Organization question

I have two sources of movies for my baby - a Sony Handycam DVD-405 DVD camcorder, and a Canon Powershot SD400 digital camera.
I can rip my DVD's from the camcorder using Handbrake, and create MP4 files and the movie files from the digital camera are of .mov extension.
What is the best way to "organize" these video files? I tried iMovie where I can bring in the MP4's but it does not seem to be able to understand the metadata about timecode (where was the video footage taken) for the .mov files from the digital camera. And I think iPhoto is unable to read the DVD ripped files.
If I wanted to chronologically organize the clips irrespective of which camera they were shot from, what would be the best place to go to?

Ya, that is what I was saying, but I was also assuming that the number of clips was manageable (say a half dozen at any given time). If you have lots more then that won't work, at least not easily.
However, there is a program I use for my digital photos (still photos) called Cameraid. Free to download and use, but shareware so you get a nag screen each time you start it unless you pay up. I use it to sort new digital photos and I bulk/batch rename all the ones I end up keeping using the date and time stamp in the metadata for file names. E.g. a bunch of photos taken today might rename as follows: 060807-12.43.55.jpg, 060807-14.08.00.jpg, etc. I then sort my photo manually into subject folders so it is pretty easy to determine where to find photos when I need them. For example, Vacations (folder) -> California 2001 (folder) -> files such as 020801-11.15.45.jpg so I know that this photo was taken on our 2001 vacation to California and was taken on February 8th, 2001 at 11:15am and I haven't even had to open and look at the photo yet.
Anyway, to make a long story longer, Cameraid works on most QuickTime compatible files and can do the same thing with movies from my digital still camera and will also rename those based on data and time. So you might download Cameraid and see if that can help by at least giving your files more meaningful names. I haven't tried it with DV formatted files, but tonight I will have to see if it can read the date and time stamp out of those as well.

  • Organizational questions from a new iPhoto user

    Hello,
I recently purchased iPhoto in hopes that it will help me view my photos easily. I have a large (about 3,000) existing photo collection. I keep this collection very organized, and all photos are in a folder hierarchy of the form 'Year->Month->Day'. The name of each photo begins with the date, such as '2007-01-17 Trees.jpg'. My questions about iPhoto in relation to my existing photos are as follows:
    1) If I allow iPhoto to copy my photos, how does iPhoto organize the photos? Do I have any control over this organization or the file naming convention used? Will iPhoto recreate an intelligible directory structure with useful file names, or will all my subsequently imported photos be labeled as "PIC2315..." in a random directory structure?
    2) Can I make it such that iPhoto imports my photos and takes the date from the first characters of the file name, and the picture title from the subsequent portion of the file name?
    3) Not all of the dates in the metadata accurately reflect the date the photo was taken (some are old photos that were scanned in, some taken before digital cameras had extensive metadata), but the dates used at the beginning of the file names are accurate. Can I use iPhoto to update the date stamp on the photos in my library? Otherwise, the 'organize by date' option is not very useful.
    4) Is there any way to move the iPhoto library folder? It looks like, as with iTunes, iPhoto locates its library folder in a conspicuous location, whereas I feel that these files should be relegated to a more discrete location, like the Library folder (in my opinion, the 'pictures' folder should be reserved for images; data files should be stored elsewhere). This is not a big issue, more of an annoyance that Apple imposes its organizational conventions on me without my consent.
Advice on any of these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

