Stolen macbook (and wiped clean and internet)

Hello,
Sorry If this question has beens asked 100 times. But I had recently had my macbook pro stolen. I had find my mac installed and enabled.
I understand that for Find My Mac to work the mac needs to be connected to the internet.
I know you can wipe clean (command+R) the macbook but this require internet (I had OSX Lion). So if have notified Apple witht the serial number of my mac, for the thief to wipe clean OSX-Lion it will have to connect to the onterent first. Isn't there anyway for Apple to track down where the computer is when the thied first connect my mac to the interent ??
Also, Let's say the thief wipe clean my computer sucessfully. When he will connect to the Appstore, iTune or whatever with "his" apple account. Will Apple be able to know the serial number of the mac? and therefore block or track down my mac?
Thank you!

There is absolutely not requirement for an Apple computer to be connected to the internet to wipe the hard drive and install an OS.  Once the computer is physically in someone else's hands, they can do anything they wish to it - they can install from an external drive, an optical drive, a thumb drive.  They can install OS X, windows, or Linux as they wish, all without any network connection at all.
And as stated, Apple does not track lost or stolen items.  It is not their place to do so.
