edit and now audition to record for the last eight years or so. however, i've never gone byond tracking more then one mic at a time in the past. with some upcoming projects i will be tracking a full band and need to record multiple mics (most challenging being drums) and i need to be able to assign each mic to its own seperate track in real time.
i will be using a PreSonus firebox which was four inputs. i can make do with four mics just fine. my only problem is i can't find any info and i'm not even sure audition allows for simultaneous multi channel recording. it is imperative i be able to have separation for each mic for mixing. any advice/help? will i be forced to find another program?

Audition handles multitrack recording just fine.
You don't say what version of Audition you have (there are variations in how to set up the recording) but if you're on the current 3.0 version, you'd:
Under Edit/Audio Hardware Set up, click on the Multitrack tab at the top. On the "Audio Driver" menu, select the appriopriate Presonus driver. Under "Default Input" Select the Presonus interface. Also select it on the Output menu if you want to outuput sound that way for monitoring. Click Okay.
Go to Multitrack view in the main programme.
Work down the inputs for each track (marked with a right-facing arrow) and select "Mono" and the Presonus output you wish to go to that track. If you want to output back to the Presonus, do the same with the output selection, otherwise just leave it to "Main".
(At this point, I suggest you save a session as "Basic multi setup" or similar to make it faster for the next take--then do a "Save As" for the actual recording you're about to do.)
Click the "R" button on each track you wish to record in (you don't have to do all tracks every time) to arm for record.
Click the main Record button to actually start recording.
If you have an earlier version of Audition or Cool Edit Pro, the procedure is similar but some of the controls are accessed in different ways.

Hi Kamesh,
First mention your both records in the first step of Batch Input recording in the LSMW object by clicking on Right Arrow button. After that in the Field Mapping and Conversion rules step, you can use Events i.e., Beginof_Record_,_End_of_Record_ to handle two different records. For example, in FS00 transaction we can have two types of G/L Accounts, one is P&L Statement account and another is Balance sheet account. So, I have two records for creation of the these different accounts.
Based upon the field value in the file, I need to trigger any one recording. So, we need to write the code in this fashion:
At the Beginof_Record_ of first recording, open the IF condition like
IF <acct_type> = 'P'
and in the Endof_Record_ event of first recording, after "transfer_record" statement, write "ENDIF".
Similarly, write IF condition for another recording. In this way you can handle both recordings in one LSMW object.
Note: If you are not able to see anything in blue colour with the events I am mentioning, press CTRL+F7, set the Global Data Definitions and Processing times indicator and save it. You will see the events.

Need help getting record(s) from layered tables

Greetings,
   The company database has what I can only describe as layered tables. Table 1 has a record that references actual data in another table. The data in Table 1 is a numeric reference to the data in Table 2. I need to be able to get the referenced data from Table 2 based on the identifier in Table 1.
   Hopefully this makes some sense. I am on a very short deadline having spent the majority of the weekend trying to figure this out.
   Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

The join is in place. The problem is that I can't get just the data for the record I want. I think I need to provide more information here...
diaryentries.did is linked to TNTEntry.did and medsentry.did and painentry.did
for diaryentries.MID i want to get the related medsentry.medication and the painentry.painlevel and the TNTentry."treatmenttype" but treatmenttype is a numeric value that is defined in the dropdown_items table. This table is used for many drop down menus. I need to be able to extract the corrosponding data to my TNTentry table based on the MID.
The TNTEntry table is linked to the dropdown_items table by TNTEntry.DID -> dropdown_items.dd_id. The dropdown_items table then has several rows that basically translate the various items to different languages. If I put dropdown_items.english in my report, I seem to get each and every possible entry in the dropdown_items table as opposed to only those entries that corrospond to the MID from diaryentries.