    Hi Adrian
    1) If I allow iPhoto to copy my photos, how does iPhoto organize the photos
Here's how the iPhoto Library Folder is organised:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
    To your specific questions:
Do I have any control over this organization
No. The exception is if you take responsibility for the File Management (In the Preferences, Advanced Pane, Uncheck Copy Files to the iPhoto Library Folder...) That way you can leave your files untouched in your file structure. However, if you do this when you delete a file from iPhoto you will need to delete it from the Finder by hand. Not the case if you let iPhoto do the file management.
Will iPhoto recreate an intelligible directory structure with useful file names, or will all my subsequently imported photos be labeled as "PIC2315..." in a random directory structure?
Yes it will, the files will be in rolls that can be named via the iPhoto Window and which names will be reflected in the Finder. The Pictures will be named as per the file name.
I'm guessing that all of this is so that you can easily and quickly find a file if you need it. However, you're missing the point of iPhoto. It's a Photo Organiser. The idea is you import your pics into it, they are stored (in full view) in the Finder and then everything you need to do can be done via the iPhoto Window. Organise them, arrange them into albums (infinitely more flexible than your current folders - a single pic can be in any number of albums or slideshows, can be in Smart Albums, can be easily edited in external editors and exported easily.) Want to find a file? There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    2) Can I make it such that iPhoto imports my photos and takes the date from the first characters of the file name, and the picture title from the subsequent portion of the file name?
No, it will take the date from the EXIF data. However you can edit the date, title etc. from the Info window (the wee 'i' bottom left hand corner.) I think that answers your next question as well.
    4. You can put the iPhoto Library Folder anywhere you like, on an external disk, in another place on your HD, whatever. Apple aren't forcing you to do anything. (You can do the same with iTunes too). However, remember the iPhoto Library Folder contains Data and images.
One thing to remember is the standard warning: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
iPhoto is a very good app, reliable and very flexible. But you do have to work with it. All the work you've done on your folders you can recreate in the iPhoto Window (just drag the folders to the Source Window where they will be imported into Albums). Think of it as a Front End to your photo collection. Up to now you've been using the Finder as a front end, iPhoto is a lot more flexible.
Feel free to ask more if you want further clarification or info.

    TD

  • Security APEX organization question

    Background
    Windows 2003 server
    Oracle 10G
    APEX 2.2 sonn upgrade to 3.0 / 3.1
Midsize organization / very small IT staff
I am not a security guru
We wish to position ourselves to expand and add users we wish to make this task as seemless as possible. We have applications in Apex that are being built using apex_public_user (controlled by oracle table to verify access and conditional displays) / and others using apex_users.
We have a plan to use application specific tables to control conditional displays and processes and use our windows security and groups to contol the ability to get to the application.
We want to take this tact to allow the helpdesk personal to set up security and allow reset of passwords.
My question is does this plan seem sound and has anyone implemented such infrastructure.
What are the pitfalls i need to be aware of?
and if this is a valid approach and is there a step by step approach to implement this.

    Hello,
Take a look at Authorizations in the documentation, they will allow you to precisely control who can see what -

Also, to detect when people tamper with the URL you might want to check out Session State Protection too -

  • Organizational Question: Keyword vs. Description

I am planning to embark on (finally) labeling all my pictures (many thousands) so that I can easily find groupings and specific picutres. I am interested in any advice as to the best method to do this - it looks like the keyword feature may be the best way with keys assigned to both my kids, wife, dog - whoever might be in the picture; but this would not allow specific things like "Kate on bicycle" that descriptions would allow. Sorry if this is a very basic question but any advice would be appreciated!
    -Bob

    Bob:
Keywords are the easiest and most widely used field for categorizing photos. You can use albums to group by event, birthdays, anniversaries, Thanksgiving 07, etc. The keywords can identify individuals within photos and then Comments for more detailed descriptions. When these files are exported out of iPhoto for use by other apps you can have the keywords and comments embedded in the file. Also you can use the title for describing the photos as it doesn't change the file name. The title will also be embedded when the file is exported.
I use the events as containers for an individual shoot. I have the Events folder set to import from the finder in one batch per folder. That way I can upload to a folder, give the folder a title and date and then import it into iPhoto which gives me an Event whose title is the same as the folder.
Just figure out how you would organize photos if they were hard copy and translate that into iPhoto.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photo sync from pc to iPhone to keep folder organization question

I would appreciate some assistance on HOW to sync my photos from my pc to the iPhone while KEEPING them in their nicely organized folders?
When I tried the first time, I had it sync "my photos" folder which contains 79 folders, which include sub folders themselves. What it got was all 3000 photos came across to the iPhone all in 1 folder. No sub folders at all.
I re sync'd and deleted every photo from the iPhone to try again. On my second attempt, after reading all the archived questions and answers here, I tried going into specific photo folders and syncing to the iPhone. I tried doing one by one, but when I checked the iPhone after two folders, it only takes the last one, deleting the first one.
So, with all this said, HOW do you get multiple folders of photos copied to the iPhone?
    thanks,
    Richard

    Thanks strakegl1800, You helped me.
    1. But it copies the pix both in each sub-folder AND duplicates of each pic are in the main folder called Photo Library. How can I get stop the duplicates?
    2. I can not see how to delete a folder or pic off of my phone (unless it is under the "Camera Roll" folder, in which case it shows a garbage can in the bottom right of the screen.)
    3. Also, it is good that the original folder called "Camera Roll" is also still there, but I would like to know where it shows up on my PC.
    Can you help ?

