One more with iChat problems - but one system works, the other doesn't!

This might be an interesting addition to the discussions regarding not being able to connect via iChat.
- I'm using 10.4.8 on my Intel iMac and my G4 PowerBook.
- Both are running iChat 3.1.6 (v441)
- Both are connected via their built-in Airport cards
- Both OS X firewalls are on, but no iChat ports are being forwarded
- no iChat ports are being forwarded in the router either
- The firewall in the router is turned off
Unfortunately my PowerBook does not have a camera, so I can only try text and audio. Text works on both systems.
Audio on the PowerBook works like a charm using the appleu3test accounts. On the iMac I get this error immediately:

I'm a bit stuck at the moment, as I can't reproduce what's different between the two systems. Btw, I did try this using the root account, just to make sure no 3rd party app is interfering.

Two iPhones - one syncs reminders, the other doesn't

I have two iPhones - one is a work-issued phone (an iPhone 5), and the other (a 5S) is my personal phone. I've also got an iPad Air. All of them have the most current iOS (8.1.3). For some reason, the Reminders app on my 5S won't sync with the other devices.
If I create a reminder on my 5, or on my iPad, or on iCloud, it will instantly update on all of those devices. But not on the 5S. If I create a reminder on my 5S, it seems to upload to the others (and, actually, I did it just now and all of a sudden it synced everything else from the other devices).
Any ideas why my 5S won't pull down updates on Reminders?

Thanks for the reply. I tried what you suggested (I think I've tried that in the past, to varying degrees of success) and once I turned sync back on, it did download the current list of reminders. However, when I created one on the 5, it still hasn't shown up on the 5S, some 15 minutes later (although it immediately showed up on the iPad). I'm puzzled as to why that one phone just won't seem to sync like the others do...

I am not able to receive any phone calls but it does work the other way so I can make calls - has anybody had similar problems ?

Any time someone tries to call me my iPhone is ringing and when I want to pick the call I only get Tut Tut .... and on the other end people tell

While your BB may not, while in your possession, have been part of a BES environment, it nevertheless likely has an IT policy in place as this is one of the key symptoms of that fact. If it ever was part of BES, then there are specific steps that must be taken to remove the IT Policy...just removing it from BES does not remove the policy. The process to remove it is totally destructive, so be sure you back up first. Also, when you restore, DO NOT do a full restore...rather, do a selective restore of only those things you need...if you do a full restore, you will simply put that IT Policy back onto your BB and be right back where you started.

New SMTP server has SSL. One of two Ethernet networked Macs works, the other doesn't. Help!

We changed from Optimum to Verizon FIOS today. We have two Macs connected by Ethernet. The Mini running Mavericks and Thunderbird 24.6 was able to set the outgoing server as smtp.verizon.net on port 465 with connection security SSL/TLS with no authentication and it works fine.
The other Mac is an ancient G4 running 10.3.9 and TB 2.0.23 and it does not accept running without authentication.
With optonline, we ran on port 25 with no authentication.
I tried putting in the user name and pw we entered on verizon.net, and that doesn't work. I tried the user name and pw from our pop mailbox, and that doesn't work. BTW, the incoming mail is working fine on both computers.
What's going on? How do we fix it?

But I don't know what user name and password to enter. When I enter the username and password from my Verizon account on the 2nd linked computer, it does not recognize it. Does it have to be entered on both computers? What do we select on the 1st computer running Mavericks? Normal password? Then do we enter our Verizon username and password?

Firefox closes when I close the last tab, on one system not the other

Ctrl-W closes the last tab. On my Windows XP machine I get an empty window Good. This is like Windows and Excel, you can close all pages without quitting the application.
On my Windows XP Professional system it Exits Firefox. Not good. I don't want it to close until I hit Alt-F4.

Mystery - One scripts folder works - the other doesn't

I've been using some of Doug's great iTunes scripts <http://dougscripts.com/itunes/> for a couple of years, but the following unsolved mystery is driving me nuts:
According to his ReadMe files (and other documentation), there are two locations where iTunes scripts can be placed:
(1) user name > Library > iTunes > Scripts
or
(2) user name > Library > Scripts > Applications > iTunes
Doug's scripts even come with an installer that places scripts in location #1. My problem is that _*no matter what I do, scripts that I place in location #1 do not show up in the Script Menu._* (Of course I mean when iTunes is the frontmost application.)
Scripts in location #2 work fine -- so that's where I always place mine -- but there are advantages to location #1, such as (a) assigning keyboard shortcuts to scripts via System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse, and (b) Doug's installers, which I can't use; so I always have to install my scripts manually.
Frustrated, I've simply accepted this for some time now. But after installing some new scripts recently, this issue is nagging me, once again. Hence this post.
What could possibly be preventing location #1 from working for me, when it apparently works fine for others?

Create and log in into a new account.
Install a doug script.
Launch 'iTunes'.
View the menu items of the 'iTunes' script menu.
If you see and can execute the doug script, via 'iTunes' script menu, you verified a problem specific to your origianl user account.
If so, consider booting from the installation disc, and perform a 'Disk Utility' 'Repair Disk' action.
Log in into the original account and see if the 'iTunes' script menu is now functional.
If either - the new account and / or 'Repair Disk' suggestion(s) fail - consider the new Mac way (originally a 'Windoze' only way) to resolve System level problems - reinstall MacOS X, and enjoy the time spent updating MacOS X.