Novice needs help with multi-cam

Hi, I've got 3 cameras and a seperate audio track synched in my timeline. (CC Premiere Pro 6 on a PC with - unfortunately, Windows 8) The cameras didn't all start at the same time but no problem the clips are where they need to be now. I've made several edits getting rid of stuff I don't need, and I've added a title, end note, and a few stills. All the tutorials I've watched deal with starting clips at the beginning but I can't seem to find one that shows what to do with a bunch of things already in the timeline where they need to be. Here's a screen shot if that helps to explain what I've done so far.I've tried nesting the clips and dragging that into the source panel, but no luck. Obviously, I'm missing something here (this is my very first project) hope someone can help.

or if you really want to leave all your little stills and titles there and not have to add them later then alt+select all the video clips only and right click>nest. You can select all the audio clips too but I usually leave them there so I can see them all individually (personal preference) and I never have audio follow video in my edits so it's not necessary. Then right click>Multicam>Enable and proceed with #3 from Jim's list. I actually prefer to ignore the wrench and add that one touch little multicam toggle icon to the program monitor which it appears you've already done so you just need to select the far right icon on the bottom of your program window next to the little camera icon. That's the multicam toggle. Multicam cutting now takes place in the Program Window instead of the Source Window like it was in CS6. Oh also, the little "tweaks" that Jim mentioned can be easily done with the Rolling Edit Tool (Shortcut: N) You'll see. Good luck!

T500 overheating problems - Novice needs help

Like for some others in this forum, my Thinkpad T500 is overheating.
Here are my specs:
Model: T500 (Type: 2055)
Processor: P8600 (2.40GHz)
GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650
When I'm doing most regular activities (browsing,emailing, documents), laptop is fine. The unit gets warm underneath, but I've not had problems.
If I'm doing more intensive activities (watching local video,Netflix, or Skyping), laptop starts to heat up enough so that it's uncomfortable on my lap.
When I play games (Nothing crazy intensive: e.g. Minecraft, Civilization 4), and sometimes when I Skype, the unit gets extremely hot underneath and shuts off without warning.
The heat seems to be originating from the left-hand side of the laptop, near the back. Unless I'm mistaken, this is where the GPU is located. And this makes sense, since the overheating seems to be related to graphics-intensive activities.
So, my questions are:
1. How can I diagnose this problem further? What's a good utility to use to monitor heat of GPU and CPU? Anything else I can use ?
2. Are there any settings I can change on my laptop to prevent the automatic shut-downs and excessive heat?
3. I've seen some mention of people cleaning fans, replacing fans / cooling units, or adding thermal paste. Need some advice there too.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Good day and welcome to the community.
If you've never had the machine open to blow out dust from around the fan/heatsink assembly, I'd recommend that first. If you download a copy of your Hardware Manual: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/43y6630_04.pdf , you'll see that by pulling the palmrest, keyboard and keyboard bezel (manual pages 88-90, 92-93 and 102-103, respectively), that you'll expose the top side of the assembly in the upper left. The top view image on page 107 is helpful. The CPU is beneath the end section of the wider heatpipe and the GPU is beneath the narrower.
While holding the blades of the fan stationary (important!), you can use canned air to blow all of the dust from the inside out through the exhaust vents. Once done, button everything up and see if things run cooler. If you're still overheating, you may need to clean off the old thermal compound and apply new, but try the de-dusting first.

Scroll about 2/3 down the page for the download link for v0.62 which is the latest. It can be run in monitor-only mode or can be configured to provide a level of control over your fan speed.
Please post back your results from the first step and we can go from there.

PSE7, Novice needs help w/background

I would like to take Grandpa's hairy knee out of our new granddaughter's face. I've tried selecting her image and used a feather of 2 pixels. I then used a blank background with different effects, clouds, etc. It's not working because it is too stark and not natural looking. Is there a way I can make it look as though she is resting her head on a soft blanket? If so, PLEASE give me details as to how to obtain that result. I am trying to learn and need specifics.
I'd also like to learn how to "soften" her image and change it to B/W....so much to learn, so little time. Thanks!!

Hi Mark, here come the questions, so elementary it's embarrassing. I found an image of a blanket from a picture I took earlier:
I assume I bring this image into PSE and make a selection with the selection brush.
2) You then said to "copy this selection to the clipboard". What is the clipboard, and how do I copy it there? I have four books on PSE and couldn't find the "clipboard"
3) Next, open my picture and paste the blanket from the clipboard, creating a new layer. Again, can you give me the specifics?
I know I can use your image, but I really want to learn how to do this by myself. And, i want the image in high resolution. Your help is appreciated!