  • PSE 7 Organizer question

From time to time when having both the Editor and Organizer open I notice a red circle with a slash through it in the upper left corner of the thumbnail in the Organizer. exactly what is the significance of this?

It means that the Organizer knows you are editing the photo in some other application (usually the PSE Editor), and the Organizer won't let you do anything with that photo. The red circle goes away when you close the photo in the other application.

  • Aperture 3 library file organization question

I tried searching for an answer to this question but I had no luck.  Perhaps I was searching on the wrong keywords.
In the older version of Aperture, you could look in the "guts" of the library and see individual projects, but as far as I can tell with Aperture 3 you can only see files by date (i.e. by year, month etc).
My problem is that I don't currently have access to the entire library via Aperture, but I have access to all the files via the cloud (I am using Crash Plan).  I need to find individual files but searching chronologically makes no sense and neither does downloading the (terabyte plus) library to use in a local copy of Aperture is not feasible.
Is there a way that I can identify specific projects within the Aperture3Lib file?  Any help would be deeply appreciated.
Attached is a couple of screenshots of what Crashplan shows.

No sorry in Aperture 3 all that got turned into entries in database files. And even if you could find them it would do you no good because the only place an actual image file is located is in the Masters folder, where the files imported are kept and the Previews folder, where the previews are kept.
Also bear in mind that the Masters folder is organized by import date and time not image date and time.
As a  side note you need to be very careful using an online backup service for Aperture (and iPhoto) libraries. Because of the way the # libraries there have been reports of some of the services causing libraries problems when restored.

  • Another library organization question

Is there a way to configure itunes so that it would import files into the library exactly the same way as they are organized in folders on the hard drive (each folder is an album and would not use the id3 tags to organize the songs)?

No, you must put the music into the iTunes library to load it onto an iPod.
You can make iTunes just save the location of your music files rather than copying them into the iTunes Music folder.
Go to Edit>>Preferences>>Advanced>>general and uncheck "Copy to iTunes Music folder when adding to library".
If you also uncheck "Keep iTunes Music folder organised" as well, iTunes will not interfere at all with how you have your files organised.

  • Organization Question (kirby)

    Kirby,
I am trying to get something out the door here after many years of work and while I usually read the manual from start to finish it is going to have to wait. Also I have a thread printed out here in which you do a pretty superhuman effort in explaining organization.
    I am having a problem.
I have moved data around in a manner that I think was copying. I've tried to organize the database and right now everything is in Projects.
Now I have created a folder called "Presentation". This has Albums in it which contains images that I have sorted in various categories for the presentation. I have /copied/ images from other folders to put in these Albums.
Now I have created a Project in this same folder called "FINAL Presentation". I think I am now /copying/ images into this Project from the Albums (which also have copied images).
Sometimes I don't get the ability to REMOVE FROM ALBUM and only the ability to DELETE which is really confusing me. Not to mention making organizing these images difficult. Have I bunched up a Folder > Album with a Folder > Project somehow? Is it not possible to move one to the other in some way and then delete it?
Also, can you please tell me if you know if it is a better idea to put images in a Project or in an Album if I need them downstream in Keynote?
    THANKS!
    Jon