One email works, the other not so much

VPN: one is working, the other is not...

I have several interfaces:
outside

Currently I have remote access anyconnect users who are able to VPN in and get access to the outside internet and inside devices.
I am trying to add another VPN config to allow users to connect to the haklab resources from the outside.
Currently they are able to connect to the VPN and access outside resources, but they are unable to see any of the devices on the inside.
I have created a user, pronto which should be forced in recieving the mdc3 connection profile which assigns them an IP address from my DHCP server which is also on that lan segment. The VPN users are currently reciving an address from DHCP. In my case 10.10.10.20 was assigned to pronto when he VPN'd in.
My goal is to determine why pronto can't access any of the devices on the haklab interface

Handoff works one way, not the other

between my iOS devices and my Macs, handoff works consistently in the MacOS to iOS handoff direction, but almost never works the other way around. For example, if I open Safari on the Mac, the lock screen on my iOS devices shows a Safari icon, sliding that takes me to the same webpage I was viewing on the Mac. However, if I view a webpage on Safari, I almost never get the extra handoff Safari icon on the Mac dock. What gives? I believed this was supposed to be working properly in iOS 8 already...

If it can help, I post the same message I posted in a similar thread, as I have 2 iOS devices, iPhone and iPad, an iMac and a MBP Retina 13" that's the one that gives problems but ONLY with official Yosemite. If I use the beta I've installed on a USB disk, everything goes well.
Here's my experience:
I've the same problem as fxdr, on my MacBookPro Retina 13" early 2013.
Main problem is that Continuity works from iOS devices (iPad Air & iPhone 5s) to MBP but not in opposite way.
I already tried to log off and back on in iCloud on all devices, as suggested here by Chris (this topic was one of the first resources I found) without definitive results. On the contrary, it seemed to give me some problems (now vanished) between iOS devices, as they stopped working too. doing it again fixed it
Some more details:
1) both iOS devices work like a charm with my iMac late 2012: first tests were with MBP because I had the chance to update it first.
2) both iOS devices work like a charm with the MBP IF I USE Yosemite BETA that I've installed on an external USB disk. It worked before official release and still works (again tested few hours ago)
3) sometimes, on "normal" MBP, on its own, it starts work or stops without any advice, or works with iPhone but not with iPad or viceversa.
4) It seemed to work when I deactivated FileVault on MBP (Yosemite setup asked for it to activate on first start, while it didn't on iMac, and so I did) but, after some time, it started again to give problems.
5) when I power on MBP with "normal" disk and Yosemite official, if it works, it's not immediate. It starts working after 10-15 minutes. With USB disk and Beta, it's immediate
6) for example, now, with battery at 14% it works from iOS device to MBP only with both devices in both ways, but 30 minutes ago, it didn't in both ways. Powered up iMac and everything works in a flash.
Now, I'm waiting for a call from Apple support. Then, if I can't find a solution, I'll try a recovery. Any suggestions?

You're very welcome but Peggy really gave you the answer already.
With regard to the full screen apps, I don't think Apple have yet worked out how to make them elegantly coexist with other apps. The closest you can get is the four finger swipe gestures you may use on a trackpad if you have one (Mission Control and App Exposé).
In fact nowadays I use the App Exposé (four finger swipe down gesture) more often than I use Command-Accent to move between documents in the same app (when not in full screen). It also as the advantage of showing you thumbnails of recently opened documents below the ones already open within the app. If you haven't tried it, I suggest you give it a whirl.
I can't remember now but I think the four finger gestures are not enabled by default and you must switch them on in System Preferences > Trackpad > More Gestures.

I spoke with Apple Support this morning and they believe anything MobileMe related is due to the conversion over to iCloud that's taking place.
As for other email clients, check with your host to see if settings have changed on their end. I use inmotionhosting.com and over the weekend the updated their outgoing requirements so that a password authentication is now needed.
Hope that helps get some on the right path to resolving their issues!

Deploy from one system to the next

I have built an intranet application in HTMLDB for a client, and they are asking me for an easy way to deploy the applcation from one system to the next, say from develop to test and then from test to production.
Their wish is to do this with the push of one button, now I know that that is quite hard to realize, but I'd like to know how you people do that. Right now all i can think of is remember what you changed, export it and import it into the new application, but that's quite a hassle.
I found the export script in the utilities, but I haven't look at it closely enough to be able to reverse that process, is that the way it should be done?

what we made as a whole instead of all these separate

I have to explain to my customers who want to be able
to work with HTMLDB that when they want to deploy an
application from one environment to the next they
have to:
- export an application
- export the css files
- export the images
- download the static files (because they can be
exported but not imported(!) )
- create a ddl of the schema
- export csv files from the data in the tablesSounds like an opportunity to write a new utility. ;>)
and then import it all one by one in the new
environment
and then hope they didn't forget anything and have to
debug to find the differences between environments.
Am I the only one that is running into this problem?No. Anyone that's developing and deploying production apps is in the same boat. Obviously, there are varying tolerances and circumstances that make this more or less of a pain for each of us.
I am solely talking about the stuff in the database
now, not the files on the filesystem.....If it's all in the database (which we know it is) then you can certainly bundle all of those steps into a nice little package (pun intended). Let us know how it comes out!