    Hi.
Thank you so much. I am dead in the water here and the clock is ticking.
    OK.
I think I am getting there. I have to add a little and reply to make sure I am getting this.
    1. I notice that everyting is under "iPhoto Library". I am not sure if this matters but I figure I have to mention it. Everything /came/ in from iPhoto but I wonder if I should relocate things to Library > Projects for instance?
    2. Anyway, here is what I have:
    iPhoto Library > Events >
    Folder1
    Folder2
    Folder3
    etc
In each Folder are my /original Projects
    3. So. I have needed to add another layer of organization in order to get a sort that will work for this. I have created a series of "rough" ALBUMS and dragged photos to these ALBUMS. And you are indicating these are just pointers. This makes total sense.
    4. Now, I had thought I would drag the photos to another Album or another Project - but in either case, you are indicating that by dragging images from the "rough" ALBUMS into another ALBUM (say "Final Presentation") or a PROJECT and this is where you see my making an error? Yes?
I see - by deleting any of the images in the "rough" ALBUM (or I guess by even moving images from this ALBUM to another PROJECT which is what I tried to do originally) I have taken away the pointer that got copied to the new - even though I still saw the images in the "rough" ALBUM?
More importantly, how do I get out of this at this point? I mean, I have spent days getting a rough sort of the images in the "rough" Albums - - - and I have organized them in here in a manner that is /ordered/ for presentation. Now I need to get only /some/ from each of these into somewhere where I can then organize THAT information and export to Keynote.
[I mean, I can see my organizing the images in Keynote but I am going to take screenshots of the current organization so I don't have to re-invent the wheel.]
Anyway, I guess the idea here is to SORT ALL THE IMAGES directly in the "rough" Albums and then EXPORT THESE to Keynote?
If so, is there a convenient way that you can think of to save the images (pointers?) or the organization in the "Final Presentation" Album? I spent a good deal of time in there but I suppose I could just use it as a reference and go back and do the same edit in the original "rough" ALBUMS...?
    Eagerly await your reply....
    Thanks.
    Jon

  • Capture time and folder organization question

    hi there,
i just imported a a ton of photos to lightroom this past weekend.  a number of photos are dated incorrectly.  i changed the dates with "edit capture time."  now, i want the files to be resorted into appropriate dated folders.  does lightroom do this or do i have to manually move the images from a folder labeled with the old date to a folder labeled with the new date?
also, when i organize by capture time, the photos in library are still not in chronological order by capture time.  i am using lightroom 2 on mac.
    thanks!

There'll be one top folder, but LR wants to organize by date as you import, which is just right for most, and I am not suggesting eschewing this. Just on a mass of older images, etc., I personally wouldn't bother sorting them by date/folder unless you have a compelling reason, such as one's boss saying "that's how WE do it here...."
I am a bit of a renegade, perhaps, in that I never use camera generated names/numbers*, and usually name the images after I've culled and edited, and (shudder) change the name of the folder from date to event or location. There are brilliant folk who'll say this is wrong, but it works for me. Nicely!
    * If you're backing up at the same time as Import, you're pretty much stuck with the camera numbers, afaik.

  • Installing new SSD into older MacBook Pro and Organization Questions!!?

    Hello,
I am about to pull the trigger on a new Samsung 840 Pro 512gb ssd for my older Macbook Pro 5,3 with 2.66 Intel Core 2 Duo.
I need some advice or at least point me in the direction of where I can read up to date info on properly executing the install of my new ssd.
    A little background:
I have a Seagate 500gb external hdd that has many older pictures/videos on it as well as my "just about full" 320gb hdd on this computer that will be getting the 512ssd.
Any comments/suggestions a to how I can organize all of this and have it in one accessable place? (I was planning on installing the 512ssd on this computer, putting everything on the 512ssd and then wiping the external drive and using it as a backup periodically in case something went wrong with the new ssd I would be installing on this computer.  Follow me? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
I've been telling my wife that we NEED to replace this drive before we lose many of our important pictures and other items on it.  We have used 319gb of which 45gb is still available.  I am nervous as this hdd is about 6-7 years old?
The pictures/videos are the most important to us and do not want to lose them.  Thanks, in advance, for your help!

How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed.
When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

  • Elements 12 organizer question

    Hi,
I currently use lightroom 5 and have the library on an external drive.I have just purchased
Elements 12 and would like to know if I can create the organizer on the same external HD
As I would prefer to keep my files externally rather than on my MacBook Pro HD.
    Any help will be welcome.
    Regards Adrian

You need to alter your prefers in PSE Expert Mode so that PSE can overwrite the LR export and return it to the Library:
Edit >> Preferences >> Saving Files
Click the dropdown list and choose Save Over Current File, then click OK.
You normally make the round trip from Lightroom as follows:
    1) Ctrl+E in the Library to export selected image with develop settings (I choose PSD)
    2) Edit in Elements; then Ctrl+S to replace (overwrite) Lightroom export copy
    3) Ctrl+W to close in Elements and update Lightroom thumbnail.

  • Newby DV importing and organization question - general

    Hi,
I've been reading the forums, watched the tutorials, but still want to get some feedback regarding my understanding of the process and also on what I'd like to do before I get started. I have iLife '08, also with iMovie HD 6.0.4. From reading, it seems that the thing to do is to use iMovie HD 6 to edit and iDVD '08 to burn my final projects. (I can upgrade to iLife '09 if needed.)
I'll be editing footage of vacation, research documentation, and live music performances. I plan to add music, narration, etc., to make travel guides and documentaries. Currently, I have about twelve hours of Mini-DV that were recorded SP on a Sony Handycam DCR-HC90. Most of the time, I shot each tape from beginning to end without rewinding to check results - so the scenes should mostly be back-to-back, right? (What happens to the small gaps from the rare occasions that I did rewind and watch a recent shot?) Some of the audio is 12-bit, some will be 16-bit, some was recorded using a surround-sound mic; what problems will this cause?
I envision making a "video library" of all of my footage so that I can pull scenes into coherent projects. Recording the tapes front-to-back means that the order of scenes relevant to vacation/work/play/locations will be mixed. I would like to import directly to an external drive (LaCie 1T Quad drive - or would another be better?); iLink from camera to computer, Firewire 800 from computer to external drive. (Program on the internal, data on the external, right? Again, I would like to be able to access all of my video footage and pull scenes or parts of scenes into smaller projects.) As I understand it, the scenes will be separated and made into "clips" or Events automatically. Can I make a Folder of these clips and pull individual clips into various new projects? Before I started, the program asked me to name a new project; so, will I have to load all of my tapes into one massive project (e.g., called "film bank" or "video library") which might take a long time to open and be available for editing into new projects? Should I perhaps import each tape into its own project (a smaller library), then open one-at-a-time to pull what I'd like into a current new project?
I'm certain that I'll learn a lot once I get "hands-on" and maybe I just need to start playing. But, if I can pick up some suggestions for organization and saving time (and keeping this process fun!) before I start, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks much for any input!

.. if I want to upload my video to an external hard drive only once, where is the best place for it? In iM09, or iDive, or somewhere else?
    none.
iMHD6 is, as said, 'project centric' - it has to import all needed clips into its project-file; it does NOT allow 'links' as better tools as FinalCutExpress do use (= the clip in the project is just a link o its real, physical location...).
iM09 has by concept a Library, but those 'interlace/skip field problem'; the workarounds known-so-far, as described on my site, or the commercially sold advice to manipulate the moov-atoms (no, no cow-thingie, some.. engineer voodoo) of each mov are - imho - not 'Mac like'; to 'manually' add inbetween-steps is not my understanding of a consumer tool.
your options are, in my belief:
    a) forget the idea of a 'clip pool' and use iMHD6; iMHD6 has a very unknown and never used 'print' feature, to create a fast and simple overview of project's content=clips .. paper&pencil are sometimes better than any software..
    b) use the major advantage of a Lib and live with the quality iM09 allows (= test yourself.. in many cases it is less drama as some complain .. )
    c) purchase $$$ and teach yourself FCE - it allows Library AND perfect handling of interlaced material ..
.. Hoffentlich werde ich 2010-2011 in Erlangen/Nürnberg forschen.
    Erlangen? sounds like rocket-science.. kiddin'!
    you're very welcome .. !

  • Outlook 2010 appointment with exchange 2003 - organizer question

    Hi Sir / Madam,
I have a exchange 2003 server and containing confernece room mailbox. The conference room mailbox is
same as a normal user mailbox since exchange 2003 don't has resource booking feature. And I have following
issue need to be fixed and don't know if this possible for my environment.
Each user can create the appointment in the conference room's calendar but when they select conference room
as resource (location), when all other users open that appointment, then will see the organizer name is conference
room, only the creator can see the appointment was created by himself/herself. I found that if the creator leave
the resource as blank, all users can see the correct organize name.
Anyone know how to fix this issue? Thx
    Jeffrey

    Hi Jeffrey,
According to your posting, I noticed that each user can create the appointment or meeting in the conference room’s calendar. If so, please check if the Default Calendar permission of this room Calendar is set to Author or higher permission.
Generally, if the user creates the calendar items directly from a room’s calendar instead of creating meeting request and sending it to this room, the Organizer name would not be shown as the creator.
Therefore, it is not recommended to directly create meeting request in a room’s calendar. Please create meeting requests in the organizer’s calendar and add the room as a resource, then send the meeting request to the room and attendees. Now check whether
    the organizer is shown correctly.
